The 2023 ODI World Cup in India created an “economic impact” of USD 1.39 billion with tourism among the biggest beneficiaries, according to a report released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday. The Economic Impact Assessment conducted by Nielsen for the ICC, claimed that the mega-event held in October-November last year was the biggest ever ODI World Cup. “The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has demonstrated the significant economic power of cricket, generating economic benefit of USD 1.39 billion (Rs 11,637 crore) for India,” ICC Chief Executive, Geoff Allardice said in a statement.

Australia ended India’s unbeaten run in the tournament to win the trophy for a record-extending sixth time.

“The impact of tourism across the host cities amounted to USD 861.4 million of revenue generation, through accommodation, travel, transportation and food and beverage because of a massive influx of domestic and foreign tourists attending the matches,” read an ICC statement.

“The secondary and incremental spends within the economy was a key driver, generating USD 515.7 million, which was approximately 37 per cent of the total impact.” However, the ICC did not specify whether the massive figure cited in the report is actual revenue.

A record-breaking 1.25 million spectators attended the mega event, of which nearly 75 per cent were attending an ICC 50-over match for the first time ever, the report claimed.

“Nearly 55 per cent of the international respondents had previously visited India regularly, whilst an injection of new visitors thanks to the World Cup saw 19% of international attendees making their first ever visit to the country.

“International travellers visited multiple tourist destinations during their stay which amounted to an economic impact of USD281.2 million and nearly 68 per cent of international attendees said that they would recommend India as a tourist destination to friends and family in the future further enhancing India’s global image,” read the statement from the governing body.

Over 48,000 full and part time jobs were created by the event through direct involvement in delivering the tournament, as well as other organisations across the hospitality sector, added the report.

“The event created thousands of jobs and showcased India as a premier tourist destination, proving that ICC events not only engage fans passionately but also contribute significantly to the economies of our host nations,” Allardice said.

Former Indian head coach and skipper Rahul Dravid opened up on Australian batter Travis Head‘s counter-attacking knock against Men in Blue in the ICC Cricket World Cup final last year, which shattered the country’s dreams of lifting the trophy at home. Speaking at the CEAT Cricket Awards on Wednesday, Dravid said that the Indian bowlers managed to beat Travis’s bat around 15 times, but he did not touch a single ball, highlighting that sometimes, one just needs a bit of luck even though cricket is largely a skill-based game.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Dravid said, “I remember whatever it was, we beat Travis Head’s bat 15 times — he did not touch a single ball. You know, things can go your way sometimes, but you have to stick to the process. I have had time to reflect on it. I have had time to reflect on a lot of things we have done. You do realise, sometimes, you have to do a lot of these things, you have to do the process, you have to do everything right,” said Dravid.

“Sometimes at the end of the day, you need a little bit of luck. Sometimes (it is) the skill, but we needed a guy who could keep his foot within one inch of a line,” he added.

Dravid also lauded the current generation of Indian players for being able to carry forward the legacy of the older stars from the 2000s, by staying dominant across all formats, winning the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, ICC Champions Trophy 2013, ICC T20 World Cup 2024 among many other accomplishments.

“I left in 2011-2012. These players have been able to carry the legacy forward. If you just look at the success that we have had over the last 12 years in all the three formats of the game, the time that after we left, it has been absolutely phenomenal,” said Dravid.

“Very easily, clearly in a lot of the rankings, we are always (No.) 1 or 2… we are always up there with anyone. To be able to go out and win that, just the kind of cricket that we play, the level of skill of some of our players, the way that they approach the game, is great,” concluded Dravid.

The 26th edition of the awards honoured a distinguished group of cricketers and sports leaders who showcased exceptional talent and leadership throughout the year.

Phil Salt was celebrated as the Men’s T20I Batter of the Year, while Tim Southee earned the title of Men’s T20I Bowler of the Year. In recognition of his tactical brilliance, Shreyas Iyer received the Award for Outstanding Leadership for winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Sai Kishore was recognized as the Domestic Cricketer of the Year for his consistent performances on the domestic circuit.

