Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma asked KL Rahul to collect the trophy after the ODI series against Australia as the wicket-keeper batter led the side in the first two games. Rohit was rested for the first two matches and he made a return for the third one in Rajkot. India went down fighting in the match on Wednesday but were able to clinch the series 2-1 thanks to wins in Mohali and Indore. It was a heartwarming gesture from Rohit and the video of the incident went viral on social media.

Australia saved their best for the last as Indian middle-order wilted under pressure exerted by part-time off-spin of Glenn Maxwell, losing the third ODI by 66 runs.

India however won the series 2-1.

“I’m pretty happy, of course, I would like to go all the way along but if I’m hitting like that I’m happy. The last 7-8 ODIs we have played really well, we have been challenged under different conditions and different teams, I thought we responded to that challenge pretty well. Unfortunately not the result we wanted today,” Rohit said after the match.

India were cruising along at 171 for 2 chasing a stiff target of 353 on a placid track but the middle-order crumbled in chase with Maxwell (4/40) getting crucial breakthroughs to restrict the hosts to 286 in 49.4 overs.

Skipper Rohit Sharma (81) and Kohli struck fifties to provide the middle-order with a perfect platform in the big chase, but the rest floundered to hand Australia the advantage.

Earlier, Mitchell Marsh (96) headlined Australia’s best batting show with David Warner, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne helping themselves to attacking half-centuries during a commanding performance to break a five-ODI losing streak.

The two teams will now play a couple of warm-up games before meeting again in 10 days’ time for the tournament-opener in Chennai on October 8.

The two teams will now play a couple of warm-up games before meeting again in 10 days’ time for the tournament-opener in Chennai on October 8.

While Marsh missed reaching triple figure by a whisker, Australia’s batters came good collectively in what was their last official ODI before the start of the World Cup.

Warner had himself to blame for his dismissal after a fiery 56 off 34 balls (6x4s, 4x6s), but he set the tone for Australia early on.

Smith also put brakes on his poor run of scores to make a rapid 74 and towards the end, Labuschagne upped the ante with his 58-ball knock to help Australia post their challenging score.

Labuschagne also became Australia’s top run-getter in the ongoing calendar year.

During the chase, Rohit clobbered six sixes and five fours to race to 81 from 57 balls and recorded his ninth fifty against Australia and 53rd overall, while Kohli, who looked good for his 48th ODI ton had to settle for 66th half-century.

The two batters put on 70 for the second wicket and took India close to the 150-run mark by the 21st over, but after Rohit and Kohli were dismissed, the others fumbled collectively.

Maxwell accounted for Washington Sundar (18) and then held onto a stunning reflex catch of Rohit, had Kohli mistime a pull-shot and fooled Shreyas Iyer (48) with a beauty to mark an impressive return after a six-month long injury layoff.

Josh Hazlewood took 2/42 and Cameron Green claimed 2/30 to provide ideal support for Maxwell.

Rohit began with two spectacular sixes off Mitchell Starc over cover and pulled Pat Cummins twice over midwicket with command to provide early impetus.

The India captain, coming off a two-game break, hit the straps immediately which also made up for the dot balls his first-wicket partner Washington Sundar consumed.

The makeshift opener Washington Sundar pulled Hazlewood for his first four and smacked Cummins for a six – reminiscent of his famous six from the 2020-21 Australia tour – but perished for 18 off 30 balls.

Rohit and Kohli went about their jobs unchallenged for the better part of their stand, but their association came to an abrupt end in the 21st over when Maxwell, taking an evasive action on a powerful shot from the India skipper, ended up catching the ball one-handed.

Maxwell continued to make inroads as this time he got the key wicket of Kohli, who, looking to clear Steve Smith at midwicket, got a top edge, which was collected by the fielder running behind.

Despite a set platform to take the mantle, India’s middle-order stuttered which allowed Australia to grab control.

KL Rahul added 52 runs with Iyer for the fourth wicket but fell to Starc after a 30-ball 26 and Suryakumar Yadav (8) pulled one short from Hazlewood to Maxwell.

Maxwell then cleaned up Iyer for a 43-ball 48 (1x4s, 2x6s) and Hazlewood had Kuldeep Yadav chop one onto his wickets.

Ravindra Jadeja scored 35 from 36 balls (3x4s, 1x6s) but had no batting partner left to try avoiding the inevitable.

