For Rohit Sharma, the India vs England Test series has been a big learning curve. Missing top stars due to injury and other reasons, Rohit Sharma marshalled a group of debutants to defeat a strong England side. He had by his side experienced campaigners like R Ashwin too, who had a special series. The veteran off-spinner was the top wicket-taker in the series with 26 scalps in 10 innings. He had to deal with tough times on the personal front as his mother suffered a health emergency.

Despite that, R Ashwin stood tall. Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday spoke about R Ashwin, who played his 100th Test and took his 500th wicket in the format, during the course of the series.

“His career speaks for itself. Look at the number of Man of the Match, Man of the Series he has got. Whenever he plays in India, or outside the amount pressure he has to take. In one innings if he does not take wickets, people start talking, ‘this is happening. That is happening.’ Arey Bhai Insaan hai, he is also trying his best. Imagine for him to come out on top every time, series after series, says a lot what kind of bowler he is,” Rohit Sharma said in an Instagram video.

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Ashwin revealed what followed after he received the news of the hospitalisation and how skipper Rohit Sharma’s gesture left him ‘gobsmacked’. He even went on to call Rohit an “outstanding leader” for how he handled the situation.

“I asked how she was and if she was conscious. The doctor apparently told me that she was not in a position to be seen. I started tearing up. I was searching for a flight but I couldn’t get one. The Rajkot airport closes down at 6 as there are no flights from there after 6. I didn’t know what to do. Rohit (Sharma) and Rahul (Dravid) Bhai came to my room and Rohit literally asked me to stop thinking and leave to be there with my family. And he was trying to arrange a charter flight for me,” Ashwin said.

“Kamlesh, the team physio, is a very good friend of mine. Rohit told him to fly with me to Chennai and be with me but I convinced him to stay back. When I went down, the security and Kamlesh were already there, waiting. Kamlesh got a call from Rohit on our ride towards the airport, checking up on me and literally asking him to be with me during this tough time. It was 9:30 at night. I was just gobsmacked. I cannot even think about it. The two people there are the only ones that I could talk. What if nobody was there? I just thought, even if I were a captain, I’d tell my players to go back home. No second thoughts about it. But will I be calling people to check up on him? I don’t know. Unbelievable. I saw an outstanding leader in Rohit Sharma that day,” the veteran spinner added.

India captain Rohit Sharma hailed the performance of the debutants in the recently concluded Test series vs England and called the series one of the toughest of his Test career. Speaking exclusively about the hard-fought series on Team Ro on Instagram, Rohit said, “A five Test match series is always tough, always hard, a lot of challenges through that one and a half to two months that we need to go through. It was a very different experience to play that five Test series and against an opposition like England, we knew it was never going to be easy. We have to be at our best and certainly towards the end, I could say that we are at our best to come out on top on four occasions. So very, very pleased with how we played that series.”

The series also challenged Rohit the captain and he enjoyed finding solutions to the various challenges he faced. “As a captain, the series made me think about a lot of stuff as to what we need to do, how we can stop these guys, how we can put pressure on them. There were a lot of talks behind the scenes. Luckily, I have got a superb support staff around me who are there to help and guide me,” he added.

Rohit highlighted the display of the youngsters as a major positive from the series and was impressed by their approach. “I really enjoyed playing with the youngsters. All of them are very mischievous. I knew most of them well and what their strengths are and how to they want to play the game. It was just me talking to them about how good they are and the good things they have done in the past. The way they responded to me and Rahul bhai (coach Rahul Dravid) was superb.”

India lost the opening Test but Rohit was always confident of bouncing back. “Having lost the first match it is not easy. Lot of thinking goes in whether you have the right combination. So many questions will creep in.  It was important to stay calm and just let it flow. It was important to send the message to the group that we don’t need to panic and there are still four more Test matches to go,” he said.

He also opened up on his conversations that were caught on stump-mic. He also touched on his infamous ‘koi garden mein ghumega to…” which had some abusive words.

