As Mumbai Indians, already eliminated from the playoffs race, gear Kolkata Knight Riders, their overseas pacer Gerald Coetzee shared some interesting insights on Hardik Pandya‘s captaincy. Since taking over as the captain of the MI franchise, little has gone right for Hardik, who has neither managed to impress as a player, nor as a leader. In fact, some of the former cricketers have been critical of the India all-rounder’s decision-making too, questioning the management’s decision to name him the skipper at the expense of Rohit Sharma. Amid this controversy, Hardik’s teammate Coetzee has revealed what it is like playing under the veteran star.

“I think he’s been a really good captain. I think as you get different captaincy styles, he’s got a new style which is unique to him. No captain is the same, he’s been really good. He’s been really motivational to the guys. He’s been really clear with the plans. I think he’s an exceptional captain,” said Gerald Coetzee in the pre-match press conference.

Coetzee also held special praise for the team’s marquee pacer Jasprit Bumrah who has been exceptional on a personal level, even in times when Mumbai Indians have struggled for positive results.

“I think basically, it comes down to simplicity and accuracy and I think he’s done that better than any other bowler in this competition and that’s as simple as that,” he added.

Earlier, former South Africa and Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter AB de Villiers called out Hardik’s ‘bravado’ style of captaincy that doesn’t work well with senior players like Rohit.

“The captaincy style of Hardik Pandya is quite bravado. It’s ego-driven in a way, chest out. I don’t think how he walks on the field is always genuine, but he has decided that is his way of captaincy. Almost like MS. Cool, calm, collective, always got your chest out. But when you play with a lot of experienced players, guys who have been around for ages… They don’t buy into that. It worked at GT, where it was a younger team. Sometimes, inexperienced players love to follow that kind of leadership,” De Villiers had said on his YouTube channel.

With MI’s campaign already over, it would be interesting to see how the team reassembles ahead of the next season, which will also see a mega auction take place.

Hardik Pandya celebrates with Rohit Sharma after MI’s win in IPL 2024© BCCI

There has been a lot of chatter over the captaincy situation in Mumbai Indians with the fanbase split over the decision to appoint Hardik Pandya as the skipper in place of Rohit Sharma ahead of the new season. Things got worse as the five-time champions lost three matches on the trot and Hardik was booed by a section of the crowd at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. While MI did win their next two games in IPL 2024, the rumours of a possible rift between Rohit and Hardik continued to dominate headlines and the loss against Chennai Super Kings once again led to massive criticism from fans and experts. However, following MI’s thrilling win over Punjab Kings on Thursday, Hardik and Rohit shared a brilliant moment and it is exactly what Mumbai Indians fans wanted to see as the team eye resurgence in IPL 2024.

Ashutosh Sharma gave a glimmer of hope to PBKS with his explosive knock but three-wicket hauls for Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee was enough to guide MI to a close-fought victory.

Following Kagiso Rabada‘s run out in the final over of the match, the stadium erupted and the happiness was clear on the faces of MI cricketers. While Ishan Kishan punched the air in celebration, skipper Hardik was congratulated by Rohit before they joined the rest of their teammates.

“Very good game of cricket. Everyone’s nerve got tested. We did speak about before the game that the character will be checked in this game. Naturally you think you’re ahead in the game. But we knew IPL has a tendency to produce these games. Unbelievable – coming in and playing like that (Ashutosh’s knock). Almost every ball hitting the middle. Happy for him and chuffed for his future. We did speak in the timeout that it doesn’t matter how good we look. We’ll keep scrapping in this game. We were quite soft in certain overs. Nevertheless, a win is a win,” Hardik said at the post-match press conference.

Romario Shepherd’s 10-ball 39* outmuscled Tristan Stubb’s courageous 71 off 25 balls as Mumbai Indians ended its three-match losing streak in the IPL 2024 with a 29-run win against Delhi Capitals in Mumbai on Sunday. Conceding as many as 51 runs in the last two overs proved catastrophic for Delhi Capitals, whose bowlers remained wayward and batters lacked the spunk in the initial overs to go after MI bowlers, even though Stubbs went ballistic to make 25-ball 71 not out.

The right-handed Stubbs smacked as many as seven sixes and three fours but his effort could only reduce the margin of defeat for Delhi, who lost a flurry of wickets towards the end to finish at 205 for eight in reply to Mumbai Indians’ 234 for five. Once again poor quality of domestic talent in DC set-up proved to be their undoing.

