The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced three changes to India’s squad for the 5-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. The trio of Sai Sudharsan, Jitesh Sharma and Harshit Rana have been added to the roster for the first two matches, as replacements for Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who are still in Barbados.

Originally slated to join the Zimbabwe-bound squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series starting Saturday, 6th July, the trio will travel to India first with the rest of the ICC T20 World Cup-winning Indian squad before departing for Harare. Samson, Dube and Jaiswal couldn’t fly out earlier from Barbados as a hurricane shut down the airport at the island nation.

India’s squad for 1st & 2nd T20I against Zimbabwe: Shubman Gill (Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhishek Sharma, Rinku Singh, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Riyan Parag, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar, Tushar Deshpande, Sai Sudharsan, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Harshit Rana

The unforseen circumstances has forced BCCI to name replacements for the three players.

Pacer Khaleel Ahmed and batter Rinku Singh, travelling reserves for the T20 World Cup, are also currently in Barbados. The BCCI has not named replacements for the duo even though they are in the squad for Zimbabwe series.

Sudharsan is currently playing county cricket for Surrey at the Oval in London. He is expected to leave for Harare immediately.

Players Still Stuck In Barbados

India’s T20 World Cup-winning team is expected to fly from Barbados today, with the airport expected to be reopened.

The World Cup winning team, originally scheduled to depart from Barbados on Monday at 11 AM local time (8:30 PM IST), have been stranded in Barbados for the past two days due to Hurricane Beryl, which resulted in airports and businesses shut down.

The hurricane, which has tensified into an extremely dangerous Category 4 in the past hours, has sparked warnings of life-threatening winds and dangerous storm.

According to latest report from the National Hurricane Centre of US, Beryl, a hurricane which was upgraded to a category four on Monday, has intensified to a category 5 storm after making landfall in the Windward Islands as it churned towards Jamaica.

The hurricane was upgraded to a category four on Monday, bringing life-threatening winds and storm lashed Barbados and nearby islands.

Shah Rukh Khan and Team KKR blow flying kiss to celebrate their win© X (Twitter)

The 17th edition of the IPL concluded on Sunday with Kolkata Knight Riders clinching the coveted trophy after thrashing Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets in Chennai. This was KKR’s third IPL title as they earlier won it 2012 and 2014. This victory triggered a wave of celebration at the MA Chidambaram stadium as Team KKR left no stone unturned in their merry making. However, KKR co-owner and Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan completely stole the show with his wild celebration.

While posing for the camera with the trophy, SRK prompted his team to blow a flying kiss. Following the words of their leader, the team did the hilarious gesture, leaving the viewers in splits.

This flying kiss gesture was in reference to KKR star Harshit Rana, who was suspended by the BCCI for giving send-off to batters in this manner.

Rana first blew a flying kiss to SRH batter Mayank Agarwal, for which he received a fine and a warning. Later, he he almost did to Delhi Capitals batter Abishekh Porel, after which he was suspended for one match by the BCCI.

“Absolutely comprehensive. This is what we demanded from the team and every individual. They stood up to the right occasion and the feeling is hard to express. It (wait) was so long, longer than the match. We played like invincibles throughout the season. There’s so much to cherish right now. It is pleasing, the performance has been flawless throughout. I am running out of words right now. We have been tremendous from game one, we stepped up today,” said KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer after winning the title.

“All we demanded from ourselves was to back each other whatever the situation is. The game could have either way. They have been playing phenomenal cricket – SRH – throughout the season. We were lucky to bowl first and every situation went in our favour. Thanks to SRH the way they played. Looking forward to play more competitive cricket,” he added.

Kolkata Knight Riders players had a harrowing experience as they were forced to spend a night at Varanasi after their flight from Lucknow to Kolkata was diverted multiple times due to bad weather. Following their massive 98-run win over Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday, the Shreyas Iyer-led side left on Monday evening for Kolkata at 5:45pm. The team was scheduled to arrive at 7.25pm. But the charter flight had to be diverted to Guwahati first and then to Varanasi after adverse weather conditions made it impossible to land the plane in Kolkata.

The KKR media team provided an update at 8.46pm, saying, “Due to inclement weather over Kolkata, the KKR charter flight has been diverted to Guwahati. We’ve just landed here.” Then another update at 9.43pm said, “We’ve got clearance to fly back to Kolkata now, from Guwahati. Estimated arrival: 11pm.” However, the ordeal was not over for the players and support staff as multiple attempts to land the flight failed, forcing the officials to divert the flight mid-air to Varanasi.

“Flight took off from Guwahati to Kolkata, was scheduled to land at 11 PM. Couldn’t land once again due to bad weather, despite several attempts. Diverted mid-air to Varanasi now. Just landed here,” said an update at 1:15 am.

