India suffered yet another batting meltdown in a modest 156-run chase as South Africa rode on skipper Laura Wolvaardt’s sublime unbeaten 92 to clinch a convincing 23-run win and seal the Women’s T20I series 4-1 in dominant fashion.

Wolvaardt, who has already notched up two fifties and a century in the series, struck 11 fours and two sixes in her 56-ball knock, carrying her bat despite wickets falling around her.

The last thing a team needs is to fret over its skipper and vice-captain’s waning returns. Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill’s lack of runs has put India in that predicament.

The 35-year-old has just 201 T20I runs in 2025 at an average of 14.35. The 126.41 strike rate after 17 innings in the year suggests that SKY is struggling to take off like he used to.

Gill’s performance, after replacing Sanju Samson as the Men in Blue’s T20I opener, has been a let-down. The 26-year-old’s 263-run haul after 14 outings (23.9 average, 142.93 strike rate) does not do justice to the trust placed in him.

Gill (four runs) and Suryakumar (17) have not got going in the first two T20Is against South Africa as well.

India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, however, “has got absolute faith” in them returning to form, adding that he wants the duo to shut out the noise and bat positively.

“We are quite far down the road now with our planning [on leadership roles] and how we have set the team up. You should back quality players and quality leaders like that. I can understand from the outside that it looks like a concern, but I have absolute faith in them coming good at the right time,” ten Doeschate said after India’s 51-run loss, its second-biggest in T20Is in terms of runs, in the second T20I at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium on Thursday.

He feels Gill, India’s Test and ODI skipper, should not take the extra pressure of trying to justify his place in the T20I side.

“An element of his Test captaincy [in England] and how much pride he took in that performance carried over into what he wanted to do in the T20 side. So if anything, he was too caring and maybe a little bit too tight. The talks were around relinquishing that responsibility, certainly in that capacity where you feel like it is all about you, and you really need to justify your place in the team. We don’t want him to do that.”

“Surya has been batting really nicely leading into this series… we have high expectations of these players. There has been a fairly long string of form now where he hasn’t got the scores we like. But in isolation, we are certainly not worried about it.”

With eight more T20Is to go before the 2026 World Cup, how long can India afford to look at these numbers in isolation?

When you silence a full house, you must have played out of your skin. South Africa did exactly that — initially through opener Aiden Markram’s sensational hundred and later through Matthew Breetzke and Dewald Brevis. The Proteas’ clinical chase — a four-wicket win with four balls to spare — in the second ODI pulled them level 1-1 at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium on Wednesday.

Chasing a massive 359, South Africa lost opener Quinton de Kock but Markram’s experience and expertise came to the fore as he found an able ally in captain Temba Bavuma. The two were involved in a crucial 101-run second-wicket stand to put the side on course.

Markram (110, 98b, 10×4, 4×6) was in fine form, scoring nearly half his runs in the ‘V’. He made the most of a reprieve in the 18th over when Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped a sitter at long-on off Kuldeep Yadav. Once Markram departed, Breetzke (68, 64b, 5×4) and Brevis (54, 34b, 1×4, 5×6) took calculated risks, their 92-run fourth-wicket alliance turning the tide the visitors’ way. A cool Corbin Bosch (29 n.o., 15b, 4×4) and a composed Keshav Maharaj (10 n.o., 14b) took the team past the finish line.

Earlier, it was the Ruturaj Gaikwad-Virat Kohli show. The former repaid the faith shown in him by smashing his maiden ODI hundred (105, 83b, 12×4, 2×6). Batting at No. 4, Ruturaj produced an innings of quality and authority. Kohli, in sublime touch, scored his second consecutive ODI century — his 53rd hundred in the 50-over format and the 84th (30 in Tests, one in T20Is) of his illustrious career. Kohli (102, 93b, 7×4, 2×6) and Ruturaj’s 195-run third-wicket association was a feast for the full house bathed in blue.

The two had come together after the dismissals of openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal by the 10th over. The former India skipper looked ominous during a brief burst, striking Nandre Burger for three straight fours.

However, the bowler struck in the same over, forcing Rohit to edge behind.

Jaiswal, who grew in confidence after a sedate start, was dismissed by his nemesis Marco Jansen. This was the fourth time Jansen had removed the left-hander (thrice in the two-Test series).

It took just four deliveries for Kohli to assert his dominance as he pulled Lungi Ngidi into the stands over square-leg. Ruturaj, who joined him, was tested with a barrage of short balls. The pair kept the scoreboard ticking at more than a run-a-ball through sharp singles, well-judged twos and the occasional boundary. When the batters shifted gears, more boundaries followed. Ruturaj found the fence regularly before a couple of shots to the deep midwicket region took him to the three-figure mark. He leapt and punched the air in delight to celebrate the big moment. Kohli followed suit, notching up yet another international hundred.

Skipper K.L. Rahul made a quickfire unbeaten 66 off 43 balls (6×4, 2×6) to take India to 358, but couldn’t stop the marauding South Africans.

India’s chances of reaching the World Test Championship finals (WTC) took a major hit as they slipped to the fifth spot in standings following their embarrassing 0-2 series whitewash to South Africa at home.

The 408-run loss in the second Test in Guwahati on Wednesday (November 26, 2025) marked India’s heaviest defeat in terms of runs in the traditional five-day format.