Virat Kohli took home the Men’s ODI Batter of the Year award, and Mohammad Shami was named the Men’s ODI Bowler of the Year.

The Award for Most Matches as a Captain in Women’s T20I History was awarded to Harmanpreet Kaur, while Yashashvi Jaiswal and Ravichandran Ashwin were honoured as the Men’s Test Batter of the Year and Men’s Test Bowler of the Year, respectively. On the women’s side, Deepti Sharma was named the Women’s Indian Bowler of the Year, and Smriti Mandhana earned the title of Women’s Indian Batter of the Year.

The Award for the Fastest Double Century in Women’s Test went to Shafali Verma, while Jay Shah was recognized with the Award for Excellence in Sports Administration for their significant contributions to the sport. For his glorious contribution to the world of cricket, Rahul Dravid was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mumbai, Aug 21 Former India head coach Rahul Dravid on Wednesday said the support staff strived to carry the energetic “team atmosphere” from the ODI World Cup in 2023 to the T20 showpiece, and the approach helped the team to end a barren run in ICC tournaments.

Dravid masterminded India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup in the Americas before signing off from his role as the head coach.

“Honestly, I didn’t want to do anything different. I think we ran a fantastic campaign in the one-day World Cup, Rohit and the team, everyone involved in that one-day World Cup, we ran a superb campaign,” Dravid said at the Ceat Cricket Rating Awards here.

India had suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Australia in the ODI World Cup final at Ahmedabad.

“There’s nothing we could have done more in terms of our preparation, the planning, the execution of what we needed to do for 10 games in a row to dominate, to win the game we did, play the game we did,” said Dravid.

The Bengaluru man said he and the rest of the coaching staff did not want to break the set pattern of a cordial dressing room. “I did not want to change anything. If you’d asked me and we had a discussion with our support staff, we’d get together with the coaches and say, what do you think we should do differently?” “The common consensus (among the team) was we need to do exactly what we did. We need to create the same energy, create the same vibe, the same team atmosphere that we had and then just hope that on the day, we’ll have a little bit of luck,” he said.

Though he did not experience playing in a World Cup in either of the limited-over formats in India, he was able to soak in all the elation as the head coach.

“To travel all over this country and to be able to experience that joy and passion of the fans. I’ve never been a part of a World Cup as a player in India, but just the experience as a coach to go from city to city and just walk and see what this game meant to the people of this country was phenomenal. It was incredible,” he said.

Dravid said Australia were the better team during the ODI World Cup final.

“I thought we ran a phenomenal campaign. We came unstuck in the final and Australia played better cricket than us on the day. They were a better team and congratulations (to them). That can happen in sport and that’s what sport is about,” he said.

The Indian cricket team is currently riding the high of of the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph. Rohit Sharma and his men ended a 11-year drought for an ICC title by beating South Africa in the final. However, few months ago the situation was completely different. India, seemingly invincible till that stage, lost to Australia in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 in Ahmedabad. If the loss was not enough, a couple of months later, former India star Mohammad Kaif said that pitch had been deliberately made slow.

“I was there for three days. Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid inspected the pitch every day for 3 days ahead of the final. They stood beside the pitch for an hour every day. I saw the pitch change its colour. There was no watering the pitch, no grass on the track. India wanted to give Australia a slow track. This is the truth, even if people don’t want to believe it,” Kaif said on Lallantop in an interview.

Now, Viram Rathour, ex-batting coach of the Indian cricket team, who was there for both T20 World Cup 2014 and the ODI World Cup 2023, broke his silence on the issue.

“I’ve heard this story that the pitch was different, which I don’t agree with at all. We played on similar wickets in the earlier matches as well. Matches against Australia, Pakistan and England were also played on slow pitches. The Ahmedabad pitch, however, eased out,” Rathour told Sportstar

It was India captain Rohit Sharma who won the toss and opted to bat first. Australia Pat Cummins, on the other hand, was happy to bowl first, knowing that the pitch is likely to get better as the day progressed.

