Israel’s opposition has pleaded with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resolve the ongoing political crisis to ensure its participation during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the Knesset.

Mr. Modi will undertake a two-day visit to Israel beginning Wednesday (February 25, 2026) to shore up bilateral defence and trade cooperation.

Mr. Modi’s engagements will include his address to Israel’s parliament (Knesset), wide-ranging talks with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu and a meeting with President Isaac Herzog.

Israel’s opposition is demanding that the President of the Supreme Court of Israel, Yitzhak Amit, be invited for Mr. Modi’s address to the parliament, as per protocol, otherwise they will not attend the event.

Speaker says Supreme Court President not invited

Speaker of the Knesset Ohana has made clear that Mr. Amit has not been invited to attend the speech.

“There are 24 hours left until Indian Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the Knesset, and the Prime Minister has yet to do anything to resolve the crisis created by (Speaker) Amir Ohana’s decision to boycott the Supreme Court and the opposition,” Leader of Opposition Yair Lapid posted on his X handle.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu, yesterday you said that this is an important moment for the country and that this is not the time for politics, but for standing together in the face of the challenges”, he wrote.

“Call Ohana, tell him to invite Supreme Court President (Yitzhak) Amit, allow us to come to the event that we need to be at and want to be at, and don’t lend your hand to harming one of the most important alliances of the State of Israel,” he pleaded.

“It is fitting that the world sees us all united during the visit to Israel of a great friend and ally,” Mr. Lapid asserted.

He has been making similar appeals for the past two days amid a standoff between the opposition and the government, as Mr. Modi’s visit has gotten entangled in a domestic political issue.

Earlier, on Monday, Mr. Ohana had said that he would fill vacant seats in the Knesset with former lawmakers.

India and Israel have started the first round of negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) here with an aim to further boost commercial ties and promote investments, an official said.

The four-day talks will end on February 26, the official said.

In November last year, the two countries signed the terms of reference (ToR) to formally start the negotiations for the pact.

In such pacts, two sides significantly reduce or eliminate import duties on maximum number of goods traded between them. Besides, they ease norms to promote trade in services and investments.

The ToR include market access for goods by eliminating tariff and non-tariff barriers, investment facilitation, simplification of customs procedures, increasing cooperation for innovation and technology transfer, and easing norms to promote trade in services.

The ongoing negotiations are important as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Israel on February 25-26.

India and Israel were engaged earlier also to negotiate a similar agreement. Eight rounds were held, but talks stalled later. The last round was held in October 2021. Now both sides have again started the negotiations.

During 2024-25, India’s exports to Israel dipped 52% to $2.14 billion from $4.52 billion in 2023-24. Imports, too, fell 26.2% to $1.48 billion last fiscal year. The bilateral trade stood at $3.62 billion.

India is Israel’s second-largest trading partner in Asia.

Though bilateral merchandise trade is dominated mainly by diamonds, petroleum products, and chemicals, recent years have witnessed an increase in trade in areas such as electronic machinery and high-tech products, communications systems, and medical equipment.

Major exports from India to Israel include pearls and precious stones, automotive diesel, chemical and mineral products, machinery and electrical equipment, plastics, textiles, apparel, base metals and transport equipment, and agricultural products.

Imports include pearls and precious stones, chemical and mineral/fertiliser products, machinery and electrical equipment, petroleum oils, defence, machinery, and transport equipment.

“The FTA will open the doors for greater market access, flow of capital, ..both in goods and services, remove obstacles in doing business, provide clarity and predictability to our economic engagement,” Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal had said in November in Tel Aviv.

In September last year, both countries inked a Bilateral Investment Agreement (BIA), under which India reduced the local remedies exhaustion period for Israeli investors to 3 years from 5 years.

During April 2000 and June 2025, India received USD 337.77 million foreign direct investment (FDI) from Israel.

Israel is a high-income, technology-driven market of under 10 million people.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar in Germany and discussed several important matters, including the situation in West Asia and President Donald Trump’s vision of connecting Asia, Europe, and the U.S. through Israel.

The two leaders met on Saturday on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, a key global forum to discuss security-diplomatic affairs.

