Rains lashed parts of Hyderabad in the evening rush hours on Tuesday (September 22, 2026), catching people off guard. The weather was sunny till the late afternoon. As it started to rain and thunders echoed, people and motorists rushed to find shelter. 

India Meteorological Department (IMD)-Hyderabad Centre issued a weather update at 5.08 p.m. predicting light to moderate rain or thundershowers with surface wind speed reaching up to 40 kmph as very likely in parts of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation during the next one to two hours. 

In view of the rains in the city, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy directed officials to take measures to prevent water logging on arterial roads, junctions, colonies, and send teams to attend to such situations. They were instructed to focus on low-lying and flood prone areas, ensure water flows in nalas and drainage lines without obstruction and there are no interruptions in electricity supply and flow of traffic.

A bright and sunny day gave way to dark skies and rain in several parts of Hyderabad on Wednesday (August 5, 2026), as clouds gathered during the afternoon following a largely clear start to the day.

After 3 p.m., rain was reported from several areas, including Nacharam, Mallapur, ECIL and A.S. Rao Nagar, among other parts of the city.

According to data from Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), as of 4 p.m., Chintal recorded 9.8 mm rainfall followed by 9.3 mm in Allwyn Colony, 8.5 mm in Anandbagh, 7.8 mm in Malkajgiri, 7 mm in Nacharam, 6.8 mm in Ghatkesar, 6.5 mm in Tarnaka and 6.3 mm in Uppal.

The Cyberabad Traffic Police on Wednesday (July 29, 2026) issued an advisory requesting companies and organisations across the commissionerate to implement staggered early logouts from 3.30 p.m. in view of the forecast of moderate to heavy rainfall.

The advisory, issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-I), said the measure was aimed at ensuring public safety, reducing the risk of severe traffic congestion and facilitating uninterrupted emergency services during adverse weather conditions.

Companies were requested to inform the Cyberabad Traffic Police of their office locations and proposed early logout timings to enable appropriate traffic management arrangements.

The police said the staggered dispersal of employees would help reduce pressure on the road network and minimise travel-related risks during the expected rainfall.

According to IMDs latest bulletin, heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places in Adilabad, Kumaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu and Bhadradri Kothagudem districts. Additionally, strong surface winds are very likely to prevail at isolated places in all 33 districts of the State.

For the second consecutive day, several parts of Hyderabad witnessed rain on Tuesday with evening showers leading to waterlogging at a few locations and slow-moving traffic at several key junctions across the city. The rainfall followed a widespread overnight spell that had drenched Hyderabad between July 20 evening and the early hours of July 21, bringing down temperatures and providing relief from the prevailing warm and humid conditions.

On Tuesday, rain commenced around 5 p.m. and continued until nearly 8 p.m., affecting several parts of the city, including Necklace Road, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Secunderabad, Mettuguda, Tarnaka, Mehdipatnam, Golconda and surrounding localities.

Heavy rainfall was recorded in many Telangana districts. According to Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) data, Nandigama in Rangareddy recorded the highest rainfall of 57.5 mm followed by 32.5 in Nagupalle (Bhadradri Kothagudem), 28.8 mm in Andugulapet (Mancherial), 26.5 mm in Sonala (Adilabad), 23.5 mm in Ghattu (Jogulamba Gadwal), 22.8 mm in Madanpalle (Vikarabad) and 21.8 mm in Edbid (Nirmal).

TGDPS data showed that as of 9 p.m, Golconda recorded rainfall of 11.8 mm followed by 11.5 mm in Mehdipatnam, 10.8 mm in Banjara Hills, 10.5 mm in Sivarampally, 10.3 mm in Goshamahal, 9.8 mm in Kavadiguda, 9.5 mm in Amberpet, 9.5 mm in Khairatabad, 9 mm in Tarnaka and 7.5 mm in Jubilee Hills.

A 44-year-old man and his 16-year-old daughter were electrocuted in Secunderabad in the early hours of Saturday (June 13, 2026) after they stepped out of their home to move their car away from a tree that had fallen during heavy rain.

The deceased were identified as Ch. Sandeep, a manager at Sai Sree Foods in Balanagar, and his daughter Ritika, an intermediate second-year student. The incident was reported around 2.45 a.m. in Telecom Colony, Alwal.

According to police, a tree collapsed in front of the family’s house amid heavy rain. Sandeep, his wife Swetha and their daughter came out of the house to move their car away from the fallen tree.

While doing so, Swetha noticed an electric wire hanging on the road and attempted to move it away from the vehicle. She received an electric shock and fell to the ground. As Sandeep got out of the car to help, another live wire fell on Ritika, electrocuting her.

Police said Sandeep then rushed to rescue his daughter but was also electrocuted. Swetha, who sustained a comparatively mild shock, managed to move away from the spot.

An ambulance was rushed to the scene, but emergency personnel declared Sandeep and Ritika dead.

This is the second fatal electrocution in the week linked to the heavy rains in Hyderabad. On Tuesday (June 9, 2026), two men died after being electrocuted in Bandlaguda following a sudden downpour in the city.

A case has been booked by the Alwal police and further investigation is underway.

As employees streamed out of offices across Hyderabad’s IT corridor on Tuesday (June 9, 2026) evening, the roads around T-Hub, Durgam Cheruvu cable bridge, Raidurg and Hitech City presented a scene more commonly associated with the peak monsoon months. Long queues of vehicles stretched into the distance, their red brake lights reflecting off rain-soaked roads. But beneath the sea of red tail lights was another familiar monsoon image that residents of Cyberabad know all too well: roads disappearing under stagnant water.

An hour of intense rainfall between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. was enough to inundate several stretches across the newly formed Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) limits, triggering waterlogging and bringing traffic to a near standstill in parts of the IT corridor.

Rainfall amount

According to the CMC, in one hour, Miyapur received the highest rainfall during the hour at 53.3 mm, followed by Kukatpally with 52 mm, Hafeezpet with 47.5 mm, KPHB Colony with 46 mm, Shaikpet with 44.3 mm, Khajaguda with 43.3 mm, Raidurg with 30.8 mm and Madhapur with 27.5 mm.

The sudden downpour led to widespread water accumulation across several parts of the Cyberabad region. Areas including Kondapur, Madhapur and Hafeezpet witnessed significant waterlogging, with multiple cars and two-wheelers left partially submerged. Videos circulating on social media showed motorists struggling through inundated roads, while stranded vehicles were seen marooned in stagnant water at several junctions.

Monsoon preparedness announced on June 1

The disruptions were observed after Cyberabad civic authorities announced monsoon preparedness measures on June 1. Ahead of the rainy season, the Corporation had identified vulnerable locations, deployed monsoon emergency teams and held coordination meetings with the Cyberabad Police and Traffic Police to ensure prompt response to waterlogging and minimise traffic disruptions during heavy rain.

Field visit on June 10

On Wednesday morning, CMC Commissioner G. Srijana, along with zonal commissioners, deputy commissioners, engineering officials and monsoon emergency teams, reviewed the situation and inspected affected areas. In coordination with the Cyberabad Law and Order Police and Traffic Police, field teams monitored vulnerable locations, regulated traffic movement and attended to water stagnation points on priority. The rain on Tuesday provided the first major test for those arrangements. 

“It was no small rain. Whatever theory we had spoken about during the preparedness meeting, we had a reality check yesterday,” said Ms Srijana while also confirming that the rainfall had exposed additional waterlogging hotspots that had not been identified earlier.