Glenn Maxwell took a sensational reflex catch to dismiss Rohit Sharma during the third ODI match between India and Australia in Rajkot on Wednesday. Rohit looked in tremendous form as he took Australian bowlers to the cleaners and he looked well on course to a big score. However, while batting on 81, he slammed the ball hard straight towards the bowler Maxwell. The Australia all-rounder did not have much time to react but he was able to extend his hand and the somehow complete the catch. Maxwell was completely stunned by his own effort and Rohit could not hide his disappointment after the dismissal.

India will be facing Australia in the third ODI match against Australia on Wednesday in Rajkot. The hosts have already taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and will now play for a clean sweep. In the third ODI, Rohit Sharma will return as the skipper while the likes of Virat Kohli and Kuldeep Yadav will also be back. On the other hand, Rohit also informed on Tuesday that certain players will be missing out from the third match as some of them have caught viral fever while few of them are travelling back home.

It will be an interesting encounter as Team India will be having a choice of only 13 players to form their Playing XI.

Here’s what we think could be India’s Predicted XI for the 3rd ODI against Australia:

Rohit Sharma:After missing out on the first two matches, the India skipper will be back to lead the Men in Blue in the final clash. Rohit, who smashed three half-centuries in the recently concluded Asia Cup, will now look to deliver a strong performance in the third ODI.

Ishan Kishan:The young wicketkeeper-batter is looking in sublime form. After a mediocre outing in the first match, Ishan redeemed himself in the second one with his quick knock of 31 off 18 balls. He will be eyeing a fiery show in the final match.

Virat Kohli:The star India batter stunned everyone with his 122*-run knock against Pakistan in the Asia Cup. However, he could not repeat his heroics and got dismissed for single digit scores in the next few matches. He will look to put up a good show with the bat now.

Shreyas Iyer:The 28-year-old batter impressed everyone with his fiery century against Australia in the 2nd ODI. He also bagged the Player of the Match award for his performance. The inclusion of Iyer is important as he strengthens India’s middle-order.

KL Rahul:In the absence of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul led Team India to victory in the first two games. The wicketkeeper-batter played a key role in the team’s win as he smashed half-centuries in both the matches.

Suryakumar Yadav:The fiery T20I batter, who was struggling to get runs in the 50-over format, played a massive knock of 72* in 37 balls. Suryakumar’s form in a good news for Team India, especially ahead of the World Cup.

Ravindra Jadeja:The all-rounder look in great touch with the ball in the second ODI as he took three wickets. However, Jadeja need to fire with the bat as well.

Ravichandran Ashwin:The spine maestro also impressed everyone with his three-wicket haul against Australia in the second ODI. He will now look to deliver a similar performance in the final match.

Kuldeep Yadav:The wrist spinner emerged as a star for India as he played a crucial role in the team’s triumph at the Asia Cup. He also won the Player of the Series award for his heroic spells. Kuldeep missed out on the first two matches but will now be back in action.

Jasprit Bumrah:The star pacer missed out on the second match due to personal reasons. However, he will return to action in the third match and will look to deliver a strong performance.

Mohammed Siraj:The right-arm pacer broke several records during the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka. He registered the second-best bowling figures in the history of the tournament with his six-wicket haul. He will now aim to dominate Australian batters with his fiery spells.

Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma said on Tuesday that he has just 13 players to choose from for the final ODI match against Australia in Rajkot. Shubman Gill was not available for selection after the squad was hit by a viral sickness while fast bowlers Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Shami along with all-rounder Hardik Pandya opted to go back home. While there is not much tension among the team management as the side has already sealed the three-match series against Australia, they would like all the players to regain match fitness in time for the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2023.

“We have got a lot of players who are sick and not available, a lot of players have personal problems so they have gone home and a few of the guys have been rested as well. We have got 13 players at this point in time,” said Rohit during the pre-match press meet.

“Obviously, Gill has been rested, Shami, Hardik and Shardul have all gone home…again, personal things. Axar, obviously, is not available for this game,” Rohit said.

Rohit said the viral sickness going around the group too has added to the uncertainty.

“There is a bit of viral going around in the team as well. So, there is a lot of uncertainty in the team at this point in time which we cannot help,” he added.

Axar Patel is recuperating at NCA from the left quadricep injury that he suffered during the Asia Cup.

“Looking at the next few weeks it is quite important for us to look after the players and their well-being.”

“So, it is okay for them to be at home at this point — the reason being we want everybody to be fresh during the World Cup and hopefully they can come back fresh,” he said.