“Great to meet FM @gidonsaar of Israel on the sidelines of #MSC2025. Exchanged views on the current situation in West Asia/Middle East. Underlined the strength and significance of our bilateral partnership,” Mr. Jaishankar posted on X.

A statement from the Israeli Foreign Minister’s office said Mr. Saar highlighted the strategic importance Israel places on its relations with India.

They discussed Mr. Trump’s vision of connecting Asia, Europe, and the U.S. through Israel, the statement said.

Mr. Trump in a joint conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday in Washington said that the U.S. and India have agreed to work together to help build “one of the greatest trade routes in all of history.”

“It will run from India to Israel to Italy and onward to the United States, connecting our partners by ports, railways, and undersea cables — many, many undersea cables. It’s a big development,” he said.

He added, “It’s a lot of money going to be spent, and we’ve already spent some, but we’re going to be spending a lot more in order to stay advanced and stay the leader.”

There is an existing project to link infrastructure from India to Europe, through the Middle East. The project was announced at the 2023 G20 Summit in New Delhi.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu then described it as “the largest cooperation project in our history” and as something that will “change the face of the Middle East, Israel, and will affect the entire world.”

Mr. Jaishankar and Mr. Saar also spoke about the challenges posed by attacks on trade routes by the Houthis and Iran, the Israeli statement said.

Houthis have repeatedly launched attacks on ships in the strategic Bab-el-Mandeb area during the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas claiming that they have been targeting ships with Israeli connection.

New Delhi:

The Adani Group Chairman, Gautam Adani, on Monday met the Israeli Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, and his wife Rachel Azar along with other officials, and discussed India-Israel collaboration.

In a post on X social media platform, Gautam Adani said the company remains committed to continuing to invest and expand its partnership with Israel.

“Honoured to meet with Israeli Ambassador H.E. @ReuvenAzar and Mrs Rachel Azar, along with their team. Had productive discussions on doing our part for supporting India-Israel collaboration, particularly regarding India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and defence partnerships,” the Adani Group Chairman posted.

“Through Haifa Port and Adani Israel Ltd, the Adani Group remains firmly committed to continuing to invest and expand our enduring partnership with Israel,” he added.

In 2023, The Adani Group acquired the strategic Israeli port of Haifa for $1.2 billion. The Port of Haifa is the second largest port in Israel in terms of shipping containers and the biggest in shipping tourist cruise ships.

The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is an important initiative that can add to India’s maritime security and faster movement of goods between Europe and Asia.

The IMEC was launched during India’s G20 presidency and aims to integrate India, Europe, and the Middle East through UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel and the European Union.

Lower logistics costs, faster connectivity and secure movement of goods are dependent on better cooperation in this area.

Adani Ports is the largest port developer and operator in India with seven strategically located ports and terminals on the west coast and eight ports and terminals on the east coast, representing 27 per cent of the country’s total port volumes.

The company is also developing a transhipment port at Colombo and Container Terminal 2 at Dar Es Salaam Port in Tanzania.

India has also “strongly condemned” the terror attacks on Israel. (File)

New Delhi:

India on Wednesday reiterated its “strong and unequivocal condemnation” of the October 7 terror attacks on Israel, calling for ceasefire in the region and unconditional, immediate release of all hostages.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri reconveyed India’s stance on the ongoing turmoil during the 17th India-Israel Foreign Office Consultations held in New Delhi where both sides also reflected on the strength of their strategic partnership.

The Israeli side was led by the Director General of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yaakov Blitshtein.

“Both sides discussed various issues of bilateral interest in depth and reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral endeavours. The two sides also shared views on the prevailing situation in West Asia and the Indo-Pacific,” detailed a statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) after the talks.

“Reiterating India’s strong and unequivocal condemnation of the October 7 terror attacks on Israel, the Foreign Secretary called for the unconditional and immediate release of all hostages, ceasefire, the need for continued humanitarian assistance, and adherence to international humanitarian law. At the same time, he also shared India’s concern at the escalating situation in West Asia and emphasised restraint, dialogue, and diplomacy,” it added.

Israel labelled the discussions as “fruitful” and thanked India for its friendship in “challenging times”.

“Satisfied to see common perspectives on challenges and opportunities in both bilateral and regional issues,” Reuven Azar, Israel’s new Ambassador to India, posted on X.

