Overnight non-stop rains across Hyderabad and several parts of Telangana brought much-needed relief from the scorching heatwave conditions that had gripped the State over the past week.

The rains began in Hyderabad after 10 p.m. on Tuesday (May 26, 2026) as dark clouds covered the sky and several parts of the city witnessed lightning and thunders. About an hour later, light showers started in many areas and continued steadily through the night. Though the rainfall was not very heavy in most parts of the city, the continuous showers helped bring down temperatures and provided relief to residents who had been enduring intense daytime heat. Many parts of the city remained cloudy on Wednesday (May 27, 2026) morning.

A 27-year-old man heading home from work was swept away in the accumulated floodwaters at the Balkampet underpass following heavy rains that lashed Hyderabad on Wednesday (September 17, 2025) night. He was rushing towards his home in Musheerabad from his office in Balnagar, said an officer from the SR Nagar police.

The victim, identified as Mohammad Sharfuddin, a resident of Musheerabad, was riding his two-wheeler towards Begumpet when the force of gushing water knocked him down and carried him away around 11 p.m.

According to police, Sharfuddin was employed at a food manufacturing plant in Balanagar. He is survived by his wife and young daughter.

SR Nagar Inspector T. Srinath Reddy said it was his regular route home and he was aware of the recurring waterlogging. “He had left his office in a hurry to attend a function near his home in Musheerabad when the incident occurred,” said the officer.

The Inspector added that the body was recovered from the same area and was shifted to Gandhi Hospital for postmortem examination.
