Two goals from Jae-sung Lee took Mainz to a shock 2-1 home win over Bayern Munich on Saturday, handing coach Vincent Kompany his first league loss. Lee scored in each half against an uncharacteristically poor Bayern, who are now just four points clear after Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-0 win at Augsburg. Injuries meant Kompany was unable to call on several first team regulars including Harry Kane, Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies, Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry and Joao Palhinha.

Kane’s absence was particularly telling in the first half, with the league leaders dominating possession but unable to convert any of their half chances into a goal.

Mainz boasted a better-than-expected home record against the German giants, having won three of their past four home league games over Bayern.

The home side struck shortly before half-time, Lee taking advantage of a poor clearance from his South Korea teammate Min-Jae Kim to hammer home.

Even with the knowledge that Leverkusen were ahead in Augsburg, Bayern came out poorer after half-time, lacking precision and energy.

Mainz soon capitalised through Lee again. Armindo Sieb threaded a clever cross goalwards for Lee to collect before blasting home on the spin.

Leroy Sane tapped in a deflected Joshua Kimmich shot in the 87th minute to give the league leaders hope, but Mainz held firm for a famous home win.

The win moved Mainz, who battled relegation last season, up to sixth.

Defending champions Leverkusen continued their recent resurgence, winning comfortably 2-0 at Augsburg, their seventh victory in a row.

Martin Terrier put Leverkusen in front 14 minutes in, curling the ball home with his first touch after a lovely low cross from Jeremie Frimpong.

Florian Wirtz added a second in the 40th minute when he controlled the ball, sold the Augsburg defence a dummy before skipping a shot across the grass and into the bottom corner.

A double from Alassane Plea and goals to Robin Hack and Tim Kleindienst took Borussia Moenchengladbach to a 4-1 win over Holstein Kiel.

Gladbach have now lost just one of their past eight league games while Kiel, playing their first season in the top flight, sit second last.

In Saturday’s late game, promoted St Pauli host Werder Bremen, while Champions League participants Borussia Dortmund, Stuttgart and RB Leipzig are all in action on Sunday.

Victor Boniface’s 72nd-minute goal was the difference as Bayer Leverkusen beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 at home, while RB Leipzig won 2-0 at Mainz to go top of the table. Omar Marmoush sent Frankfurt 1-0 up, before Robert Andrich equalised for the champions midway through the first half and Boniface completed the comeback in the second period. Leverkusen were given an early chance when Amine Adli was felled in the box, sending Boniface to the spot after a long VAR review.

The Nigerian’s shot, too soft and central, was gobbled up by Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp

Just five minutes later, the referee was sent to the video screen again, this time finding a penalty for Frankfurt, with Andrich lightly touching Marmoush’s foot.

Marmoush showed Boniface how it is done, blasting a low shot left to give the visitors the lead on 16 minutes. The Egyptian now has an incredible nine goals and five assists in just seven league games this season.

Andrich made good on his error soon afterwards, combining expertly with Adli and Martin Terrier to flit through the penalty area for a superb one-touch goal in the 25th minute.

Boniface would also redeem himself, giving Leverkusen the lead inside the final 20 minutes, heading in a deflected cross from substitute Florian Wirtz to put the hosts on course for victory.

Andrich told Sky Germany “we were focused and played good football — and there was a nice goal from me.”

The 30-year-old midfielder, who made his Germany debut last season after a career largely spent in the lower divisions, said of his performance: “I always have fun playing football, but I maybe have to work a bit harder than the rest.”

Days out from their home Champions League clash with Liverpool, Leipzig beat Mainz to go top of the table, at least until Bayern Munich’s home match against Stuttgart later on Saturday.

At kick-off, the Mainz fans unveiled a series of banners critical of former coach Jurgen Klopp’s decision to take over as football boss at Leipzig’s parent company Red Bull.

The home fans asked “Are you crazy?” and accused Klopp, who coached Mainz to a debut promotion before joining Borussia Dortmund and later Liverpool, of “forgetting everything we gave you”.

Still unbeaten this season in Germany despite two Champions League losses, Leipzig took the lead after 20 minutes thanks to an excellent solo effort from Xavi Simons.

Leipzig captain Willi Orban tapped in a rebound from a Lois Openda cross to put his side 2-0 up.

Orban told Sky: “We could have finished things off earlier but we’re happy with the win.”