Both sides held discussions on enhancing cooperation on technology, agriculture, transportation, connectivity and many more issues.

India’s long standing policy towards Palestine includes support for a negotiated two-State solution, towards establishment of a sovereign, independent and viable State of Palestine within secure and recognised borders, living side by side in peace with Israel.

At the same time, New Delhi has also “strongly condemned” the terror attacks on Israel and the loss of civilian lives in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, calling for restraint, de-escalation and a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.

Israeli envoy Naor Gilon said the joint security drill marked a significant milestone.

New Delhi:

The Israeli embassy said on Wednesday that it collaborated with Indian security forces in conducting a joint security drill with an objective to counter potential future security threats.

The drill was conducted in Delhi last week.

The exercise witnessed the involvement of various agencies, including the Delhi Police, the National Security Guard and local emergency services, the embassy said.

Israeli envoy Naor Gilon said the joint security drill marked a significant milestone.

“This joint security drill with Indian security forces marks a significant milestone. We extend our gratitude for their efforts,” he said.

“These collaborative exercises strengthen our nations’ cooperation in security and defence and reinforce our shared commitment to global stability. We remain steadfast in our determination to foster continued collaboration for a safer world,” Gilon added.

The embassy said the primary objective of the drill was to assess and synchronise the readiness of the security forces to counter potential future threats effectively.

“Over day and night sessions held at the Israeli embassy in New Delhi, participants practised response strategies to potential terrorist incidents,” it said.

“Elite units from the participating agencies were activated in simulated scenarios, while the Delhi Traffic Police managed traffic control in the vicinity,” it said.

“The exercise served as a platform for both Israeli and Indian forces to refine their coordination, communication and operational procedures, thereby strengthening their joint efforts against terrorism,” the embassy said in a statement.

“We have over 18,000 caregivers and other professionals in Israel,” said MEA spokesperson on March 8

New Delhi:

The first batch of over 60 Indian construction workers is going to Israel, Israeli envoy to India Naor Gilon said on Tuesday.

In a post on X, he hoped that the workers would become ‘ambassadors’ of the great people-to-people relations between the two countries.

He said the workers are going to Israel under the framework of a government-to-government agreement and complimented India’s National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) for the initiative.

“Today we had a farewell event from the first batch of 60+ Indian construction workers going to Israel under the G2G agreement. This is an outcome of hard work of many, including @NSDCINDIA,” Gilon said.

“I’m sure that the workers become ‘ambassadors’ of the great P2P relations between India and Israel,” he said.

There is no official announcement yet on firming up any government-to-government agreement on employment of Indian workers in Israel.

Following the Israel-Hamas conflict, there were media reports that said the Israeli construction industry is looking at recruiting 100,000 Indian workers to replace the 90,000 Palestinians. Last month, India said it is focusing on ensuring the safety and security of all its citizens in Israel in the wake of the death of an Indian in that country in a missile attack reportedly launched by Hezbollah.

“We have over 18,000 caregivers and other professionals in Israel. Their safety and security is of prime concern for us,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said on March 8.

Indian embassy in Israel is doing its best to ensure the safety of all the Indians.

New Delhi:

India on Friday said it is focusing on ensuring the safety and security of all its citizens in Israel following the death of an Indian in that country in a missile attack reportedly launched by Hezbollah.

“We have over 18,000 caregivers and other professionals in Israel. Their safety and security is of prime concern for us,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at his weekly media briefing.

Pat Nibin Maxwell, hailing from Kerala, was killed in the missile attack that hit an orchard at Galilee in northern Israel on March 4.

The missile was reportedly fired from Lebanon by Hezbollah militant outfit in support of Hamas.

After the death of Maxwell, the Indian embassy in Israel issued an advisory urging Indians, especially those working in or visiting border areas in north and south Israel, to relocate to safer areas.

Jaiswal said the Indian embassy in Israel is doing its best to ensure the safety of all the Indians in that country.

“They’ve opened a helpline. We have issued an advisory for their safety and security,” he added.

Referring to the advisory, Jaiswal called on Indians in Israel to exercise caution.

“A helpline is there, if anybody needs help, they can contact the embassy,” he said.

Asked about Israel looking at recruiting Indians to replace Palestinian workers following the Israel-Hamas conflict, Jaiswal said the government-to-government agreement for movement of people is still in the works.

