The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has called for an independent inquiry into the internal procedures that were followed and the personnel that were involved in former head coach Igor Stimac’s contract renewal. Stimac’s contract was terminated on June 17 after AIFF senior officials held a virtual meeting with the Croatian manager. Following the termination of his contract Stimac had filed a claim of $920,000 before the FIFA Football Tribunal.Stimac and AIFF recently agreed to a compensation settlement for terminating the Croatian from the position of head coach.

The Executive Committee of AIFF held a meeting in Hyderabad on Monday. During the meeting, the members discussed the renewal, termination and eventual settlement of claims under the federation’s contract.

The AIFF stated that Stimac’s contract renewal in 2023 left the national body “in a compromised negotiating position.”

“Noting that the former Head Coach had filed a claim of $920,000 before the FIFA Football Tribunal before eventually entering into a full and final settlement with the AIFF, the members called for an independent inquiry into the internal procedures that had been followed and the personnel that were involved when the Head Coach’s contract had been renewed in 2023 on unapproved and unfavourable terms, which eventually left the AIFF in a compromised negotiating position leading to significant financial detriment to the federation in the settlement of the claim,” AIFF said.

“Members also expressed their apprehension as to how a former employee, who no longer holds any positions in Indian football, continues to represent AIFF in various committees of the South Asian Football Federation and Asian Football Confederation and requested the AIFF ExCo to write to these bodies and action be taken to curtail such practices,” AIFF added.

During the meeting, it was also discussed and proposed to have India Under 20 men’s national team participate in the I-League competition.

“With an eye on AFC Asian Cup 2026 and Asian Games 2026 participation, the AIFF is preparing well in advance, having recently assembled an Under 20 squad and will continue to scout talents on ongoing basis. The proposal is mooted with an idea to have India U20 play in the I-League to ensure gaining competitive game time and to maintain match fitness throughout the year, as the I-League endures long season. The India U20 national team will get amnesty from promotion-relegation,” AIFF noted.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Tuesday called for an independent inquiry into former head coach Igor Stimac’s contract renewal procedures after the Croatian and the national body agreed to USD 400,000 compensation settlement for terminating him from the job. During the Annual General Body meeting of the AIFF held here, the members discussed the renewal, termination and eventual settlement of claims under the federation’s contract with Stimac. “The members called for an independent inquiry into the internal procedures that had been followed and the personnel that were involved when the head coach’s contract had been renewed in 2023 on unapproved and unfavourable terms,” the AIFF said.

It noted that Stimac had filed a claim of USD 920,000 before the FIFA Football Tribunal before eventually entering into a full and final settlement with the AIFF.

The AIFF also said that the head coach’s contract renewed in 2023 eventually left the national body “in a compromised negotiating position leading to significant financial detriment to the federation in the settlement of the claim.” The AIFF sacked Stimac in June, terminating his contract exactly a year before it was to expire in the wake of the side’s ouster from the second round of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers despite getting a relatively easy draw.

The sacking was followed by a bitter war of words between Stimac and the AIFF with the Croatian threatening to sue the federation if it didn’t settle his dues within 10 days. However, the two parties have now reached an agreement.

In March, sources in the AIFF had said that the initial contract signed with Stimac had a severance clause (9.1) which provided for three months’ notice period. But the later contract (signed in October 2023) did not have this clause, and this has created problems for the AIFF as far as sacking of Stimac is concerned.

Former AIFF Secretary General Shaji Prabhakaran had claimed that the contract extension signed with Stimac which did not have a severance clause, was “approved” by president Kalyan Chaubey who, however, termed the assertion as a “complete lie”.

Chaubey had told PTI that he was in China (for the Hangzhou Asian Games) when the contract was signed (on October 5, 2023) and he was kept in the dark.

The AIFF, in its AGM on Tuesday, said that the members also “expressed their apprehension as to how a former employee, who no longer holds any positions in Indian football, continues to represent AIFF in various committees of the South Asian Football Federation and Asian Football Confederation”.

