There has been a lot of discussion over whether India will be travelling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025. The two countries have not played a bilateral series for more than a decade due to political tensions but the Pakistan cricket team travelled to India in 2023 for the ODI World Cup. However, there has been no official communication from the Indian government or the BCCI when it comes to India’s possible visit to Pakistan for the competition. After India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said that their target is to win the World Test Championship and Champions Trophy next. However, he once again did not specify if India will be travelling to Pakistan in 2025.

Former Pakistan skipper Salman Butt said that he has seen reports suggesting India will come to Pakistan but added that it is ICC’s duty to ensure that all teams play in Pakistan.

“We try sensationalizing everything. There have been a few reports suggesting that Jay Shah has given a positive signal. However, I don’t think he’s given any signals. I wouldn’t have been excited even if there had been a signal from him because it is the ICC’s duty to ensure that all teams visit Pakistan,” Salman Butt said on his YouTube channel.

Butt further said that if India decide to not travel to Pakistan, ICC will have deal with BCCI over the matter and this will be a good place to see if the governing body can deal with the Indian cricket board.

“If they come, then they welcome, if they don’t, the ICC has to deal with it. We will find out if they can just deal with all the other countries or can do the same with India as well. It will show how much authority they have as a regulator and how neutral they can be,” he added.

“Should Be A Fair Contest”: Afghanistan Coach Fumes At ICC After T20 World Cup Semi-final Defeat https://artifex.news/should-be-a-fair-contest-afghanistan-coach-fumes-at-icc-after-t20-world-cup-semi-final-defeat-5979979/ Thu, 27 Jun 2024 06:41:57 +0000 https://artifex.news/should-be-a-fair-contest-afghanistan-coach-fumes-at-icc-after-t20-world-cup-semi-final-defeat-5979979/ Read More ““Should Be A Fair Contest”: Afghanistan Coach Fumes At ICC After T20 World Cup Semi-final Defeat” »

Afghanistan’s heroic run in the T20 World Cup 2024 came to an end at the penultimate hurdle, as the Rashid Khan-led side suffered a lopsided 9-wicket defeat against South Africa in Trinidad. Opting to bat first, Afghanistan could only put 56 runs on the board, their lowest in T20 internationals and also the lowest in the history of T20 World Cups. After Afghanistan’s journey in the competition came to an end on Wednesday, head coach Jonathan Trott fumed at ICC, saying it wasn’t even an “even contest”.

Speaking to media at the press conference after game, Trott said that though he doesn’t want to get himself into any trouble, he does want to highlight the poor nature of the pitch that was prepared for a clash as big as a World Cup semi-final.

“I don’t want to get myself into trouble. But I also don’t want to sound a bit like ‘sour grapes’ but that’s not the pitch that you want to have a semi-final of a World Cup on. Plain and simple. It should be a fair contest. I’m not saying it should be completely flat with no spin and seam movement, you shouldn’t have batters worrying about moving forward and having the ball fly over their head. You should be confident in getting through the line or use their skills. And T20 is all about attacking and scoring runs and taking wickets. Not looking to survive,” said Trott during the press conference.

Trott wanted the pitch to offer something to both his side and South Africa. However, he feels his team was undone by a surface that favoured the opponent team more.

“If the opposition bowled well and gets you into a position after bowling well and through skill, then it’s fine to them. Then it’s about adapting.”

“If we had bowled the way South Africa had, you could have seen a different second half,” he said during the chat with media personnel.

Jonathan Trott on Afghanistan’s Schedule

Trott also spoke about the hectic schedule that the Afghanistan team was exposed to. But, he didn’t point finger at the schedule as the reason behind his team’s embarrassing defeat in the semi-final.

“We only got back to hotel at three o’clock and then we had to leave at eight o’clock — five hours later so we didn’t get much sleep so the guys obviously were very tired and a lot to process really emotionally physically. So all new territory for the guys,” Trott said Having said that, Trott conceded they were outplayed by a strong South African unit.

