From being a hapless victim of a sting operation at the start of his career to becoming an Olympic medallist, Indian men’s hockey team striker Lalit Upadhyay has worked hard to rebuild his career and considers all the setbacks as blessings in disguise. At the the age of 17 in 2008, Lalit’s fledging career came to a sudden halt when he was embroiled in an unnecessary scandal for no fault of his. Posing as an agent, a reporter from a TV channel offered then Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) secretary K Jothikumaran a sponsorship deal only if a player of their choice was taken into the Indian team, and Lalit’s name was taken as a bait.

Lalit was unaware of such a ‘deal’ and shaken by the incident, he almost quit hockey.

“If this happens to any boy who is immature and has come into the team with big dreams, he would be shattered. We had only heard about India winning eight Olympic medals but had not seen it happen in front of us. It was a dream to play in the Olympics and win a medal,” Lalit told PTI Bhasha.

“But in a way it was a blessing in disguise for me. When I faced all this in the beginning, I became mentally stronger. Although I have forgotten that incident, whenever I remember it, I feel stronger.

“Now the circumstances have changed a lot, social media has also come, so it will not happen with anyone. I consider myself lucky that I have left that behind and now going to play in the Olympics for the second time. Whenever I wear this jersey, I get inspired to do something special,” said the 30-year-old forward, who was a vital member of India’s bronze medal-winning side in Tokyo.

An Olympic bronze and Asian Games gold already in his kitty, Lalit is now focused on changing the colour of the medal in Paris Games, starting July 26.

“We know that expectations are high because we won an Olympic medal after a long time in Tokyo. We are confident that the colour of the medal will be changed,” said Lalit, who has scored 45 goals in 168 international appearances.

“We have worked hard on fitness in the last four years, which is visible on the field. In fitness, we are at par with the top teams in the world. The fitness level of seniors along with young players have improved tremendously.” But it won’t be easy in Paris as India are placed in a tough Pool B along side New Zealand, reigning champions Belgium, mighty Australia, Argentina and Ireland.

India will open their campaign against New Zealand on July 27.

“It’s irrelevant to focus on the pool because all teams come with full preparation to give their best. We will focus on one match at a time and try to give our best in every match,” said Lalit.

Lalit is optimistic about India’s chances, saying in modern day hockey the gap is very narrow between top teams of the world.

“Hockey is always changing and all the teams keep updating themselves. Our training program is also prepared keeping this in mind. We recently played the FIH Pro League and we practice keeping in mind top teams like Australia, Germany and Belgium,” he said.

“This time there have been a lot of field goals in the Pro League and the focus is on creating opportunities inside the D. As forwards, we try to score field goals or produce penalty corners which is very important in modern hockey,” added Lalit.

India have retained 11 players from Tokyo while five will make their Olympic debut in Paris. “These boys (young players) have won gold medal in the Asian Games and overcame the pressure to qualify for the Olympics, so they are capable of handling pressure. We have been playing with them for a long time and the coordination is good. We keep talking to each other and share our experiences,” said Lalit, who hails from Varanasi.

Lalit described mutual respect, bonding and unity as major strengths of the current team.

“During COVID we all stayed together for a long time at the SAI centre in Bengaluru, which gave us more opportunities to get to know each other. This strengthened the team bonding and helped us immensely to give Indian hockey a new lease of life by breaking the jinx in Tokyo.” The ancient city of Varanasi has given Indian hockey legends like late Mohammed Shahid, who has an indelible impact on Lalit’s life and career.

“There is a saying in our Banaras (Varanasi) that everything starts from here and ends here. When we also sit on the banks of Ganga, at one side there is Dashashwamedh Ghat (Ganga arti ghat) and on the other side there is Manikarnika Ghat (cremation ghat). We pray at one ghat and on the other one we pray for peace of departing souls,” he said.

“That’s why I am satisfied with whatever God has given me. I just hope this legacy of hockey remains intact and the flag of Indian hockey keeps flying high.”

Indian men’s hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh is desperate to reclaim the gold medal in the upcoming Paris Olympics in his bid to give a fitting tribute to the country and stalwarts of the game. Eight-time Olympic champions India won an Olympic medal, a bronze, after 41 years in the Tokyo Olympics to revive the golden days of the sport in the country, and come 2024 Paris, the Harmanpreet-led side is chasing nothing less than a gold.