The KKR team then spent the night at Varanasi and will be travelling to Kolkata this afternoon.

“The team would be checking into Varanasi hotel for overnight stay. Return flight to Kolkata TBD on Tuesday (7 May) afternoon,” the KKR media team said in the final update at 3:00 am.

Fortunately, KKR’s next game is against Mumbai Indians at Edens Garden on May 11. The two-time former champions will play Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on May 13 and Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on May 19 for their final two league matches.

Harshit Rana in action for KKR during IPL 2024© X (formerly Twitter)

Kolkata Knight Riders fast bowler Harshit Rana took a hilarious dig at BCCI following their win over Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2024. Harshit was initially fined 50 percent of his match fee for giving a send-off to Mayank Agarwal during KKR’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was handed an one-match suspension and docked 100 percent of match fees after another incident against Delhi Capitals which IPL deemed as a “breach of Code Of Conduct”.

Harshit found him in the headlines once again after KKR’s win over LSG on Sunday when he teased his infamous ‘flying kiss’ celebration but did not complete it. This was the celebration that led to his punishments but this time, he kept his head down and put his finger on his lips.

Following the match, KKR’s charter flight from Lucknow to Kolkata had to be diverted to Guwahati due to bad weather. In a video going viral on social media, Harshit can be seen having a conversation with head coach Chandrakant Pandit regarding their remaining fixtures in the IPL 2024.

Harshit suggested that since they are already in Guwahati, they should just play Rajasthan Royals in the next few days and complete that fixture. The two teams will face each other in the final game of the group stages in Guwahati on April 19. Chandrakant Pandit was left amused by the suggestion and he playfully replied that it is a good idea and he will talk to his connections in BCCI about the suggestion.

“BCCI se toh baat karo hi matt (Please don’t talk to BCCI),” Harshit replied.

Harshit ended up taking 3 wickets for KKR in their victory over LSG.

“We don’t want to take anything lightly and this is the kind of approach we want to have to make it to the playoffs. The coaches told me to focus on hitting the hard lengths and I got rewards for doing the same. I keep working on the areas that I need to improve, it becomes very handy when he (Russell) comes in and picks those wickets during the middle overs and it helps in shifting the momentum as well,” Harshit said.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) players took a short flight from Mumbai to Lucknow ahead of their next game of IPL 2024 on Sunday. After breaching the Wankhede Stadium, a venue where they hadn’t won against Mumbai Indians (MI) in 12 years, KKR have now set their sights on a league double over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), having beaten them at Eden Gardens earlier this season. During their match against MI, KKR were without emerging pacer Harshit Rana, who was serving a one-match ban for a Code of Conduct breach.

Harshit had been handed a one-match suspension along with a 100 per cent of his match fee fine for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during a match against Delhi Capitals.

The KKR pacer was found guilty of committing a Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. Rana admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction.

For the unversed, Harshit has made the headlines multiple time this season due to his “flying kiss” celebration. He had given a fiery send off to SRH batter Mayank Agarwal earlier during the season, and came close to doing the same to DC wicketkeeper-batter Abhishek Porel.

However, former KKR captain Nitish Rana poked fun at Harshit during their flight to Lucknow. In a video shared by KKR on their official X handle, Nitish asked Harshit by saying, “How about another flying kiss?”

While Harshit couldn’t contain his laughter, he said “no” to Nitish’s request without any second thoughts.

During his last outing, Rana picked two wickets against DC. In total, he has bagged 11 wickets in eight matches.

With 12 points, KKR is currently ranked second in the rankings and has the highest NRR of any team in the competition, at 1.096.

Match 54 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 pits Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday. Led by Shreyas Iyer, Kolkata Knight Riders beat Mumbai Indians by 24 runs in their last outing and are currently placed second in the standings with 14 points from 10 games after seven wins and three losses. Hosts Lucknow Super Giants, on the other hand, find themselves in third spot with 12 points after claiming six wins and suffering four losses.

Ahead of LSG’s clash with KKR in Lucknow, let’s have a look at the predicted XIs of both sides for this fixture.

LSG Predicted XI

Quinton de Kock

Hard-hitting batter Quinton de Kock has had a decent run this season. He has scored 236 runs in nine matches, including three fifty-plus scores. The Proteas cricketer will be eager to hammer KKR’s bowlers at home.

KL Rahul (captain and wicketkeeper)

LSG captain KL Rahul has smashed 406 runs in 10 matches and has struck three half-centuries. Rahul will be keen to produce a quick-fire knock and guide LSG to a brisk start against KKR.

Marcus Stoinis

Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis will add depth to LSG’s middle-order batting while also being a valuable asset to their fast-bowling unit. He has scored 316 runs and taken four wickets in 10 matches so far this season.

