After the end of the fifth and final Test match against India in Dharamshala, England head coach Brendon McCullum said that the visitors were more “timid” as the series went on. While speaking to the media, McCullum said that they lacked confidence at the end of the series as Rohit Sharma’s India put a lot of pressure on the visitors. “If anything, we got more timid as the series went on, and that was because of the pressure that was applied to us by the Indian line-up, not just with the ball. With the bat, they put us under a tremendous amount of pressure, too,” McCullum was quoted by ESPNCricinfo as saying.

The head coach added that they were exposed in front of the Indian side during the five-match Test series.

“Sometimes, you can get away with things. But when you’re exposed the way we have been in the back end of this series in particular, it does require some pretty deep thinking and some adjustment to make sure we’re staying true to what we believe in,” he added.

The former New Zealand batter accepted that England will have to get better in some areas after being exposed in the Test series against India.

“There are some things where you can get a little bit of luck on your side and paper over a couple of the cracks. When you are exposed to the way we have been here, you know that you have to get better in some areas. The next couple of months will be us working out that and making sure when we come to the summer we are a more refined version of what we are at the minute,” he added.

England lost their fourth consecutive match in the series, unable to capitalise on their early 1-0 advantage following a narrow victory in Hyderabad. The visitors had their chances, notably in Rajkot and Ranchi, but India came back strong on both occasions to win.

India defeated England by 4-1 in the five-match Test series. In the fifth and final match, the hosts sealed a massive win by an innings and 64 runs over the English side.

Legendary South African cricketer AB De Villiers believes that although Rajat Patidar has disappointed with his performances in the ongoing Test series against England, he can retain his place in the side due to the prevalent culture in the team. In a recent video, De Villiers pointed out that skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid has created a team culture where young players are given time to regain his form. Patidar averages just 10.5 in his Test career at the moment with one 30-plus knock.

“Rajat Patidar not having the series of a lifetime or the one to remember. But the good thing about this Indian team and the culture is that you will survive in that side because of the great cricket they are playing and the results coming their way,” de Villiers said on his YouTube channel.

De Villiers also advised Rohit and Dravid to give Patidar a chance if his “attitude is catchy” or if he is “a likable character in the dressing room” because with results going in their favour, they have the chance to give more time to youngsters and show trust in a talent who may have a potential to make it big.

“If Patidar’s attitude is catchy and if he is a likable character in the dressing room, Rohit and the selection panel will have the ability to say, ‘Hold on, we do believe this guy has a future and we see him as a part of the team moving forward. Even though he hasn’t been scoring runs, let’s give him a longer run’.”

India will take on England in the fifth Test match in Dharamsala starting March 7.

Former India cricketer Suresh Raina was all praise for Rohit Sharma for the player’s leadership skills. Raina even compared the Indian team skipper to legendary captain MS Dhoni. The Indian cricket team, led by Rohit, recently sealed the five-match Test series against England with a game to go. India were trailing 0-1 before making a sensational comeback. Rohit and Co. won a hat-trick of matches against the Three Lions to keep India’s home dominance intact. It was India’s 17th consecutive Test series win on home soil.

“He is the next MS Dhoni. He has done well. He has been giving a lot of chances to youngsters the way MS Dhoni did. I played a lot of cricket under MS Dhoni. Sourav Ganguly supported his team a lot. Then MS Dhoni came and led from the front. Rohit is going in the right direction. He is a brilliant captain,” Raina told Times of India.

“Rohit has been amazing with his planning. He has been giving a lot of chances to the youngsters. The way he is rotating the players is something I have never seen in the last couple of years. Whenever the fast bowlers came in the last couple of years, we have seen injuries. But Rohit has been managing that really well,” he added.

Former captain Nasser Hussain on Monday said that England should not feel ashamed of losing the Test series to India, as Rohit Sharma’s side are the deserved winners in view of the skill-set as well as the mental toughness they possess.

England suffered their first Test series defeat of the ‘Bazball’ era after India beat them by five wickets in the fourth and penultimate Test in Ranchi to take an unassailable lead in the five-match affair.

Shubman Gill, who played a match winning knock for India in the fourth Test against England, revealed the piece of advice that he gave to Dhruv Jurel. Jurel and Gill’s unbeaten 82-run stand sealed a famous series win for India and a five-wicket victory in the fourth Test. This was India’s 17th series win in home conditions. After the game, Gill opened up about the advice that he gave to Jurel during their match winning partnership and disclosed that he asked him to play with the same mindset that he played with in the first innings which saw him score 90.

“I just told him (Jurel) you batted beautifully in the first innings and to have the same mindset, try to use the feet to negate the off-spinner. The way he came down and played was beautiful,” Gill said while speaking to the host broadcaster during the post match presentation.

England throughout the day made India work hard for each run, especially after India were reduced to 120/5.

“We were put under pressure by them, but we got a good start by our openers, losing couple of wickets put pressure. But Jurel came out and took the pressure off. You have to see the situation and play accordingly – they were bowling well and protecting the boundaries, also not giving maidens and keep picking the singles (was the mindset),” Gill stated.

Throughout his knock of 52*, Gill effortlessly used his feet to pick up singles and rotate the strike. His footwork was evident when he struck back-to-back sixes in Shoaib Bashir’s over to take India close to the finishing line.

Gill spoke about his approach and revealed that he used his feet to avoid getting trapped in front of the stumps.

“The first innings the ball was not turning much and hence I didn’t use my feet, but second innings I decided to take the LBW out of the equation by using my feet. It means the world to us, coming here and having to play the series with not much batting experience, having lost KL after the first Test.. but Rohit Bhai backed us and gave us the confidence to go out and play with freedom,” Gill signed off saying.

India now head to Dharamshala for the last test of the 5 Test series with the series under their belt.