“We are giving our all to elevate our history and legacy. Winning the gold will be a tribute to India and our seniors,” the ace drag-flicker said in an exclusive feature on JioCinema’s ‘The Dreamers.’ Harmanpreet’s predecessor Manpreet Singh, under whose leadership India bagged the historic bronze in Tokyo, echoed similar sentiments.

“Seeing our flag on the right, I felt we could strive harder to place it at the centre next time, with our anthem playing. This marks the beginning of our renewed journey,” he said.

Veteran India goalkeeper PR Sreejesh highlighted the relentless drive and collective spirit of the team.

“Someone somewhere is training to beat you. That thought pushes me out of my comfort zone. Every time I train, I am driven by the desire not to disappoint the 1.4 billion people of our country.

“There was a time when Indian hockey relied on individual brilliance, but now we play as a cohesive unit, and that transformation has been key to our success on the international stage,” Sreejesh said.

India’s chief coach Craig Fulton broke down the team’s mentality, philosophy, and strategy, which helps them go toe-to-toe with some of the best sides in the world. “There isn’t a team that this Indian team hasn’t beaten. The question you could also be asking is — what do the other teams have to do to beat India? “The whole philosophy in my mind is to defend, to counter, and to win – having a team that can defend against the best teams in the world but then counterattack from anywhere. And that’s in the DNA of this Indian team,” the South African said.

An inconsistent Indian men’s hockey team lost 1-3 to hosts Great Britain in its second match of the London leg of the FIH Pro League here on Sunday, a day after the Harmanpreet-led side stun world champions Germany 3-0. Bandurak Nicholas scored a brace (2nd and 11th minute), both field goals, while Calnan Will struck the other goal for GBR in the 47th minute. Abhishek was the lone goal-scorer for India as he struck from a field effort in the 35th minute. India earned eight penalty corners but could not score any goal from them. GBR too couldn’t convert any of their five PCs.

India are ranked third in FIH chart, a rung above Britain.

Backed by a boisterous home crowd, Britain came up with a high-voltage performance backed by a pacy attack. They were quick to put India on the backfoot It was a fine counterattack that set-up Bandurak’s goal in the second minute, making India scurry to recover. Both teams used every opportunity to attack in the following minutes.

To add to India’s struggles, Bandurak scored again in the 11th minute. Only minutes earlier, India had won their first PC but couldn’t make much of the chance with Harmanpreet’s drag-flick missing the target.

Going into the second quarter with a 0-2 deficit, India’s search for an opening goal continued. They showed intent by controlling the possession while Hardik Singh and Mandeep made late charges in the circle. Abhishek too stood out in the forward line but they could come up with a successful pursuit on goal.

Coming into the third quarter after a 10-minute half time break, India looked for ways to halt Great Britain’s high-intensity game. Minutes into the third quarter, Hardik launched a counterattack to make a circle entry but no real chance came from it.

In the following minute, Abhishek finally brought some respite to the Indian side with a brilliant reverse-hit goal in the 35th minute. He did well with good stick work to receive the long pass from the midfield and found the target.

Carrying on the momentum, Abhishek helped India win a PC in the next minute. But Harmanpreet’s shot missed the target.

The following minutes saw India control the game while goalkeeper PR Sreejesh kept the goal deficit narrow with some fine saves. The final moments of an intense third quarter saw both teams trading PCs but neither could score.

However, Great Britain came up with a brilliant finish as they extended the lead in the 47th minute via Calnan.

Though India challenged the goal through a video referral, the third umpire ruled against the visiting side’s appeal. There were a couple of PCs awarded to India but none were successful.

India will play Germany on June 8 in their next match here.

The Indian junior men’s hockey team went down 2-3 to Germany in a match that went down to the final minute on its Europe tour. Yogember Rawat and Gurjot Singh scored for the India on Tuesday. The first quarter had plenty of action with both teams finding themselves with opportunities to take the lead through penalty corners. As neither team got past each other’s defence, the quarter remained goalless. Five minutes into the second quarter, the Germans broke the deadlock with a field goal to take the lead.

India continued to prove the resilience that they have displayed in every game of the tour as they equalized through a penalty corner via defender Yogember to end the first half with the score reading 1-1.

India won another penalty corner a few minutes into the third quarter and forward Gurjot made full use of it to put his team in the lead. But Germany didn’t stay quiet for too long as they equalized just minutes later with a penalty corner, taking the game into the final quarter with nothing to separate the two sides.

The visitors had a chance to regain their lead early in the final quarter but were unable to find the back of the net on the penalty corner.

