India spinner Varun Chakravarthy says his T20 World Cup preparation is centred around backing his lengths, maintaining confidence and constantly challenging himself mentally even in matches that appear straightforward.

The 34-year-old has 51 wickets from 32 T20Is, including six wickets in the first three games of the ongoing five-match series against South Africa.

Chakravarthy is vital for India’s title defence at the World Cup, which is scheduled to be held from February 7 to March 8 in India and Sri Lanka.

“It is very important to keep putting pressure on yourself to get ready for the World Cup,” the Karnataka-born spinner said on ‘Follow The Blues’ on Jiohotstar. “You have to challenge yourself even when there is no challenge. If a match feels easy, you have to create that pressure mentally and start challenging yourself.

“Confidence, bowling the right lengths, and understanding the opposition are key. That is one major factor I want to take into the World Cup. With a better understanding of the opposition, I think I can do well,” he said.

Chakravarthy said sticking to the basics and trusting his skill-set have been the key to his recent success at the international level. “My plan is simple, stick to the basics and bowl my length. Sometimes it works, and thankfully in the last three matches, it has worked well. I will try the same in the next match,” he said.

India and South Africa are set to face off in the fifth and final T20I here on Friday (December 19, 2025).

“When you are not confident, your mindset affects your skill. The key is to stay confident and back your skills. That is when you execute well, without much change. That is the secret to being consistent,” he said.

“At this level, you must be consistent, playing at the highest level is important to know where you stand,” Chakravarthy said. “In my first match at the international level, I struggled a bit initially and that’s when I understood a few things. I went back to practice and made corrections. So, it is very important to keep playing at the highest level.”

It is that time of the year when cricketers across the world are glued to the screens, waiting with bated breath to know whether they have hit the jackpot.

Amid all the attention on the IPL mini-auction in Abu Dhabi, there are far more pressing matters at hand for India and South Africa.

The Men in Blue, leading 2-1, will look to seal their eighth consecutive T20I series victory when they take on the Proteas in the fourth T20I at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday (December 17, 2025).

Suryakumar Yadav’s men bounced back strongly in the previous outing in Dharamshala with a comprehensive seven-wicket win to edge ahead in the five-match contest.

At the same time, the first three matches have shown that one can’t read too much into the form guide in the fickle world of T20 cricket, where one fine spell of bowling or a cameo batting effort can flip the outcome quickly.

India and South Africa alternated between posting competitive totals and defending them easily in Cuttack and New Chandigarh.

For the hosts, there were quite a few positives to take home from the Dharamshala victory. The bowlers, who were sent on a leather hunt in the second encounter, found their bearings, especially Arshdeep Singh, to restrict the visitors to a paltry total.

Harshit Rana, who replaced Jasprit Bumrah, hit the ground running, giving early breakthroughs while Varun Chakaravarthy continued to bamboozle batters. Bumrah, who missed the previous game due to personal reasons, is likely to be available for this game.

Shivam Dube’s tight spell would have warmed the hearts of the management. If the all-rounder can chip in a few overs consistently, it will give the squad more depth and flexibility ahead of the T20 World Cup.

But concern persists over Suryakumar and Shubman Gill’s meagre returns. The skipper hasn’t scored a half-century in his last 21 visits to the crease, while that number is 18 for Gill.

The vice-captain, who made a comeback into the T20 set-up ahead of the Asia Cup, needs to strike form sooner rather than later, with Sanju Samson waiting in the wings. The Kerala wicketkeeper-batter, who had three centuries as an opener last year, was shunted down the order to accommodate Gill and has been forced onto the sidelines despite reasonable performances in the middle-order as well.

Meanwhile, Aiden Markram’s men also have quite a few headaches to solve with their batting unit. In both defeats, the team lost half its line-up with the score reading 50 and 44.

If not for Markram’s fighting half-century in Dharamshala, South Africa might have been bundled out for less than 100 for the second time in the series.

Considering the pitch in Lucknow at the Ekana Stadium could be two-paced, the South African middle-order needs to find a way to tackle the Indian spinners if it hopes to push the series into a decider.

The teams (from): India: Suryakumar Yadav (Capt.), Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Shahbaz Ahmed, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Varun Chakaravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana and Washington Sundar.

South Africa: Aiden Markram (Capt.), Ottneil Baartman, Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Quinton de Kock (wk), Donovan Ferreira (wk), Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, George Linde, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje and Tristan Stubbs.

Match starts at 7 p.m.

India turned up the heat on a chilly Dharamshala night to flatten South Africa by seven wickets in the third T20I in Dharamsala on Sunday (December 14, 2025). The win, set up by an exceptional bowling performance, gave India a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

The home team sat in the driver’s seat from start to finish in a dominant show.

After electing to field, India was ruthless with the ball, bundling South Africa out for 117. The one-sided chase, which started with Abhishek Sharma lofting Lungi Ngidi for a massive six, was done and dusted in 15.5 overs.

A sizzling Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana put South Africa in a hole in the PowerPlay. Arshdeep got the new ball to move sharply away, and when he brought the odd one back in, he had Reeza Hendricks plumb in front.

Arshdeep (two for 13) honed in on the perfect line and length, in stark contrast to the endless wides he delivered in the previous match.

Harshit, drafted into the XI because Jasprit Bumrah returned home for personal reasons, took out form batter Quinton de Kock with a skiddy delivery.

Real struggle

The visitor was put in a chokehold, crawling to 25 for three in six overs. There was no respite when Hardik Pandya came on to bowl, as the all-rounder induced the nick from Tristan Stubbs to record his 100th T20I scalp.

Wickets continued to tumble, with seamer Shivam Dube and spinner Varun Chakaravarthy grabbing a share of the spoils.

Only captain Aiden Markram (61, 46b, 6×4, 2×6) put up some resistance. His patience paid off when he smacked Harshit for two sixes and a four in the 18th over — a rare bright spot for South Africa. Markram would later add another highlight when he ran back a great distance to pull off a fine catch to dismiss Abhishek.

Wrapping it up

Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who got his chance as Axar Patel fell ill, claimed two wickets in the final over to wrap up the innings.

Despite India dropping no less than four catches, South Africa was kept down to the lowest men’s T20I team total at this venue.

The big crowd at the HPCA Stadium enjoyed every bit of India’s response. Abhishek (35, 18b, 3×4, 3×6) and Shubman Gill (28, 28b, 5×4) powered the side to 68 for one at the end of the Powerplay, leaving the Proteas with nowhere to hide.

With the result a foregone conclusion, Gill used the chance to find a bit of form.

Skipper Suryakumar Yadav (12, 11b, 2×4), another batter in desperate need of runs, was not at his best in this brief stint.

Tilak Varma, the standout batter in the second T20I, continued his good run with an unbeaten 26.

Endemic dengue may have helped stem severity of early COVID wave in India: study

Can the dengue virus beat the coronavirus and is it why the early wave of the pandemic in 2020 resulted in fewer COVID deaths or severe infections compared to Europe or North America where dengue is not endemic? Research from the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata hints at these intriguing possibilities following an analysis of antibodies from people infected with dengue and testing them against a kind of coronavirus called murine hepatitis virus (mouse coronavirus). In research settings, this virus — being part of the same family of human coronaviruses — is considered a good surrogate to study the behaviour of the coronavirus strains that infected people during the pandemic..