“The feeling was that Australia had Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc, so India wanted to give a slow pitch, and that was our mistake. Many people say that curators do their own thing and we don’t influence – that is rubbish. When you are moving around the pitch – you have to say just two lines – please don’t put water, just reduce the grass. This happens. That is truth. And it should be done. You are playing at home. And we did it a little too much,” Kaif added.

Arguably the only renowned pace-bowling all-rounder in the Indian team, Hardik Pandya saw his ODI World Cup 2023 participation cut short after an ankle injury saw him sidelined for the most part of the campaign. Though Hardik was informed of a 25-day rehabilitation period, he tried to push himself for a comeback within 5 days and ended up worsening his injury. The all-rounder, now fit for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign with the Mumbai Indians, shared the horror-tale of his World Cup injury that forced him off the field for months.

“I am such a kind of cricketer who doesn’t start 2-3 months before, I start my journey 1 year back for this World Cup, I already planned my routine 1 and half years before and worked accordingly. This was a freak injury very few people know about it my injury got extended and I had to take more time because when I got injured then it was 25 days rehab injury. I was missing the World Cup but I pushed because I had to come back and when I came out I informed team that I will be back in 5 days.

“I got injections done on my ankles at three different places and I had to remove blood from my ankle because it swollen was that much,” Hardik said in a chat with Star Sports.

Hardik pushed himself to the limit, hoping to be available for the team as Rohit Sharma and Co. remained unbeaten until the final of the World Cup. But, his injury re-occurred and forced him off the field for the next three months.

“In a way, I didn’t want to give up and for the team I will give my best. At one point in time, I was aware that if I kept pushing myself I might get injured for a long time. For me that was never the answer I was like if there was one percent chance I could be with the team I would try my best and while I was pushing myself, I had this re-occurrence and my injury became a three-month injury because as I was pushing I was not able to walk but I was trying to run that point of time,” he said.

Hardik, who has always dreamed of winning the World Cup for his team, couldn’t regain full fitness to make a comeback in the showpiece event, and that is a regret he’ll always have.

“I tried to push myself for 10 days, took painkillers and tried to make sure of a comeback as to how can I rejoin the team. For me, the biggest pride is to play for the country and there is never been a bigger pride than playing for the country. This was my baby playing World Cup at home is my child so I wanted to be there for them, nonetheless we win or not, all I wanted to be there for my child and obviously I missed out and that is something that is always going to heavy on my heart,” he said.

Mohammed Shami on Wednesday disclosed that he is recovering well after undergoing an operation on his Achilles tendon, stating his stitches were removed recently. On Tuesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Shami will miss the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 with Gujarat Titans (GT). In an official statement, BCCI stated that Shami is currently monitored by the BCCI medical team after going through surgery on his Achilles tendon in February.

The pacer, who underwent successful surgery on his heel to repair his Achilles tendon last month, took to X (formerly Twitter) to provide an update on his “recovery progress.”

“Hello everyone! I wanted to provide an update on my recovery progress. It has been 15 days since my surgery, and I recently had my stitches removed. I am thankful for the advancements I have achieved and looking forward to the next stage of my healing journey,” he write in X.

In reply to the post, one of the users wrote while he played through pain in World Cup, one particular player faked injury during the World Cup to play in IPL.

“Shami bhai gave his 100 percent even when he was in pain during worldcup, then there is one c***** kalu who shown fake injury to keep himself available for IPL,” the post read. The below screenshot shows a list of posts on X likes by Shami, including the said post.

Shami missed the home T20I series against Australia following the ICC World Cup last year, and he was ruled out of the entire South Africa tour. He also missed the Afghanistan series. Following that, he also missed the five-match Test series against England.

The 33-year-old did not take part in the recently concluded five-match Test series against England. He last represented India in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November. The senior pacer finished as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker and dismissed 24 batters in only 7 matches.

Shami contributed significantly to GT’s success in both seasons. The 33-year-old bowler picked up 20 wickets in 2022 and followed it up with an even stronger performance in IPL 2023, taking 28 wickets at an average of 18.64. Shami was especially devastating with the new ball.

