Indian men’s hockey team forward Abhishek feels the mental conditioning camp the players underwent at renowned adventurer Mike Horn’s base in Switzerland ahead of the Paris Olympics has helped them prepare for high-pressure situations. The Indian team has completed a three-day mental conditioning camp at Horn’s base and are slated to play a few practice matches in the Netherlands before making their way to Paris Games.

The expectations from the team will be high after India’s bronze medal win at Tokyo Olympics.

India will start their Paris Olympics campaign against New Zealand in their first Pool B match.

“After months of focusing on the physical aspect of the game, this camp is exactly what we needed,” Abhishek said in a Hockey India release.

“The team has been spending time connecting on and off the field, improving our bond and learning to handle high-pressure situations better,” he said.

Abhishek, who has played 74 matches for India since his international debut in 2022, is set for his maiden appearance at the Olympics.

“Ever since I was 14, it has been my dream to play for India in the Olympics.” Abhishek asserted that he is someone who doesn’t buckle under pressure.

“The pressure in big tournaments doesn’t deter me or change my approach. I just try to execute on the pitch,” he said.

For Abhishek, playing for India in the Olympics will be an achievement which is far beyond what his family had thought.

“When I started doing well in hockey, the most we expected was a government job. Seeing me reach this level is thrilling for them. My brother, especially, has always been my biggest supporter,” he said.

Indian hockey team senior midfielder Manpreet Singh is excited to represent the country in his fourth Olympics in Paris, a remarkable achievement that puts him alongside the legendary Dhanraj Pillay. Set to play in his fourth Olympics, Manpreet expressed his excitement and pride, saying, “Playing in my fourth Olympics is a dream come true and a milestone that fills me with immense pride. It is a testament to years of hard work, dedication, and unwavering support from my family, coaches, and teammates. To follow in the footsteps of a legend like Dhanraj Pillay, who has been an inspiration for countless players including myself, is an honour beyond words.”

“I am excited to give my all for India in Paris, representing not just the team but the hopes and dreams of millions of fans back home. Our team is ready to show the world the spirit and strength of Indian hockey. We have prepared rigorously, and we are determined to perform at our best, bringing honour to our country and making our countrymen proud,” he added.

Manpreet made his senior team debut in 2011. Since then, the dynamic midfielder has amassed an impressive 370 caps and scored 27 goals, showcasing his skill and consistency on the field. His journey with the national team includes participation in three previous Olympic Games: the 2012 London Olympics, the 2016 Rio Olympics, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he led the team to a historic Bronze medal under his captaincy to mark India’s first Olympic hockey medal in 41 years.

Also, speaking about the team’s mindset and expectations for the Paris Olympics and if there will be any pressure to match the Tokyo Olympics’ performance, Manpreet asserted, “There is no pressure on us; instead, we are looking forward to enjoying our performance in every match. We must not underestimate any team, regardless of their ranking. Each team will bring their best to the field, and so will we.

“Our focus is on fulfilling our responsibilities and supporting each other as a cohesive unit. We believe that by concentrating on our game and maintaining our composure, we can achieve great results. It’s all about playing with passion and determination, without letting pressure hinder our performance.”

Notably, the Indian men’s hockey team on Monday departed for Mike Horn’s base in Switzerland, where they will undergo a three-day training period designed to instil mental toughness. Following this, the Harmanpreet Singh-led team will move to the Netherlands for a series of practice matches before arriving in Paris on July 20.

India are placed in Pool B for the Paris 2024 Olympics, alongside defending Champions Belgium, Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, and Ireland.

To advance to the Quarter-Finals, the team must secure a top-four finish in their pool. Pool A features the Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, South Africa, and host nation France, setting the stage for a highly competitive 12-team men’s hockey tournament.

The Indian junior women’s hockey team lost 4-6 to Germany in its fifth match of their tour of Europe on Monday. However, after conceding six goals, India rallied to score four goals and asserted themselves in the second half of the match. Sanjana Horo, Bhinima Dan and Kanika Siwach scored for India. Like their previous match, Germany scored early in the first quarter and doubled their lead soon after. Despite trailing, the Indian defence did well to successfully defend multiple penalty corners. In the final minutes of the first quarter, India won a penalty corner but the scoreline remained 2-0, in favour of Germany.

