Mohamed Salah helped maintain Liverpool’s perfect record in the Champions League on Tuesday while holders Real Madrid bounced back from their defeat at Anfield to topple in-form Italians Atalanta. Elsewhere, struggling Paris Saint-Germain gained a vital win at Salzburg, while Bayer Leverkusen edged Inter Milan to move second. Aston Villa, in their first appearance in the continent’s elite club competition for 41 years, maintained their bright progress beating Leipzig 3-2 to sit third. The first eight teams qualify directly for the last 16 with those placed ninth to 24 entering a play-off round.

In Spain, Salah’s 63rd-minute penalty proved decisive against dogged debutants Girona to extend the Premier League leaders’ record to six from six in the revamped format of Europe’s flagship club competition.

Under new coach Arne Slot Liverpool are virtually assured a place in the last 16.

“If you ask me about all six games, I’m really pleased with all the results… (but) I’m far from pleased about the performance tonight,” Slot told reporters in Girona.

“(We had) hardly any control at all over the game, maybe the second half was a bit better but then I’m trying to be positive.”

Salah sent Paulo Gazzaniga the wrong way to net his 50th Champions League goal, pulling the Egyptian level with Filippo Inzaghi as the 10th highest goalscorer of all-time in the competition.

The winger is out of contract at the end of the season but his 16 goals across all competitions have been essential in Liverpool’s superb first half of the season.

While Liverpool are sitting pretty with two league phase rounds to come early next year, kings of Europe Real Madrid, beaten 2-0 by Liverpool last time out, have work to do to ensure their progress into the knockout phase.

Kylian Mbappe gave Real a 10th minute lead before hobbling off injured in Atalanta, his strike was cancelled out by Charles de Ketelaere’s penalty in first-half additional time.

Settle nerves

Real coach Carlo Ancelotti started Vinicius Junior for the first time since a hamstring problem last month. The Brazilian had Real back on top before the hour, with Jude Bellingham also on the scoresheet for a 3-2 win over the Serie a leaders.

The hard-fought victory moved Real up to 18th on nine points and will have helped to settle any nerves at the 15-time European champions ahead of games against Salzburg and Brest in January.

PSG put the wheels back on their stuttering campaign with a much needed 3-0 defeat on the road at Salzburg.

The French champions went into this encounter in 25th with just four points and three goals scored after five matches.

They approach their last two league outings in provisional 24th – the final berth for the play-offs ahead of Wednesday’s games.

Bayern swept aside Ukraine side Shakhtar Donetsk in Gelsenkirchen 5-1. Fellow Bundesliga giants Leverkusen became the first team to score against Inter in this year’s competition in a 1-0 win that lifted them five points adrift of Liverpool at the top of the league.

Another noteworthy performance on matchday six came on the Brittany coast where modest French Ligue 1 outfit Brest dished out a 1-0 defeat to former European champions PSV Eindhoven.

It left the Atlantic port city club flying high in fifth in their first ever appearance at European football’s high table.

In other games, Celtic and Dinamo Zagreb remained in contention for the knockout round after an uninspiring 0-0 draw and Club Brugge beat Sporting 2-1.

Headline matches on Wednesday include Manchester city at Juventus, and Barcelona at Borussia Dortmund.

Liverpool coach Arne Slot warned Monday that Champions League opponents Girona are stronger than their results in the competition so far indicate. The Premier League leaders are top of the European standings with a 100 percent record and on Tuesday face a Girona side down in 30th, with four defeats in five matches. However, Slot said he had been watching Girona for a while, as they ran Real Madrid close for the Spanish title last season, and said the Champions League debutants’ results do not reflect their quality.

“I think it’s really special what they’ve done here, particularly last season but even this season,” Slot told a news conference.

“That they were competing for the league title with this budget probably (shows) how good of a manager Michel is.

“Even this season I think they do better than the results might look, especially in the Champions League — I’ve seen almost every game and apart from the PSV game… they were unlucky in every game.”

Girona fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in their first ever Champions League clash and then lost 3-2 at Slot’s former club Feyenoord.

The Catalan club beat Slovan Bratislava but then lost to PSV and Sturm Graz, leaving them on the brink of elimination.

Slot said he would be able to use his strongest side after Liverpool’s Premier League derby clash with Everton at the weekend was called off because of a dangerous storm.

“Now everybody is really fit because we skipped the game on Saturday so there is no reason to rotate,” said Slot.

“We will start like all the other (European) games with a really good team tomorrow.”

The Dutch coach confirmed goalkeeper Alisson Becker was fit to play after around two months out injured.

