Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour at the Perdana Putra building in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (February 8, 2026), as part of his ongoing two-day official visit to Malaysia.

The ceremonial reception at Perdana Putra took place after PM Modi’s arrival in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (February 7, 2026), when Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim personally welcomed him at the airport. Malaysian Minister of Human Resources Ramanan Ramakrishnan and Deputy Foreign Minister Lukanisman bin Awang Sauni were also present to extend the welcome.

The arrival ceremony featured a red-carpet welcome accompanied by traditional music and dance performances, celebrating the shared cultural heritage between India and Malaysia. Reflecting on the warm reception, PM Modi posted on X: “Deeply touched by the warm welcome extended by my friend, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the airport. I look forward to our conversations and to further strengthening the bonds of friendship between India and Malaysia.”

Later, both Prime Ministers travelled together in the same vehicle to the venue of an Indian community event in Kuala Lumpur, which PM Anwar Ibrahim also attended. Sharing an update on X, PM Modi wrote, “Celebrating the India-Malaysia people-to-people connect! PM Anwar Ibrahim and I are heading to the community programme in Kuala Lumpur.”

Following these welcoming engagements, PM Modi and PM Anwar Ibrahim are scheduled to hold wide-ranging bilateral discussions on Sunday (February 8, 2026). The talks are expected to result in multiple agreements aimed at expanding cooperation across various sectors.

In his departure statement before the visit, PM Modi had set the tone by highlighting the priorities of the engagement. “The historic ties between India and Malaysia have seen steadfast progress in recent years. I look forward to my discussions with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and further enhancing our comprehensive strategic partnership,” he said. “We will aim to deepen our defence and security ties, enhance our economic and innovation partnership, and expand our collaboration into new domains.”

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal underscored the importance of the visit, stating that it carries a “rich agenda and will give a major boost to the special partnership between India and Malaysia”. “The visit is expected to impart significant momentum to our close & multi-faceted partnership,” he added.

This marks PM Narendra Modi’s third visit to Malaysia and his first since the two countries upgraded their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024.

Malaysian PM, Japanese Ministers set to visit New Delhi next week https://artifex.news/article68521477-ece/ Tue, 13 Aug 2024 16:30:52 +0000 https://artifex.news/article68521477-ece/ Read More “Malaysian PM, Japanese Ministers set to visit New Delhi next week” »

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will visit New Delhi next week, in a visit that is expected to strengthen India-Malaysia ties in strategic, trade and defence cooperation, and discuss major developments in Bangladesh, Gaza and Iran as well.

With the Parliament session over, the visit is one of a number upcoming diplomatic outreaches. New Delhi is set to host the India-Japan 2+2 with Foreign and Defence Ministers, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will then travel to Poland and Ukraine.

Mr. Ibrahim’s visit to India from August 19-21 is his first since winning elections and taking over as Prime Minister in 2022. His visit will also attempt to smooth over some of the irritants between previous Malaysian governments and India that led to tensions in ties.

Mr. Ibrahim, seen as a moderate reformer, was in Delhi in 2019 as a member of the previous government of Mahathir Mohamad and president of the ruling party, when he had advocated stronger bilateral ties.

Mr. Mohamad had however raised many issues with India, publicly criticising the Modi government over the changes in Jammu and Kashmir and the crackdown on those protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Mr. Mohamad’s government also refused to hand over Zakir Naik, the preacher wanted in India on charges of terror activities. India cancelled palm oil imports from Malaysia in retaliation.

In 2020, New Delhi’s decision to detain 2,500 foreigners from 45 countries, largely from Malaysia and Indonesia, who had come to Delhi for the “Tablighi Jamaat” conference had also roiled ties. However, with Mr. Ibrahim’s win, the two countries have essayed new ties, including earlier this year, when External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Kuala Lumpur and and hailed Mr. Ibrahim’s “vision” for an ambitious bilateral agenda.

Coinciding with Mr. Ibrahim’s visit, Mr. Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will hold the India-Japan 2+2 talks with their counterparts Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa and Defence Minister Minoru Kihara in Delhi.

The two sides, which last met for the 2+2 in 2022 will discuss India-Japan strategic ties, as well as Indo-Pacific and Quad cooperation on August 20. They are also expected to discuss the situation in Bangladesh, where India and Japan have coordinated closely on several infrastructure projects as part of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s “Future of the Indo-Pacific” strategy.

While a Quad summit in the next few months appears difficult given Mr. Kishida’s own leadership battle within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party at the end of September, and U.S. elections in early November, the 2+2 is expected to discuss the earliest possible dates for India to host the summit.

Meanwhile the government is finalising plans for Mr. Modi’s upcoming visit to Poland and Ukraine, his first since the Russian invasion in 2022, a visit that comes weeks after his visit to Moscow.

Mr. Modi is expected to travel to Warsaw from August 21-22 for bilateral talks with the Polish leadership, and Kyiv on August 23, which is the Ukrainian “Day of the National Flag”. In Kyiv, he will hold talks with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had sharply criticised Mr. Modi’s Moscow trip, and the visit is expected to refute the perception in Ukraine as well as in the U.S. and Europe that India is taking a partisan position on the war.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to Malaysia and his meetings with the country’s top leadership presented an opportunity to reiterate commitment to further develop the bilateral Enhanced Strategic Partnership, an official statement said on March 28.

Mr. Jaishankar was in Kuala Lumpur from March 27 to 28 as part of the last leg of his three-nation tour to Singapore, the Philippines and Malaysia.

He called on Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Bin Ibrahim and thanked him for his support in deepening bilateral ties under the India-Malaysia Enhanced Strategic Partnership, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

Mr. Jaishankar’s visit to Malaysia provided an opportunity to reiterate commitment to further develop the Enhanced Strategic Partnership, it said.

Mr. Anwar gave his commitment to facilitate the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) branch campus in Malaysia, the official Bernama news agency reported.

The Prime Minister also expressed appreciation to his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, for assisting Malaysia when the country was hit by a rice shortage and hoped for further facilitation on importing agricultural produce from India.

“May the Malaysian-Indian relationship continue to grow and blossom for the benefit of the people of both friendly countries,” Mr. Anwar said.

Mr. Jaishankar also held a bilateral meeting with his Malaysian counterpart Mohamad Bin Haji Hasan and held wide-ranging discussions on bilateral cooperation, including political, trade and economic, defence, digital, cultural and education.

The two foreign Ministers also exchanged views on regional and global interest issues, according to the MEA.

Mr. Jaishankar also met the Minister of Digital Gobind Singh Deo.

During his visit, Mr. Jaishankar held a round-table meeting with the CEOs and leaders of the industry. He also interacted with members of the Indian diaspora in Malaysia and praised their contribution towards India-Malaysia ties.

Malaysia is a key partner for India in ASEAN and its Act East Policy, the MEA said.