Elsewhere, Freiburg continued their impressive start to the season with a 3-1 home win over Augsburg to go into outright second.

Freiburg were three goals up at half-time, with Vincenzo Grifo, Philipp Lienhart and Christian Guenter scoring, before Augsburg’s Phillip Tietz pulled one back in the second period.

Borussia Moenchengladbach striker Tim Kleindienst scored a double, days after making his Germany debut, in a 3-2 home win over former club Heidenheim.

Hoffenheim won their first game since their season opener, with Andrej Kramaric, Marius Buelter and Haris Tabakovic scoring in a 3-1 win over lowly Bochum, who sit last with just one point from seven games.

‘Are You Crazy?’: FC Mainz Fans Slam Jurgen Klopp’s Red Bull Move https://artifex.news/are-you-crazy-fc-mainz-fans-slam-jurgen-klopps-red-bull-move-6828118/ Sat, 19 Oct 2024 18:29:09 +0000 https://artifex.news/are-you-crazy-fc-mainz-fans-slam-jurgen-klopps-red-bull-move-6828118/ Read More “‘Are You Crazy?’: FC Mainz Fans Slam Jurgen Klopp’s Red Bull Move” »

Fans of Bundesliga side Mainz unveiled banners slamming former coach Jurgen Klopp’s decision to join Red Bull in Saturday’s 2-0 home loss against RB Leipzig. Using a play on words with Klopp’s last name, the home fans asked “Are you crazy?” and used a quote from their side’s former boss: “I like people until the point they disappoint me.” A larger banner, in big red letters, asked Klopp if he had “forgotten everything we gave you?”. A former player at the club, Klopp coached Mainz for seven years, taking the team to the top flight for the first time before moving to Borussia Dortmund and later Liverpool.

Klopp stepped down as Liverpool manager in the summer having won several titles, including the Premier League and Champions League.

In October, Klopp announced he would join energy drink company Red Bull, which owns clubs in Leipzig, Salzburg and New York, as their global head of football from January 2025.

His decision to take up the job at Red Bull has annoyed supporters in Germany — particularly at ex-clubs Dortmund and Mainz — who have a long-standing dislike of RB Leipzig.

Some fans believe Leipzig, founded in 2009, are not consistent with Germany’s 50+1 rule, which requires member control of clubs, while others have hit out at the multi-club ownership model used by Red Bull.

Leipzig’s win at Mainz sent the club, who are yet to lose in the league this season, top of the table — at least until Bayern Munich’s match against Stuttgart at home later on Saturday.

Leipzig coach Marco Rose, who played under Klopp for several years at Mainz, dismissed the fans’ criticism as a minority opinion.

“There are 35,000 people in the stadium, many of whom have an opinion. I believe that around 34,936 people love Kloppo for the fact that he shaped an era here, that we achieved something great together,” said Rose.

“He was here in Mainz for a long time.

“Everyone has their own life somewhere and the right to decide things freely and for themselves. Not everyone has to love it.”

Rose added that: “(He) didn’t even notice (the banner), so it can’t have been that wild.”

Harry Kane Scores As Bayern Munich Win At Mainz, Bayer Leverkusen Go Top https://artifex.news/harry-kane-scores-as-bayern-munich-win-at-mainz-bayer-leverkusen-go-top-4504074/ Sun, 22 Oct 2023 05:24:24 +0000 https://artifex.news/harry-kane-scores-as-bayern-munich-win-at-mainz-bayer-leverkusen-go-top-4504074/ Read More “Harry Kane Scores As Bayern Munich Win At Mainz, Bayer Leverkusen Go Top” »

Harry Kane scored his ninth goal in eight league matches as Bayern Munich won 3-1 at Mainz on Saturday, after Bayer Leverkusen returned to the top of the table by winning at Wolfsburg. Kane headed in from close range after Kingsley Coman had given Bayern an early lead, continuing his stunning form since leaving Tottenham in the summer. Mainz, who had won their previous three home league matches against the perennial German champions, pulled one back just before half-time when Anthony Caci blasted home.

Early in the second half, Mainz defender Stefan Bell was centimetres away from equalising for the home side but shot wide on the counter.

Bayern however launched a counter of their own, Leon Goretzka slamming in from outside the box for the visitors’ third to put the game to bed.

