McLaren’s Lando Norris produced a spellbinding late lap to deprive Max Verstappen of pole for the Spanish Grand Prix in qualifying on Saturday. Lewis Hamilton will start on the second row alongside his Mercedes teammate George Russell. Verstappen looked nailed on to start Sunday’s 10th round of the season from the front of the grid. But in the last throw of the top-10 shoot-out Norris denied the Red Bull ace by a mere two hundredths of a second. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will start fifth.

“Today was the perfect lap,” said Norris after only his second career pole.

“Max seemed a bit stronger, but we made some changes,” added the Briton who won his maiden Grand Prix this season in Miami.

“I’m super happy to be on pole, it’s going to be tough but we’re here to win!”

Verstappen, targeting a fourth straight world title, leads the championship by 56 points from Charles Leclerc, who starts Sunday’s race in fifth, with Norris seven points back in third.

This is the 10th round of the 24-race season and the first of a triple header with Austria and Silverstone coming up over the next two weekends.

Verstappen won his maiden Grand Prix in Barcelona in 2016 and is on a hat-trick after wins in 2022 and 2023.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton topped the times ahead of Australian Oscar Piastri in an intriguing opening free practice for this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix. Hamilton clocked a best lap in his Mercedes of 1minute and 12.169 seconds to outpace McLaren’s Piastri by 0.029sec with his ‘silver arrows’ team-mate George Russell third. Lando Norris was fourth in the second McLaren ahead of local favourite Charles Leclerc in the leading Ferrari, two-time champion Fernando Alonso and his Aston Martin team-mate Lance Stroll.

The late pause, after Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu lost control of his Sauber, interrupted some teams’ plans to switch to soft tyres in the closing minutes, leading to an unrepresentative outcome.

Three-time world champion Max Verstappen, who did not run on softs, complained about his Red Bull car as he struggled in 11th place and 0.815secs off the pace.

“It is so loose on the bumps, any correction with engine braking or brake bias just makes it worse,” said Verstappen, who remarked on Thursday he envisaged a tough weekend labelling the track “one of the more difficult” for the team.

McLaren introduced a striking yellow and green livery as a tribute to the late Ayrton Senna, one of many changes as the teams switched from the sweeping corners of Imola last weekend to the narrow and unforgiving barriers of Monaco.

On an overcast day with rain threatening, Hamilton led the cars out of the pit-lane to start the session, most teams opting for hards.

Piastri set the early pace ahead of Verstappen whose father Jos was present for the first time since Red Bull’s early season off the track difficulties.

Norris soon took over for McLaren with a lap in 1:15.294 before Leclerc gained the initiative in 1:14.238.

Norris and Leclerc continued swapping fastest laps, the Monegasque showing his form on the track that was his childhood bus-run to school.

After 30 minutes of the hour Verstappen and then Hamilton moved up to second before Russell went top on softs ahead of his Mercedes team-mate.

Hamilton then improved to 1:12.169 to go top before Zhou Guanyu crashed to trigger a red flag.

The Chinese driver clipped a barrier and lost part of his front wing which was then collected by Leclerc’s Ferrari as he ran over the debris.

This forced Leclerc to pit for repairs as light rain fell and on resumption Perez pitted with a puncture.

Lewis Hamilton said he was grateful for a moment of reflection on Thursday morning when he recalled his first visits to Monaco and the realisation of his teenage dreams. Speaking ahead of this weekend’s 81st running of the Monaco Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion said he had a striking sense of the history and majesty of the event that he first attended as a 13-year-old as he arrived in the famous harbour driving through the tunnel.

“I really felt the place and its history and as I came through the tunnel I remembered Ayrton (Senna) from watching it on TV as a kid and that it felt surreal to think that I am now one of the 22 to do it – and that I have been doing it for so long,” he said.

“It was my dream when I was 13 and I came here the first time and I thought this is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been and I want to live here.”

Hamilton not only realised that dream, winning the Monaco Grand Prix three times – in 2008, 2016 and 2019 – but by buying an apartment and living in the Mediterranean principality.