The Germans were awarded a penalty corner in the final moments of the game and they capitalized on it to seal the game 3-2 just in the nick of time.

India will play their final match of the Europe tour against Germany in Breda, Netherlands on Wednesday.

It’s mind over matter for Hockey India as the sports body hired renowned South African mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton to assist the men’s national team in the Paris Olympics. Upton, who played a role in India winning the 2011 Cricket World Cup, will be a part of the support staff of the country’s men’s hockey team in Paris. He was also there when the team won gold medals at the recent Asian Champions Trophy and Asian Games. Indian men’s hockey team chief coach Craig Fulton confirmed to PTI that Upton will be with his wards at the Olympics.

“We have Paddy Upton, he will be with us in Australia (for Test series). We will be using him wisely. For sure he will be there for Olympics with us,” Fulton said when asked about the mental conditioning coach’s services.

Fulton, who is also a South African, believes that world ranked fourth India are still to reach their peak and there are plenty of bases to cover in the coming months.

“We are not complete yet but, in 4-5 months from the Olympics, we will be there.

“Ideally any high-performing team wants to win any tournament. That’s the ideal goal to be realistic. But realistically, we are ranked fourth in the world now, does that mean podium ‘right now no’ but that’s the beauty of hockey,” he said.

“Realistically, we are not there there yet but we still have time.” The coach said the Indian team is currently in a development phase.

“We are in a development phase with the squad. We are trying to create some depths in different positions. That’s important to do now because it really counts in crunch matches in Olympics,” he said.

Talking about India’s recent home campaign in the FIH Pro League, Fulton said said he was neither satisfied not disappointed.

“If you look at the four matches — 2 against Holland, 2 against Australia — I think we are disappointed with the second game against Australia, 5 minutes to go we were 2-1 up and then we made a mistake which got punished and then we lost the shoot-out,” he said.

“The first game was a strange one, we got to learn a lot of lessons there tactically, but to be 0-2 down after 90 seconds.

“But the Dutch games I feel we were really organised. But 2-2 I felt was fair result for both games. They are the league leaders and they are the team to chase at the moment.” Fulton is in no mood to make any drastic changes in the style of play and said the upcoming Australia tour holds great significance for the side.

“Now we are in Bhubaneswar for next three weeks for the training and then we go to Australia for five Test matches and that’s really important, and then we come back to Bengaluru and after selection is done, we leave for the Pro League.

“We are just carrying on with our training, we are focussed on becoming very strong defensively, we need to improve our offence. We are not changing a lot, just focussing on getting better and consistent,” he said.

India are scheduled to tour Australia from April 2 till 15 for a five-Test series in Perth.

Having clinched a bronze medal in Tokyo Olympics, Indian men’s hockey team will look to upgrade to gold in the upcoming Paris Games, said skipper Harmanpreet Singh. The record eight-time gold medalists had fought hard from a 1-3 deficit to beat Germany 5-4 in the bronze play-off at Tokyo in 2021, ending their 41-year wait for an Olympic medal. Prior to that, India’s last Olympic medal was a gold in the Moscow Games in 1980. “Tokyo was a monumental moment, and we’re determined to carry that momentum into Paris. Our goal is straightforward — to upgrade the colour of the medal by aiming for gold,” Harmanpreet said in a Hockey India release, reacting to their Paris draw.

“Taking it one step at a time, our initial focus is on advancing through the group stage and securing a spot in the quarterfinals. With our experience and skill set, we believe we’re strong contenders for a podium finish,” he said.

World No. 4 India will kickstart their campaign against lower-ranked New Zealand on July 27, and then they will face No. 7 Argentina (July 29), No. 12 Ireland (July 30) and No. 2 Belgium (August 1).

They will play their last group stage game against No. 5 Australians on August 2.

Expressing his thoughts on the fixtures, Harmanpreet conveyed his enthusiasm and determination, saying, “Competing in Pool B is going to be challenging, given the undeniable potential of every team to emerge victorious on any given day.

“But we stand steadfast, mentally and physically prepared for every challenge that paves our journey at the Paris Olympics.

“As a collective force, our mindset is unwaveringly centred on our own strengths, as we believe that by harnessing our full potential, we can beat anyone,” he added.

Fresh turmoil hit Hockey India on Tuesday when its long-serving CEO Elena Norman resigned from her position owing to non-payment of dues for the past few months, sources in the national federation told PTI. The Australian held the -post for nearly 13 years and had not been paid for the last three months. Norman’s resignation comes days after the chief coach of the Indian women’s hockey team Janneke Schopman who claimed that she was not valued and respected by the national federation.

