It’s mind over matter for Hockey India as the sports body hired renowned South African mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton to assist the men’s national team in the Paris Olympics. Upton, who played a role in India winning the 2011 Cricket World Cup, will be a part of the support staff of the country’s men’s hockey team in Paris. He was also there when the team won gold medals at the recent Asian Champions Trophy and Asian Games. Indian men’s hockey team chief coach Craig Fulton confirmed to PTI that Upton will be with his wards at the Olympics.

“We have Paddy Upton, he will be with us in Australia (for Test series). We will be using him wisely. For sure he will be there for Olympics with us,” Fulton said when asked about the mental conditioning coach’s services.

Fulton, who is also a South African, believes that world ranked fourth India are still to reach their peak and there are plenty of bases to cover in the coming months.

“We are not complete yet but, in 4-5 months from the Olympics, we will be there.

“Ideally any high-performing team wants to win any tournament. That’s the ideal goal to be realistic. But realistically, we are ranked fourth in the world now, does that mean podium ‘right now no’ but that’s the beauty of hockey,” he said.

“Realistically, we are not there there yet but we still have time.” The coach said the Indian team is currently in a development phase.

“We are in a development phase with the squad. We are trying to create some depths in different positions. That’s important to do now because it really counts in crunch matches in Olympics,” he said.

Talking about India’s recent home campaign in the FIH Pro League, Fulton said said he was neither satisfied not disappointed.

“If you look at the four matches — 2 against Holland, 2 against Australia — I think we are disappointed with the second game against Australia, 5 minutes to go we were 2-1 up and then we made a mistake which got punished and then we lost the shoot-out,” he said.

“The first game was a strange one, we got to learn a lot of lessons there tactically, but to be 0-2 down after 90 seconds.

“But the Dutch games I feel we were really organised. But 2-2 I felt was fair result for both games. They are the league leaders and they are the team to chase at the moment.” Fulton is in no mood to make any drastic changes in the style of play and said the upcoming Australia tour holds great significance for the side.

“Now we are in Bhubaneswar for next three weeks for the training and then we go to Australia for five Test matches and that’s really important, and then we come back to Bengaluru and after selection is done, we leave for the Pro League.

“We are just carrying on with our training, we are focussed on becoming very strong defensively, we need to improve our offence. We are not changing a lot, just focussing on getting better and consistent,” he said.

India are scheduled to tour Australia from April 2 till 15 for a five-Test series in Perth.

Fresh turmoil hit Hockey India on Tuesday when its long-serving CEO Elena Norman resigned from her position owing to non-payment of dues for the past few months, sources in the national federation told PTI. The Australian held the -post for nearly 13 years and had not been paid for the last three months. Norman’s resignation comes days after the chief coach of the Indian women’s hockey team Janneke Schopman who claimed that she was not valued and respected by the national federation.

Norman’s resignation is another setback for the body, which did not give the exact reason for her departure in the official statement. However, a top source said Norman was upset about “non-payment of her dues for the last three months.” “She was also unhappy with the work environment,” the source added.

HI president and former India captain Dilip Tirkey, while accepting Norman’s resignation, expressed his gratitude towards the Australian.

“Not only as the President of Hockey India but also as a former player and avid hockey enthusiast, I want to formally acknowledge and extend my sincere gratitude for her remarkable contributions over the last 12-13 years,” Tirkey said in a statement.

“Her dedication and efforts have played a pivotal role in propelling Hockey India and Indian hockey to the commendable position they hold today. I wish her great success in all her future endeavours.” During the time she held the top job, the country’s men and women’s teams achieved career-best world rankings.

A historic bronze-medal finish by the men’s team at the Tokyo Olympic Games, ending a 41-year medal drought, was also a major accomplishment. The women also finished at an unprecedented fourth in the quadrennial showpiece.

Norman served a major part of her stint with HI when former international hockey federation (FIH) chief Narendra Batra was the president of the national body.

During her tenure, HI hosted two consecutive editions of FIH Men’s World Cup in 2018 and 2023, two Junior Men’s World Cup in 2016 and 2021 and also hosted five editions of the now-discontinued Hockey India League (HIL), a franchise-based league.

Besides, HI also hosted several international hockey events including the Champions Trophy, World League Finals in 2015 and 2017, Olympic Qualifiers in 2019 and 2024 as well as the Hockey Pro League home games during her tenure.

“Elena was also at the forefront of bringing women’s hockey to limelight, providing them equal facilities as the men’s hockey team, including cash awards recognising standout performances in international events through the Hockey India Annual Awards,” said a Hockey India statement.

“She was particularly instrumental in the success of the women’s team that qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics, a historic feat as the team qualified for the first time and participated in the Olympics after 36 years,” the statement added.

Continuing its dominating performance, India men’s hockey team defeated South Korea 5-3 in the semi-final to set up a summit clash at the Asian Games. Hardik Singh (5′), Mandeep Singh (11′), Lalit Kumar Upadhyay (15′), Amit Rohidas (24′) and Abhishek (54′) scored to guide the Indian men’s hockey team to the final. Jung Manjae (17′, 20′, 42′) scored a hat-trick for South Korea. The Indian men’s hockey team will face the winner of the other semi-final match between China and Japan in the gold medal match on Friday.

If India wins the final, it will be its fourth gold at the Asian Games and the team will book a place at Paris Olympics games next year.

Earlier, the Craig Fulton-coached India had topped Pool A after winning all their group games. South Korea finished as Pool B runner-up.

India, third in the men’s FIH rankings, started the match positively and went ahead five minutes into the match. A deft passing move down the right carved open the Korean defence before Hardik Singh slotted home to put India ahead.

Mandeep Singh could’ve doubled the advantage minutes later but the Indian forward, who had already scored 11 goals coming into the match, shot over the goal from close range.

Mandeep, however, didn’t have to wait long for his 12th goal of the tournament as he tapped in a Gurjant Singh pass to give India a 2-0 lead. Lalit Kumar Upadhyay added one more to India’s tally before the first quarter ended.

Jolted by the Indian hockey team’s fiery start, four-time Asian Games hockey champions Korea found an early response in the second quarter as Jung Manjae scored two – the first from a clever penalty corner routine and the second from open play – to reduce the deficit to a single goal.

Just when it looked that the Koreans had turned the tides in their favour, Amit Rohidas restored a two-goal cushion for India with a thunderous drag flick from a penalty corner. India led 4-2 at half-time.

After the break, India looked the better of the two sides with Harmanpreet Singh running the play from deep. Despite the Indian dominance, it was South Korea who scored with Jung Manjae deflecting in from an indirect penalty corner to complete his hat-trick.

South Korea came out of the blocks hard in search of an equaliser in the final quarter and put the Indian defence under pressure. The Indian backline rode out the siege before India finally found some breathing room thanks to Abhishek.

Abhishek won the ball near the Korean circle before driving in through a powerful reverse hit. Up 5-3, India held on to secure the victory and make their way to the final.