Skipper Rohit Sharma would fancy a perfect culmination to the Indian team’s World Cup preparations as hosts eye a rare clean sweep of Australia in the third and final ODI here on Wednesday. Never before in the history have India whitewashed Australia in the ODI format. In fact, neither of them have achieved such a result, home or away, irrespective of the number of matches played in a series. Given how perfectly everything has panned out for the World Cup hosts in the lead up to the mega tournament, it would only be fitting that India finish with a deserving 3-0 score-line.

Dominant Indian team, despite the absence of its front-line players and still tinkering with playing combinations to make sure every member has had game-time under their belt, are in pole position to record a fourth consecutive ODI win before the quadrennial event begins.

If they manage to clinch a 3-0 win, India would also have taken a massive upper-hand over the five-time world champions Australia before the two teams meet again in Chennai on October 8 for their World Cup opener.

It will be no exaggeration in saying India have battered Australia in the first two ODIs despite both the rivals making plenty of changes to keep their top guns fresh, while also putting miles in the legs of those who would not usually feature in first-choice XIs.

There could, however, be some respite for the Australian bowlers as India have rested their young gun Shubman Gill for the final ODI after his 74 and 104 in the first two games, alongwith Shardul Thakur.

In the 50-overs World Cup year, Gill is the only batter in the format with a thousand runs and counting — 1,230 runs to be precise at a staggering average of 72.35 — and his absence from the final game would certainly be felt.

But India’s batting mainstays Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are expected to return and so are the in-form Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya from a brief resting period during which KL Rahul has led admirably.

Facing some tough questions over squad composition, players’ form, fitness and availability, India have turned the tide and how.

That India would end up with a problem of plenty was something not envisaged when the team embarked on the Asia Cup campaign just a few weeks ago. But the likes of Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Mohammed Shami and even Mohammed Siraj have transformed this Indian outfit into as formidable a unit can get.

He took some time to get going and again struggled with his back-related troubles, but Shreyas Iyer utilised perfect batting conditions in Indore to record a century, which will also consolidate his position in the middle-order.

Much to the delight of the Indian camp, Rahul has delivered the goods with the bat and behind the stumps at the most appropriate time.

Like Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah too has proven his fitness and form in a few matches after a long injury lay-off. After resting from the second ODI, India’s premier bowler is available for selection.

Even though the team management appears tilted in favour of injured Axar Patel, oldest member of the Indian squad Ravichandran Ashwin would like to make this opportunity count before the contingent is finalised for the World Cup.

For Australia, it is not often that they flop both with the bat and the ball in India with the white ball as miserably as they have in the first two ODIs. The visitors need to gather themselves as the wheels seem to be coming off rapidly following five consecutive defeats in ODIs.

A few months ago, the same side beat India 2-1 with Mitchell Starc haunting the Indian right-handers with his perfect in-swingers.

With one last game left before the World Cup begins, Australia would be tempted to play their preferred bowling attack with Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc coming in, even though the batting lacks the firepower of Travis Head at the top and Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne not enjoying a successful year of cricket in India across formats.

Squads: India: Rohit Sharma (c), KL Rahul (wk), Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Hardik Pandya, Virat Kohli, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin, Washington Sundar.

Australia: Pat Cummins (c), Steve Smith, David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey (wk), Josh Inglis (wk), Matthew Short, Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa.

Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill scored dominating centuries as India routed Australia by 99 runs (DLS method) in a rain-hit ODI on Sunday. The victory helped India gain an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Iyer (105) Gill (104) put on a dominant second-wicket stand of 200 to lay the foundations for India’s 399 for 5 after being invited to bat in Indore. Stand-in-skipper KL Rahul‘s 52 and an unbeaten 72 by T20 sensation Suryakumar Yadav contributed to the mammoth total and the bowlers then combined to hand India an unbeatable lead.

Due to rain, Australia’s chase was curtailed to 317 in 33 overs midway. The Steven Smith-led side was never really in the game, but Sean Abbott‘s 54 off 36 towards the end did frustrate the Indian bowlers. Number eight batter Abbott put on a ninth-wicket stand of 77 runs with Josh Hazlewood, who made 23.

Talking about the innings played by the Australia tail-ender, Pakistan great Saeed Anwar pointed out that India need to work on their bowling skills in slog overs.

While reacting to the news of India’s victory over Australia in second ODI, Anwar wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “But that inning of S. Abbott was gorgeous & terrible for India. In addition, I can sum up by saying, that India is the favorite to win the WC, but those small boundaries & death bowling will be the cause to prevent them.”

Chasing the DLS revised target, Australia were bowled out for 217 in 28.2 overs. Spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each.
