An adorable video of Hardik Pandya is going viral on social media. In the clip that has surfaced online, Hardik is in a video call with a local cricket selector from his childhood. The India all-rounder could be seen thanking the selector for providing him match fee of Rs 400 during the formation of his career. Hardik, who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm medium pace, entered the cricketing arena from a humble background. He had to deal with financial struggles before his talent and hard work hogged limelight. Hardik made his IPL debut in 2015 and in less than a month, he played his maiden India game.

Watch the video here:

Hardik continued his rich vein of form by smashing five sixes and scoring 28 runs in an over bowled by left-arm spinner Parvez Sultan as Baroda crushed Tripura by seven wickets in a Group B game of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Friday.

Chasing a meagre target of 110, Baroda rode on Hardik’s 47 off 23 balls to complete the task in just 11.2 overs, after elder brother Krunal Pandya did well with the new ball to finish with figures of 2/22.

The highlight for the sparse crowd was the entertainment provided by Hardik as he launched into Sultan, hitting him for three sixes between long-off and extra cover region and another two in the cow corner.

Hardik has had a fantastic Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament so far with contributions in all four wins for Baroda. His sequence of scores read 74 not out, 41 not out, 69 and 47, and he has also picked up a couple of wickets along the way.

The player will be seen leading five-time champions Mumbai Indians once again, in the upcoming India Premier League season. Hardik was retained by MI for Rs. 16.35 crore ahead of the mega auction.

Hardik Pandya‘s skill sets are equivalent to premier England all-rounder and captain Ben Stokes but the mercurial Indian needs to show more consistency, reckoned former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris. Recently, Suryakumar Yadav was preferred over Pandya as India’s captain in T20Is for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, as chief selector Ajit Agarkar “wanted someone who was likely to be available more often.” “This champion all-rounder (Pandya) has got as many skills as anyone. He’s probably in a similar ability-zone as someone like Ben Stokes. He’s got much more talent than that (his recent performances),” Styris told PTI Videos in an interview.

Styris did not have any doubt over Pandya’s talent but the Kiwi wanted him to infuse more consistency into his performances.

“He is a phenomenally skilled cricketer. But he hasn’t quite shown it yet as consistently enough for my liking. So, just let him get out there and just say, you’ve got to lead us now by your performance,” he said.

“I think the skills that Indian fans need to see from him now is being available all the time on the field and then delivering those performances with both bat and ball.” For that Styris wanted Pandya to remain in the peak fitness zone more often than not.

“I want to see him get his body right and be that dominant all-rounder that we know. Bowling is really hard work and he is someone who’s got all the skills and talent.

“I want to see him be that genuine all-rounder and as someone whom you can rely on with both bat and ball, not just the odd over here with the ball and come in with a cameo,” said Styris.

Styris said left all-rounder Axar Patel would play a crucial role in India’s T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka.

“I’m a huge fan of Axar Patel. I picked him in my World Cup squad (of India) during the IPL. He’s one of those players who always gets in the fight, always gets in the contest.

“His bad games are pretty good and you can rely on him. That’s why we often see him floating up and down the order.

“Throughout the IPL, we wanted Axar to move up the batting order for Delhi (Capitals) because their top order wasn’t going that well. It was pleasing that he did get that opportunity with India,” he added.

Styris also wanted to see a larger role for Rinku Singh, who failed to make it to India’s 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup.

“I would still like to see Rinku come in first. The way he’s performed for India, he hasn’t done anything wrong. Just continue to let him do that role. But then if there’s another opportunity, Axar certainly would be a floater in my team,” he said.

The former all-rounder lauded Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja for timing their retirement from T20Is to perfection.

“I think it was the perfect time for those three to step away. It’s a real opportunity for India to give some experience to the next generation of players.” Styris said the young Indian cricketers are immensely talented as they have shown in the IPL.

“They won’t have those senior guys around to lean on. But the one thing that we can take away from the IPL is the next wave of Indian batsmen are talented.

“So, I love the opportunity this (retirement of veterans) is presenting to some of the younger players,” he concluded.