Save Abhishek Porel, none of the other young uncapped Indians have measured up.

While Mumbai Indians managed to open their account in the points table after three losses upfront, the win also helped them leapfrog both Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Delhi Capitals to jump to the seventh spot while also improving their NRR to -0.704.

On their part, a fourth loss in five matches resulted in Delhi Capitals slipping down to the bottom of the table and they now also have the worst NRR of -1.370 among all teams.

Shepherd hurt Delhi Capitals the most, clobbering four sixes and two fours off Anrich Nortje’s 20th over to collect 32 runs and returned with the ball to get the prized scalp of David Warner (10).

Later in the game, Shepherd was on the receiving end too, ending as the costliest of all bowlers by giving away 54 runs among all those who finished their four-over spells for Mumbai.

Shepherd’s onslaught featuring four sixes and three fours topped a collective effort which Mumbai Indians came up with in the first half of the game to register their highest-ever score at their homeground.

When DC started its chase, Prithvi Shaw came up with a 40-ball 66 with three sixes and eight fours but the asking rate kept soaring beyond its reach.

The No 3 Porel hit a few attractive strokes but failed to make the most of a lifeline he got while batting on 30. The left-hander eventually perished for a 31-ball 41 with five fours, and following him back in the hut soon was Delhi captain Rishabh Pant (1).

Delhi’s lower order too cut a sorry figure with Axar Patel (8), Lalit Yadav (3), debutant Kumar Kushagra (0) and Jhye Richardson (2) falling in quick succession giving Gerald Coetzee, four wicket haul.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians batting unit fired in unison to post an imposing 234 for 5 against Delhi Capitals.

Nortje’s final figures read a sorry 2 for 65 in 4 overs. Ishant Sharma, in all likelihood, playing his last IPL edition, is looking a pale shadow of his very old self, being taken for 40 in 3 overs. Mostly he is huffing and puffing to the bowling mark and also at times not able to finish his follow through. The pace has dipped alarmingly but DC have no option but to play him.

Shepherd was last to join the party but seemed to have made the most of it, after each of Rohit Sharma (49 off 27 balls), Ishan Kishan (42 off 23 balls), Hardik Pandya (39 off 30) and Tim David (45 not out off 21 balls, 2 fours, 4 sixes) also made merry in batting-friendly conditions at the Wankhede Stadium.

It was, however, a forgettable outing for Suryakumar Yadav, who perished for two-ball duck on his first game since mid-December last year.

But David’s fiery knock and Shepherd’s late fireworks ensured that they still had a huge total on board.

Mumbai’s cause in general was also aided by wayward Delhi bowlers through the course of the innings, who kept feeding them balls in the zone to hit or those with enough width off which the batters could take their chances.

Mayank Yadav Or Gerald Coetzee? Controversy Over IPL 2024’s Fastest Ball – Explained” »

Mayank Yadav has impressed both experts as well as fans with his fiery pace and during Lucknow Super Giants’ IPL 2024 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, he claimed the distinction of bowling the fastest delivery of this year’s competition at 156.7 kmph. However, the record came with a slight controversy as earlier in the day, Mumbai Indians fast bowler Gerald Coetzee grabbed headlines for allegedly bowling a 157.4 kmph delivery against Rajasthan Royals. While the news did do the rounds on social media, the official list shown by IPL during LSG’s game did not feature Coetzee’s record.

Mayank had earlier claimed the record with a fiery 156.7 kmph delivery during the match against Punjab Kings and on Tuesday, the IPL claimed that the youngster has bettered his own record.

There was another list that showed the fastest deliveries in the history of the competition and it was topped by Shaun Tait with his 157.7 kmph effort. He was followed by Lockie Ferguson (157.3kph) and Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Umran Malik (157kph) and Mayank currently in fourth position.

According to ESPNCricinfo, the speedometer was at fault in reading Coetzee’s speed during the RR match and the actual speed of the delivery was actually around 141 kmph.

Following his three-wicket haul against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) pacer Mayank Yadav said that Cameron Green‘s dismissal was special to him among other wickets.
Within just two matches, Mayank has gathered headlines for his sheer pace, touching bowling speeds of 150 kmph-plus consistently.

In a video shared on IPL’s official social media handle, Mayank said that the over where he dismissed Green was very aggressive. He revealed that the LSG skipper KL Rahul told the pacer to “attack a bit” and use bouncers.