“Enjoyed handling thses guys. They enjoyed it as well. Kabhi kabhi bol deta hun jo mike mein pakda jata hai. But that’s me. That’s how I am. Not to hurt anyone but to ensure they remember they have a job. I was very pleased to see everyone engaged which was absolutely brillaint. That is this whole thing is all about where I am telling them koi yaha garden mein ghoomega nahi. End of the day try and make sure to get the job done,” he said.

India leads the WTC table and is also ranked as the No.1 Test Team in the ICC rankings.

India broke many records in the recently-concluded five-match Test series against England at home. The Rohit Sharma-led side put up a dominating show and clinched the series with 4-1 scoreline. The win became more special as the hosts side consisted of many youngsters, who gave exemplary performances and became household names. One such player was batter Sarfaraz Khan, who made his debut in the third Test and completed the series with 200 runs in his tally. He also smashed three half-centuries and played fearless cricket against England.

Recently, Sarfaraz opened up about playing under the captaincy of Rohit. The 26-year-old batter jokingly compared Rohit’s style of captaincy to a scene from famous Bollywood movie, “Lagaan”.

“Rohit bhai ke sath khel ke bhi mujhe bahut maza aaya. Main bahut time se cricket khel raha tha, 9-10 saal maine IPL bhi khela. Aur domestic bhi khel raha hoon. Mujhe bahut maza aaya Rohit bahi ke sath khel ke. Aisa laga ki… matlab jab unko dekhta hoon toh ekdum pyaar sa aata hai ki itne ache bande hai vo. Sabko saath mein lekar chalte hai. Jab vo team mein bolte hai kuch, apne vo movie dekhi hogi Lagaan. Aamir Khan kaise team banata hai. Toh unko dekh ke mujhe Lagaan movie ka he yaad aata hai. (I enjoyed a lot while playing under the captaincy of Rohit Bhai. I have been playing for a long time now. I played in the IPL for 9-10 years and also played domestic cricket. So, it was a wonderful experience of playing under Rohit Bhai. Whenever I see him, I just admire his greatness. They takes everyone together as a team. Whenever he speaks something during the team meeting, it reminds me of Aamir Khan’s movie, Lagaan.),” Sarfaraz told AajTak.

“Daant-te itna nahi hai, bass samjhate hai. Har ek ke bolne ka tarike alag hota hai. Mujhe to nahi lagta ki daant-te hai kyuki Mumbai ki language thodi aisi he rehti hai. Tu kar ke baat karte hai pr iska matlab ye nahi ki vo daant-te hai. Ye hum Mumbai walo ki style hai. Hum waise he baat karte hai. Acha team ko saath mein lekar chalte hai. Bonding achi hai. Sikhate hai. Junior senior jaisa feel nahi aaya mujhe mere debut ke time pe. (He doesn’t scold us much. he only makes up understand and everyone has a different way of talking. I never felt that he ever scolded us. It’s just the way of talking in Mumbai. We talk like that only. His bonding with the team players is very good. He never makes us feel that he is senior to us.),” he added.

Sarfaraz was handed the Test cap by former India captain Anil Kumble before the third Test in Rajkot, where he scored two half-tons to emulate the legendary Sunil Gavaskar.

“From my childhood, I have been hearing stories about the importance of Test cricket. My father kept telling me the importance of the longest format of the game. It’s not like there was no pressure, I felt pressure when I was playing my maiden series,” Sarfaraz said.

“My Instagram followers have grown to 1.5 million after my Test debut. For the last four years, it was 600-700k followers on Instagram. Suddenly, after playing for India, it has become 1.5 million. It’s good,” he added.