Slot said he believed while finishing in the top eight of the group would help his team avoid an extra two fixtures in the competition, it would not provide an advantage in the Premier League against their title rivals.

“If we end up in the top eight, I assume that these clubs… end up in the top eight as well,” he added.

“So Arsenal, I think 95 percent sure, City have to do a bit more maybe, but they are able to win three times in a row as well, so then they will be in the top eight.”

Girona host Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday knowing the clash offers a chance to lay a glove on a top side before their European dream peters out. “We have reached a place which was a dream for us, a dream that we must all enjoy,” said coach Michel Sanchez ahead of their debut in the competition, but the Catalan minnows have quickly been brought crashing down to earth. Down in 30th in the group table with four defeats from their opening five games and one win, it has become apparent that elite level European football may be a bridge too far for Girona at present.

With the exception of their narrow opening 1-0 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain, the three matches remaining for Girona are arguably their hardest.

After six-time winners Liverpool’s visit they travel to Italy to face AC Milan and then host Arsenal in their last group match.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool top both the English Premier League and Champions League tables and have beaten English champions Manchester City and Spanish champions Real Madrid in recent weeks. The latter was a fifth Champions League triumph from five games.

Last season Girona ran Madrid close in the La Liga title race until the final stages of the season when they fell away.

In what was just their fourth season in the Spanish top flight, Sanchez’s side thrilled with their brilliant football and twice beat then title-holders Barcelona.

However, they were twice crushed by Madrid, 3-0 at home and 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu, in defeats which showed they were struggling to compete against the cream of the crop, even before severe summer sales set them back.

Girona lost target man Artem Dovbyk, playmaker Aleix Garcia and winger Savinho among other starters, forcing Sanchez to rebuild.

It took time for new arrivals including Bryan Gil, Abel Ruiz, and Donny van de Beek to gel and the team has also suffered greatly with injuries.

Competing on two fronts instead of just in La Liga has stretched resources, with a whole XI of players sidelined a few weeks ago.

‘Can’t let these goals in’

Girona have found some form in recent weeks, but it seems certain to be too little, too late to save their Champions League campaign.

A run of four matches unbeaten in La Liga was brought to an end by Real Madrid on Saturday with a comfortable 3-0 victory.

“We have to be stronger in both areas… we can’t let in these goals if we want to compete against these teams,” said Sanchez.

“I saw a good attitude but we were a bit soft, with some losses of concentration.”

Fans will fill their modest Montilivi stadium for the clash against Liverpool which some will view more as a reward for their achievements last season, rather than as a realistic route to the next round.

Sanchez insisted his team will stay focussed on progressing.

“We are not out of the Champions League, so we will have to keep fighting,” said the coach, despite their disappointing 1-0 defeat at Sturm Graz in November.

Part of the City Football Group, Girona certainly benefitted from their connections, infrastructure and resources last season, but reaching the Champions League for the first time in their history was still a remarkable achievement.

Girona reached La Liga for the first time in 2017 and after relegation in 2019, returned to the top flight in 2022.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and company’s visit will leave Girona fans with a night to remember, regardless of whether their team are capable of keeping the most successful English side in the competition at bay.

While doubts grow around Kylian Mbappe‘s start at Real Madrid, last season’s hero Jude Bellingham has burst into the kind of form which made Los Blancos the champions of Spain and Europe. Madrid visit Girona on Saturday in La Liga, who were the team which ran them closest for the title until a late drop-off in form saw them fall to third. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have a game in hand on leaders Barcelona, whom they trail by four points after a midweek defeat at Athletic Bilbao, in which Mbappe missed his second penalty in just over a week.

By contrast Bellingham netted for the fourth league game running and is shouldering plenty of responsibility with Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior out injured.

Last season Bellingham scored 10 goals in his first 10 games for the club, but in the current campaign he went 12 matches goalless across all competitions before breaking his duck.

“I arrived last summer and the club lost arguably one of the greatest goal scorers of the generation in Karim Benzema,” said Bellingham last week.

“This year we’ve signed (Mbappe), one of the best players of this generation, he’s someone who has scored an amazing amount of goals so as a team we expect him to do that.

“For me, I know then my role differs, which I’m happy to do… (but) I also want to take that responsibility — now I’ve got the smell for it again in these last couple of games.”

Bellingham finished well against Athletic on Wednesday to pull his team back on level terms, before a Fede Valverde mistake allowed the Basque side to snatch a 2-1 victory, snapping a three-game winning run in La Liga for Real Madrid.