The firebrand Gautam Gambhir announced his arrival as India’s head coach by successfully ensuring the ascension of Suryakumar Yadav as the new T20 captain in place of Hardik Pandya, who seemed primed for the leadership role after Rohit Sharma‘s international retirement from the format. India’s six-match white-ball series against Sri Lanka isn’t exactly a run-of-the-mill bilateral engagement for Gambhir, whose mind seems to have aligned with chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar on the issue of captaincy. Both men decided unanimously to make Suryakumar the skipper keeping in mind the next T20 World Cup to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka in 2026.

The series against Sri Lanka is an important precursor to that build-up.

The first T20 International will be held on July 27, followed by games on July 28 and 30. All the ties will be played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

The ODIs will be held on August 2, 4 and 7 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

It was under captain Gambhir, that Indian cricket fans took note of Suryakumar, popular as ‘SKY’, an indulgent acronym coined by the then Kolkata Knight Riders skipper, who would regularly praise the youngster for performing the finisher’s role to perfection.

It is understood that Pandya, the vice-captain of the T20 World Cup-winning squad, who bowled the historic last over in the final against South Africa, was intimated about the decision on Tuesday by both Agarkar and Gambhir about the hard call.

Pandya was also the vice-captain in the 50-over World Cup last year before his injury. With Shubman Gill being appointed deputy in both formats, it is now clear that the selection committee and Gambhir, are keen to look beyond Pandya as a leadership option.

What worked against Pandya was his frequent injury breakdowns. He played only 46 out of the 79 T20I games from Jan 1, 2022. In this period, Suryakumar missed only a few games and that too due to sports hernia surgery.

He led India to a 4-1 win over Australia in a T20I series last November and followed it up with a 1-1 draw in South Africa.

Pandya is nonetheless there in the T20 squad and has opted out of ODIs due to personal reasons.

Former India pacer S Sreesanth on Friday backed Hardik Pandya’s selection in the T20 World Cup squad, saying the all-rounder’s presence alongside Virat Kohli will make for a “great combination” when chasing tricky totals. The out-of-form Pandya’s inclusion in the 15-member India squad raised eyebrows but the selectors went by his past record and his ability to quickly change the complexion of a game with both bat and ball. If his selection in the squad was not enough, many were surprised by his appointment as vice-captain for the ICC showpiece in the USA and the West Indies.

But Sreesanth, one of India’s best outswing bowlers in the post-Kapil Dev era, supported the move.

“We have seen what he can do on the field minus this year’s IPL. The way he’s been batting and the way he’s been bowling, for the country, he even led the country in one series and we won,” Sreesanth remarked during a discussion on Star Sports.

“It was asked to Rohit about that and he said sometimes I’m the captain and sometimes I’m not. But that doesn’t change the team’s aura and atmosphere.

“So, it’s one good thing that Hardik Pandya comes in and bats, especially when he’s chasing and Virat is on the other side, I think the combination they create is great.”

Pandya’s last appearance for India came during the ODI World Cup match against Bangladesh in October 2023.

He recovered from an ankle injury well in time ahead of the IPL 2024 and was named as the captain of five-time champions Mumbai Indians in place of Rohit Sharma — a move that attracted a lot of criticism.

Speaking about Pandya’s bowling, Sreesanth said, “Hardik can take the new ball or the old ball, especially against Pakistan, but it’s not only against Pakistan, we are going to play a lot of different teams.

“So, it’s an opportunity for Hardik to forget what he’s done in this IPL and maybe, you never know, there are a few matches left and he may just come up.”

Former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody also supported Pandya’s selection in the Rohit-led team, saying he currently stands head and shoulders above other contenders.

“Name me three other people who can do what Hardik Pandya is doing. That’s the bottom line. That skill of being a genuine all-rounder who can bat in your top six and potentially bowl four overs for you is very rare in India at the moment,” Moody said.

“Yes, there are a few others that play domestic cricket and are okay, but not in international cricket, which is of a different standard. So, I think he stands head and shoulders above anyone who is competing for that particular role.