Sarfaraz Khan said on Friday that his father, Naushad, urged him to play domestic matches as if he was playing for the country even when his selection to the Indian team was getting delayed despite scoring tall runs in the national circuit. Sarfaraz finally got the opportunity to play for India during the recently-concluded five-match Test series against England where he showcased his prowess by scoring three half-centuries. Despite an amazing First-Class record of scoring 3,912 runs at an average of 69.85 with 14 centuries, the Mumbai cricketer wasn’t getting a break in the India team. Even the legendary Sunil Gavaskar backed his Test selection last year after seeing him score copious amount of runs in domestic cricket.

“I would ask my father when would I get a chance to play for India and if there were people supporting us. He would tell me just one thing, ‘think as if you’re playing for India in your next domestic match and score runs there as well’.

“So I only had one job, that was to score runs whereever I’m playing,” Sarfaraz said during the India Today conclave here.

Sarfaraz was handed the Test cap by former India captain Anil Kumble before the third Test in Rajkot, where he scored two half-tons to emulate Gavaskar.

“From my childhood, I have been hearing stories about the importance of Test cricket. My father kept telling me the importance of the longest format of the game. It’s not like there was no pressure, I felt pressure when I was playing my maiden series,” Sarfaraz said.

Sarfaraz thanked Gavaskar for taking up his cause. Gavaskar, reacting to the cricketer not getting a Test berth in January last year, had said the selectors should not choose players based on their shape or physique, but rather on their form with the bat or ball.

“I want to say thank you to Gavaskar sir, who has helped and supported me.” Sarfaraz said playing for India had seen his social media following rise exponentially.

“My Instagram followers have grown to 1.5 million after my Test debut. For the last four years, it was 600-700k followers on Instagram. Suddenly, after playing for India, it has become 1.5 million. It’s good,” Sarfaraz said.

Indian cricket team batter Cheteshwar Pujara was considered for the last three Test matches against England in the recently concluded series but chief selector Ajit Agarkar decided to go with youngster Devdutt Padikkal, according to a report. Padikkal was included in the India squad after KL Rahul was ruled out due to injury ahead of the third Test match in Rajkot. The report claimed that Pujara was considered because of his impressive domestic record but Agarkar believed that Padikkal’s height will be an added advantage against the England bowlers and he was also going well in Ranji Trophy.

“It was Agarkar who suggested Jurel’s name. The team management wasn’t too confident about him as he was still a rookie. Picking a youngster who hasn’t had much red-ball exposure at the top level straightaway into the Indian side for an important series like England was always going to be a brave call but Agarkar had seen enough to vouch for the youngster,” a BCCI source told Hindustan Times.

“There was a discussion about Cheteshwar Pujara, who was scoring runs in Ranji Trophy. The batting line-up literally had no experience. But Agarkar stood firm on looking ahead with Padikkal’s selection. He was present when he hit a fluent 150 in a Ranji Trophy and he believed that his height would come in handy against the inexperienced England spinners,” the source added.

Padikkal finally made his debut for India in the final Test in Dharamsala and the left-hander looked in control against the England bowlers as he scored a gritty 65 in the first innings.

The recently concluded Test series between India and England was a tough test for the Bazball style of cricket made famous by the Ben Stokes-led side under coach Brendon McCullum. The visitors won the first Test in Hyderabad but were completely outplayed in the next four games as they slumped to their first series defeat in the ‘Bazball’ era. Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin pointed out a major flaw in Bazball as he explained in his latest YouTube videothat no form of cricket can be played in a similar pattern and the lack of adaptability ended up being the biggest problem for the England side.

“Test cricket, or any other form of cricket for that matter, cannot be played like an airplane on a runway. We cannot step on the pedal and accelerate till we take off! It’s the same as driving on highways. Sometimes, when I think of it, is it because of how they drive in England? Driving in England is bliss. No one comes in between. You can keep driving in the same lane. We cannot overtake on the left. They never expect unexpected things. If they see something unexpected, they crash. I have a feeling they will be very confused if they see how we drive in India,” Ashwin explained.