The members requested the AIFF Executive Committee “to write to these bodies and action be taken to curtail such practices”.

The unnamed former employee the AIFF was referring to could be Prabhakaran, who was sacked by the AIFF last year.

The AIFF also said that the Indian national team is set to get a permanent address for high-altitude training camps.

“The ExCo members welcomed and accepted the proposal from Arunachal Pradesh Football Association to offer facilities at the newly launched stadium at Tawang, for India national team’s training camps.

“Members felt that Tawang, situated at 10,000 feet from sea level, will be an ideal location for high-altitude camps in future to acclimatize squad according to the international competitions.” Earlier in the day, the Executive Committee of the AIFF discussed and proposed to have India U-20 men’s national team in the I-League competition.

“With an eye on AFC Asian Cup 2026 (2027) and Asian Games 2026 participation, the AIFF is preparing well in advance having recently assembled an Under 20 squad and will continue to scout talents on-going basis.

“The proposal is mooted with an idea to have India U20 play in I-League to ensure gaining competitive gametime and to maintain match fitness throughout the year, as I-League endures long season. The India U20 national team will get amnesty from promotion-relegation.” PTI PDS PDS KHS

It has been a turbulent period for Indian football with Sunil Chhetri hanging his boots from international football and the dismissal of national team coach Igor Stimac resulting in a massive controversy. Chhetri retired from international football following the match against Kuwait and in the very next game, India crashed out of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers following a controversial loss against Qatar. Since the news broke about Chhetri’s decision, both fans and experts have expressed concerns about the possible options who can replace the star striker. In the past year, multiple footballers like Manvir Singh and Sahal Abdul Samad have been used as the striker but no one has truly staked their claim for the position.

However, former Indian football team captain Subrata Paul believes that the management needs to give multiple chances to the young talents and that is the only way to find a proper replacement. Subrata, who recently conducted a goalkeeping workshop for ALPHA Sports Academy in Mumbai, said that Chhetri “was not made in a day” and similarly, it will take time and patience to find the next top striker for India.

“Chhetri was not made in a day. Before him, there was Bhaichung (Bhutia). When Bhaichung left, people were worried but Chhetri stepped up. He became a legend after playing for more than 15 years. He did not become Chhetri in just one year. We need to give other youngsters consistent chances to perform and put our trust in them. We will not be having this conversation five years later because someone will step up to take Chhetri’s position in the national side,” he added.

Meanwhile, Igor Stimac has criticised the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and its president Kalyan Chaubey following his dismissal as the national team coach. Subrata did not comment on Stimac’s allegations and said that he wants to concentrate on what he can do for the sport in India.

“Everybody is entitled to their opinions. We cannot control someone else’s thought process. However, what we can control is what can we do for Indian football. He has said what he feels but I personally believe in work. You will reap what you sow,” he concluded.

Igor Stimac, the former head coach of the Indian football team, has called Indian football “imprisoned” in a scathing attack after his sacking. Stimac was sacked after India failed to qualify for the third round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Now, in a virtual press conference, Stimac has gone all out, throwing a number of accusations at the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the administrators in charge of Indian football. Stimac also revealed his personal health problems suffered during his tenure.

Indian football is ‘imprisoned’

“Your football (Indian football) is imprisoned. It will take a couple of decades for things to improve, which I don’t see happening,” said Stimac.

“My senior players already knew that I had decided to leave, even if we qualified for the third round. It was impossible for me to continue without proper support, full of lies and people who only have private interests,” he added.

“The AIFF’s biggest achievement in the last five years was keeping me quiet,” Stimac said.

Attack on AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey

Stimac lashed out at AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey, stating that they never had a working relationship.

“The president of the AIFF gets pictures clicked with people in important positions for social media. Kalyan (Chaubey) only cares about being popular,” said a fuming Stimac.

“Me and Kalyan never had a relationship. I reported to the secretary general. The president doesn’t indulge,” he added.