Shreyas Iyer, the talented batter from Mumbai, is in the line of fire after the BCCI fired him, and his Indian cricket teammate Ishan Kishan, from the annual contracts. Shreyas Iyer was part of the national team till very recently in the first two Tests against England. However, he was dropped for the last three Tests after a run of poor scores. Later, he skipped a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai as he claimed he was having a back issue. However, a report in The Indian Express, said the NCA gave a contradictory fitness report on him.

During this time, several media publications have claimed, Shreyas Iyer attended a pre-IPL camp with Kolkata Knight Riders. This seems to have irked the BCCI selectors, who recommend players’ name for central contracts.

According to a report in Revsportz, Iyer went to the KKR Academy to build his workload. “After playing 60 balls in a session, his back was building spasms. He had to build up his resistance. Now he is playing 200 balls per session. In three weeks, he has put on three kilos of muscles. The Mumbai Cricket Association and the Mumbai team head coach (Omkar Salvi) have been kept in the loop. In fact, the Mumbai coach visited the KKR Academy several times to monitor Iyer’s progress. And now he has made himself available for the Ranji Trophy semi-final against Tamil Nadu,” the person said on conditions on anonymity.

“He skipped the IPL to play the World Cup. Even after the surgery, he took three painkiller injections to be pain-free for the World Cup. And yet, the pain returned during the semi-final and the final, and he played through it. Iyer was the only player who wasn’t given a break after the World Cup. He played the home T20I series against Australia and then went to South Africa. After returning from South Africa, he was asked to play a Ranji game in January, ahead of the first two Tests against England. He did that. Doesn’t a player have the liberty to train under a coach of his choice?”

Former Indian cricket team pacer Madan Lal, who was part of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, has praised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for terminating star duo Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer’s central contracts. While the BCCI didn’t reveal the reason behind the decision to axe Kishan and Iyer, reports have claimed that the board was not happy with the players after both decided to skip domestic games for their state teams, despite being cleared fit by the NCA. Lal lauded BCCI over the polarising move, saying that playing domestic cricket should be made compulsory for those who prioritise IPL over First Class matches.

“If the BCCI told them to play first-class cricket, they should have gone and played. No one is bigger than the game. The BCCI should be given the credit as they are making it mandatory to play first-class cricket. Most of the players nowadays are taking First-class cricket for granted because of the IPL. Definitely, the BCCI made a rule that every player should go and play First-class cricket. So if you don’t follow the rules, then they have to take some action and set an example for others,” Lal told Times of India.

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma was pleased with his team’s clinical display with the bat after defeating New Zealand by 190 runs on Wednesday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. Proteas came out on top against close competitors New Zealand, recording their first win over the Blackcaps since 1999 in the men’s World Cup. Bavuma lavished praise on centurions Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen for their clinical display with the bat. To assist the Proteas win their sixth game in seven, De Kock blasted his fourth century of the World Cup, and Van der Dussen also slammed a ton.

South Africa reached 357-4 thanks to innings from De Kock (114) and Van der Dussen (133), who scored his second century. In the final 10 overs, the Proteas added 119 runs to their total as David Miller tormented the New Zealand bowlers with a thirty-ball fifty-three.

“Clinical display with bat. Handled the challenge with the ball nipping around. We applied pressure with the ball. We tried to pounce on bad balls, Quinny started slowly, hung in there and cashed in at the end. More than the score, we were trying to stay in till 30 and go big later on. We were always looking to dominate with the new ball and middle overs. Knew they’d come hard at us and we’d get opportunities,” Bavuma said in a post-match presentation.

Throughout the competition, Proteas fired a warning shot with five totals above 300, including more than 400 against Sri Lanka.

Gotta hear the permutations about making the semi. After tomorrow, it’s back to business, gotta prepare for the next game,” he added.

South Africa was bolstered by Marco Jansen’s twin wicket in the opening powerplay and Kagiso Rabada and Gerald Coetzee then claimed wickets of their own. Keshav Maharaj struck in his opening over and removed the reliable Daryl Mitchell, finishing with a figure of 4-46, ensuring the spinners had their say.

