In the wake of unrest in Nepal, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday (September 9, 2025) released a travel advisory, with helpline numbers, for the Indians living in Nepal.

The MEA asked the Indians in Nepal to defer travel there until the situation has stabilised. “Indian citizens presently in Nepal are advised to shelter in their current places of residence, avoid going out onto the streets and exercise all due caution,” the Ministry said in its advisory.

The Ministry asked them to follow the local safety advisories from the Nepal authorities as well as the Embassy of India in Kathmandu.

“In case of any assistance required, please call the Embassy of India, Kathmandu, on the following helpline numbers: 977 – 980 860 2881; 977 – 981 032 6134,” it said.

Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli on Tuesday (September 9, 2025) resigned as Gen Z-led protests escalated in Kathmandu and other parts of the country for the second consecutive day. Pressure had been mounting on Mr. Oli to step down, after 19 people, mostly young, were killed on Monday (September 8) when police fired rubber bullets and live ammunition at demonstrations launched by Nepal’s youth, who were demanding an end to corruption, nepotism, favouritism, and misgovernance. As many as 400 were reported injured.

India has said it was deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives during the protests in Nepal and expressed the hope that the issues would be resolved through peaceful means.

Air India, IndiGo and Nepal Airlines cancelled their flights from Delhi to Kathmandu on Tuesday (September 9) amid the anti-government protests.

Nearly 700 Indian passengers were left stranded after Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport shut down for flights due to safety concerns following mounting protests across Nepal.

“Four out of the six flights scheduled to bring back passengers from Kathmandu were cancelled after the airport was closed around 1pm on Tuesday. Nearly, 700 air travellers are stranded. We are seized of the matter and in touch with airlines and the Ministry of External Affairs,” a senior government official told The Hindu on condition of anonymity.

IndiGo announced that its flights for the day were cancelled. SpiceJet announced that its flight on September 10th was also being cancelled.

One passenger scheduled to fly back on IndiGo’s 2 p.m. flight said the airline and airport abandoned them at the boarding gate and left them to fend for themselves.

“The airline staff told us to go through immigration after we reached the boarding gate, effectively asking us to leave the airport premises. We found our baggage thrown around near the baggage reclaim area. But leaving the airport would be foolhardy right now,” Preeti Choudhury told The Hindu in a telephonic conversation. Describing the scenes around the airport, she said smoke could be seen billowing from different sides outside the airport, which was surrounded by military trucks. IndiGo and Air India aircraft were seen above the airport and then returning without landing. Several helicopters could be seen landing and taking off at the airport.

Indian government sources said the airport was believed to be a potential target for protesters who feared certain politicians might attempt to flee the country.

Kathmandu:

India on Monday issued helpline numbers for its citizens stranded in Nepal due to floods and landslides during the past few days.

The advisory follows severe flooding and landslides triggered by record rainfall over the weekend, which caused widespread damage across Nepal.

In a post on social media platform X, the Indian Embassy in Nepal expressed concern at the current situation, stating, “There has been widespread damage due to floods and landslides on account of record rainfall over the weekend. Our thoughts are with everyone affected.”

The Embassy acknowledged that it has received reports of Indian citizens being stranded due to the natural disaster and is coordinating with Nepali authorities to ensure the safe evacuation and return of these individuals.

“The Embassy is in touch with some of these groups and arranging for their safe return,” the advisory stated.

To assist stranded citizens, the Embassy issued three helpline numbers for those in need of help.

Meanwhile, the death count from the devastating floods and landslides in Nepal neared 200 by Monday afternoon, with 30 people reported missing and 194 others injured, according to Nepal’s Home Ministry.

Rescue operations have saved over 4,500 people, with security forces continuing efforts to clear blocked highways and reach affected areas.

Government data also revealed that 1,327 houses were destroyed, and 19 major highways across Nepal suffered damage, further complicating rescue and recovery efforts.

Security forces remain mobilised to clear blocked roads and assist in ongoing rescue missions.
