Former India U-19 World Cup winning captain Unmukt Chand has opened up on his absence from USA’s squad for the recently-concluded T20 World Cup. Chand took retirement from Indian cricket in 2021 before shifting base to the USA for better cricketing opportunities. After playing in the inaugural edition of the Major League Cricket (MLC), as well as other franchise tournaments, Chand became eligible to play for the USA. He had also expressed his wish of playing against India in the T20 World Cup, only to be left out of the squad.

Chand revealed that he was shocked after being left out of T20 World Cup squad, added that he had a feeling of being “sucked inside”.

“That wasn’t an ideal situation to be in. Because personally for me, this was what I had dreamed for the last three years. Obviously, it was a big shock. And it took me time to sort of come to terms with it. It’s never easy as a player, having lost all those things back home in India, to having this one goal, which had kept me going for the last three years not happening. So it is difficult. I won’t say which just happened. But it was difficult. I was not my best self for some time,” Chand told Cricbuzz.

Chand also spoke about his inner demons and said that it took a lot of ups and downs to overcome that feeling.

“That was a very internal battle and it’s a sucker basically. It keeps sucking you inside and inside. That feeling would linger on for a day and then go away and then come back again. The reality would hit me in different phases. Once you keep going through that automatically you keep getting better. There comes a time when you’re like it didn’t happen, that’s it. I’m not even thinking about it,” he added.

Chand, 31, has a point to prove, and started off the second season of Major League Cricket (MLC) – USA’s franchise T20 league – with a swashbuckling half-century.

Interestingly, Chand’s present MLC franchise is Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR), who are owned by the Knight Riders group. Many might remember that Chand’s downfall started when he was famously clean bowled by Kolkata Knight Riders pacer Brett Lee in the opening ball of IPL 2013. He made 68 off 45 balls, hitting six 4s and three 6s.

“People Cribbing About Unfair Systems”: India’s U-19 World Cup-Winning Captain’s Cryptic Post After USA Squad Snub https://artifex.news/people-cribbing-about-unfair-systems-indias-u-19-world-cup-winning-captains-cryptic-post-after-usa-squad-snub-5334262/ Fri, 29 Mar 2024 13:20:41 +0000 https://artifex.news/people-cribbing-about-unfair-systems-indias-u-19-world-cup-winning-captains-cryptic-post-after-usa-squad-snub-5334262/ Read More ““People Cribbing About Unfair Systems”: India’s U-19 World Cup-Winning Captain’s Cryptic Post After USA Squad Snub” »

India’s Under-19 World Cup winning captain Unmukt Chand has reacted with a cryptic post after being overlooked for USA’s upcoming five-match T20I series against Canada. The player, who led India to 2012 Under-19 World Cup title, shifted his base to USA in 2021 — a move that he seemingly took due to the lack of cricketing opportunities in India. Chand was set to qualify for USA national cricket team this month, however, his snub for the upcoming Canada T20I series has dented his hopes of representing USA in the T20 World Cup 2024.

USA’s T20I series vs Canada will kick off on April 7 while the last match will be played on April 13. After this, USA will be taking on Bangladesh in a three-match T20I series, which will be followed by T20 World Cup.

“Irony of life- I keep hearing people cribbing about unfair systems in place and the need for healthy changes but when the same people come to power, they practice the same unjust means too. It’s high time we bring the change within ourselves and stand firm for what’s right,” wrote Chand on X after USA announced their 15-man squad for Canada T20Is.

Chand was left out of the USA squad despite scoring 1500 runs in 45 Major League Cricket (MLC) games. He is the second all-time leading run-scorer in the tournament’s history.

Meanwhile, Monank Patel will lead USA against Canada, with the first game in Houston, Texas on April 7.

Corey Anderson, a former New Zealand all-rounder, is also set to mark his return to international cricket after six years.

The 33-year-old played 13 Tests, 49 ODIs and 31 T20Is for New Zealand from 2012 to 2018 and once held the record for the fastest hundred in ODIs.

USA Squad for Canada T20I series

Monank Patel (Captain), Aaron Jones (Vice-Captain), Andries Gous, Corey Anderson, Gajanand Singh, Harmeet Singh, Jessy Singh, Milind Kumar, Nisarg Patel, Nitish Kumar, Noshtush Kenjige, Saurabh Netravalkar, Shadley Van Schalkwyk, Steven Taylor, Usman Rafiq

Reserves: Shayan Jahangir, Juanoy Drysdale, Saiteja Mukkamalla

Shreevats Goswami, who was part of India’s U-19 World Cup-winning team in 2008, has alleged that a match in Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) first division league looked like it was fixed. Taking to Facebook, the former crickter shared a couple of clips from the fixture between Mohammedan Sporting and Town Club. The video seemingly shows two Mohammedan Sporting batters, one right-handed and the other left, throwing away their wickets with purpose.

Goswami emphasised that club cricket is the heart and soul of Bengal, urging the management not to ruin it.

“This is a Super Division match in Kolkata Club Cricket, two big teams doing this, any idea what’s going on here? “I am ashamed to see this having played the game which is so close to my heart. I love cricket and I love playing in Bengal but looking at this breaks my heart. Club cricket is heart and soul of Bengal cricket please don’t ruin it. I think this is called ‘got up’ cricket. Where is the media now?” Goswami posted on Facebook.

The CAB, however, is yet to respond to the allegations.

Meanwhile, Goswami announced his retirement from Test cricket in October last year.

He drew curtains on a 15-year long career, having made his debut for Bengal in 2008.

“Announcing my retirement from first-class cricket. It has been an incredible journey on the cricket field, and it feels like the right time to call it off. It has been an honor and privilege to play this beautiful game for as long as I did as well as represent various teams and IPL franchises,” Goswami had posted on X (formerly Twitter).

“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my teammates, coaches, CAB and the BCCI, and everyone who supported me throughout my career. I am grateful to my family, who have been a pillar of strength for me throughout my cricketing journey. Cricket has given me countless memories and lifelong friendships to cherish,” he added.

Goswami played under Virat Kohli‘s captaincy during the 2008 U19 World Cup in Malaysia. India lifted the title after beating South Africa in the final.

Unfortunately, Goswami never really manage to break into the Indian senior team.