South Africa moved to the top of the World Cup 2023 points table with a thumping 190-run victory in Pune. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s NRR took a big hit as they slid below Australia into fourth.

New Zealand skipper Tom Latham on Wednesday rued the series of injuries which has left the Black Caps in a difficult position as the World Cup enters the business end. New Zealand slumped to their third consecutive defeat as South Africa handed them a massive 190-run loss here on Wednesday. To add to their woes as many as five players, including regular skipper Kane Williamson (thumb), are battling injuries, leaving them with only 10 fit players in their squad of 15.

“We have faced adversities with injuries. We will reflect on this one quickly and move to the next one, we don’t become a bad team overnight,” Latham said after the game.

Matt Henry and James Neesham suffered injuries on Wednesday with the former hurting is hamstring. He will undergo scans on Thursday.

Neesham, on the other hand, suffered a blow on the his right wrist during his follow through, but came out to bat.

Lockie Ferguson (achilles) and Mark Chapman (calf) are also nursing injuries.

New Zealand failed with the bat and ball against the Proteas. While the bowlers gave away 357 runs, the entire team was bowled out for 167.

“Not our best performance. We were under pressure after that partnership (between Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen). It was a big score. From the batting point of view, we had to have those partnerships, but we had our back against the wall. Those two played fantastically well.

“It was a small ground and a good surface, but we couldn’t do much in those first 10 overs. I think they put themselves in a great position, we were not able to build partnerships, that was disappointing.” Meanwhile, South Africa marched to the top of the table with their fourth win on the trot and skipper Temba Bavuma was chuffed about his team’s performance.

“Clinical display with bat. Handled the challenge with the ball nipping around. We applied pressure with the ball. We tried to pounce on bad balls, Quinny started slowly, hung in there and cashed in at the end.

The unease in his voice was palpable as India skipper Rohit Sharma on Wednesday expressed deep concern about the vitiated air quality in Indian cities, saying the current situation is not ideal and it is important that future generations “get to live without fear”. As is the scenario every winter, a deadly mix of fog and smoke has adversely affected Mumbai and Delhi — the cities hosting World Cup matches. There are several factors contributing to the worsening air quality and BCCI swinging to action has announced that it won’t allow display of fireworks during the remaining World Cup games in Delhi and Mumbai.

“In an ideal world you do not want a situation like this but I am pretty sure that the concerned people are taking the necessary steps to avoid this kind of situation. It is not ideal and everyone knows that,” Rohit said on the eve of the match against Sri Lanka in the financial capital of the country.

Rohit, who has a five-year-old daughter, said the future generations deserve a clean environment.

“Looking at our future generations, your kids, my kid. Obviously it is important that they get to live without any fear. Every time I get to speak outside of cricket, or not discussing cricket I always talk about this. We have to look after our future generations,” the captain said.

Delhi’s air quality remained in the “very poor” category for the fifth consecutive day on Wednesday with an air quality index (AQI) of 372.

The pollution situation has been alarming in Mumbai as well.

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday expressed concern over the “deteriorating” air quality index in Mumbai while taking suo motu (on its own) cognisance of the issue.

Sri Lanka are scheduled to travel to Delhi for their match against Bangladesh on November 6, while Mumbai will host two more league games, on November 2 and November 7, and the semifinal on November 15. In 2017, the Sri Lankan players were forced to wear masks while on field in New Delhi during the third match of the Test series. The then Lankan skipper Dinesh Chandimal had expressed concern and said his players were not comfortable on the field.

The Indian cricket Board has said that it is “sensitive to environmental concerns.” “I took up the matter formally with the ICC and there won’t be any fireworks display in Mumbai, which can add to the pollution level,” said BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a statement.

“The Board is committed to combating environmental issues and will always place the interest of our fans and stakeholders at the forefront. The BCCI acknowledges the urgent concern surrounding air quality in both Mumbai and New Delhi.

“While we strive to host the ICC World Cup in a manner befitting the celebration of cricket, we remain steadfast in our commitment to prioritising the health and safety of all our stakeholders.”
