Railways pacer Himanshu Sangwan found himself in the collective consciousness of Indian cricket followers after taking the “most important wicket of his life,” dismissing superstar Virat Kohli in a Ranji Trophy match against Delhi on Friday. Sangwan, who played U-19 cricket for Delhi alongside the likes of Rishabh Pant before moving to Railways, uprooted the superstar’s off-stump in the first session on day two to grab the limelight. He celebrated the prized wicket with full enthusiasm, unmindful of the attention he had attracted on social media with his exploits.

After stumps on day two, the 29-year-old ticket collector in Northern Railways did hope his ‘Kohli’ moment will lead to something ‘life-changing’.

“It is the most important wicket of my life. It goes without saying. Virat Kohli is an inspiration to the whole country,” said Sangwan, who is in the middle of his 24th first class game having made his debut for Railways back in 2019.

Thousands of fans turning up at the stadium because of Kohli provided an extra dose of motivation for Sangwan.

“First time in life I saw so many people turning up for a Ranji Trophy game. It was special for all of us,” he said.

After a couple of play and misses in his vulnerable zone — outside the off-stump — Kohli went on the offensive in the following over bowled by Sangwan.

Standing way outside the crease, Kohli disdainfully dispatched Sangwan towards the straight boundary.

The very next ball, Kohli went for an expansive drive off a good length delivery but missed it completely to see his off-stump shattered.

The cricketing icon had struggled with outside the off-stump line throughout the tour of Australia. Considering that, did Sangwan and Co. have a set plan for the former India captain? “We did not plan for one particular batter.

Majority of the Delhi batters like to attack so our plan was stick to channel bowling and draw the outside edge,” said the cricketer from Charkhi Dadri in Haryana. He is now settled in Najafgarh.

Sangwan also gave due credit to Railways for giving him an opportunity after he could not make the senior team in Delhi.

Will remember this game for life

Sumit Mathur and skipper Ayush Badoni ensured a healthy first innings lead with their 133-run stand forthe fifth wicket. The left-hander remains not out on 78 with Delhi reaching 334 for seven in response to Railways’ 241.

Sumit too spoke about the experience of playing a game involving Kohli.

“I will remember this time for the rest of my life. He has mingled with us nicely and it is a different experience to play alongside him. As long as I play the game I will remember this moment,” said Mathur.

Kohli is playing a domestic red-ball game after 12 years.

Virat Kohli‘s cheap dismissal in the first innings of the Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Railways triggered the iconic cricketer’s fans, who decided to went their anger on social media. Kohli, making his return for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy after 13 years, was undone by a brilliant delivery from Railways pacer Himanshu Sangwan. As a result, Virat only lasted for 15 balls, scoring 6 runs in the process. Disappointed by Kohli’s early dismissal, his fans tried to target Himanshu Sangwan on social media, but vented their anger on the wrong person.

Another Instagram user, by the name of Himanshu Sangwan, whose profile was public, suddenly experienced immense traffic on his account, while the comments section of his profile also got filled with hateful words from angry fans.

The person even shared a video and put status, saying he isn’t the same Himanshu Sangwan who dismissed Kohli at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday.

For the 5000-odd crowd that assembled here to watch Kohli (6 off 15 balls), it was fun while it lasted but when he had his off-stump uprooted by Railways pacer Himanshu Sangwan in the 28th over of Delhi’s first innings, a majority of them took no time to exit the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Kohli came out to bat to a loud reception following the leg before dismissal of Yash Dhull at about 10.30am local time, which was an hour into day’s play.

It was left-arm pacer Rahul Sharma who first got to bowl at the cricketing icon and with a spring in his stride, he bowled a yorker down the leg-side only to realise that he had overstepped.

Considering the batter in front, Rahul went for that little extra in his following ball and it turned out to be another no ball.

In the next over bowled by medium pacer Kunal Yadav, Kohli tried to assert himself and played and missed twice to balls pitched on his vulnerable zone — wide outside the off-stump.

After collecting two singles, Kohli decided to dominate the opposition — right-arm pacer Sangwan in this particular over.

Standing way outside the crease, Kohli disdainfully dispatched Sangwan towards the straight boundary.

It was still the first session and the ball was doing a bit but in his attempt to dominate Sangwan, the very next ball, Kohli went for an expansive drive off a good length delivery but missed it completely to see his off-stump shattered.

The ball seamed back in contributing to Kohli’s downfall.

He had a quick look at the surface before trudging back to the pavilion and with him his sea of fans headed towards the exit door.

Himanshu Sangwan is a name that Indian cricket fans are going to remember for a long time. The pacer spoiled Virat Kohli‘s highly-anticipated Ranji Trophy return by dismissing him for just 6 runs. Fans flocked in thousands at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi for the Delhi vs Railways clash but Kohli’s stay on the pitch lasted for just 15 balls. For the 5000-odd crowd that assembled here to watch Kohli play for the team he last featured for 13 years ago, the fun didn’t last for long. Kohli’s off-stump was up-rooted by Railways pacer Himanshu Sangwan in the 28th over of Delhi’s first innings, a majority of them took no time to exit the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Who is Himanshu Sangwan?

The 29-year-old pacer was born in Delhi on September 2, 1995. He went on to make his List A debut for Railways in 2019, playing for the team in the 2019-20 Vijay Hazare Trophy on 27 September. Himanshu then made his T20 debut in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on November 8 before getting his first red-ball outing with Railways on December 09 in Ranji Trophy on December 9.

A consistent performer, Himanshu arrived in the Ranji Trophy match against Delhi with 77 first-class wickets to his name. He has already featured in 23 Ranji Trophy matches to his name. In the white-ball format, Himanshu has scalped 21 List A wickets from 17 matches and 5 T20 wickets from seven matches.

Ahead of first domestic red-ball appearance since November 2012, Kohli had trained with former India coach Sanjay Bangar to iron out flaws in his batting that crept up on the tour of Australia.

More specifically, it was the ball outside the off-stump that haunted the former India captain on the two-month long tour Down Under.

Kohli came out to bat to a loud reception following the leg before dismissal of Yash Dhull at about 10.30am local time, which was an hour into day’s play.

After collecting two singles, Kohli decided to dominate the opposition — right-arm pacer Sangwan in this particular over.

It was still the first session and the ball was doing a bit but in his attempt to dominate Sangwan, the very next ball, Kohli went for an expansive drive off a good length delivery but missed it completely to see his off-stump shattered.