“In India you cannot always drive in the fourth gear. We keep changing gears. We always keep one foot on the brake. This concept is alien to them! Crawley always gets momentum, but cannot keep it going. Bazball is about the transfer of pressure onto the opponents. But after the transfer of pressure, what happens? They should be like, ‘we have to make them pay!’ If they manage to do that, then the game is on. This series would have gone their way with the inexperience we had (in our ranks). They had a huge chance. Even before they came here, they were down 0-2 in the Ashes and levelled it at 2-2. They then plundered Pakistan at their home. But this series loss is something that Ben Stokes and Co could learn from,” he added.

Meanwhile, a nine-wicket haul in his 100th Test match helped Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin re-claim the top spot in the bowlers’ list of the latest ICC rankings on Wednesday.

Ashwin was at his best throughout the Dharamsala contest against England as the experienced right-armer picked up four wickets in the first innings and then a 36th five-wicket haul in the second innings as India cruised to a dominant triumph in the fifth and final Test of their series.

The big haul helped Ashwin move past teammate Jasprit Bumrah into the premier position that he previously held earlier this year, the ICC said in a statement.

R Ashwin had an eventful India vs England Test series. The veteran spinner played his 100th Test and even claimed his 500th wicket in the format. However, not all was good for the star bowler as his mother Chitra faced a health emergency in the middle of the series. He had to leave the camp in the middle of the Rajkot Test to be by his mother’s side. On the second day of the Test match, Ashwin dismissed England’s Zak Crawley to pocket his 500th Test scalp. However, hours after the feat, Ashwin went through a traumatic experience for which he had to leave the squad on an immediate basis.

Ravichandran Ashwin has withdrawn from the Test squad, effective immediately due to a family medical emergency. In these challenging times, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the team fully supports Ashwin,” said BCCI in its release. Reports said Ashwin’s mother Chitra had suffered a medical emergency.

Ashwin recounted recently what he went though on that night. “We went to the dressing room for another debrief and then back to our rooms. Rohit, me, and others were just discussing some things about the match here and there.

“That is when I realized I was not getting calls from my parents or wife. I thought they were busy attending calls and giving interviews. I called my wife around 7 PM, asking why my parents weren’t answering my call. Her voice was a bit shaky. She asked me to come separately from the crowd and told me that my mother collapsed after a headache,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

“I blanked out. I did not know how to react or what questions to ask. I was crying but wanted to ensure nobody was watching me cry. It is unnecessary to think of it that way, but it was instinctive. I could not think. I was crying in my room for some time.

The reference to his mom came back in one of his social media posts which said that the match figures of his debut Test and his 100th Test were same. “No improvement after all these years of playing the game. “Only my mom can say things like this”” he wrote in an hilarious post on X.

Veteran Indian cricket team spinner Ravichandran Ashwin gave a damning verdict on Bazball with special mentions for James Anderson and Joe Root following the 4-1 win in the recently-concluded five-match series. Ashwin mentioned Anderson’s claims ahead of Day 4 of the second Test match where he said that England will look to chase down the 399-run target within 60 overs. The result is quite different as the visitors were bowled out and defeated comprehensively. Ashwin expressed surprise at the over the top statement and said that although it was a show of positive mindset, the statement “went too far”.

“James Anderson went into a press conference in the second Test after winning the first considerably well. Much respect to them for winning that. He told the press that even if the 4th innings target was 500 or 600, we’ll finish it in 60 overs. Even though it was an example of their positive mindset, it felt like they had gone too far,” Ashwin said on hisYouTube channel.

Ashwin also believes that Bazball leans more towards being a ‘defenseless cricket’ and although Joe Root is a great player of spin, his game was also impacted due to the style of cricket.

“The one thing I understood after the first Test is that Bazball isn’t just aggressive cricket. It is defenseless cricket. They aren’t going to play a defensive shot at all. They are going to get out if they play defense. To my surprise, Joe Root also agreed to their game plan. Because if you take world cricket’s vest defense rankings, Root is an easy number 1 on that list against spin. He also bought into their approach,” he said.

