Prime Minister Balendra Shah ‘Balen’ is set to hold separate bilateral meetings focussing on bilateral relations with the Indian and Chinese ambassadors to Nepal on Monday (August 10, 2026), the first such one-on-one diplomatic engagements after more than 100 days in office.

After meeting the Indian envoy first, followed by the Chinese counterpart, Mr. Shah will also meet with the U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires on Tuesday (August 11, 2026).

In a departure from a long tradition of individual meetings, Mr. Shah, who was sworn-in on March 27 after a landslide win, held a joint courtesy meeting on April 8 with as many as 17 Kathmandu-based Ambassadors and Heads of Diplomatic Missions, including those from India and China, at Singhadurbar, the prime minister’s office.

On Sunday (August 9, 2026), Foreign Ministry sources said Mr. Shah will meet Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava on Monday morning (August 10, 2026) and Chinese Ambassador Zhang Maoming later that afternoon.

It will be followed by a meeting with the U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Scott Urbom on Tuesday (August 11, 2026) and other envoys.

“The Indian ambassador is told to come first, followed by the Chinese ambassador. So both ambassadors are meeting the prime minister on the same day, but the earlier and later timings also show the foreign policy priority of the government,” a senior Foreign Ministry official told The Kathmandu Post.

The Foreign Ministry has communicated the appointments to the respective embassies, the Post said quoting a prime ministerial adviser.

The agenda is expected to be largely introductory, with the ambassadors briefing Mr. Shah on the state of bilateral relations and conveying any messages from their respective governments, it said.

The meetings were delayed due to recent communal violence in Terai and Madhesh region.

The Prime Minister had earlier avoided one-on-one engagements and even declined to meet the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Samir Paul Kapur and President Donald Trump’s special envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor.

Mr. Shah broke his self-imposed rule by holding a one-on-one meeting with Asian Development Bank President Masato Kanda, who visited Nepal for three days beginning July 6.

PM Shah had also not undertaken any visit to either the southern or the northern neighbour and instead Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal made back-to-back visits to New Delhi and Beijing in June.

Mr. Khanal had earlier said Nepal wants to build stronger and deeper relations with both India and China, describing the southern and northern neighbours as vital partners for the Himalayan nation and recently said Nepal wants to transform itself from a landlocked country into a “vibrant, dynamic bridge” connecting the two neighbours.

Kathmandu:

The Nepal Rastra Bank, the central bank of Nepal, has awarded to a Chinese company the contract to print new 100-rupee notes featuring the revised political map of the country.

Nepal’s Council of Ministers approved the design change for the 100-rupee note, which incorporates the three strategically important areas of Limpiyadhura, Lipulek, and Kalapani as part of Nepal.

The new political map was updated through a process on June 18, 2020, by incorporating Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura by amending its constitution, something that India already termed as “untenable” and the “artificial enlargement” of the territorial claims by Nepal.

India maintains Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura — in Western Nepal along the border — belongs to it.

The China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation has been awarded the contract after a competitive global tender process, according to English daily Republica.

The NRB has requested the company to design, print, supply, and deliver 300 million 100-rupee notes, with an estimated printing cost of about USD 8.99 million, reported the daily.

However, Nepal Rastra Bank’s spokesperson was not available when contacted for a comment.

The ties between India and Nepal came under severe strain after Kathmandu published the new political map in 2020 showing three Indian territories — Limpiyadhura, Kalapani and Lipulekh — as part of Nepal.

India reacted sharply, calling it a “unilateral act” and cautioned Kathmandu that such “artificial enlargement” of territorial claims will not be acceptable to it.

Nepal shares a border of over 1,850 km with five Indian states – Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