The England international helped Los Blancos win 3-0 at Girona’s Montilivi stadium last season with a stunning assist and a goal, a show of force which warned the Catalan minnows they were still rungs below the elite.

Bellingham then netted twice against Girona in a 4-0 rout at home in February which helped Madrid take control of the title race.

Madrid have lost five games this season across all competitions after losing just twice in the entirety of last season.

“We’ve improved on certain things in recent games but we’re not as solid as we were last year,” admitted Ancelotti on Wednesday.

“We’ll start getting players back now and we’ll improve, that’s for sure.”

Girona lost various players in the summer and have also been stricken by injuries this season, currently sitting eighth.

Leaders Barcelona visit Real Betis earlier on Saturday, aiming to move seven points clear of Madrid before kick-off at Montilivi.

Diego Simeone’s in-form Atletico Madrid, third, welcome Sevilla on Sunday night.

One to watch: Ez Abde

Former Barcelona winger Abde will be out to prove a point to his old side when Real Betis host the league leaders at the Benito Villamarin. The explosive wide man has been an important attacking outlet on the left for his team this season even though so far he has struggled to find the net, with just one league goal in 15 appearances.

Teenage star Lamine Yamal struck twice as La Liga leaders Barcelona thrashed Girona 4-1 on Sunday. Hansi Flick’s side have now won all five of their opening matches and avenged two humiliating Catalan derby defeats by Girona last season with an emphatic victory at Montilivi. Yamal’s first-half double sent Barcelona on their way with Dani Olmo and Pedri Gonzalez adding further goals after the break. Cristhian Stuani pulled one back for the hosts, last season’s surprise package who finished third in only their fourth season in the top flight.

Girona lost several key players in the summer with coach Michel Sanchez forced to rebuild.

Barcelona have new momentum under former Bayern Munich and Germany coach Flick and produced their best performance of his reign to date.

“I think you can see the confidence we have, and when we have the ball, we have the quality to play and to create chances,” Flick told reporters.

“I think today we had a lot of chances to score one or two goals more, but in the end I’m very happy with the performance of the team.”

Yamal and striker Robert Lewandowski came close in the opening exchanges before the teenage star, who led Spain to Euro 2024 victory in the summer, broke the deadlock.

The winger picked the pocket of David Lopez as he tried to bring the ball out of defence, before finishing with aplomb past Paulo Gazzaniga after 30 minutes.

“We started very concentrated, very focussed, we pressed them — we know when we give them the space they need for combinations we get in trouble,” said Flick.

“You saw the first goal, it was unbelievably good (pressing) from Lamine.”

Yamal grabbed his second before the break with a fine guided finish from the edge of the box after a free-kick was cleared into his path.

Bryan Gil fired straight at Marc-Andre ter Stegen from close range at the other end, before Girona were awarded a penalty when Inigo Martinez handled the ball.

However after a VAR referral the referee annulled his decision, seeing that it had bounced on to Martinez’s arm off team-mate Alejandro Balde.

Olmo expanded Barcelona’s lead early in the second half with a sublime finish from a tight angle, leaving the new arrival from RB Leipzig on three goals from three La Liga matches.

Gazzaniga denied Lewandowski as he ran through on goal and tried to finish with a dink, as Barcelona maintained control.

Their fourth came through Pedri when midfielder Marc Casado cleverly played him through and the Canary Islander took his time to sidestep Gazzaniga and finish.

“We had to start (the season) well, other years we didn’t start it as we would have liked, above all the coach told us that,” Pedri told Movistar.

“(He told us) that from the first game we should push, that the league is won above all in these first games if you keep building the distance up, let’s continue in the same way.”

‘Turn the page’

Former Espanyol striker Stuani finished from close range with 10 minutes remaining to give Girona a consolation, before Barcelona substitute Ferran Torres was sent off for a high tackle on Yaser Asprilla.

They were the only blots on Barcelona’s otherwise pristine copybook as they maintained their 100 percent record at the start of the campaign.

On Saturday champions Real Madrid earned a 2-0 win at Real Sociedad to move second, four points behind Flick’s side.

Girona are seventh after the defeat, with their next match a Champions League debut away at Paris Saint-Germain.

“It feels bad, it was a tough defeat today, for how we were preparing for the game and the excitement of facing Barca again at home,” Stuani told Movistar.

“We have to try and forget about it as quickly as possible, this week we have a very special game, we have to face that with as much excitement as possible because for us it’s an historic match.

“We have to turn the page on today and try to compete in the best way (we can).”