India began the second quarter on a positive note but failed to find the back of the opposition net.

Germany struck their third goal soon to put themselves in a dominant position at half-time.

Germany continued to assert themselves in the third quarter, scoring thrice, including a successful penalty corner conversion to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

But India fought back and scored their first goal when Sanjana Horo sounded the board late in the quarter.

India turned up the pressure on Germany in the final quarter. Sanjana Horo scored India’s second goal before Binima Dhan and Kanika Siwach found the opposition net to reduce the margin to 4-6.

On Sunday, the Indians lost 0-1 to Germany in their fourth match.

India had a challenging first quarter as Germany broke the deadlock early match to take a 1-0 lead.

A goalless second and third quarter unfolded, ensuring Germany stayed ahead, even as India worked hard to score an equalizer.

In the final quarter, Germany nearly doubled their lead, but their penalty stroke was denied by India’s goalkeeper.

With minutes left on the clock, India’s final opportunity of the match came in the form of a penalty corner, but they failed to convert it and conceded a 0-1 defeat to Germany.

India will play their next match against Dutch club side Oranje Rood in Breda, Netherlands on May 29.

The Indian women’s hockey team continued its winless streak in the Belgium leg of the FIH Pro League, slumping to 0-3 defeat against Argentina on Sunday. Celina Di Santo (1st minute), Maria Campoy (39th) and Maria Granatto (47th) scored for Argentina in India’s final match of the Belgium leg. Argentina stormed ahead in the very first minute, dissecting the Indian high press and penetrating to the shooting circle, where Di Santo deflected in Granatto’s shot to score their first goal. As India struggled to play out of their half, a period of Argentinian dominance followed, resulting in a penalty corner eight minutes into the game, but they failed to extend their lead.

India began stringing a few passes together and got into the game. They forced Argentine goalkeeper Clara Barberi into action after a low drive into the circle from Udita found Lalremsiami, who failed to score from close range.

Argentina regained control of the proceedings in the second quarter, earning a slurry of penalty corners but an alert duo of Bichu Devi Kharibam and Salima Tete helped keep the ball out of the nets.

A rare Indian foray into the shooting circle resulted in a penalty corner but Deepika’s drag flick was comfortably kept out.

Argentina pressed hard in the rest of the quarter but the Indian defence held firm to keep the scoreline 0-1 heading into the second half.

India earned a penalty corner early in the third quarter but failed to create a goal scoring opportunity.

Argentina made a breakthrough in the 39th minute, as Campoy picked up the ball on the left wing and bulldozed into the circle, dodging a few challenges and slotting it past Savita Punia to double their lead.

India had a chance to score in the last minute of the quarter but Navneet Kaur’s tomahawk was saved by Barberi.

Argentina earned a penalty corner as soon as the final quarter began and Granatto directed Agustina Gorzelany’s flick over Savita into goal to increase their lead.

Argentina stepped up the intensity after the goal and pegged India back, creating multiple chances through Granatto but a resilient Indian backline managed to thwart any further advances.

The Indian women’s hockey team will now take on Germany in its next match at London on June 1.

The Indian women’s hockey team on Saturday lost to Belgium 1-2 — its back-to-back defeat to the home side — as its European leg of the FIH Pro League further slipped into chaos. The Indian women’s team, under new coach Harendra Singh and captain Salima Tete, were beaten 0-2 by Belgium on Thursday after opening its campaign with a 0-5 thrashing at the hands of Argentina on Wednesday. Belgium were ahead 2-0 at half-time with goals from Ambre Ballenghien (14th minute) and Vanessa Blockmans (20th). Both the Belgium goals came from penalty corners.

Kumari Sangita pulled one back for India in the 34th minute with a field goal. The fourth quarter did not yield any goal for both sides.

Belgium earned three penalty corners in the match while India got none.

