The Lucknow Super Giants had one forgettable night in the IPL on Wednesday. They got thrashed by 10 wickets as SunRisers Hyderabad batters Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma launched a never-seen-before attack. They chased down a target of 166 in just 58 balls. This was the fastest successful chase for any 100+ target in the IPL. Head finished on 89* off 30 balls with a strike-rate of 296.67 while Sharma finished on 75*  in 28 balls with a strike-rate of 267.86. Compared to them, there was another senior batter in the rival camp, who looked quite subdued.

The veteran India batter, who was not picked for the T20 World Cup 2024, scored 29 off 33 balls. In the IPL 2024, KL Rahul has scored 460 in 12 matches at an average of  38.33.

In a discussion on ESPN Cricinfo, after the SRH vs LSG game, former West Indies pacer Ian Bishop suggested Rahul to play with more freedom.

“It is just loosening the shackles of your mind, really being prepared. I think he has to be prepared to say well, we may lose a couple of games, we may get rolled over as Pat Cummins has said. But if you have the resources and that’s the other thing, you have got to have the resources to play that way,” Ian Bishop said.

“You have to select well and just be brave because that’s the way the game has gone on most occasions. There are times at the Wankhede the other night, you will have a pitch that demands a little bit more circumspection for example. But generally the way the game has gone in this IPL, you have got to be able to play freely, have the resources to go there and play freely.”

Former Mumbai Indians pacer Mitchell McClenaghan, was also part of that discussion, and he said: “I think if this doesn’t wake KL up to the style of cricket he needs to play going forward to be successful and to continue to play for India, you know I don’t know what will.”

“Absolutely he can do it. I think he is got to get past, very similar to what we have seen with Virat (Kohli) you know like how you are the only person who can score runs and he’s got to go right I need to score runs and if I am going to miss out, it is okay, trust the other guys to do the job. That’s what it looks like, it looks like he is carrying the whole team on his back, thinking that if he doesn’t bat the innings, you are not going to get a score, and if he does get out, they are long way behind where they need be.”

“It is going to take a really good coaching structural management to give him the message that we are not going to drop you, even a message from the top. I don’t see any harm in Dravid (Rahul), Rohit (Sharma) and the likes actually saying we are not going to drop you if you have this intent all the time. If they can unlock that, he is one of the best players going around and he will bounce back from this,” he added.

“Praise Gautam Gambhir For KKR Win, Blame Shreyas Iyer”: West Indies Legend Slams Double Standards https://artifex.news/praise-for-gautam-gambhir-blame-for-shreyas-iyer-west-indies-legend-slams-double-standards-at-kkr-5600003/ Tue, 07 May 2024 03:27:04 +0000 https://artifex.news/praise-for-gautam-gambhir-blame-for-shreyas-iyer-west-indies-legend-slams-double-standards-at-kkr-5600003/ Read More ““Praise Gautam Gambhir For KKR Win, Blame Shreyas Iyer”: West Indies Legend Slams Double Standards” »

Former West Indies cricketer Ian Bishop slammed trolls for targetting Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Shreyas Iyer. Despite KKR sitting top of the table, Iyer has been on the receiving end of some harsh criticism on social media from fans, who have instead credited mentor and former captain Gautam Gambhir for the franchise’s stunning form this season. Taking to X, Bishop shut down multiple trolls and questioned fans for showing double standards by attributing KKR’s wins to Gambhir and defeats to Iyer.

While Gambhir has certainly brought the winning mentality back at KKR, Bishop highlighted Iyer’s respectable record as captain during the previous seasons.

“Shreyas became DC captain in 2018 when GG stepped down after DC lost 5 of first 6 gms. DC then finished the season winning 4 of next 8 games. 2019 DC 3rd, 2020 DC 2nd. 2021 injury & only 8gms so Pant captained. To KKR 2022, new franchise, 7th. Missed 2023. 2024,” Bishop responded to fan on his post.

Questioned the double standards, Bishop argued saying: “So GG gets the praise when they win. Shreyas gets the blame if they lose? Or will you say its GG’s fault to if they lose?”

Since returning to the franchise as a mentor, Gambhir has been pretty active in the dugout, passing on tactical aide to Iyer during timeouts and breaks.

Speaking at the press conference on Sunday, KKR pacer Harshit Rana also credit Gambhir for his tactical brilliance.

On Sunday, red-hot Sunil Narine smashed 81 off 39 balls to help KKR thrash Lucknow Super Giants by 98 runs and take top spot in IPL table.

Narine’s blitz, laced with six fours and seven sixes, guided Kolkata to 235-6 after they were invited to bat first in Lucknow’s final home game.

Two-time champions Kolkata bowled out Lucknow for 137 in 16.1 overs for their eighth win in 11 matches and almost guaranteed a play-off berth. Second-placed Rajasthan Royals have played one match fewer.

The top four teams will make the play-offs with the final on May 26 in Chennai.