Later Sunday Atletico Madrid host Valencia and Athletic Bilbao visit Las Palmas.

Second placed Girona are only two points clear of their Catalonian rivals Barcelona.© AFP

Girona’s hopes of taking the runners-up spot behind La Liga champions Real Madrid took a hit on Friday when a goal from Alaves’s Jon Guridi in the ninth minute of added time restricted them to a 2-2 draw. Eric Garcia put Girona ahead after just four minutes at the Mendizorroza stadium in Vitoria before Guridi levelled for the home side eight minutes later. Artem Dovbyk, the league’s leading goalscorer with 20, did not get on the scoresheet but a minute before half-time he teed up Yangel Herrera for what appeared to be the winner.

But as the game stretched deep into added time Guridi popped up to share the spoils.

Girona move to 75 points, 12 behind Madrid and more important only two points clear of their Catalonian rivals Barcelona.

Barca do not play until Monday but they will go second if they beat a Real Sociedad team still looking to seal a Europa League place.

New Spanish champions Real Madrid, who beat Bayern Munich in midweek to book their place in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, will come down to earth on Saturday as they visit relegation-threatened Granada.

Granada are second from bottom and could already be down before kick-off at their Nuevo Los Carmenes stadium if Real Mallorca, 17th, defeat Las Palmas earlier on.

Real Madrid earned what coach Carlo Ancelotti said was a “deserved” La Liga title on Saturday after beating Cadiz 3-0 and Girona sealed it with a stunning 4-2 victory over Barcelona. Ancelotti’s side did their homework by beating Cadiz and after last season’s champions stumbled against Girona, Los Blancos were crowned champions for a record-extending 36th time. Girona’s dramatic victory saw the Catalan minnows qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history, in only their fourth season in Spain’s top flight.

Ancelotti rotated heavily ahead of the Champions League semi-final second leg clash with Bayern Munich next week, but his players still got the job done.

Brahim Diaz netted in the 51st minute to put Madrid ahead and then set up Jude Bellingham, with Joselu tapping home a third.

“We’ve had a spectacular Liga campaign,” Ancelotti told reporters.

“We’ve made few errors and the advantage is deserved.”

Madrid’s comfortable win over Cadiz sent them 14 points clear of last season’s champions Barcelona, in third, with only 12 left to play for.

Girona, second after their second 4-2 win over Barcelona this season, trail Madrid by 13 points.

“We leave our skins out there on the pitch to live moments like today’s,” Madrid striker Joselu told Real Madrid TV.

“There are young players who are very hungry for titles, veterans who are delighted to be here… and these are special moments.”

With the Bayern second leg in mind, Ancelotti only selected captain Nacho Fernandez from the starting line-up that earned a 2-2 draw in Bavaria this week.

Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois started for the first time after a nine-month lay off after a knee injury and kept a clean sheet.

Madrid midfielder Luka Modric became the oldest player to appear for the club in La Liga, at 38 years and 238 days, breaking late Hungarian great Ferenc Puskas’ record from 1965 by five days.

The visitors, 18th and still battling to stay up, shaded the first half but Madrid’s goals came in the second.

Courtois made a superb save to deny Chris Ramos early in the second half and Madrid took the lead immediately afterwards.

Diaz received from the evergreen Modric on the edge of the area, turned slickly and curled an effort into the top corner.

Bellingham, on as a substitute for Turkish teenager Arda Guler, added the second soon after entering the fray at the end of a fine team move.

It was the England international’s 18th league goal of the season, keeping him in contention to finish as the top scorer.

Madrid put the cherry on their cake after a superb run by Nacho.

Poised to depart at the end of the season, the Spaniard was hailed by the Bernabeu after setting up Joselu for a simple finish in stoppage time.

‘Impossible to compete’

Los Blancos were able to celebrate after Girona came from behind twice to defeat Barcelona in a wild clash, moving second.

Barca took the lead through Andreas Christensen‘s fine volley after three minutes but La Liga’s top scorer Artem Dovbyk levelled with his 20th goal of the campaign just a minute later.

Robert Lewandowski sent Barcelona ahead with a penalty after Lamine Yamal was felled, but substitute Portu made a huge impact in the second half for Girona.

Michel Sanchez’s side netted two goals in two minutes to turn the game on its head. Portu netted the equaliser moments after coming on and then set up Miguel Gutierrez to put Girona ahead.

Portu sensationally volleyed home the fourth to ignite Girona’s tiny Montilivi stadium and get the party started.

“The players have entered Girona’s history books, what we’ve done this year is incredible,” said Sanchez.