“But we knew the schedule, so that’s not an excuse as such. When you go in World Cups or tournaments, you can’t have everything your own way, and you’ve got to fight and play against the odds which you’ve done at times and very proud of that. But it’s no, it’s not the reason why we didn’t win today.” “South Africa bowled well, used the conditions, and showed our boys what it’s capable of. But it just didn’t go our way tonight.” The 43-year-old hoped that the semifinal loss serves as a learning for the team that has improved leaps and bounds in the last five years.

“…we’ve obviously got one better than the previous (ODI) World Cup in November and it’s just about taking it step by step and hopefully we learn from today, the batters certainly.

“What it takes to play international cricket and play against a bowling side like South Africa on a pitch that’s perhaps not conducive to high scoring runs and finding ways of winning games…we just couldn’t find a way today.” Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (0) and Ibrahim Zadran (2), who were Afghanistan’s top run-getters in the tournament, both failed, putting pressure on the middle order that hadn’t fired at all in the tournament.

“Nobody else has got runs. We need to find a reason for that,” Trott said.

Despite the defeat to South Africa, Afghanistan can keep their heads high, having made a mark in the tournament and elevating their status as an elite team.

The ICC has granted official List-A status to Major League Cricket matches in the US in only its second season, a move aimed at promoting the game in one of the biggest sports markets. The International Cricket Council’s decision comes a week before MLC commences its second season and less than a week before the Americas host cricket’s showpiece event, the T20 World Cup. The ICC’s move makes MLC as the official T20 league and America’s first world-class domestic tournament.

“Now, every century, half-century, ‘five-for’, run-out, win, loss, and championship will be documented as official career statistics in an internationally recognised format of the game,” said MLC in a statement.

The official status to MLC means it will provide local US players and upcoming stars of the game the opportunity for international recognition, furthering the development of domestic talent in the country.

“The List-A status comes after the MLC’s successful inaugural season and underscores its unwavering dedication to delivering premier cricket in the United States,” the statement added.

MLC CEO, Vijay Srinivasan, had recently announced the expansion of tournament from 19 games in 2023 to 34 by 2025.

“We saw cricket mania sweep across the US last year off the back of our inaugural season of Major League Cricket. Now, we take exciting momentum into the highly anticipated ICC T20 World Cup and season two of the MLC,”said Srinivasan.

“With an unforgettable summer of cricket on our doorstep, we’re ready to capture the hearts of American sports fans with our thrilling, adrenaline-charged game that is the most exciting emerging T20 tournament across the globe,” he added.

Sanctioned by USA Cricket, MLC saw several players from across the world, including New Zealand and Australia among others, take part in the tournament last year.

Six teams — Los Angeles Knight Riders, MI New York, San Francisco Unicorns, Seattle Orcas, Texas Super Kings, and the Washington Freedom — featured in the inaugural edition.

The appointment process for the head coach of India’s men’s cricket team is set to begin in the coming week. Jay Shah, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, confirmed incumbent Rahul Dravid can reapply if he wants his tenure extended.

“We will call for applications in the next few days. Rahul Dravid’s tenure is coming to an end in June. If he wants to reapply, he can,” Shah said during an interaction at the BCCI headquarters.

Dravid, who took over in November 2021, was handed a short-term extension till the T20 World Cup after his two-year contract expired at the end of India’s loss in the final of the ODI World Cup last November. Shah confirmed the new head coach will be offered to take
charge till the ODI World Cup in 2027.

Contrary to the recent trend in international cricket of having separate head coaches for limited overs’ formats and Test cricket, the BCCI is unlikely to opt for a split coaching role.

“We are looking for a long-term coach, for three years,” Shah said. “There is no precedent of different coaches for different formats in Indian cricket. Besides, we have a number of all-format players. Ultimately, it will be the Cricket Advisory Committee’s (CAC’s) call. I have to implement what they decide. If the CAC selects a foreign coach, I can’t interfere.”

Even before the head coach applications are invited, the three-member CAC— headed by former batter Ashok Malhotra and including Jatin Paranjape and Sulakshana Naik— will have to finalise the prolonged appointment of a national selector.

“A few interviews for the selector’s post have already happened. The CAC will meet in a week’s time to finalise the name and we will announce it soon,” Shah said.

