A heartwarming video of Virat Kohli meeting the families of Harpreet Brar and Arshdeep Singh is going viral on social media. The meeting took place after Punjab Kings’ IPL 2024 game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Dharamsala on May 9. It was a do-or-die game for both sides with PBKS ending on the losing side. The result did not go in favour of the Punjab Kings and they were thus knocked out of the playoff race. However, off the field, Kohli made the day for PBKS stars Arshdeep and Harpreet by taking his time out to meet their families.

Punjab Kings shared the video on social media on Friday with fans reacting to the sweet video in huge numbers.

Watch it here:

The loss to RCB eliminated PBKS and saw the side scripting an unwanted record in IPL history. PBKS became the first-ever team in the tournament to fail to qualify for IPL playoffs in 10 consecutive editions. The side last entered the playoff in 2014 edition where they finished as runners-up after losing to Kolkata Knight Riders in the final.

“A lot of positive signs throughout the season, but not enough to get over the line, unfortunately. We knew that we had the best side for the rest of the tournament and feel gutted for the team. Got to keep our heads up, keep learning and keep becoming better,” said PBKS stand-in skipper Sam Curran after the defeat to RCB.

“Really enjoyed leading a great bunch of guys, would have loved a few more wins. We had some highs, and some record run-chases as well. Lots of disappointment and apologize to the fans, we will keep fighting. The ups and downs have been quite tough, but you gotta keep learning and keep working hard,” he added.

Harpreet Brar of Punjab Kings celebrating the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane of Chennai Super Kings during match the IPL match between CSK and PBKS held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on May 01, 2024.

Punjab Kings left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar opened up about the areas he tries to aim for while bowling against some of the best hitters of the tournament in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

After CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane fended off PBKS bowlers in the powerplay, Harpreet bowled the ninth over and changed the complexion of the game in two deliveries.

In the ninth over, he sent Rahane back to the dressing room, and on the next delivery, he trapped in-form batter Shivam Dube right in front of the stumps. Rahul Chahar backed him up on the other end by making CSK batters toil hard for each run.

Harpreet was adjudged Man of the Match for his game-changing spell that opened the floodgates and laid the foundation for Punjab’s triumph.

“It was a good wicket to bowl on, and even Rahul bowled really well. I have been playing for 6 years, so my confidence has been pretty high. Now bowling to these legends of the game feels normal, I just bowl to my strengths. To be honest, I don’t think wickets, my aim is only to bowl lots of dot balls and dot balls create the wickets. When there is spin in the wicket, the bowlers’ confidence goes up and it is a bit helpful,” Harpreet said after the game.

Both spinners combined to produce an influential spell of 4/33 in 8 overs. Overall, Harpreet has six scalps to his name in 10 matches at an economy of 7.21.

Harpreet’s efforts played a major role as PBKS clinched their fifth win at Chepauk against CSK in the IPL. They went level with five-time champion Mumbai Indians for the most number of wins against CSK at Chepauk in the cash-rich league.

Coming to the match, the vibrant yellow wave in the stands of Chepauk was reduced to silence after PBKS effortlessly chased down 163 with more than two overs to spare.

Stand-in skipper Sam Curran’s decision to put CSK to bat turned out to be the ideal one as the dew factor kicked in to become a hindrance for CSK bowlers in the second half of the match.

Ruturaj Gaikwad led from the front and scored 62 off 48 deliveries and MS Dhoni provided the finishing touches at the death to power CSK to an unlikely 162/7.

In reply, PBKS batters hardly broke a sweat while chasing 163. Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw forged a 64-run stand to completely shift the momentum in their favour.

Curran and Shashank Singh applied the finishing touches to seal a 7-wicket win for PBKS.

Punjab Kings mounted a pragmatic chase to consign Chennai Super Kings to a demoralising seven-wicket defeat at their own den in their IPL match at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday. Punjab rode on quick 40s by Jonny Bairstow (46, 30b, 7×4, 1×6) and Rilee Rossouw (43, 23b, 5×4, 2×6) to move past Chennai’s modest 162 for seven, which was built around skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad’s solid 62 (48b, 5×4, 2×6). The win took PBKS to seventh place on the points table with eight points, while CSK stayed on fourth with 10 points.

The Super Kings’ defence of 163 faced multiple barricades as their spinners – Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja – were rendered ineffective because of dew and pacer Deepak Chahar walked off the field with a niggle after bowling just two balls.

But that should not take the sheen out of PBKS’ effort with the bat on the night.

After the early departure of opener Prabhsimran Singh, who played two convincing strokes, Bairstow and Rossouw kept the visitors in the hunt with a handy 64-run alliance as they also went past 50 in the Power Play segment.

Bairstow treated spinners Jadeja and Moeen with disdain taking three boundaries and a six off them. In stark contrast to their Punjab counterparts, the CSK spinners gave away 44 runs in five overs without any return.

But Bairstow’s attempt to be too cheeky ended his stay. The England batter went for a cute ramp shot off Shivam Dube, but could only manage to feather it to MS Dhoni behind the stumps.

