Indraraj alias Raju alias Bhim has been arrested by Ghaziabad Police

Lucknow:

An emotional reunion after 30 years has turned out to be a fraud for a Ghaziabad family. Days after a man claimed he was a long-lost child who had finally returned home, it emerged as a modus operandi that he would often employ to rob houses.

Indraraj alias Raju alias Bhim has been arrested by Ghaziabad Police. Cops punched holes in his plans to rob the family as they unearthed his history of fraudulent claims.

Raju – originally from Rajasthan – claimed he was kidnapped in 1993, when he was just seven, pretending that he belonged to the family. He told the cops he returned after 30 years and took their help to get information about him published in the media and social media. The cops arranged food and clothes for him for about a week.

After the family contacted them, the accused also gave out emotional statements to the media about his homecoming.

It seemed like a happy ending, but it wasn’t. The family soon got suspicious of Raju and informed the cops. Soon his DNA was sent for matching with that of the family, which led to his arrest.

Further probe revealed Raju was thrown out of his home since he had a habit of stealing.

“He used to steal from the houses of relatives and acquaintances, due to which his family got fed up with him and threw him out in 2005. Then he started hiding his identity and living in the houses of several people,” said Nimish Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Trans Hindon, Ghaziabad.

Since being thrown out, he kept changing his identity to live with nine different families. Then he robbed their houses and left without informing anyone – this was his modus operandi.

Whenever Raju visited a family, he used to talk about what property they had, said the cops, suspecting that he was after their property. Raju, however, told the cops that after his mother’s death, he used to live in others’ houses for free food.

The cops have confirmed at least five places where he had stayed hiding his identity and suspect there could be more.

DCP Patil said Raju went to jail after being caught in 2021 and that he had committed similar offences in Punjab, Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, and Hisar and Sirsa in Haryana.

The police will now send its teams to other states to find out where all he had stayed hiding his identity and the robberies he committed, he said, adding that a fraud case has been filed against him.

Ghaziabad:

A 26-year-old dental student was found dead in her hostel room at Divya Jyoti Group of Institutions in Niwari area here on Saturday, police said.

According to police, MDS student Renuka Yadav, a native of Haryana’s Rewari district, took her own life. She had recently moved into the hostel room and had not been feeling well.

“A suicide note was recovered from the room, indicating that Renuka was solely responsible for her decision,” ACP Modinagar Gyan Praksh Rai said.

“On Friday, she had informed her teachers that she would attend classes, but when she didn’t show up, her roommates were sent to check on her,” he said.

Upon finding no response, the roommates alerted the hostel warden who informed the police. The police, along with a forensic team, broke into the room and found Renuka’s body hanging from the ceiling fan.

The police are investigating all angles to ascertain the exact cause of death. A post-mortem examination will also be conducted.

While there were no visible signs of injury on the body, except for the mark on the neck, the police are examining all evidence, including Renuka’s phone records, they said.

(From left) Accused Zeeshan, his niece Aafiya and his sister-in-law Shaheen.

Ghaziabad:

A case of double murder was reported in Ghaziabad when a 23-year-old man strangled his sister-in-law and her three-month-old daughter at their residence to settle old scores with the woman, police said on Tuesday. The accused has been arrested.

A detailed probe is underway but initial investigations revealed that the accused, Zeeshan, wanted to exact revenge on the woman for the assault and humiliation he suffered from her cousin brother two months ago. Besides, he suspected that the woman had convinced his brother not to give him Rs 30,000 to go to Dubai for work.

Police said another daughter of the woman, who witnessed the murders, however, survived a similar attack as she ran away from the spot.

Those murdered were identified as Shaheen Parveen (34) and her daughter Aafiya.

According to Ghaziabad Rural Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Surendranath Tripathi, the murders took place in Bamheta village under Wave City police station on Monday.

Police said Zeeshan first used a dupatta to strangle Shaheen in front of her two children. He then strangled Aafiya with his hands.

“Three-and-a-half-year-old Anbiya ran away, crying. Zeeshan would have killed her too had she stayed in the room,” the DCP said.

Explaining the possible reasons behind the murders, Tripathi said: “Two months ago, Shaheen’s cousin brother Afroz had humiliated Zeeshan during a dispute over the construction of a house by Zeeshan’s family in Bihar, and even pulled him by his collar. The accused wanted to seek revenge over this. Besides, he wanted to go to Dubai and needed Rs 30,000 for the visa. He suspected that Shaheen had convinced his brother Burhan to not give him the money.”