The BCCI in January had advertised for a national selector’s post in order to revert to the convention of each of the five zones represented in the selection panel. For more than a year, the north zone has not been represented in the selection panel whereas the west zone has two members in the panel since last July.

As a result, Salil Ankola is set to make way for a new appointee. The Hindu understands that domestic stalwart Mithun Manhas and Nikhil Chopra, the former India offspinner, are main contenders to join the Ajit Agarkar-chaired panel.

Shah stated that the uproar over the Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League, introduced since the 2023 edition, will be discussed with various stakeholders after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in June. “The Impact Player rule was brought in as a test case. On the bright side, it is providing additional playing opportunities to two more Indian players in every match,” Shah said.

“We will consult with the franchise captains, players, franchises and broadcasters and then decide about the future course. It’s not a permanent rule nor am I saying we will move past it.”

Shah is widely believed to be the prime contender to replace Greg Barclay as the International Cricket Council (ICC) chair later this year. Shah shrugged the query aside, “Let there be speculation. Let me be here (in the BCCI). Am I not doing a good job (as BCCI secretary)?” he concluded.

With just about a month to go before the T20 World Cup 2024 begins in the United States of America and the West Indies, a concerning piece of news has emerged from the Caribbean islands, with a report suggesting that a ‘terror threat’ has been received by Cricket West Indies over the upcoming showpiece event. The security threat over the global cricketing event is said to have come from the North of Pakistan, prompting the cricketing body to jump into action and take stricter security measures.

“We work closely with authorities in the host countries and cities and continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified to our event,” Jonny Graves, the CEO of the Cricket West Indies told Cricbuzzon Sunday.

The report further claims that the security threat has arrived from Pro-Islamic State and it states that, “Pro-Islamic State (IS) media sources have launched campaigns inciting violence against sporting events, which included video messages from the Afghanistan-Pakistan branch, ISKhorasan (IS-K) which highlighted assaults in numerous countries and urged supporters to join the battlefield in their countries.”

The CWI CEO, however, has assured all those participating in the even that security is the board’s utmost priority.

“We want to assure all stakeholders that safety and security of everyone at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is our number one priority and we have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place,” Graves said.

The threat has been received through Pro-Islamic State (Daesh) through the media group “Nashir Pakistan”, which is an Islamic State group-affiliated propaganda channel, according to the Daily Express.

The Twenty20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in both West Indies and the US this year, with the first match taking place on June 1, and the final on 29.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday named sprint legend Usain Bolt as the ambassador of the upcoming T20 World Cup to be played in the West Indies and USA from June 1 to 29. Jamaica-born Bolt had created history at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing where he won the 100m, 200m and 4x100m races in world record times. Bolt currently holds world records in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m with times of 9.58 secs, 19.19 secs and 36.84 secs.

Bolt was delighted about his new role as the World Cup comes to his home.

“I am thrilled to be an ambassador for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Coming from the Caribbean where cricket is a part of life, the sport has always held a special place in my heart,” Bolt said in an ICC media release.

Bolt said it will be massive for cricket to find a market in the USA.

“While I will be supporting West Indies at the WC, getting the sport into the US is big for cricket. It’s the biggest sports market in the world.

“The energy that we will bring for the T20 World Cup is a huge opportunity leading towards cricket’s inclusion in the LA Olympics in 2028,” he said.

As an ambassador, Bolt will play a key role in promoting the event, starting with a cameo appearance in next week’s release of the event’s official anthem alongside iconic artists Sean Paul and Kes.

ICC Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Allardice said: “Usain Bolt is a global icon, we are thrilled to have him on board as an Ambassador for the T20 World Cup. His passion for cricket is well known, making him the perfect fit for this role.”

Islamabad:

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) would look into options to respond to the BCCI — Board of Control of Cricket in India — if it officially refuses to send its team to Pakistan to play the ICC Champions Trophy, said a source in the PCB responding to a question about the recent report that neighbors might not travel to the country for the next year’s tournament. “PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has said it already that Pakistan is open to play a bilateral series with India at a neutral venue only if India agrees to participate in the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year,” the PCB source told IANS.