Belgium began the game with a full-court press, making it difficult for the Indians to play out from the back.

The Indians withstood the initial pressure and began dominating possession, while Belgium continued to press, looking for a chance to score on the counter-attack.

The pressure resulted in a penalty corner for Belgium, and Ballenghien stepped up to power the ball past Savita Punia into goal, putting her team ahead as the first quarter drew to a close.

In the second quarter, Belgium employed the same tactic while India attempted to stitch a few passes together in the opposition half.

Five minutes into the quarter, Belgium’s high press resulted in another penalty corner, and Blockmans pounced on Louise Versavel’s deflected shot to score the second goal of the game.

India reacted to the goal through Tete, who turned on a sixpence in midfield, blazed to the right corner, and unleashed a rocket on goal, which was saved by Belgian keeper Elodie Picard.

India struggled to play out of their half as Belgium continued to close down their passing lanes, forcing the Indian defence into a scramble to keep it 2-0 heading into half-time.

Belgium further intensified the pressure in the third quarter.

However, Jyoti bypassed the press to find Deepika, whose forward pass deflected to Sangita in the circle. She flashed it into Picard’s goal to bring India back into the game.

After the goal, India occasionally started to beat the Belgian press, but the home team was quick to threaten the Indian defence. They won the ball high up the pitch and forced Savita into action.

Delphine Marien, who was later named player of the match, remained a constant threat down the right wing for Belgium, but the Indian defence stood firm, and the quarter ended 2-1 in Belgium’s favour.

The final quarter saw India turn over the ball in their half, but Belgium failed to capitalize. The game became stretched as both teams looked to score quickly towards the end.

India created a chance to score through Deepika, but her shot was saved, and Sangita snatched the chance to score from the deflection but was not able to convert it.

Savita had to stay alert in goal as the Belgian forwards constantly won the ball and threatened to score.

With five minutes left in the quarter, Belgium earned a penalty corner, but the ball sailed wide of the post.

India grew into the game, pushing ahead in search of an equalizer. Deepika was handed a chance to score in the final moments, but the Belgian defence rushed to subdue the chaos in front of the goal and sealed a 2-1 victory.

This was the Indian women’s team’s seventh defeat on the trot against Belgium in all international matches.

India will play against Argentina in their next match at Antwerp, Belgium on Sunday.

The Indian hockey team went down 1-5 against Australia in their first opening game of the five-match Test series here. Tim Brand (3′), Tom Wickham (20′, 38′), Joel Rintala (37′), and Flynn Ogilvie (57′) were the goalscorers for the hosts, while Gurjant Singh (47′) netted a solitary goal for India. In the opening quarter, India initiated with a strategy centred on ball possession and dictating the game’s pace. However, despite their efforts, it was Australia that seized an early advantage in the match.

Tim Brand (3′) broke through India’s defence on a swift counter-attack, finding the back of the net and putting Australia in the lead. Responding to the setback, India intensified their offensive manoeuvres, mounting pressure on the hosts. Australia, in turn, ramped up their attacks, earning two consecutive penalty corners. Nevertheless, India’s goalkeeper PR Sreejesh exhibited remarkable skill, thwarting Australia’s attempts to widen their lead with two outstanding saves.

Meanwhile, the Indian team penetrated Australia’s defence and even won a penalty corner but couldn’t capitalise on it. The first quarter ended with Australia having a 1-0 lead.

India kicked off the second quarter with a determined push to equalize the score, adopting an aggressive approach. Despite earning an early penalty corner opportunity, they were unable to capitalize on it. The home team, on the other hand, continued to press forward, eventually reaping rewards when Tom Wickham (20′) executed a remarkable stretch to score a superb goal, effectively doubling Australia’s lead.

Following their successful expansion of the lead, the hosts shifted their focus to maintaining possession, effectively stifling India’s offensive advances. As the halftime whistle blew, Australia comfortably held a 2-0 lead, firmly in control of the proceedings.

