Indian men’s hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh is desperate to reclaim the gold medal in the upcoming Paris Olympics in his bid to give a fitting tribute to the country and stalwarts of the game. Eight-time Olympic champions India won an Olympic medal, a bronze, after 41 years in the Tokyo Olympics to revive the golden days of the sport in the country, and come 2024 Paris, the Harmanpreet-led side is chasing nothing less than a gold.

“We are giving our all to elevate our history and legacy. Winning the gold will be a tribute to India and our seniors,” the ace drag-flicker said in an exclusive feature on JioCinema’s ‘The Dreamers.’ Harmanpreet’s predecessor Manpreet Singh, under whose leadership India bagged the historic bronze in Tokyo, echoed similar sentiments.

“Seeing our flag on the right, I felt we could strive harder to place it at the centre next time, with our anthem playing. This marks the beginning of our renewed journey,” he said.

Veteran India goalkeeper PR Sreejesh highlighted the relentless drive and collective spirit of the team.

“Someone somewhere is training to beat you. That thought pushes me out of my comfort zone. Every time I train, I am driven by the desire not to disappoint the 1.4 billion people of our country.

“There was a time when Indian hockey relied on individual brilliance, but now we play as a cohesive unit, and that transformation has been key to our success on the international stage,” Sreejesh said.

India’s chief coach Craig Fulton broke down the team’s mentality, philosophy, and strategy, which helps them go toe-to-toe with some of the best sides in the world. “There isn’t a team that this Indian team hasn’t beaten. The question you could also be asking is — what do the other teams have to do to beat India? “The whole philosophy in my mind is to defend, to counter, and to win – having a team that can defend against the best teams in the world but then counterattack from anywhere. And that’s in the DNA of this Indian team,” the South African said.

As 75 days are left for the commencement of the Paris 2024 Olympics where the Indian men’s Hockey team will take the field at the Yves-du-Manior Stadium in quest to end 44-year gold medal drought, skipper Harmanpreet Singh has said the team entered “last stages of an intense training block” in their preparation for the marque event. India have to overcome the reigning Olympic Champions Belgium (World No. 2), Australia (World No. 3), Argentina (World No. 7), New Zealand (World No. 10), and Ireland (World No. 11) in Pool B to secure a top-four finish in the pool to progress to the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Pool A comprises the world’s top-ranked team, the Netherlands, alongside Germany, Great Britain, Spain, South Africa, and hosts France, setting the stage for an intense battle in the 12-team men’s hockey tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

India will begin their campaign on July 27 against New Zealand, followed by a match against Argentina on July 29 before facing Ireland and Belgium on July 30 and August 1. They will play their last group stage game against Australia on August 2.

“We are in the last stages of an intense training block right now. The team has worked on the areas we felt needed attention after the Tour of Australia. Soon, we will head to Europe to play some essential matches in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24 to test ourselves against some tough opponents like Argentina, Belgium, Germa

“The chemistry in the squad continues to grow and with only 75 days left for the Paris 2024 Olympics we are working to be in the best shape possible,” said Harmanpreet.

Meanwhile, vice-captain Hardik Singh expressed his excitement for the Paris 2024 Olympics saying, “The team is leaving no stone unturned in our endeavour to change the colour of our previous medal and clinch Gold at the Olympics this time. We have players like PR Sreejesh and Manpreet Singh who could be playing their fourth Olympics along with quite a few players who could be playing their third Olympics, including our Captain.

“Their experience has been instrumental in moulding some of the younger players we have in the squad right now. Only 75 days remain for the Paris 2024 Olympics and we cannot wait to begin our Olympic journey.”

India has a rich history in hockey at the Olympics. They won their first Gold Medal after beating the Netherlands 3-0 in the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam and went on to dominate, winning Gold Medals in the 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964, and 1980 Olympics.

In addition to their 8 Gold Medals, India claimed a silver medal in 1960 and 3 bronze medals in 1968, 1972, and the previous Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020, making them the most successful men’s hockey team in the Olympics with 12 Medals.