Norman’s resignation is another setback for the body, which did not give the exact reason for her departure in the official statement. However, a top source said Norman was upset about “non-payment of her dues for the last three months.” “She was also unhappy with the work environment,” the source added.

HI president and former India captain Dilip Tirkey, while accepting Norman’s resignation, expressed his gratitude towards the Australian.

“Not only as the President of Hockey India but also as a former player and avid hockey enthusiast, I want to formally acknowledge and extend my sincere gratitude for her remarkable contributions over the last 12-13 years,” Tirkey said in a statement.

“Her dedication and efforts have played a pivotal role in propelling Hockey India and Indian hockey to the commendable position they hold today. I wish her great success in all her future endeavours.” During the time she held the top job, the country’s men and women’s teams achieved career-best world rankings.

A historic bronze-medal finish by the men’s team at the Tokyo Olympic Games, ending a 41-year medal drought, was also a major accomplishment. The women also finished at an unprecedented fourth in the quadrennial showpiece.

Norman served a major part of her stint with HI when former international hockey federation (FIH) chief Narendra Batra was the president of the national body.

During her tenure, HI hosted two consecutive editions of FIH Men’s World Cup in 2018 and 2023, two Junior Men’s World Cup in 2016 and 2021 and also hosted five editions of the now-discontinued Hockey India League (HIL), a franchise-based league.

Besides, HI also hosted several international hockey events including the Champions Trophy, World League Finals in 2015 and 2017, Olympic Qualifiers in 2019 and 2024 as well as the Hockey Pro League home games during her tenure.

“Elena was also at the forefront of bringing women’s hockey to limelight, providing them equal facilities as the men’s hockey team, including cash awards recognising standout performances in international events through the Hockey India Annual Awards,” said a Hockey India statement.

“She was particularly instrumental in the success of the women’s team that qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics, a historic feat as the team qualified for the first time and participated in the Olympics after 36 years,” the statement added.

Goals from Aditya Lalage, Amandeep Lakra and Rohit helped Indian colts decimate hosts Malaysia 3-1 in the Sultan of Johor Cup tournament in Johor Bahru, Malaysia on Saturday. After drawing their opening match against Pakistan, the Uttam Singh-led India junior side was in its elements and took the lead in the 28th minute through Lalage, which was followed by goals from Amandeep (37th) and Rohit (54th) as the defending champions earned three full points. India had a confident start with forward Angad Bir Singh leading the charge and working in tandem with Aditya to set up goal-scoring chances.
However, an alert Malaysian goalkeeper Rafaizul Mohamad kept India from taking an early lead.

After a goalless first 10 minutes, Malaysia took the lead with a splendid goal from Suhaimi Irfan Shahmie in the 13th minute.

The first few minutes of the second quarter saw India create chances galore in the circle with Angad winning two back-to-back penalty corners.

However, India were not successful in converting them. India won three more penalty corners as the quarter progressed but the Malaysian defence kept the rivals at bay.

India finally scored the equaliser in the 28th minute when Lalage nudged in a blazing cross from Vishnukant Singh as the first half ended on equal terms.

Malaysia began the third quarter aggressively and were rewarded with a penalty corner. However, the Indian defence held firm and prevented the rivals from taking the lead again.

A minute later, India were quick to get a penalty corner thanks to Uttam and Gurjot’s front-row combination, but Amandeep missed the shot. In the 37th minute, Uttam’s fine circle skills earned India another PC, and this time Amandeep was on target, powering the flick past Malaysian goalie Rafaizul.

With a 2-1 lead, Uttam continued to exploit the wings, initiating a blazing run down the right wing, picking out Lalage in the centre of the circle, but the keeper was quick to rush out and swat the shot away.

The fourth quarter was dominated by India. Lalage attempted to extend India’s lead in the 50th minute with a shot, but Rafaizul saved it. As the quarter progressed, India’s attack continued, and they were rewarded when Gurjot Singh won a penalty corner with seven minutes remaining in the game, and Rohit stepped up to double India’s lead as they won the game 3-1.

India will take on New Zealand on Monday.

The FIH on Friday moved the Women’s FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers to Ranchi, India from Changzhou, China. Speaking about Ranchi hosting the Women’s FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Jharkhand Hemant Soren said, “It is an honour to welcome the global hockey fraternity to Ranchi, Jharkhand.