In the third quarter, Australia persistently applied pressure on India by pressing them and testing their defensive capabilities at frequent intervals. This relentless approach paid dividends as they swiftly added two more goals to their tally. Joel Rintala (37′) and Tom Wickham (38′) capitalized on the opportunities presented, effectively stretching Australia’s lead to 4-0 in quick succession.

In the fourth and final quarter, Australia won an early penalty corner, but the Indian team not only denied the hosts from capitalising on it but also pulled one back on a counterattack as Gurjant Singh (47′) netted a goal through a powerful shot. However, Australia restored their four-goal lead as Flynn Ogilvie (57′) scored through a penalty corner to contribute to the hosts’ 5-1 win.

The team will take on Australia in their second game of the tour on 7th April 2024 at 14:00hrs IST.

All the matches of the India tour of Australia will be broadcast on Sports18- 3 and Sports18- 1 HD. The matches will also be live-streamed on Jio Cinema.

The in-form Indian men’s hockey team will look to pass the “litmus test” that the formidable Australian side will pose at home when the two face off in a five-match Test series beginning in Perth on Saturday. The series offers India a chance to gauge their strengths and capabilities ahead of the Paris Olympics. “This series serves as a litmus test for our team’s preparedness ahead of the Paris Olympics. We aim to fine-tune our strategies and identify areas for improvement to ensure we are in peak form for the mega event.

“Our focus will be on executing our game plan effectively and adapting to the challenges posed by the Australian side,” chief coach Craig Fulton said.

The away assignment offers the ideal chance for India to break their decade-long dry spell against Australia and secure a Test series win.

Notably, India won the last away Test series against Australia back in 2014.

Fresh from their impressive performances in the FIH Pro League in February, the Indian squad, under the leadership of Harmanpreet Singh, is approaching this assignment with confidence.

India’s exceptional abilities and unwavering determination were evident as they clinched victories in three out of four matches in Bhubaneswar (within regulation time) and remained unbeaten in Rourkela (also within regulation time). However, they had lost both their matches against Australia.

With the two sides drawn in the same group at the Olympics, the Test series provides the perfect platform for both to gauge each other’s strengths and weaknesses before the ultimate showdown in Paris Games.

“We are geared up for the challenge that lies ahead. Every match is an opportunity for us to showcase our skills and make our nation proud. We are aware of the tough competition Australia presents, but we are confident in our abilities and our preparations,” captain Harmanpreet said.

“As a team, we are united and determined to give our best on the field. Our goal is to not only perform well in this series but also to learn and grow as a unit, laying a strong foundation for our campaign in the Paris Olympics.” India and Australia have clashed on the hockey field a total of 43 times since 2013, according to data from the FIH Data Hub.

Among these match-ups, Australia have emerged victorious 28 times, while India have celebrated triumph in eight games. Additionally, seven matches have concluded in a draw.

With India ranked fourth and Australia fifth in the current world rankings, the stage is set for a gripping battle between two hockey powerhouses.

Match starts 2PM IST.

Harendra Singh is the frontrunner to replace Janneke Schopman as the Indian women’s hockey team coach after he recently appeared for an interview, with the national body suggesting that he is the best person to lift the side following its failure to qualify for the Paris Olympics. Harendra has served at the same position in the past before being appointed as the United States men’s team coach in 2021. “Yes, Harendra is in line to replace Janneke. Hockey India is keen to appoint him. He knows the structure of Indian hockey having coached both the men’s and women’s teams in the past. He is the best person to take the women’s side to where it belongs,” a source in the national federation told PTI.

“Moreover, it is in his best interest also having been out of the country for the past couple of years. The only issue which remains is negotiation of salary because he is drawing a handsome amount in the US and it remains to be seen whether it can be matched.” Hockey India secretary-general Bhola Nath Singh confirmed that Harendra appeared for the interview but said his appointment is not yet confirmed as there are other candidates as well.

“Yes, Harendra has appeared for the interview but nothing has been decided from our side yet. There are 11-12 candidates and we will decide taking into account every aspect,” Bhola Nath told PTI without elaborating further.