After committing the crime, Zeeshan fled to Noida, where he snatched a woman’s mobile phone and made a call to Burhan, threatening to kill.

The accused was arrested while he was returning to Ghaziabad on Tuesday, police said.

New Delhi:

The Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh governments on Monday suspended physical classes for standards 10 and 12 in the national capital and neighbouring Gurugram and Ghaziabad, hours after the Supreme Court directed all states in the National Capital Region (NCR) to take an immediate call to shift to online lessons in view of the deteriorating air quality in the area.

The top court’s direction came while hearing a batch of pleas relating to the worsening air quality, as a petitioner questioned the Delhi government’s decision to discontinue physical classes for all students, barring standards 10 and 12, from Monday.  The Haryana government had declared holidays for students up to class 5 in both government and private schools, while the Uttar Pradesh administration had not announced any such measure.

In a post on X, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi said: “From tomorrow physical classes shall be suspended for Class 10 and 12 as well, and all studies will be shifted online.”

Likewise, the University of Delhi announced that “in the larger interest of students… it has been decided that the classes shall be conducted in Online Mode till Saturday…”

In Haryana’s Gurugram, the office of the deputy commissioner said “…all classes upto 12th standard will remain discontinued from 19.11.2024 till Saturday, 23.11.2024 or further orders, whichever is earlier, in all areas (urban as well as rural) of District Gurugram”. “Online classes will be conducted in lieu of physical classes, in all Government & Private Schools in the district… Strict compliance of the orders is be ensured positively,” it said.

Later, the Ghaziabad district magistrate in Uttar Pradesh also announced a similar measure, saying classes up to standard 12 will be held online till further notice.

On Sunday evening, the government in Delhi, which has been grappling with severe air pollution, announced discontinuation of physical classes from Monday for all students, barring classes 10 and 12, in view of the board exams next year. With the air quality worsening, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced the implementation of restrictions under Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

However, a petitioner seeking directions to curb air pollution in the Capital and adjoining areas questioned the Delhi government’s decision in the top court on Monday, arguing that the lungs of students of Classes 10 and 12 “cannot be different” from the others.

“The lungs of 10th and 12th students cannot be different from the other students… if a direction can be given to stop those physical classes as well,” senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan told a bench of Justice AS Oka and Justice AG Masih.

Subsequently, the bench ordered all states in the NCR region to take an immediate call to stop physical classes up to standard 12 in view of the deteriorating air quality.

The top court also pulled up Delhi authorities over a delay in implementing tough restrictions under GRAP to tackle the bad air days.

The court told the CAQM in NCR and the Delhi government that restrictions under Stage 4 of GRAP – implemented after the Air Quality Index (AQI) crosses the 400 mark – must not be relaxed without its permission even if the AQI drops below 300.

Under Stage 4 of GRAP, which kicks in when the Air Quality Index crosses the 450 mark, commercial vehicles registered outside Delhi are banned from entering the Capital unless they are EVs, CNG or conform to BS-VI norms.

The Punjab government is yet to make any announcement on school closures.

Stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana after harvesting the paddy crop in October and November is often blamed for the rise in air pollution in Delhi and neighbouring areas.

The woman has been identified as Aarti, police said. (Representational)

Ghaziabad:

A 32-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide on Friday morning by jumping from the 11th floor amid allegations of dowry harassment against her husband, who has been arrested, police said.

The woman has been identified as Aarti, police added.

According to the Nand Gram police, the woman’s body was sent for postmortem. Police have arrested her accused husband Mayank Tyagi. Aarti’s father Rajeev Tyagi has lodged a complaint accusing Mayank, his father Vinod, and mother Sadhna of subjecting the woman to severe dowry-related torture.

In his complaint, Rajeev Tyagi alleged that Aarti’s marriage to Mayank on January 15, 2020 was marked by persistent demands for additional dowry beyond what was already given.

“Aarti had expressed her suffering through personal communications and a handwritten diary recovered from her belongings. The diary has details of her grievances and distress,” her father alleged.

Police said they are currently investigating whether Aarti’s death was a result of suicide or if she was forcibly thrown from the building by her husband and in-laws.

SHO Dharm Pal Singh of the Nand Gram police station said an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding her death.