“The people in AIFF don’t know how to run a football house. They only care about power,” said Stimac.

“Sooner Kalyan Chaubey leave, Indian football stands a chance,” Stimac said.

Heart surgery

Stimac further revealed that he had to undergo an urgent heart operation due to stress put on him, as the AIFF had given him time till the Asian Cup.

“When I received the final warning on December 2. no one knows this, I finished in the hospital. I was disturbed with everything going on; stressed from the obvious problems. I had an immediate surgery on my heart. I wasn’t ready to speak to anyone or find excuses. I was ready to put myself on the line to prepare my team for the Asian Cup to give the best shot,” Igor Stimac said in the press conference on Friday, June 21.

India’s qualification hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended after a controversial 2-1 defeat to Qatar, where an illegal Qatar goal was allowed to stand by the referee.

AIFF responds

It has come to our attention that former India men’s team head coach Mr. Igor Stimac has made certain remarks in the media pertaining to functioning of the All India Football Federation and some of its senior officials. The AIFF will issue a statement in this regards in the next 48 hours.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has decided to sack Indian football team head coach Igor Stimac after the national side failed to qualify for Round 3 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers. India were defeated 2-1 in their last match against Qatar – a result that meant the national side finished third in their group which also had Kuwait and Afghanistan. The decision came just weeks after Sunil Chhetri retired from international football after playing his final game against Kuwait. According to AIFF press release, the decision was taken after senior officials held a virtual meeting on Sunday.

“The meeting was chaired by AIFF Vice President Mr. NA Haris and the others in attendance were Mr. Menla Ethenpa (Member, Executive Committee and Chairperson, Finance Committee), Mr. Anilkumar Prabhakaran (Member, Executive Committee and Chairperson, Competitions Committee), Mr. IM Vijayan, (Chairman of the AIFF Technical Committee), Mr. Climax Lawrence (Member of the AIFF Technical Committee) and Mr. M. Satyanarayan (Acting Secretary General),” it stated.

“Noting the disappointing outcome of the Senior Men’s National Team’s FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification campaign, the members unanimously agreed that a new Head Coach would be best placed to take the team forward.”

“The meeting instructed the Acting Secretary General Mr. Satyanarayan to notify the current Head Coach Mr. Igor Stimac of its decision to terminate his engagement.”

“Pursuant to the above, a notice of termination has been issued to Mr. Stimac by the AIFF Secretariat, and he stands relieved of his obligations with immediate effect. The AIFF thanks Mr. Stimac for his service to the National Team and wishes him well in his future endeavours,” the statement added.

India lost their game against Qatar 2-1 but the match was not without its fair share of controversies. Qatar’s equaliser came under the scanner when replays showed clearly that the ball crossed the line behind the goal before it was played back to the attacker who scored the goal.

In two week’s time India will play host to Kuwait at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on June 6. Ahead of the highly awaited FIFA World Cup 2026 Preliminary Joint Qualification matchup, team India head coach Igor Stimac has given a positive update regarding the team. Stimac posted a video on X, which showed glimpses of the Blue Tigers’ training camp. “10 days in, players are responding well. Happy to see the senior players making first time campers feel comfortable and sharing their experience with the young boys on a daily basis,” read a post shared by the Croatian on X. India currently sit in second place behind Qatar in group A with 4 points to their name. The Blue Tigers’ only win of the campaign came against Kuwait (1-0) thanks to a late goal by Manvir Singh.

If India are to qualify for the next round of the qualifiers, a win against Kuwait is needed as their final game will be against Qatar, a side which has won all 4 qualifiers so far including a 3-0 victory against India in the first round of fixtures.

The game against Kuwait holds a lot of significance for Indian football as it will also be the last time the fans will get to see their highest ever goal scorer, Sunil Chhetri put on the number 11 shirt and represent the country as it will be his last international game which is sure to fuel some extra motivation through the squad.