According to the Sports Ministry rules, Rs 3 lakh per month is the cap for Indian coaches but it has been learnt that Harendra is demanding more as per his current package with the US team.

If appointed, Harendra will replace Schopman, who quit last month complaining about difficult work environment for foreign coaches in India after the women’s team failed to qualify for the Paris Games.

Harendra has worn many hats in Indian hockey in the past. He was appointed head coach of the Indian junior team in 2014, and under his guidance the side won the 2016 men’s Junior World Cup in Lucknow.

Following his success with the junior side, he was appointed the head coach of the senior women’s national team in September 2017. The side went on to win the gold medal at the 2017 Asia Cup.

In May 2018, Harendra replaced Dutchman Sjoerd Marijne as the senior men’s team coach with the former taking over the women’s side.

Harendra, however, was shown the door in January 2019 following a string of poor performances by the men’s side.

Indian men’s hockey team goalkeeper PR Sreejesh doesn’t want to predict his future at the moment and will take a call on his retirement after the Paris Olympics but the veteran custodian aspires to be chief coach of the national side by 2036. Sreejesh, who will be featuring in his fourth Olympics this year, refused to believe that the upcoming edition in Paris could be his last outing in the sporting extravaganza. He remains optimistic but said once he calls it quits, he definitely wants to give back to the game in one or the other way.

“For me, this Olympics is really important because at this age it is really hard for me to talk about next four year cycle. From the last Olympics, I was only taking one year at a time. The rest decision comes after the Olympics,” Sreejesh told PTI in an interview.

“I don’t think so (it will be his last Olympics) because when you are 36 and doing a beep test of 20.8 , I think it’s quite good.

“(But) after my career I will take a break for sure. I will need time to transfer myself from a player to any role, as a coach, assistant coach or goalkeeping coach. My plan is for long time. My plan is for 2036 or 2040.

“I want to improve myself, I want to see myself as a coach or a chief coach of the Indian national hockey team in that time because by that time I will be more experienced. I want to be a part an Indian independent coaching staff of the national hockey team,” he elaborated about his plans.

Sreejesh, who captained the national team at the 2016 Rio Olympics, played a key role in India’s historic bronze medal-winning feat at the Tokyo Games and he believes the current side has the potential to produce better results in Paris.

“The goal everytime for an athlete is to win a gold medal in the Olympics but you need to consider the realistic factors. All the top 6 teams in the world are now beating each other. We have got an open pool where anyone can beat anyone,” he said.

“I believe that we have got the potential to finish on the podium for sure but you can’t be overconfident.” Renowned mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton, who was with the squad in Hangzhou Asian Games, will be working with the Indian players in the run upto the Olympics and will there in Paris too, a fact confirmed by chief coach Craig Fulton.

And Sreejesh feels Upton’s presence will be of great help for the players to deal with the “mental confusion”.

“The Olympics is not a normal platform. There a lot of things, it’s a pressure venue, it’s a magical world, it’s a festival. It is a kind of situation which can fascinate any player. Paddy was a part of the cricket team when we won the World Cup in 2011, he is an experienced person who can help us to choose wisely and clear our mental confusion.” India will travel to Perth next month for a five-Test series against Australia and Sreejesh believes the tour holds great significance.

“It was a good phase (India leg of Pro League), we enjoyed and learned from it. We are now moving forward because it’s a process towards Olympics. We tried a lot of new things. Pro League is sort of a model exam before the big call.

“Most of the teams we played here whom we will meet in the Olympics. We wanted to try some things and we wanted to see how they react to that. Second thing how other teams reacted to our changes and lastly how the players reacted to the pressure,” he said.

“The upcoming Australia tour will be the last kind of preparation where everyone will get an opportunity. Overall it’s a sort of rehearsal before the Olympics.” After the tour of Australia, India will travel to Antwerp, Belgium for the second leg of Pro League in May, which will be their last round of preparations before the Olympics.

“That’s the last phase. It really means you are going through all the question papers before the board exam. After May we get a small break and in June we will have an entire month to analyse ourself to get better before the Olympics,” Sreejesh concluded.