Kane admitted Bayern “rode our luck at times” but told Sky Germany “it’s an important away win.”

“I still feel like there’s room for improvement — I’m still getting to know my teammates.”

Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel praised his side’s toughness.

“(Matthijs de Ligt) is coming back from injury, Jo (Joshua Kimmich) had the flu and Leon (Goretzka) had a swollen ankle, so I’m happy about it. Awesome performance.”

Bayern, who have won the past 11 Bundesliga titles in a row, now sit two points behind Leverkusen with eight matches played.

In Wolfsburg, a second-half goal from Alex Grimaldo took Leverkusen one point clear atop the table with a 2-1 win, replacing Borussia Dortmund who had taken top spot with a 1-0 win over Werder Bremen on Friday.

The visitors had hit the lead early, Victor Boniface holding off four defenders while chipping across to Jeremie Frimpong, who leapt acrobatically to direct a shot into the net.

Wolfsburg ‘keeper Pavao Pervan caught it and played on as Frimpong celebrated, but goal-line technology confirmed the goal was valid.

Wolfsburg were less elegant in reply, Maxence Lacroix tapping in from close range to equalise just before half-time.

Bayer coach Xabi Alonso brought creative midfielder Florian Wirtz off the bench in search of a winner with 30 minutes remaining and the 20-year-old obliged, winning possession to help set up Grimaldo’s equaliser.

“After we hit the lead, we got worse and there were too many mistakes” Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka told Sky Germany.

“In the second half we showed a reaction and we won deservedly.”

Unbeaten Bayer return to the top and have now won seven of their eight league fixtures.

Stuttgart sizzle

Surprise package Stuttgart sit one point behind Leverkusen in second after a 3-0 win at struggling Union Berlin, with red-hot striker Serhou Guirassy scoring again.

Guirassy headed Stuttgart in front with his 14th goal of the campaign in just eight games, before being substituted after half an hour with a leg injury.

Union fought hard but have not scored at home since the opening match of the season and their lack of scoring hurt them again as Silas and Deniz Undav both netted for Stuttgart in the final 10 minutes.

Union, who host reigning Serie A champions Napoli in the Champions League on Tuesday, have now lost eight matches in a row in all competitions.

RB Leipzig won 3-1 at promoted Darmstadt, a double from Lois Openda and a goal from Emil Forsberg cancelling out Tobias Kempe’s first-half penalty.

Elsewhere, Eintracht Frankfurt overturned an early deficit to win away at Hoffenheim 3-1.

Hoffenheim’s Maximilian Beier scored after just three minutes but goals from Omar Marmoush, Ansgar Knauff and Ellyes Skhiri helped the visitors storm back before half-time.

Freiburg also came from behind on Saturday, a goal from Ritsu Doan and Vincenzo Grifo’s penalty cancelling out Goncalo Paciencia’s opener for a 2-1 home victory over Bochum.

German football club Mainz on Tuesday said they had suspended player Anwar El Ghazi after the winger made an “unacceptable” comment on the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza on social media. “El Ghazi took a position on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East that was deemed unacceptable,” the Bundesliga club said in a statement. Dutch international El Ghazi made the comments in a “since-deleted” post on social media on Sunday night, Mainz said.

“Prior to making this decision, the club and the player had engaged in an in-depth discussion.”

Mainz said they respected that there were “varying perspectives on the decades-long, complex conflict”.

The club were however “distancing themselves from the content of the social media post”, which did not “align with the values of the club”.

In the statement, Mainz did not indicate how long the suspension could last.

Mainz’s next opponents in the league are Bayern Munich, who have also come under pressure due to comments by one of their players, Noussair Mazraoui, on the war.

In a social media post, the Moroccan international wished victory for the Palestinians in the conflict with Israel.

The remark was “unspeakable”, the Central Council of Jews in Germany said in German daily Augsburger Allgemeine.

“We recognise that he (Mazraoui) subsequently distanced himself from all terrorist organisations. Unfortunately, Mazraoui continues to fail to clearly condemn Hamas’s barbarism,” it said.

Waves of Hamas fighters broke through the heavily fortified border between Gaza and Israel on October 7, killing more than 1,400 people.

Shell-shocked Israel has responded with withering air strikes against targets in Gaza, leaving about 3,000 Gazans dead, according to a recent toll from the health ministry.
