India vs New Zealand LIVE, 2nd Test, Day 3: A crucial day for India! Whether the Rohit Sharma-led side becomes the first Indian cricket team since 2012 to lose a Test series at home may very well be decided today. With a 300-plus lead in the second Test with two days left, it is New Zealand’s match to lose from here on. At stumps on Day 2, New Zealand were five down with a lead of 301. For India to have any chance of saving the match, the first target would be to dismiss New Zealand for as low score as possible before thinking about other possibilities. (LIVE SCORECARD)

Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal became the youngest Indian to score 1000 Test runs in a single calendar year during the Day 2 of the second Test against New Zealand at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Friday. The 22-year-old batter surpassed the previous record held by Dilip Vengsarkar, who reached the 1000-run mark at age 23 in 1979. Currently, Jaiswal is second in the list of highest Test run-scorers in 2024, behind England’s Joe Root, who has amassed 1305 runs in 14 matches. Jaiswal’s form this year has seen him accumulate 1007 runs in just 10 matches, averaging 59.23 with two centuries and six half-centuries.

With three more Tests remaining in 2024, he has a chance to surpass some of the biggest records held by Indian legends.

Most notably, Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for most Test runs by an Indian in a calendar year, with 1562 runs scored across 14 matches in 2010. Virender Sehwag’s 1462 runs in 2008 remain the highest by an Indian opener in a single year.

India vs New Zealand LIVE, 2nd Test, Day 2: After the bowlers, particularly Washington Sundar, weaved their magic, onus will be on the Indian batters to boost the side’s chances against New Zealand in the second Test in Pune on Friday. At stumps on Day 1, India reached 16/1 in reply to New Zealand’s 259 in the first innings. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and No. 3 Shubman Gill were at the crease. If India can take a sizeable lead, it will give the spin troika of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar enough ammunition to go after the Kiwis. New Zealand, on the other hand, would hope their tweakers restrict India to as low a total as possible. (LIVE SCORECARD)

India vs New Zealand, Second Test Day 1 Live Updates: New Zealand skipper Tom Latham won the toss and opted to bat against India in the second Test in Pune. Trailing 0-1 in the series, India have included Shubman Gill, Akash Deep, and Washington Sundar in their Playing Xi, replacing KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav. On the other hand, New Zealand have named Mitchell Santner in their Playing XI as pacer Matt Henry has been benched due to a niggle. Revenge will be in the minds of the Indian players as they suffered an 8-wicket loss in the first game. This included an embarrassing 46 all out that came in the first innings. (Live Scorecard)

IND vs NZ, 2nd Test Day 1 Live: Pitch report

The colour of the pitch remains the same – black soil in both Bangalore and Pune. On a good length area, it’s a lot more dry and a lot more devoid of grass. The team winning the toss should bat first, and there will be enough assistance for spinners from ball one.

IND vs NZ, 2nd Test Day 1 Live: Sarfaraz warming up

As per the current visuals, batter Sarfaraz Khan can be seen warming up in the ground. In the first Test, he came as a replacement of Shubman Gill and hammered 150 runs. However, as Gill is now fit to return, there were questions regarding his spot in the second Test. The official confirmation is still not out and we have to wait to see the final Playing XI.

IND vs NZ, 2nd Test Day 1 Live: Rohit-Virat need to fire

One could say a big score for each of the two seniors, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, is around the corner. The latter, especially, would be keen to draw from his 254 not out here in 2019-20, which paved the way for an innings and 137-run thrashing of South Africa. By his own lofty standards, Yashasvi Jaiswal endured twin failures in the Bengaluru Test and the young batter looked to iron out his flaws when he had multiple stints in the nets.

IND vs NZ, 2nd Test Day 1 Live: Visitors in lead

After being shot out for an embarrassing 46 in the first innings at Bengaluru, India’s resolute show in the second innings could not prevent an eight-wicket pounding which saw the top-ranked team in the World Test Championship table dropping points even though it continues to hold the top spot. Winning the next two Tests will be first priority for Rohit Sharma and his men before they hit the Australian shores for a five-Test affair next month.

After losing the first Test to New Zealand by eight wickets in Bengaluru, Rohit Sharma-led India made a change in their squad. They added Washington Sundar in the team for the remaining two Tests against the Blackcaps. The player, who bowls right-arm off-spin and bats left-handed, was not there even in the reserves of the squad that was announced earlier for the ongoing Test series. While the new entry surprised many, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has tried to understand the reason behind the new entry.

“Washington Sundar’s name has come in the team. It was slightly on unexpected lines, although he scored a century just now. He was playing for Tamil Nadu and beat up Delhi. Sai Sudharsan also beat up Delhi. He scored a double hundred and Sundar scored a century,” said Chopra on his YouTube channel.

Noably, R Ashwin was brought in to bowl too late on the final innings of the Bengaluru Test match. He bowled only two overs in the fourth innings that too when the game was almost over. Connecting it with Sundar’s inclusion, Chopra questioned if Ashwin was completely fit or not.

“He (Sundar) has been given a place in the team. The question that comes to mind is – what is the Indian team thinking? Do they want to play another spinner? There were already plenty of fast bowlers in the traveling reserves. Is Ashwin not fully fit?” he said.

“Was it because of that he was given only two overs on the last day? He was bowled when the match was over. It just did not make sense that you don’t bowl Ashwin at all. What is the logic behind that? Since you didn’t bowl him, is he carrying some niggle and you want Washington Sundar as an almost like-for-like in terms of type of skill?” he added.