“There is a clear and glaring contrast between the statement of Rohit Sharma and a corresponding BCCI source-based story. It clearly shows that if its about cricket, the players are willing and have no problem in playing each other at home grounds. But its the political leadership of India that always creates nuisance and blocks the way every time.”

They further reminded that Pakistan sent its team to India for the World Cup, highlighting Islamabad’s readiness to face the challenges and work towards revival of Indo-Pak cricket.

Pakistan is gearing up to host its first International cricket event since the 1996 World Cup. The Champions Trophy is an ICC (International Cricket Council) event and India expected refusal to send its team to Pakistan would not be an easy call to make.

However, the time and buildup to the ICC Champions Trophy may be used to discuss a hybrid model in which India-Pakistan matches may be shifted to neutral venues like Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

On Tuesday, sources in the BCCI told IANS that Team India may not travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy next year, and the venue for the event will likely get shifted or a hybrid model used.

They also added that a bilateral series with the neighbours is “unlikely” in the near future.

India and Pakistan last played a bilateral limited-overs series in 2012-13, when Pakistan visited India.

Last year, India refused to send its team to play the Asia Cup in Pakistan and eventually, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) had to adopt a hybrid model for the event which was split with a vast majority of the matches being organised in Sri Lanka.

Virat Kohli reacts after controversial dismissal during IPL 2024 match© BCCI

Virat Kohli ended up in a heated argument with the on-field umpires following his controversial dismissal during the IPL 2024 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday. During the third over of the RCB innings, Kohli ended up mishitting a full-toss from fast bowler Harshit Rana straight back to the bowler. While KKR cricketers celebrated, Kohli quickly went for a review as he was convinced that the ball was above his waist. However, the replays showed that the ball was dipping and third umpire Michael Gough decided that it was a fair delivery because of the dip in height.

Kohli was visibly upset by the decision and the star batter, along with RCB skipper Faf Du Plessis, was involved in a heated discussion with the umpires following the decision. Kohli looked infuriated as he made his way back to the dugout and his expression made it clear that he was not happy at all.

According to Law 41.7.1 of the ICC Playing Conditions, “Any delivery, which passes or would have passed, without pitching, above waist height of the striker standing upright at the popping crease, is to be deemed to be unfair, whether or not it is likely to inflict physical injury on the striker. If the bowler bowls such a delivery the umpire shall immediately call and signal No ball.”

While Kohli was convinced that the ball was above his waist when it made contact with his bat, the replays showed that it was dipping and would have come down below his waist if he was standing at his normal batting position. The decision also went in the bowler’s favour as Kohli was standing outside the batting crease and the replays made it clear that it would have ended up being a fair delivery.

Sri Lanka made a significant gain in the World Test Championship rankings following their resounding 328-run win over Bangladesh in the first Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Monday.
In their first-ever Test match at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Sri Lanka prevailed over the hosts with an all-round performance and took an unassailable 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Their emphatic triumph in Sylhet marked their eighth away Test win over the hosts, which ensured that Sri Lanka’s impeccable record stayed intact and they are yet to taste defeat in the Test format in Bangladesh.

Before this result, Sri Lanka were at the bottom of the WTC standings with 0 points, while Bangladesh were in the number four spot with 12 points after playing two games and with a points percentage of 50.

Following the win, Sri Lanka secured 12 points in three games and a point percentage of 33.33, moved ahead of South Africa (25 per cent) and England (17.50 per cent), and are tied with Bangladesh in the sixth spot.

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have the same number of points (12) and point percentage (33.33).

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The first Test result win saw a number of changes in the table, with the West Indies moving up to the fifth spot with the same point percentage as Sri Lanka and Bangladesh but with a better points tally (16).

Pakistan, with a point percentage of 36.66, moved to the fourth spot with a points tally of 22.

Coming to Day 4 action, Mominul Haque throughout the day showed grit and put up a stern fight against Sri Lanka’s deadly bowling line-up.

His composure with the bat kept the Sri Lankan bowlers at bay and helped Bangladesh get past the first session. But wickets kept tumbling at the other end, which restricted Bangladesh to a score of 182 and inflicted a 328-run defeat in the first Test.