‘Honoured To Be Compared With Dhoni But…’: Men’s Hockey Captain Harmanpreet Singh’s Honest Admission https://artifex.news/honoured-to-be-compared-with-dhoni-but-im-not-as-calm-as-him-mens-hockey-captain-harmanpreet-4467175/ Tue, 10 Oct 2023 10:35:02 +0000 https://artifex.news/honoured-to-be-compared-with-dhoni-but-im-not-as-calm-as-him-mens-hockey-captain-harmanpreet-4467175/ Read More “‘Honoured To Be Compared With Dhoni But…’: Men’s Hockey Captain Harmanpreet Singh’s Honest Admission” »

Asian Games-winning Indian men’s hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh doesn’t fancy comparisons with the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni and feels he is not as calm on the ground like the cricket legend. Harmanpreet, who led the team from the front and returned as the top scorer in the Asian Games with 13 goals, has been compared to Dhoni by hockey great Dhanraj Pillay but the star drag-flicker begs to differ. “On ground, I am never calm. I am aggressive unlike Dhoni but off the field, I try to remain as calm as possible,” Harmanpreet said during a visit to PTI headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Dhoni, who led India to the 2011 ODI World Cup title, is known as ‘Captain Cool’ for his calm demeanour during pressure situations.

Harmanpreet feels aggressiveness on the hockey turf comes to him naturally but he is honoured to have been compared with Dhoni.

“Aggressiveness is must in my game but I am honoured to have been compared with the great Dhoni. But I don’t feel I that calm on the pitch.” The ticket to Paris Olympic secured, the monkey is off the back of the India men’s hockey team and a relieved Harmanpreet has now trained his eyes on bettering the colour of the medal they won in Tokyo in next year’s Paris Games.

A dominant India thrashed Japan 5-1 in the final to clinch their fourth Asian Games gold medal in Hangzhou on last Friday, thereby directly qualifying for Paris Olympics.

With the pressure of qualification off its back, Harmanpreet said the team can focus on preparations for next year’s quadrennial extravaganza “As a player, you are never satisfied, you know your dream. If you win a gold medal, next time you will again try to repeat the feat. That is precisely on our mind,” “Last time we experienced the pressure of not qualifying directly for the Olympics. Now our mind is clear and we know we have qualified. Now we have time to prepare for the Olympics without thinking about qualification and give our best shot at bettering our Tokyo performance.” India won a historic Olympic bronze in Tokyo, their first podium finish in 41 years since the gold medal in Moscow, back in 1980.

Harmanpreet is happy with the bonding between players and progress of Indian hockey, saying competition for places augurs well for the game.

“The good thing about team is we have open conversations. There is plenty of competition in the camp and every player in the core group is good. A player, who is not selected also inspires and says if you have been given the responsibility, so go and perform. They don’t think they are dropped although it is there in the back of the mind.

“All the players are aggressive, fight against each other, support each other because most of the time, we stay together in camps away from our families. We share everything with each other,” he said. Harmanpreet feels their feats will motivate youngsters to pick up the hockey stick. “We know youngsters are looking up to us, they are picking up hockey sticks after being inspired by our feats and it is our responsibility to keep on performing and motivating the next generation. We just want to give our best in every match, in every tournament.” Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey, who also visited PTI headquarters, along with Harmanpreet, veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, women’s team captain Savita Punia ad defender Sushila Chanu, the presence of quality drag-flickers has made India a potent force in world hockey.

“This time we got to see consistent performance from the team. We were never under pressure in any match. Against Korea in the semifinal, we were little taken by shock but the players stood up and delivered,” Tirkey said.

“In the past, we had good teams, quality players but what we lacked is a drag-flicker. Pakistan that time had Sohail Abbas but now we have quality drag-flickers in Harmanpreet, Amit Rohidas, Varun Kumar. We didn’t get quality drag-flickers in our time.”
