Islamabad:

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar took a leisurely morning stroll within the Indian High Commission campus in Islamabad, Pakistan, on Tuesday. He was on an official visit to Pakistan to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation conclave.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Jaishankar stated, “A morning walk together with colleagues of Team @IndiainPakistan in our High Commission campus.”

He also planted a sapling at the premises of the Indian High Commission. He was accompanied by officials of the Indian High Commission.

Mr. Jaishankar met with Mongolian Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Islamabad, Pakistan. The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between India and Mongolia, with Jaishankar expressing his delight in exploring opportunities for deeper cooperation.

This meeting marks a significant moment in India-Mongolia ties, building on the strategic partnership established during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mongolia in 2015.

He also attended a dinner reception hosted by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where they exchanged warm gestures, shaking hands and sharing pleasantries

Mr. Jaishankar received a warm welcome upon his arrival at Rawalpindi airport, courtesy of Ilyas Mehmood Nizami, Director General (South Asia) of Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at Nur Khan Airbase. The occasion was made even more special by children dressed in vibrant traditional attire, who presented him with beautiful flower bouquets, setting a gracious tone for his visit.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that the meeting focused on the trade and economic agenda of the organisation. Mr Jaishankar led the Indian delegation at the 23rd Meeting of the SCO.

Burnt Awami League party office as anti-government protestors set fire in Dhaka

New Delhi:

Non-essential staff and their families at the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka are returning to India via commercial flights, sources said today. They are returning voluntarily, sources said.

All diplomats including the High Commissioner have stayed back and are working from the mission, sources said.

After resigning, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina came to India on Monday, and President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved parliament a day later. He appointed Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus as the head of an interim government.

The decision was made in a meeting that Mr Shahabuddin had with chiefs of the three services and a 13-member delegation of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at Bangabhaban (the presidential palace).

The other members of the interim government will be finalised after talks with political parties.

The last time any Indian mission abroad had to leave for safety was in August 2021 after US troops pulled out from Afghanistan. Two Indian Air Force C-17 transport aircraft flew into Kabul on August 15 to evacuate Indian embassy personnel, including Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel who defend the mission.

Over 120 people including Ambassador Rudrendra Tandon had boarded one of the two C-17s and safely landed in Gujarat’s Jamnagar.

“India has signed an additional grant of Sri Lanka Rupees (SLR) 150 million to build houses and infrastructure facilities in the Buddhist sacred town of Anuradhapura,” the Indian High Commission has said.

Santosh Jha, the High Commissioner of India, and the relevant Sri Lankan officials on March 21 exchanged letters about the grant to the island nation.

With this, the Indian government’s total commitment to the project currently stands at SLR 450 million for the construction of houses and infrastructure facilities in Sobitha Thero village of Anuradhapura.

The late Sobhitha Thero was an iconic Buddhist monk in the island nation’s good governance movement.

“Responding to the drastic changes in the economic landscape of Sri Lanka, the Government of India decided to infuse additional funds into nine ongoing grant projects to expeditiously complete these projects, while also minimising the impact of the sharp rise in the cost of construction materials on the original scope of projects. The extent of additional funds is up to 50% of the original commitment by GOI in each of the nine projects,” the Indian High Commission said.

“Two Indian Coast Guard ships arrived at the port of Galle in Sri Lanka for a formal visit to facilitate professional exchanges and conduct joint training exercises,” the Indian mission in Colombo said.

“The Indian Coast Guard ship Samarth, an Offshore Patrol Vessel, and Abhinav, a Fast Patrol Vessel, arrived at the southern port on February 27,” the Indian High Commission said. The ships will visit Colombo from March 2 to 5 before departing the island nation.

“@IndiaCoastGuard Ship Samarth and Abhinav enter #Galle harbour today on a goodwill visit to #SriLanka. Visit of #ICG ships will facilitate professional exchanges & joint exercises with the Sri Lanka Coast Guard, i.a.w ICG-SLCG MoU,” the Indian Coast Guard said in a post on X.

The Commanding Officers of the Indian Coast Guard ships, Deputy Inspector General P. Pradeep Kumar and Commandant (JG) Prabhat Kumar, will call on the Director General of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard and other senior officers during their visit.

“During the stay, the ships will undertake training for Sri Lanka Coast Guard on VBSS (Visit, board, search, and seizure), Fire Fighting and Damage Control, Maritime Pollution Response and hold few other professional interactions,” the press release said.

“Further, activities such as yoga, beach cleaning and walkathon will also be held during the visit. In addition, Passage Exercise (PASSEX) will be conducted with Sri Lanka Coast Guard ship, on departure, off Galle and Colombo,” it said.

The ships will also be open for visits by school children to further the people-to-people connection and awareness about the Indian Coast Guard and its capability.

In the past few months, Indian Naval ships and submarines Kora, Kabra and Karanj visited Colombo.

“Visits by Indian Navy and Coast Guard vessels to Sri Lanka aim to enhance camaraderie and interoperability between the two friendly neighbouring Navies, which is in keeping with India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) doctrine and ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy,” the High Commission said.