The loss means the team, which had drawn the series against England earlier this year, slipped below Pakistan and are now at the fifth place with their PCT (percentage) dropping to 48.15.

India have played nine Test matches in the current WTC cycle, winning four, losing four, and drawing one game. They will travel to Sri Lanka for a two-match series August next year followed by a rubber against New Zealand in October-November.

On the other hand, South Africa’s first Test series victory in India in 25 years has strengthened the Proteas’ position in the standings.

The defending WTC champions currently occupy the second position, right behind leaders Australia, with 36 points from their four Tests. Their PCT improved from 66.67 to 75.

Inaugural edition champions New Zealand are yet to played a single series in the ongoing cycle while Sri Lanka and Pakistan have played one each.

The top two teams qualify for the final in 2027.

Celebrations erupted across India as fans took to the streets to rejoice in the historic win.

New Delhi:

India’s victory in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa on Saturday not only sparked celebrations across the country but also inspired creative and heartfelt congratulatory messages from various police forces. The team, led by skipper Rohit Sharma and bolstered by Virat Kohli’s match-winning performance, clinched a seven-run victory, marking India’s second world title in the format.

“We all waited 16 years 9 months 5 days (52,70,40,000 seconds) for India to win another #T20WorldCup. Let’s be a little patient at traffic signals too. Good moments are worth the wait. What say? Hearty congratulations, #TeamIndia. #INDvsSA #INDvSA,” the Delhi Police posted.

The UP Police showcased their sense of humour with a tweet that likened the Indian bowlers’ performance to a criminal act – albeit a much-loved one.

“Breaking News: Indian bowlers found guilty of breaking South African hearts. Sentence: Lifelong love from a billion fans! #INDvSAFinal #T20WorldCupFinal,” the UP Police wrote.

Mumbai Traffic Police joined in the celebration by sharing a photo of Rohit Sharma in a car with the number plate reading “IND 29 June 2024”.

“The Dream Come True Number Plate! #UnStoppables #IndVsSA #WorldChampions,” the Mumbai Traffic Police captioned the photo.

The final match was not just about the victory but also about the end of an era. Two of Indian cricket’s all-time greats, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, announced their retirement from T20 Internationals. Mr Kohli, who was adjudged the player of the match for his sublime 76, was the first to declare his decision. Soon after, Rohit announced his retirement, stating that having achieved what he came for, it was time to step aside.

Celebrations erupted across India as fans took to the streets to rejoice in the historic win. In cities like Jammu, Hyderabad, Patna, and Pune, people were seen hugging, dancing, and waving the tricolour. Chants of ‘India, India’ filled the air as millions celebrated the end of a 13-year wait for a world title.

India brought an ICC trophy home after 11 years and India’s first World Cup win since 2011.

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian Cricket Team for bringing the ICC T20 World Cup “home in style”. India beat South Africa in the final by 7 runs. Rohit Sharma and company brought an ICC trophy home after 11 years and India’s first World Cup win since 2011.

“Champions! Our team brings the T20 World Cup home in style! We are proud of the Indian Cricket Team,” Prime Minister Modi posted on X.

In a video message congratulating the team, PM Modi said the team won the World Cup and also the “hearts of crores of Indians”. No small achievement that it did not lose a single match, he said.

“Congratulations to India for this magnificent win. Today, 140 crore countrymen are proud of your fantastic performance. You won the World Cup and also the hearts of crores of Indians. You didn’t lose even one match; that’s not a small feat. You have achieved a spectacular victory. I congratulate you,” the prime minister said in Hindi.

President Droupadi Murmu also congratulated the Indian team and commended their “never-say-die” spirit. “My heartiest congratulations to Team India for winning the T20 World Cup. With the never-say-die spirit, the team sailed through difficult situations and demonstrated outstanding skills throughout the tournament. It was an extraordinary victory in the final match. Well done, Team India! We are proud of you!,” she said in a post on X.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi praised team captain Rohit Sharma’s leadership. “Congratulations to Team India on a spectacular World Cup Victory and a phenomenal performance throughout the tournament! Surya, what a brilliant catch! Rohit, this win is a testament to your leadership. Rahul, I know team India will miss your guidance. The spectacular Men in Blue have made our country proud,” he said.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also shared a message congratulating the team. “What a match! What a catch!”, India ended its 11-year-long ICC trophy drought, winning their first ICC title since the Champions Trophy in 2013. Congratulations Team India. What a match! What a catch!,” he posted on X.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also shared messages congratulating the Men In Blue.

It was India’s second T20 World Cup victory after they had won it in 2007 under the legendary MS Dhoni in South Africa, and first since winning the Champions Trophy in 2013.

Star batter Virat Kohli, who was an upcoming cricketer 17 years ago, made his first fifty of this tournament in the final — a classy 76 off 59 balls with six fours and two sixes that carried India to a competitive 176 for seven.

Then the Indian bowlers, led by Arshdeep Singh (2/20) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/18), worked their magic as they did throughout this tournament, limiting South Africa to 169 for eight to propel India to their second T20 World Cup.

There were pockets of fight from the Proteas, who were playing in their maiden World Cup final.

Heinrich Klaasen threatened India with a 52 off 27 balls (2×4, 5×6) but Hardik Pandya (3/20) snatched the crucial wicket to bring the game decisively in favour of India.