Deepak Hooda

Deepak Hooda hasn’t quite fired for LSG this season. The right-handed batter has managed to score 129 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 141.75. Hooda’s form will be crucial for LSG’s success against Kolkata.

Nicholas Pooran

Nicholas Pooran has been on song for Lucknow in IPL 2024. With 305 runs in 10 matches, Pooran is LSG’s one of the top scorers this season and boasts a remarkable average of 61 and a strike rate of 160.52.

Ayush Badoni

Ayush Badoni delivered an unbeaten 55 when his team needed him the most. Badoni and Arshad Khan established the highest eighth-wicket partnership in IPL history, scoring 73 runs against Delhi Capitals on April 12. He’ll need to maintain his form in this match as well.

Krunal Pandya

Krunal Pandya, known for his left-arm spin and aggressive hitting, adds balance to LSG’s lineup. He’s scored 74 runs and taken five wickets in 10 matches. Lucknow will require his services to tackle high-flying KKR.

Ravi Bishnoi

Ravi Bishnoi brings a potent spin-bowling alternative to LSG. So far, he has picked six wickets in 10 outings with an economy rate of 8.52. Bishnoi’s spin variations can help LSG make early breakthroughs against KKR.

Arshad Khan

Arshad Khan and Badoni formed the highest eighth-wicket partnership in IPL history, reaching 73 runs against DC. Arshad is a top-tier all-rounder who can provide depth to LSG’s batting.

Matt Henry

New Zealand speedster Matt Henry will most likely open the bowling for Lucknow against KKR. Known for his ability to swing the ball at good pace, Henry has bowled at an economy of 8.60 picking up one wicket in three matches so far.

Yash Thakur

Yash Thakur is currently the highest wicket-taker for LSG with 10 wickets in eight matches this year. His ability to take wickets in middle overs makes him an X-factor prodigy for the home side.

KKR Predicted XI

Phil Salt

Englishman Phil Salt has been in spectacular form for KKR this season and has provided them with blitzkrieg starts as an opener. A destructive batter, Salt has made 397 runs in 10 IPL 2024 games with an average of 44.11 and a strike rate of 180.45.

Sunil Narine

After a few lean IPL seasons with the bat, Sunil Narine has looked in splendid touch as a batter. Averaging at 38, he has smashed 380 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 179.24 this year. He’s also claimed 13 wickets in 10 games and is one of KKR’s go-to players this season.

Angkrish Raghuvanshi

Young Angkrish Raghuvanshi has looked good whenever he’s been out in the middle. In six innings in IPL 2024, Angkrish has scored 131 runs at a strike rate of 165.82 and also has a fifty to his name. He will be eager to make an impact once again and is a player to keep an eye on.

Shreyas Iyer

KKR captain Shreyas Iyer has had a topsy-turvy season but remains a crucial player for the team in the middle order. Iyer has scored 257 runs in 10 games at an average of 36.71 and will be raring to go against LSG.

Venkatesh Iyer

Even though he’s had limited time with the bat in the middle, Venkatesh Iyer has still managed to make two fifties this season. The southpaw has scored 224 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 142.67. Iyer’s match-winning 70 against Mumbai on Friday prevented KKR from a sudden collapse.

Rinku Singh

While Rinku Singh hasn’t set this IPL season alight like he has done in the past, the hard-hitting left-hander has managed to produce a few impactful cameos for the team. He has made 132 runs at a strike rate of 146.66 and will have a role to play as a finisher against Lucknow.

Andre Russell

A match-winner with both bat and ball, Andre Russell has produced impressive performances, having led KKR to multiple wins already this season. He has scored 186 runs in seven innings at an average of 37.20 and a brilliant strike rate of 189.79. Russell has also taken 11 wickets, making him one of KKR’s most important players.

Ramandeep Singh

All-rounder Ramandeep Singh has done well in his limited time at the crease. He’s scored his runs at a strike rate of 172.91 and is capable of chipping in with the ball, making him an integral member in the side.

Mitchell Starc

Mitchell Starc hasn’t been at his best in IPL 2024 and has conceded quite a few runs in nine games so far. His 11 wickets have come at a price but the fact that he has bowled in pressure circumstances cannot be overlooked. His match-defining four-wicket haul against MI was crucial for KKR on Friday.

Varun Chakravarthy

Spinner Varun Chakravarthy has been among the wickets in IPL 2024 having claimed 13 scalps so far. He’s performed relatively well against LSG in the past and will back himself to get the better of their batters come Sunday.

Harshit Rana

Fast bowler Harshit Rana seems to be having a decent IPL season so far. The right-arm pacer has scalped 11 wickets in seven innings and will be hoping to be at his best against LSG.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pacer Harshit Rana is enjoying a breakthrough season in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he has picked up 11 wickets matches so far. The 22-year-old has impressed many experts and veteran cricketers with his stellar show in IPL 2024, and his performances have also earned him a reckoning for the T20 World Cup squad. Harshit, however, has been involved in a few incidents which haven’t gone down well with fans or even former cricketers.