Israel has been continuing its military offensive in Gaza as part of its retaliation to the unprecedented attack on Israeli cities by Hamas on October 7.

Hamas killed around 1,200 people in Israel and kidnapped more than 220 others some of whom were released during a brief ceasefire.

Over 29,000 people have been killed in Gaza in the Israeli offensive, according to the Hamas-run authorities in Gaza.

India has been calling for de-escalation of the situation and creating conditions for an early resumption of direct peace negotiations towards a two-state solution to the Palestine issue.

New Delhi:

India said Thursday it had “always advocated… direct negotiations towards establishing… a sovereign, independent, and viable state of Palestine”. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi also said India is aware of a universal obligation to observe international humanitarian law.

Describing India’s position on the Palestine issue as “longstanding and consistent”, Mr Bagchi had said the government would like to see negotiations leading to a Palestine state “living within secure and recognised borders, side-by-side (and) at peace with Israel. That position remains the same.”

READ | “Always Advocated” Independent Palestine At Peace With Israel, Says India

The government’s comments follow earlier statements offering unequivocal support for Israel and no mention of Palestine, which was criticised by opposition politicians and civil society activists.

In his first remark on the Hamas’ October 7 strike, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared himself “deeply shocked” by the attack, which he swiftly identified as a “terrorist” action.

READ | “Deeply Shocked”: PM Modi After “Terrorists Attacks” On Israel

On Tuesday the Prime Minister spoke to his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, on the phone, and said, “India stands firmly with Israel… strongly and unequivocally condemns terrorism…”

READ | “India Stands Firmly With Israel”: PM Modi To Netanyahu

The two sets of comments are similar, in that both call out the global evil that is terrorism, but the emphasis this week on “a sovereign… and viable state of Palestine” has been seen as a significant opening of India’s position on the war, which broke as Delhi seeks a bigger Middle East role.

It has been seen as a recalibration of stances in light of Israel’s devastating response.

India’s initial response was seen as one dictated by both humanitarian concern for thousands killed or injured in Israel, and by growth of friendly ties under the Modi and Netanyahu governments.

However, as the situation evolves, and if Arab states that have so far been relatively quiet about the assault on Gaza start to speak up, Delhi may find itself in a difficult situation.

It has multiple strategic, economic and cultural interests with the Arab nations. And then there is oil; India imports the bulk of its oil from Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. If this is stopped or reduced (for any reason), increased imports from Russia can offset some but not all.

India also has historically close ties with Palestine; in 1974 India was the first non-Arab state to recognise it as the “legitimate representative” of the Palestinians and, in 1988, as a full State.

Those ties have continued under the Modi government with the late Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj visiting Palestine in 2016 and the then Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas visiting India in 2017.

PM Modi returned Mr Abbas’ visit a year later, when he said India hoped to see an “independent Palestinian state living in an environment of peace”.

In fact, it isn’t just PM Modi’s BJP government that has called for “an independent state”.

In 1977, when the late former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, one of the BJP’s tallest leaders, said that for the Middle East issue to be resolved “Israel must vacate Palestinian land it has illegally occupied”.

That video re-emerged on social media this week as the Israel-Hamas hostilities escalated.

Also, the sum of India’s two responses so far reflects more balanced statements made in May 2021, when violence over a volley of rockets by Hamas and subsequent Israel air strikes left nearly 300 dead.

On that occasion India criticised both sides.

India’s second, and more balanced response, to this round of war between Israel and the Hamas has been seen as significant also because of the domestic political row the conflict triggered.

After a statement defending their right to “live with dignity and respect, the opposition Congress was accused by the BJP of supporting terrorism and being a “hostage to minority vote bank politics”.

Over 1,500 Gazans have been killed in Israeli air strikes so far, ahead of what will be a bloody ground incursion. And, following a “complete siege”, over two million people are without electricity and are low on food, water, medicines and other essentials, raising fears of mass starvation and deaths.

Hamas’ attacks killed over 1,200 people, including civilians, and they took around 150 hostages.

The threat of that ground incursion escalated sharply today after Israel ordered 1.1 million Gazan civilians in the north to move southwards, despite no clarity on any cessation in aerial strikes.
