Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar has come under attack on social media after his contrasting analysis of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli‘s dismissals during the 2024 T20 World Cup match against Bangladesh left fans unhappy. Rohit Sharma had scored a quickfire 11-ball 23 to get India off to a flying start in the powerplay. On the other hand, Kohli played a more measured innings, scoring 37 off 28 balls. However, while Gavaskar praised the selflessness of Indian captain Rohit, he was harsher in his criticism about Virat’s dismissal. This led to a lot of unhappy reactions from fans of India’s No. 18.

Rohit got out trying to play a lofted shot off Shakib’s bowling. Prior to that, however, he had hit a six and a four in the same over. Gavaskar praised Rohit’s intent and aggressive approach.

“Someone who has hit 10 runs in two balls would not go for a big shot, but for Rohit Sharma, it is all about the team,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Rohit Sharma’s dismissal would have no doubt brought back memories about the 2023 World Cup Final to the minds of Indian fans, as even on that occasion, Rohit had gotten out after already scoring big in the same over.

After a lean patch to start the tournament, Kohli was well set on 37 against Bangladesh. However, a rare slower delivery from Bangladesh’s tearaway pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib saw Kohli get clean bowled.

“What was he thinking? Should have played inside out,” was Gavaskar’s reaction.

The difference in reaction from Gavaskar to Rohit and Kohli’s dismissals left several fans unhappy on social media. The former India batter was tagged “biased” and a “hypocrite” by fans on X.

“It’s not fans but the commentators like Sunil Gavaskar who create the difference between the fans and players,” said one user, criticising Gavaskar’s opinion.

Rohit and Kohli’s knocks, along with good contributions from Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant and Shivam Dube, took India to a daunting total of 196-5 in 20 overs. Chasing it, Bangladesh fell short by 50 runs.

India have now almost certainly sealed a semi-final spot at the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup.

As the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) vs Gujarat Titans (GT) clash was washed out, the 2-time champions were assured of a top-2 finish in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign. The result means KKR would be given two chances of sealing a spot in the final. As Knight Riders star Nitish Rana caught up with commentator Harsha Bhogle after his side’s match against Mumbai Indians, a hilarious conversation took place between the two. Rana, who hasn’t played much cricket this season due to injuries, gave an epic reply when informed by Harsha that he can’t take his eyes off his hands.

“Yeah, it’s fine now, but I can’t show it here on camera because it’s the middle finger (chuckles). I’m happy to be back in the team after missing 10 matches. It was a challenging period for me, as I’ve never sat out for so many games in the IPL. I’m grateful to the KKR management for their faith in me and their belief that I can still make an impact in the game,” Rana told Bhogle.

This season, Rana has faced a frustrating period on the sidelines after injuring himself in the first game of the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The all-rounder missed 10 games in a row, with youngster Angrish Raghuvanshi taking his place in the side and delivering goods with the bat.

The left-handed batter made his comeback against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Saturday (May 11) in Kolkata and scored 33 runs in 23 balls.

As for the match against GT, rain played spoilsport, forcing the entire match to be abandoned without a ball being bowled. As points were shared, KKR strengthened their position at the top of the points table while Gujarat Titans were officially knocked out from the playoffs race.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) unearthed another gem in the form of Angkrish Raghuvanshi in the 2024 campaign as Kolkata Knight Riders hammered Delhi Capitals by 106 runs on Wednesday.  The 18-year-old batter played a 54-run knock from 27 balls at a strike rate of 200. He smashed 5 fours and 3 sixes. While Raghuvanshi’s innings was full of boundaries, it was his chat with commentator Harsha Bhogle during the mid-innings break that entertained fans too.

With an innocent smile on his face, Raghuvanshi began the talk by expressing how excited he was to be speaking to Harsha, who also responded saying it was exciting for him to watch the young KKR star bat.

“I just wanted to watch the ball and react. I had worked in the nets for the last few weeks, just had fun watching Sunil play. Having watched the SRH match, nothing’s a winning score, we’ll have to bowl well. Bowl in the right channels and force them into mistakes,” Raghuvanshi said after the game. But, the conversation wasn’t as plain and simple as the young batter found himself in the spotlight after a fiery half-century.

Raghuvanshi was also sent by the KKR management to speak to the media in the post-match press conference. There, he said that it was “fun” to play the blistering knock against Delhi Capitals.

He added that the Kolkata-based franchise bagged two points against Delhi Capitals, and that’s what matters.

“It was fun. Came on to the bat pretty nicely… It’s nice to get into the tournament with a fifty. But more importantly, three wins in three games. The team is thinking about the next game. It’s not personal it’s just how we can win games for our team. We got the two points, that’s all that matters,” Raghuvanshi said at the post-match press conference.

Summarizing the match, KKR’s target of 273 turned out to be too much for DC as they gave in to pressure and ended up suffering a 106-run defeat.

The pace duo of Mitchell Starc and Vaibhav Arora bagged two wickets each to reduce DC to 33/4 in the powerplay.

These early blows derailed DC’s approach to chasing down the massive total which got more challenging with each delivery.