“Green’s wicket was special because I personally like just like one kind of wicket, which is bowling people out, like any fast bowler. That over was a bit aggressive because I’d picked a wicket in the previous over. The captain also told me to attack a bit and use the bouncer with my pace,” Mayank said.

He added that his side’s plan was to bowl at the stumps and not to give any room to the RCB batters.

“No extra training, I just do things that make me quicker and stronger. This was the first time I played on this ground. I’d heard that 180 is easily chaseable on this ground but our plan was to keep bowling at the stumps and not give the batters any room,” he added.

During the match against RCB, Yadav bagged three wickets in his four-over spell, giving only 14 runs. Following his remarkable spell, the pacer was named the ‘Player of the Match’. The LSG seamer scripted history at the age of 21 as he became the first bowler in the history of IPL to win the ‘Player of the Match’ award in their first two matches.

Mumbai Indians fast bowler Gerald Coetzee shattered youngster Mayank Yadav‘s record by delivering the fastest ball of IPL 2024 during the match against Rajasthan Royals on Monday. Mayank clinched the record just two days ago when he delivered a 155.8 kmph ball for Lucknow Super Giants but Coetzee surpassed his mark by quite some margin. The 157.4 kmph scorcher from the South Africa international came in the final ball of RR’s chase and Riyan Parag was able to guide it towards the third-man boundary for a four. Overall, Coetzee is second behind former Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait who delivered a 157.71 kmph ripper while playing for Rajasthan Royals back in 2011.

Fastest deliveries in IPL history:

Shaun Tait 157.71 kmph – 2011

Gerald Coetzee 157.4 kmph – 2024

Lockie Ferguson 157.3 kmph – 2022

Umran Malik 157 kmph – 2022

Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya on Tuesday asserted that the former champions will not give up and will continue to fight in the ongoing IPL despite slumping to a hat-trick of defeats.

“If there’s one thing you should know about this team, we never give up. We’ll keep fighting, we’ll keep going,” Hardik posted on X.

Hardik has been facing the ire of fans since replacing Rohit Sharma as MI captain. The all-rounder was booed in the team’s opening two matches and the crowd hostility was at its peak in MI’s first home game of the season on Monday.

To add to the woes, under his captaincy MI’s campaign at the 2024 IPL got off to a disastrous start as they sit at the bottom of the table following three losses on the trot.

However, MI are known to be perennial slow starters. In 2015, they lost the first four games before going on to win the title.

Hardik’s poor captaincy calls have also been questioned — whether it was not giving Bumrah the new ball or sending Tim David ahead of himself against Gujarat Titans.

The change in captaincy has not sat well with the legions of MI supporters. On Monday, chants of ‘Rohit Rohit’ filled the Wankhede with the Indian captain himself asking the crowd not to jeer Hardik.

Mumbai Indians will next face Delhi Capitals at home on Sunday.

Pakistan cricket team star Mohammad Rizwan was once again in the news during the Cricket World Cup 2023 match against South Africa on Friday as he was involved in a verbal spat with pacer Marco Jansen. Rizwan was dropped by Jansen off his own bowling during the seventh over of the Pakistan innings and the batter punished South Africa for their mistake with a boundary off the very next delivery. However, tensions flared between the players as Rizwan and Jansen were engaged in a war of words and the umpires had to intervene. Rizwan was later dismissed by Gerald Coetzee after he was caught behind the stumps by Quinton De Kock and his celebration said it all about the importance of the dismissal.

Earlier, Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and opted to bat.

Pakistan have lost three matches in succession after winning their first two. They were forced to leave out fast bowler Hasan Ali who has a fever.

He is replaced by Mohammad Wasim while spinner Mohammad Nawaz comes in for Usama Mir in a like-for-like change.

South Africa are in a strong position with four wins in five games.

Their captain Temba Bavuma is back after missing the last two games with a gastric problem.

Opener Reeza Hendricks has made way in one of three changes to the side that defeated Bangladesh by 149 runs in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Kagiso Rabada, who has a back injury, and Lizaad Williams are replaced by leg spinner Tabraiz Shamsi and fast bowler Lungi Ngidi.

Pakistan: Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique, Babar Azam (capt), Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Wasim, Haris Rauf

South Africa: Temba Bavuma (capt), Quinton de Kock (wkt), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi, Lungi Ngidi