Harshit had come under the scanner for giving a flying-kiss send-off to Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Mayank Agarwal earlier during the season.

The player was docked 60 per cent of his match fees by the BCCI and former India captain Sunil Gavaskar had also slammed him for the gesture.

On Monday, Harshit could have made the headlines once again when he almost gave a similar send off to Delhi Capitals’ Abishek Porel after dismissing him in the seventh over.

Porel had struck him for back-to-back boundaries but Harshit had the last laugh eventually. Elated with the wicket, Harshit gestured with his hand towards the batter, showing him the way to the dugout.

However, he refrained himself from crossing the limits after recalling BCCI’s hefty punishment.

Coming to the game, DC opted to bat first after winning the toss and they never really got going as a batting unit. Skipper Rishabh had made 27 in 20 balls, with two fours and a six and looked to be the only batter with a decent contribution, until spinner Kuldeep Yadav (35* in 26 balls, with five fours and a six) helped the Capitals save face and score 153/9 in their 20 overs.

In the run-chase of 154, Phil Salt (68 in 33 balls, with seven fours and five sixes) took the game single-handedly from DC. Though DC got some wickets, skipper Shreyas Iyer (33 in 23 balls, with three fours and a six) and Venkatesh Iyer (26 in 23 balls, with three fours and a six) helped KKR seal a win with seven wickets and 21 balls in hand.

Bowlers need to find “innovative ways to execute deliveries with a touch of “anti-skill” to challenge the range-hitting batsmen in the ongoing IPL, reckoned Kolkata Knight Riders assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate. Punjab Kings successfully mounted the highest run-chase in T20s when they surpassed Kolkata Knight Riders imposing 261/6 with eight balls and eight wickets to spare in their IPL match at Eden Gardens on Friday.

“The game is almost unrecognisable from 10 years ago when you get past 160 you can almost pack your bag and feel you’re going to win the game. Now, you need 160 before the 13th over to have a chance to get a big score,” Doeschate said during the post-match media interaction.

Jonnny Bairstow led the chase with a scintillating 108 off just 48 deliveries after Impact Player Prabhsimran Singh set the tone with a blistering 54 off 20 balls.

After Prabhsimran’s exit, Shashank Singh provided a helping hand with an unbeaten 28-ball 68 in a match that witnessed a record 42 sixes in total.

The former Dutch allrounder, who was part of KKR’s 2014 title winning side, emphasised the need for bowlers to adopt unconventional tactics by bowling “anti-skill,” in order to be successful in the face of aggressive batting strategies.

“You want to bowl with anti-skill. I think, you know, short and wide really works, dragging guys wide and then going straight.” Citing the example of Sam Curran dismissing Phil Salt, he said: “You almost need to catch guys off-guard a little bit like Sam Curran caught Phil Salt off-guard. Set off-side field, he dragged him across and then fire one at leg stump.” “We have to come up with innovative ways. We have to keep changing literally ball by ball. I don’t think you can bowl two balls the same. I don’t think you can bowl bowlers back-to-back anymore unless they really have a grip on the game.

“It’s all in the batter’s favour. The challenge and the upside for bowlers to not punch back is really there,” he added.

The previous record chase in T20 was by South Africa against the West Indies in Centurion in 2023 when they overhauled 259 in 18.5 overs.

In IPL, both the record chases now have come against KKR in the space of 10 days at the same venue of Eden Gardens.

KKR had failed to defend 223/6 with Jos Buttler smashing a 55-ball century to pull off the heist on April 16,.

Dismissing any bowling concern, the KKR assistant coach said there was no point in crying about it as they would have to quickly recover.

“We’re not concerned, but bowling with the new ball and bowling seam, and everything in Kolkata is really tough, and we need to find a way to do better.

“There’s two ways you can look at it. You can step back and say, oh, it’s unfair, we’re bowling machines, or you can say, we are going to find a way and try new things and embrace the challenge “It’s going to be tough, we’re going to get panned all over the show, but you have to find innovative ways. We’ve got four weeks left, it’s going to be around for at least that long, there’s no point crying about it.

“I feel sorry for the bowlers, I think it’s gone even more towards that (batting) side, but those are the realities, and my way of going about it would be to find a way to land a punch back to the batter as quick as possible.” Giving an update on their premier pacer Mitchell Starc, Doeschate said the Aussie left-arm quick may need one or two games to return.

KKR next face Delhi Capitals here on Monday, before taking on Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants in two successive away games.

“As far as I know, he’s very close to being back, which will either be the next game or the game after,” he said.
