Thailand consul general discusses tourism promotion with Lieutenant Governor of Andaman Island

Siriporn Tantipanyathep, the Consul General of Thailand in Kolkata, discussed tourism promotion with the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Devendra Kumar Joshi, an official statement said.

The envoy, who was accompanied by the Director of the Thai Trade Centre, Chennai, Chek Jeenaphan, called on the Lieutenant Governor at the Lok Niwas here on Tuesday (May 20, 2026) and discussed avenues for mutual cooperation in the fields of fisheries and tourism, prospects for direct overseas flights and investment in the various sectors.

The Thai official highlighted how the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Thailand could play a pivotal role in creating high-quality travel experiences, wellness tourism and destination weddings, besides having immense potential in sectors like fisheries, adventure tourism and luxury resorts.

“Siriporn Tantipanyathep and the Lieutenant Government (in consideration with the Centre) have agreed on assisting each other in the development of the archipelago and Thailand. The meeting aligned with the Government of India’s Holistic Development of Islands (HDI) framework and seeks to position the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a premier global destination for sustainable, nature-led tourism,” the statement said.

Already, well-known hospitality giants won the bids to build three luxury eco-friendly tourism resorts at Long Island, Aves Island and Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, it said.

Emphasising low-impact design, each resort will operate on self-sustaining systems powered primarily by renewable energy, including solar installations, ensuring minimal ecological footprint and seamless integration with the islands’ natural landscapes.

Sources said all the stakeholders from both countries will meet soon to take this discussion further to give it shape towards promoting tourism.

International flight services from Andaman and Nicobar Islands to Thailand will also be discussed in the next meeting, they added.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Maris Sangiampongsa is scheduled to meet his Indian counterpart S. Jaishankar in Delhi on November 2, 2024, as part of his soon-to-begin visit to India, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Mr. Sangiampongsa is expected to arrive in Delhi late on Thursday (October 31, 2024) night and depart on November 3, as per his itinerary shared in an advisory by the MEA.

On November 1, the Thai Minister will have engagements in the national capital, while on November 2, he will meet External Affairs Minister Jaishankar at the South Block.

Mr. Sangiampongsa visited New Delhi from July 11–13 for the second BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers’ Retreat hosted by the Indian External Affairs Minister and for his first official visit to India.

On July 12, Mr. Jaishankar held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Sangiampongsa and hosted a lunch in his honour. During the meeting, the two ministers reviewed progress across various areas of partnership, covering political exchanges, defence and security ties, trade and investment opportunities, connectivity, science and technology collaboration, health cooperation, culture and people-to-people interaction.

The two Ministers had also exchanged views on issues of mutual interest and reiterated their commitment to closer cooperation in sub-regional, regional and multilateral forums, the MEA had said earlier.

In accordance with the vision of the Prime Ministers of the two countries, the Ministers had reaffirmed the mutual desire for a stronger India-Thailand partnership, it had said in a statement.

Thailand is a key partner of India in the ASEAN. The ‘Act East’ Policy of India which marks its 10th year in 2024, finds convergence with the ‘Act West’ Policy of Thailand.

“Interactions between the Indian External Affairs Minister and the Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs have contributed to further strengthening of bilateral ties,” the MEA said.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Thai counterpart Maris Sangiampongsa have reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation in areas of trade, connectivity and investment.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said this on July 14, two days after the two foreign ministers held talks on the sidelines of a meeting of the BIMSTEC grouping.

“The two ministers reviewed progress across various areas of partnership covering political exchanges, defence and security ties, trade and investment opportunities, connectivity, science and technology collaboration, health cooperation, culture and people-to-people interaction,” the MEA said.

A key member of the 10-nation ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) grouping, Thailand is seen by India as a crucial strategic partner in the Southeast Asian region.

“The two ministers also exchanged views on issues of mutual interest and reiterated commitment to closer cooperation in sub-regional, regional and multilateral fora,” it said.

On July 12, Mr. Jaishankar held a meeting with the Thai minister and hosted a lunch in his honour.

The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), brings together seven countries of South and Southeast Asia for multifaceted cooperation.

In accordance with the vision of the two Prime Ministers, Mr. Jaishankar and Mr. Sangiampongsa reaffirmed the mutual desire for a stronger India-Thailand partnership, the MEA said.

It said Thailand is a key partner of India in the ASEAN.
