U.S. President Donald Trump has said he would love his legacy to be made as a great peacemaker as he claims to have stopped eight wars, including the one between India and Pakistan last year.

Addressing the Saudi-backed Future Investment Initiative (FII) Priority Summit in Miami, Mr. Trump also said reopening the Strait of Hormuz was a condition for any agreement with Iran and stressed that maritime access for oil shipments must be restored.

“We’re negotiating now, and it would be great if we could do something, but they have to open it up,” he said.

The U.S. President reiterated his claim that he helped stop eight wars, including those between Armenia and Azerbaijan; the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda; Cambodia and Thailand; Egypt and Ethiopia; Serbia and Kosovo; Israel and Hamas.

“I would love my legacy to be made as a great peacemaker because I really believe I am a peacemaker. It doesn’t seem like it right now, but I think I am a peacemaker,” Mr. Trump said.

“I even stopped India and Pakistan, and they were going at it for a week.. Nine planes already shot down. They were in a war. I stopped them. How did I stop them? I said, if you keep fighting, I’m going to put a 250% tariff on each one,” the U.S. President said.

“No, no, no, you cannot do that. I said, I’m doing it. All right, we won’t fight anymore. That’s how I stopped them.” Mr. Trump said.

‘Strait of Trump’

Mr. Trump jokingly referred to the Strait of Hormuz as the “Strait of Trump” during his remarks before correcting himself, later saying the comment was not accidental.

Mr. Trump described Iran as a longstanding force shaping instability in West Asia but said its position had weakened under the U.S. military operation Epic Fury.

“For 47 years, Iran has been known as the bully of the Middle East, but they are not the bully any longer. They’re on the run,” he said, adding that Iran’s leadership, armed forces, and nuclear program had suffered damage during the operation.

Mr. Trump refused to refer to the attacks on Iran as “war” and chose to refer to it as a military operation.

Slams NATO

The U.S. president was harshly critical of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for not “helping” him with the war with Iran.

“NATO is a paper tiger. And I always said we help NATO, but they never help us. And if the big one ever happened and I don’t think it will, but if the big one ever happened, I guarantee you they wouldn’t be there.” Mr. Trump reiterated that if the U.S. had not “knocked the hell” out of Iran, the country would have had a nuclear weapon “within two to four weeks” despite his insistence that the U.S. bombing of Iranian nuclear sites last year set its programs back years.

“They would have used it on you, and on Israel, and on everyone else,” he said, addressing the Saudi attendees. The president also hinted at potential action against Cuba.

“And Cuba is next by the way, but pretend I didn’t say that,” he said. “Please, please, please, media, disregard that statement. Thank you very much. Cuba’s next,” Mr. Trump said.

U.S. President Donald Trump repeated twice in a single day the claim that he stopped the war between India and Pakistan last year.

“In one year, I’ve ended eight raging wars, such as (the war between) Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, Pakistan and India, Israel and Iran, Armenia and Azerbaijan,” Mr. Trump said at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday (February 5, 2026).

Later, in a post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump reiterated the claim that he stopped a nuclear war from breaking out between India and Pakistan.

“The United States is the most powerful Country in the World. I completely rebuilt its Military in my First Term, including new and many refurbished nuclear weapons. I also added Space Force and now, continue to rebuild our Military at levels never seen before. We are even adding Battleships, which are 100 times more powerful than the ones that roamed the Seas during World War II — The Iowa, Missouri, Alabama, and others. I have stopped Nuclear Wars from breaking out across the World between Pakistan and India, Iran and Israel, and Russia and Ukraine,” Mr. Trump posted.

The U.S. President has claimed over 90 times that he stopped the conflict between India and Pakistan. He has been making the assertion repeatedly, on various platforms in the U.S. and around the world, since May 10 last year, when he announced on social media that India and Pakistan agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire after a “long night” of talks mediated by Washington.

India has consistently denied any third-party intervention.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday (November 18, 2025) repeated his claim that he stopped the war between India and Pakistan, as he addressed a bilateral meeting with the Saudi Crown Prince.

Mr. Trump repeated the claim during a bilateral meeting in the Oval Office in the White House with visiting Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman.

“I’ve stopped actually eight wars…. Have another one to go with, Putin. I’m a little surprised at Putin. It’s taken longer than I thought, but we stopped India and Pakistan. Wish I could go through the list. You know the list better than I do,” Mr. Trump said.

“I’m very proud. And I stopped one that was almost ready to start again. You know, there’s one that was ready to start, and they’re doing very well. So, it all took place right here in the Oval Office, whether by telephone or whether by they came in, many of these leaders have come in, and, you know, they signed their peace deals right here in the Oval Office,” Mr. Trump said as the Saudi Crown Prince and his delegation listened.

Since May 10, when Mr. Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” after a “long night” of talks mediated by Washington, he has repeated his claim several times that he “helped settle” the tensions between the two countries.

India has consistently denied any third-party intervention.

Pakistan has praised Mr. Trump on multiple occasions, claiming that he brokered a ceasefire during the May conflict.

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again claimed that he stopped the India and Pakistan war from “going nuclear” by threatening to impose tariffs and refusing to do any trade deals if they did not agree to a ceasefire.

Mr. Trump’s latest comments came on Tuesday (August 26, 2025) during a cabinet meeting at the White House, where he also claimed that he had spoken with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“I am talking to a very terrific man, Narendra Modi. I said, ‘What’s going on with you and Pakistan?’ The hatred was tremendous. This has been going on for a hell of a long time, like, sometimes with different names for hundreds of years,” the U.S. President said.

“I said, I don’t want to make a trade deal with you… You guys are going to end up in a nuclear war… I said, call me back tomorrow. But we’re not going to do any deals with you, or we’re going to put tariffs on you that are so high, your head’s going to spin,” he added.

“Within five hours, it was done. Maybe it starts again, but I will stop it if it does,” Mr. Trump went on to say.

Mr. Trump also claimed that “seven jets or maybe more than that” were shot down without elaborating which country’s aircraft he was referring to.

Mr. Trump’s comments came just hours before new tariffs totalling 50% on Indian goods were set to take effect on August 27.

Talking to the press at the White House on Monday (August 25, 2025), Mr. Trump claimed that he stopped seven wars around the world, including the one between India and Pakistan. He added that of the seven wars he stopped, four were because he used tariffs and trade to negotiate with the parties involved in the conflict.

Since May 10, when Mr. Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire after a “long night” of talks mediated by Washington, he has repeated his claim over 40 times that he “helped settle” the tensions between India and Pakistan.

India has been consistently maintaining that the understanding on cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was reached following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two militaries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said in Parliament that no leader of any country asked India to stop Operation Sindoor.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has categorically said there was no third-party intervention in bringing about a ceasefire with Pakistan during Operation Sindoor.