The training camp comprises two squads of probables selected by Stimac which included 41 players. Once the camp comes to an end, Stimac will choose the final squad that will travel to play Kuwait and Qatar in the two important matches.

Indian football team coach Igor Stimac once again criticised the lack of preparation time for the side ahead of the Asian Games 2023 after his side was defeated by Saudi Arabia in the Round of 16 stage. The side, led by Sunil Chhetri, went down fighting as Saudi Arabia won the match 0-2 but Stimac believes that the result could have been way worse. There were doubts over India’s participation in the Asian Games followed by tussle with clubs over the availability of certain players. As a result, the team selection took a lot of time and the selected players were unable to practice together before travelling to China.

“Big lesson from this tournament is – Don’t send us anywhere if we can’t get our best players to represent the country. Also, do not send us anywhere if you can provide time for us to work and prepare well. We were here exposed while representing India. We took it well and the Indian fans can be proud of these boys who came here unprepared and without having played a single training session together,” he told RevSportz.

A formidable Saudi Arabia didn’t bring their ‘A’ game to the fore yet were strong enough to ward off a gutsy challenge from India winning their pre-quarterfinal match 2-0 in the men’s football competition.

There was no doubt about Saudi Arabia’s supremacy as forward Mohammed Khalil Marran’s opportunistic twin strikes in the 51st and 57th minute ended Sunil Chhetri-led India’s campaign at the continental event.

However, Igor Stimac’s players can hold their heads high with the kind of performance that they put in despite so much uncertainty and with AIFF sending a second-string side due to the obstinate attitude from the Indian Super League (ISL) organisers who refused to release top players.

After India’s 1-1 draw against Myanmar at the Asian Games 2023 on Sunday, head coach Igor Stimac appreciated the Blues Tigers and said that they made India proud. Stimac took to X and mentioned that the players slept in airports and then completed recovery sessions at a park in China before taking part in the event. In the match against Myanmar, India needed at least a draw to go to the next round of the event.

India head coach Igor Stimac has already put India’s victory over Bangladesh in his memory bank and is focusing on the game ahead. Less than 24 hours ago, India chalked out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bangladesh in the crucial Group A tie of Asian Games football in Hangzhou, China, raising hopes of the Blue Tigers’ entry in the second round after 13 years. Stimac remains deeply engrossed in planning his strategy for India’s next match against Myanmar, to be played on Sunday, September 24, 2023. “I am now thinking about the Myanmar match and we need to make sure we qualify,” Stimac told the-aiff.com from Hangzhou.

“Whether it is a draw or a win, we must qualify. At the same time, I must say that when we hit the pitch, we do it to win,” he added.

Currently, India is placed second in Group A behind China, who have six points. Both India and Myanmar have three points from two matches each, but India are ahead because they scored more goals than Myanmar. Even a draw against Myanmar would suffice for Sunil Chhetri and his men to advance to the second round as the second team from this group.

Stimac was hardly surprised by his team’s victory against Bangladesh. Rather, he feels surprised that some people are surprised by India’s comeback win after the 1-5 defeat against hosts China.

“We went to the match with a positive mindset. We were confident about what we could do and what we should do to win. It happened like that,” he said.

Asked whether the various difficulties the squad faced while going to the Asian Games had any effect on the team, Stimac said, “I never speak about the difficulties we faced before coming here. I always keep the players away from the heat and do not allow them to get influenced by the circumstances. I guide the players in a way that gets us results. I did exactly that here.”

“The players were patient, confident and they followed the instructions. We planned how to reach the attacking third and then put the pressure on. We played with three centre-backs in a 3-4-1-2 formation,” the coach said.

Stimac said that despite all the problems, India was confident about winning against Bangladesh. India’s neighbours have definitely come to Hangzhou after extensive training, but their game style and defensive tactics have not changed much. The Indians were aware of the way they could handle Bangladesh attacks.

“There was no magic involved in it. We won because of the technical points. I gave the boys a clear plan and they followed the guidelines,” was Stimac’s simple analysis of the game.