On the second day of the Rajkot Test match, Ashwin dismissed England’s Zak Crawley to pocket his 500th Test scalp. Before him, only Anil Kumble reached the milestone among Indians. He became the ninth bowler worldwide to take 500 wickets. However, hours after the feat, Ashwin went through a traumatic experience for which he had to leave the squad on an immediate basis.  “Ravichandran Ashwin has withdrawn from the Test squad, effective immediately due to a family medical emergency. In these challenging times, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the team fully supports Ashwin,” said BCCI in its release. Reports said Ashwin’s mother Chitra had suffered a medical emergency.

Now, Ashwin has revealed how exactly thing transpired.

“Then, the team physio checked on me as I was not picking up calls. Rahul Bhai and Rohit Bhai also came to check on me, and all I could tell them was that I could not think clearly,” he added.

The Indian cricket team just finished a 4-1 rout of England in a five-Test series. Rohit Sharma marshalled a young Indian cricket team with absolute control as the side consolidated its place on top of the World Test Championship standings. The loss was a first for the Bazaball era in England Test cricket. There was much hype surrounding England’s aggressive brand of Test cricket under coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes. They won the first Test too but later could not stop India.

Former Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar commented on the sledging Incidents between the two teams during the series.

“That is also the reason why the England and Indian players get into verbal skirmishes so often when they are playing against each other. Not a lot of England players are picked in the IPL, mainly because they can be withdrawn by their Board anytime for a preparation camp or something, which leaves the franchises in a lurch,” Sunil Gavaskar wrote in a column for Sportstar.

“Some of them can’t stomach the fees for which some of the Indian players are bought and compare their achievements at the international level when the IPL auction dynamics can be so volatile and hard to explain or even understand. So you see more lip in the India-England encounters than in any other India match. That’s why the pleasure of beating England is always greater.”

Sunil Gavaskar also gave his take on England’s Bazball.

“When Ben Stokes’ team came to India, there was a buzz around it as they had started to play a brand of aggressive batting that the British media dubbed ‘Bazball’. This was because the new coach Brendon McCullum’s nickname is ‘Baz’. He encouraged the players to always go in with a positive mindset and to keep at it, irrespective of the result. The batting thus became ultra-aggressive, with players encouraged to hit sixes and fours with a dot ball as the least preferred option. Stokes wanted his players to play like rock stars, whatever that means, and with England beginning to win games, the fans and the media were euphoric,” he wrote.

“There’s no doubt that the batting was exciting to watch with the way the scoreboard rattled along. They even scored more than 500 runs in a day in Pakistan and then went on to win all the Test matches played there.

“However, all this batting frenzy was on good batting pitches against opposition attacks that weren’t quite threatening.”

A nine-wicket haul in his 100th Test match helped Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin re-claim the top spot in the bowlers’ list, while his captain Rohit Sharma was back in the top-10 at sixth in the batting charts of the latest ICC rankings on Wednesday.

Rohit, who smashed a hundred in Dharmsala, rose five places to sixth and within 108 rating points of No.1 ranked Test batter Kane Williamson.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (up two places to eighth) and Shubman Gill (up 11 spots to equal 20th) reached new career-best ratings following excellent individual series against Ben Stokes’ side.

Bumrah fell into a share of the second position with Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood following his six scalps in the second Test against New Zealand in Christchurch.

Ashwin’s teammate Kuldeep Yadav earned a new career-high rating and jumped 15 places to 16th overall on the latest rankings following his seven wickets and Player of the Match heroics against England.

New Zealand’s Matt Henry (up six spots to 12th) also moved up to a career-best mark.

India spinner Ravindra Jadeja remained well out in front of second-placed Ashwin in the updated list for Test all-rounders, with Australia skipper Pat Cummins (up two places to eighth) and Henry (up six spots to 11th) among the big movers.