“I think (chief selector) Ajit Agarkar has recognised that that is the case and we have to give him a longer rope with regards to his recovery, with regards to his form, and everything else, because he is a very precious commodity in this country,” Moody added.

The Aussie also said Shivam Dube should bowl a lot at training so that he is ready for the job when required during a match. Moody described his selection as a “smart move”.

“I’d be incredibly surprised if Dubey hasn’t been doing his bowling workloads, which is basically, not bowling out in the middle in competition but bowling at practice and bowling in pre-games, getting his number of balls up per week to make sure that his body is conditioned to bowling.

“Even though he might not have to bowl in match situation, but he’s got the bowling, so it’s not like he hasn’t bowled for two months and then suddenly called upon to bowl in a World Cup tournament.

“So, he’ll be up and ready physically for the opportunity. So, to me Shivam Dubey is a smart pick,” Moody said.

Former Indian cricketer Pragyan Ojha wants Hardik Pandya to step up and play the role of a “true leader”. Hardik was named as the vice-captain of India’s 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup despite the clouds of criticism looming over him. Ojha showed his faith in Hardik’s leadership skills and his all-round abilities, emphasising the importance of being mentally prepared to take charge if fate demanded. “I expect him to play like a leader because he is next in command. If something happens to Rohit, we don’t want that, if anything happens, he (Hardik) will be leading the side, so he has to be prepared, he has to take that responsibility when he is batting,” Ojha said to Jio Cinema.

The last time Hardik played for India was in the October 2023 ODI World Cup match against Bangladesh. Before the Indian Premier League 2024, he made a full recovery from an ankle ailment and was named captain of the five-time champions Mumbai Indians, replacing Rohit.

This invited a lot of social media criticism, which somewhere damaged the confidence of the all-rounder. He has managed to score 197 runs at an average of 150.38 in 10 games in the 2024 season so far. Only six wickets have been claimed by the all-rounder at an economy rate of 11.0.

Ojha, acknowledging Hardik’s significance in the Indian setup, lauded his ability to provide balance to the team. Despite the IPL ordeal, Hardik’s place in the T20 World Cup squad was never in doubt. His versatility as an all-rounder offered India the flexibility they needed, a fact not lost on selectors or fans.

“For me, he is someone who will create that balance for the side. Every time we talk about Indian team selection, Hardik’s name always comes in. He creates that balance, he will give you that cushion. That you can have an extra batter or a bowler, wherever he is needed. That’s what we want him to do, to be mentally ready for the World Cup and just forget what is happening in the IPL and focus on the World Cup, that is more important,” Ojha added.

With Mumbai Indians languishing at the bottom of the points table with just three wins in ten games, Hardik faced relentless scrutiny and his captaincy came under fire. He was not only booed by the crowds across venues but was also criticised by the experts for his captaincy.

Back in Mumbai Indians colours, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya on Friday vowed to play a brand of cricket which no one will forget as he leads the five-time champions this IPL season. Pandya was traded by MI from Gujarat Titans ahead of the upcoming season. He made his IPL debut with MI in 2015 and won four titles with the side before joining GT in 2022. He lead GT to a title win in the same season. “The feeling of wearing this colour is very special for me. Journey started here, coming back home and playing is always going to be special,” said Pandya, who replaces Rohit Sharma as captain, in a video posted by the franchise on social media.

“We will make sure we will play a brand of cricket which all will be proud of and at the same point of time it’s going to be a ride no one will forget.” Pandya was welcomed back with open arms by MI head coach Mark Boucher, who backed him to do well.

“He (Pandya) certainly knows the changing room better than what I do. It’s sort of homecoming for couple of people.

“He has fitted in really well and is excited for the season. We look forward to having him back and winning some games for Mumbai Indians again,” told Boucher in another MI video.

“At the start of each season, everyone is very excited. There’s a couple of new faces around, so there’s a little bit of nerves as well. We would like building up to the start of the season.” MI will open their IPL campaign against GT in Ahmedabad on March 24.
