London:

A 34-year-old Indian-origin man has been jailed for four years for a “horrific attack” on a woman in her own home in London after being found guilty of grievous bodily harm.

Parvez Patel was arrested at the scene in the Westminster area of the city after neighbours heard the woman’s screams and called the police. The Metropolitan Police said the attack took place late on the evening of January 29, when Patel booked a sex worker and arrived at her home. He went on to launch an assault, leaving the victim in her 40s with severe injuries including a broken nose, extensive bruising, swelling and cuts.

“The victim suffered a horrific attack in her own home, where she was most vulnerable. Patel inflicted significant injuries and it is thanks to the quick actions of the public, who alerted police, we were able to intervene,” said Detective Constable Lloyd Leech from the Met Police’s Central West Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit.

“Sex workers are among the most vulnerable in society, and we want to ensure they are heard and supported. We encourage anyone who has experienced any form of violence to come forward. You will be listened to, supported, and we will work tirelessly to bring offenders to justice,” he said.

Patel was charged on January 31 and following a recent three-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in London, he was sentenced on Monday.

“I commend the victim for her bravery and courage in reporting this brutal attack and remaining engaged with the police investigation throughout. Her determination to give live evidence during the trial was crucial in securing the custodial sentence, which we welcome,” said Police Constable Preet Brar, the victim’s Specialist Support Officer.

According to the Met Police, Patel was charged with “attempted rape, sexual assault by penetration, making threats to kill, false imprisonment, voyeurism and GBH (grievous bodily harm) with intent” and was convicted of GBH with intent and acquitted of the other charges.

Shimla:

A virtual ‘nikah’ was solemnised in Himachal Pradesh with the groom in Turkiye and the bride in Mandi. The marriage ceremony of Adnan Muhammad, a resident of Bilaspur, had to be performed virtually as the company for which he works in Turkiye refused to grant him leave, his family members said.

Also, the ailing grandfather of the bride insisted that she get married at the earliest, they added.

The family members of the groom and the bride agreed to a virtual ‘nikah’ and the barat from Bilaspur reached Mandi on Sunday. The marriage was held on Monday.

The couple connected through video calling and a qazi performed the rituals with the duo saying “qubool hai” thrice.

Akram Mohammad, the uncle of the girl said the wedding was made possible only due to the advanced technology.

Last year in July, Ashish Singha from Kotgarh in Shimla and Shivani Thakur from Bhuntar in Kullu tied the knot through video-conferencing as the barat could not reach its destination due to landslides and flash floods.

Singapore:

An Indian-origin Singaporean bar owner was sentenced to jail for 13 years and four weeks on Monday and will receive nine strokes of the cane for raping a runaway 17-year-old girl after allowing her to work for him.

Raj Kumar Bala, 42, was convicted of a charge each of raping and molesting the victim and pleaded guilty to a third charge of harbouring a runaway under the Children and Young Persons Act, Channel News Asia reported.

Defence lawyer Ramesh Tiwary said his client has asked to be released on bail pending appeal, according to the channel’s report.

The court heard that the victim was 17 in February 2020 when she ran away from the Singapore Girls’ Home.

She found out about a job opportunity at Bala’s Don Bar and Bistro in Dunlop Street in the Little India precinct of hotels, motels and eateries through another runaway who was working there.

The other runaway was also sexually assaulted by Bala in a charge that stood down for the time being.

The victim went down to the bar to interview for the job and met Bala, who described the job duties to her, including serving customers and making drinks.

He offered her the role, saying she could stay at the bar with other runaways.

The victim worked at the bar for a few days, but police received a tip-off about people who absconded and worked there. They raided the place in the early hours of February 22, 2020.

The victim fled with another girl to escape the raid, before being picked up by Bala.

He drove them to his condominium, telling them they could stay there, before drinking alcohol with the girls.

He raped the victim while she was heavily intoxicated and also engaged in sex acts with the other girl.

The victim left the condo and surrendered herself to the home in July 2020, but told her case worker only in August 2020 that she was raped.

Justice Mavis Chionh noted the “considerable personal harm” inflicted on the victim, who blames herself as to how she came to be in an intoxicated state that led to her rape.

Her testimony in court, which was corroborated by her former boyfriend, illustrated how the trauma from her past would be revived in a way that negatively affects her well-being, the judge noted.

She said Bala knew that the victim was young and on the run from police, and she was dependent on him for income and shelter.

Bala faces other pending charges and is yet to make a decision on what he intends to do with them, according to the report.

The bar owner faces 22 more charges relating to five other victims, mainly for sex offences, according to a report by “The Straits Times”. These charges are pending in court.

He is accused of raping and molesting a victim identified in court documents as B1, raping and sexually assaulting a victim identified as B5 and raping, molesting and threatening another victim identified as B6.

He is also accused of sexually penetrating a minor under the age of 16, identified as B7, and molesting and causing alarm to another victim, identified as B8. PTI GS RC

New Delhi:

An Indian-origin woman was killed, and another was critically injured in a shooting in New Jersey’s Middlesex County in the US. The police identified the suspect as 19-year-old Gaurav Gill, also of Indian origin, who has been taken into custody. 

According to a Times of India report, the woman who died was from Punjab. Responding to a report of gunfire, police arrived at the scene to find two women with severe gunshot wounds on Wednesday (June 14). Both victims were airlifted to a hospital in critical condition. Jasvir Kaur, 29, died of her injuries while her 20-year-old cousin remains in critical condition.

The suspect, Gaurav Gill, was arrested later the same day. After hours on the run, he was cornered by law enforcement in a backyard about half a mile from the shooting site. Gill, a resident of Kent, faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and several weapon-related offences.

The house where the women lived together is owned by Gurmukh Singh, who remembered Kaur as a hard-working and kind individual. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and it is not known if Gill had any prior relationship with the victims.