However, Rossouw and Shashank Singh (25 not out, 26b) made 44 runs in quick time as PBKS remained ahead in the game.

Rossouw, who pummelled Dube and Thakur for a six each, had a brilliant chance to make a fifty. But his attempt to smash Thakur’s low full-toss out of ground resulted in his stumps getting rearranged.

But those were minor irritants in an otherwise polished effort as Shashank and skipper Sam Curran (26 not out, 20b) knocked off the remaining runs without much fuss during their unbroken 50-run alliance.

Earlier, Gaikwad braved a sluggish Chepauk pitch to make a solid fifty, but CSK struggled massively against Punjab spinners – Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar.

Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane (29, 24b) added 61 runs for the opening wicket but they consumed 49 balls.

There were flashes of intent too. Gaikwad played a fine upper cut off pacer Arshdeep Singh for a boundary and Rahane creamed three fours in a row off Curran, including a lovely cover drive.

The slide of CSK began once PBKS brought their spinners on immediately after the Power Play that yielded a satisfactory 55 runs.

Rahane tried to slog sweep Brar but his skier ended in the hands of Rossouw in the deep.

But the left-arm spinner inflicted a bigger blow in the next delivery, trapping Dube, who was named in India’s T20 World Cup squad, leg before for a first-ball duck.

Dube, promoted to No. 3 to counter spin, failed to connect an almighty heave off a fuller ball on the middle-stump by Brar, and he had to walk back despite seeking help from DRS.

In the next over, leg-spinner Chahar got rid of Ravindra Jadeja, who was deceived by a delivery that turned into him a whisker to beat his prod.

It was a total shutdown for CSK between sixth and 10th over, losing three wickets for just 16 runs.

For a team that generally bosses the middle passage between the seventh and 15th over making runs at a rate of 10.6, the CSK was a shadow of their marauding self, managing just 47 runs against PBKS.

A big chunk of credit should go to two Punjab spinners — Brar and Chahar — who exploited a slow track to the hilt to return with combined figures of 33 in eight overs for four wickets.

They also did not concede a single boundary in their spell.

Gaikwad did his best to bring CSK back into the match, using his wide array of shots against pacers Harshal Patel and Curran, and reached his fifty in 44 balls.

The right-hander brought up his third fifty in a row in this IPL with a six off Curran over long-on as they took 20 runs in that over. CSK made 60 runs in the last five overs.

Virat Kohli poked fun at Shikhar Dhawan during RCB vs PBKS match© X (Twitter)

The ‘comeback man’ Virat Kohli gave a fine example of his credentials in the shortest format of the game, scoring a 77-run knock against Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match on Monday. Kohli wasn’t just prolific with the bat but also entertained everyone with his on-field antics. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) man was involved in a cheeky banter with Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shikhar Dhawan. Kohli’s comments were caught on the stump mic while he was batting for the Bengaluru franchise.

“Senti kyun ho raha hai, kya ho gaya (why are you getting sentimental, what happened?”, Virat could be heard saying through the stump mic. The comments seemed to have been directed towards Dhawan who was fielding in the covers region.

It all happened during an over from PBKS spinner Harpreet Brar. It isn’t yet known what the context of Virat’s comment was. Here’s the video:

After the match, Shikhar Dhawan admitted that it was Virat Kohli’s dropped catch that cost his team the match.

“It was a good game, we brought the game back, and again we lost it. We scored 10-15 runs less, in the first six overs I played a bit slow. Those 10-15 runs cost us and the dropped catch as well. I am happy with my runs but I thought I could have played a bit more fast in the first six overs, that’s the only thing I felt. We lost wickets as well, we lost two wickets continuously and that put pressure on us.”

In the second innings, on the second ball of the first over, England star Jonny Bairstow dropped Kohli’s catch while the former RCB skipper hadn’t opened his account. The RCB superstar then went on to score 77 runs in just 49 deliveries, with the help of eleven fours and two maximums.

“Virat scored 70-odd runs and we dropped a catch of the class player, we paid the price. If we had taken that catch, the momentum would have come from the second ball. But we lost the momentum over there and then we paid the price for that,” he added.

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) fought their hearts out but went down by four wickets against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Monday. RCB restricted the Punjab Kings to 176/6 before chasing down their target in 19.2 overs. However, Punjab Kings’ off-spinner Harpreet Brar shone on the night with magnificent bowling figures of 2/13. Speaking about his performance, Brar said as per the press release by PBKS, “I tried to dry up the runs as much as possible and I picked up two wickets in the process as well. I was trying to bowl as many dot balls as possible to create pressure on the batters. The dot balls give you wickets in the end.”

Brar further expressed that the bowlers got a bit of help from the wicket at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, “It’s all about bowling on the right lengths in T20 cricket. I look to bowl a little far away from the batters’ hitting arc. We got a bit of help from the wicket in Bengaluru and it was not easy to strike the ball.”

The off-spinner further added, “We assessed the wicket well while we were batting and we found out that it was better to bowl on the stumps on that pitch. I just looked to focus on bowling at good lines and lengths during the game.”

The Punjab Kings will be next in action when they take on the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Lucknow on Saturday.