“PhD For Professor Jasprit Bumrah”: Ian Bishop’s Worldly Praise For Mumbai Indians Star https://artifex.news/phd-for-professor-jasprit-bumrah-ian-bishops-worldly-praise-for-mumbai-indians-star-5474704/ Sat, 20 Apr 2024 09:42:09 +0000 https://artifex.news/phd-for-professor-jasprit-bumrah-ian-bishops-worldly-praise-for-mumbai-indians-star-5474704/ Read More ““PhD For Professor Jasprit Bumrah”: Ian Bishop’s Worldly Praise For Mumbai Indians Star” »

The ‘Wizard of Ahmedabad’ Jasprit Bumrah turned out to be the difference-maker for Mumbai Indians again as the Hardik Pandya-led franchise defeated Punjab Kings by 9 runs in an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match on Thursday. Bumrah’s figures of 3 for 21 in 4 overs proved crucial to MI’s triumph as PBK nearly pulled off a heroic chase, courtesy of rookies Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh. After Bumrah was named the Player of the Match, West Indies legend Ian Bishop shared an out-of-this-world praise for the marquee pacer.

Bishop, in his post, asked for PhD to be given to Bumrah for his fast bowling. He also gave him the nickname ‘professor’.

“If I could anoint Jasprit Bumrah with a fast bowling PHD, I would. He is a terrific communicator, Knowledgable & articulate. I’d then have him hold bowling lectures to young for aspiring seam bowlers across the country at all levels. I wouldn’t wait until he retired. #professor,” Bishop posted on X (formerly Twitter).

It was a close win for Mumbai, admitted Bumrah after the game, even though the 193-run target looked untouchable early in the game.

“This was a close game. Much closer than what we thought it would go. Of course you want to make an impact when the ball does something. In this format the ball swings two overs. When I want to bowl more, I play Test cricket. That fulfills my desires. This format is a little difficult for bowlers, with time restrictions and impact player rules. Batting lineup becomes deeper and deeper. But that’s not in your control. I do relay the message to the bowlers whenever I can. But you also don’t want to deliver too many messages in the heat of the moment,” Bumrah had said after the game.

Kolkata Knight Riders’ star pacer Mitchell Starc is having a forgettable Indian Premier League season. The left-arm pacer saw KKR breaking the bank to secure his services ahead of IPL 2024. It was a record sum of Rs 24.75 crore that KKR paid at the auction war to bag Starc. While the price grabbed a lot of eyeballs, Starc failed to live up to the expectations in the first six matches for KKR in IPL 2024. KKR’s match against Rajasthan Royals in Tuesday night at Eden Gardens was no different for Starc as he conceded 50 runs in his four overs without taking any wicket.

Starc has taken only five wickets in the first six matches of IPL 2024 while conceding at an economy of 10.54. In four of the six games, Starc has remained wicketless.

Former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop has criticised the pacer for failing to deliver as per the expectations.

“I would assume that Mitchell Starc, especially at that price, hasn’t really hit the nail on its head. He got three wickets last game but tonight (Tuesday) again he would have been hoping to step up. There was this one over, where he was going wide, wide, wide. When you need sixes, I think it’s a good plan. Then you talk about backing yourself – of course there was that five wides, and the short ball which he got hooked for when there was nobody at square, instead of sticking with the wides and make Buttler hit the ball over that side. So yeah, like I said… it’s the little things,” Bishop said on ESPNcricinfo.

Meanwhile, ex-New Zealand star Mitchell McClenaghan, who holds the experience of playing for Mumbai Indians in IPL, felt that Starc is trying to adapt to defensive style of bowling on Indian tracks.

“Two overs in a row, we are talking about the first ball. He has tried to bowl the slower ball, and I think he was trying to bowl a wide slower ball. When you are bowling on these pressure situations, that first ball goes out of the park. And that is a good momentum-starter for the batter. And it not only creates chaos in your mind, but also in the captain’s mind. He is also learning because the game is changing. IPL is a different beast as compared to international cricket. The grounds are so much smaller. Even mishits go for six. I think he is learning to bowl a lot more defensively on Indian grounds,” said McClenaghan.

Sri Lanka made a light work of Bangladesh in the second match of the Asia Cup on Thursday following a strong performance from their bowlers at the Pallekele Stadium in Kandy. Chennai Super Kings duo Matheesha Pathirana and Maheesh Theekshana did the damage with the ball as Sri Lanka restricted Bangladesh for 164. Pathirana returned figures of 4/32, drawing praise from West Indies legend Ian Bishop, who pointed out why CSK and their captain MS Dhoni rate the young pacer highly.

Bishop suggested that Pathirana is still learning his trade, and is likely to get better with experience.

“Easy to see why Sri Lanka cricket, CSK and MS Dhoni are valuing Matheesha Pathirana so highly. He is still learning his craft. But he is learning quickly and will be a real handful in years to come,” Bishop posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Speaking of the match, Najmul Hossain Shanto made 89 to play a lone hand in Bangladesh’s innings.

Chasing a target of 165, Sadeera Samarawickrama, who made 54, and Charith Asalanka, unbeaten on 62, guided the chase in their key stand of 78 after Sri Lanka lost their openers early and slipped to 43-3.

Pathirana, who has been often compared to Sri Lanka great Lasith Malinga, was named man of the match and said, “my bowling is different so a little unpredictable.”

Sri Lanka, who won the T20 edition of the tournament in Dubai last year, are co-hosting with Pakistan and will next play Afghanistan at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore

Bangladesh, on the other hand, face Afghanistan on Sunday, also in Lahore.