“I raced here the first time when I was 18 or 19,” he added.

“In Formula Three. And it was epic. I had a rented scooter and I was running around town and I went up to Eze and it was really epic for me. And then, I got to go on the grid and it was crazy because I had only ever seen Martin Brundle there.

“It’s a crazy place, a special place, it’s the pearl of our sport and the second smallest country in the world.”

Hamilton’s golden recollection of his early experiences in Monaco may not have coincided with W. Somerset Maugham’s description of the principality as “a sunny place for shady people”, but it was heart-felt.

The Mercedes driver, who is set to join Ferrari next year, has not allowed the demise of his team’s form to diminish his pleasure from driving and suggested he will relish the action again this weekend.

Now 39, he takes a more mellowed view of his racing than he did as a forceful younger man.

“We don’t have any upgrades this weekend,” he said. “The package was spread over the last two races. We have our highest downforce package and an evolved wing, but otherwise I don’t know where we’ll be.

“But I am more excited than I have been with the previous two cars. They were not so great. This one is a real work in progress and it’s much better than last year.

“There are so many things to consider – how high or low to run, the balance, weight distribution, cambers and tows. It is one thing to practice in the ‘sim’, but it is only at the track that you discover the issues you may or may not have.

“I hope we just hit the ground running and we don’t look back, but that’s not been the case for the last two years. But this car is more predictable and it is nice to drive. It’s not perfect, but we are going in the right direction.”

Three-time world champion and series leader Max Verstappen returned to winning ways on Sunday when he resisted a late charge by Lando Norris to take a dramatic victory for Red Bull at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. After being beaten in Miami, where friend and rival Norris claimed his maiden victory for McLaren, the Dutchman resisted him to come home 0.725 seconds ahead of the Briton who mounted a rousing final attack in vain. Charles Leclerc finished third for Ferrari ahead of Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren, Carlos Sainz in the second Ferrari and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton and his Mercedes team-mate George Russell.

Sergio Perez was eighth in the second Red Bull ahead of Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and RB’s Yuki Tsunoda, in his Faenza-based team’s home event.

Verstappen’s hard-earned win, after a difficult two days of practice, was his third at Imola, his fifth of the season and the 59th of his career, lifting him 48 points clear of Leclerc in the drivers’ title race.

“We did a great race considering how it started and I had to work hard for that,” admitted Verstappen. “The whole race I pushed flat out to make a gap.

“I felt quite strong on mediums, but on the hards, it was more difficult to manage and the last 15 laps I had no grip and I was sliding a lot.

“I could see him behind me and I am super-happy to win here today.”

Norris said: “It’s frustrating! This feels more painful. It hurts me to say so, but with one or two more laps I think I’d have had him.”

Leclerc, whose podium finish for Ferrari in their heartland was acclaimed by masses of tifosi, said: “At least a podium! Of course, I wanted to win and I didn’t make it.

“They were incredibly quick at the end, but it’s looking good for us for the rest of the season. Monaco is going to be special.”

‘I’m pushing’

On a very warm Spring day all but Perez began on medium tyres, the Mexican choosing ‘hards’ to go long after a desultory qualifying left him 11th on the grid.

Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso started from the pitlane after late suspension changes while Piastri was fifth, penalised from second for obstructing Kevin Magnussen on Saturday.

As the lights went out, Verstappen surged clear while behind him Hamilton and Perez made up places during an incident-free opening as the world champion built an early advantage.

Verstappen’s relentless pace took him five seconds clear by lap 16 ahead of Norris who led Leclerc by 1.3 with Sainz fourth, resisting Piastri. The Mercedes’ pair were sixth and seventh ahead of Perez.

Russell was the first of the leading group to pit after 21 laps, having complained his tyres were shot.

Norris was next in on lap 23, coming out behind Perez, followed by Piastri and then Verstappen, on lap 25, shortly after the Dutchman was shown a black-and-white flag for exceeding track limits. One more offence would bring a five second penalty.

Verstappen re-joined fourth behind Leclerc, Sainz and Hamilton with Norris behind him, having passed Perez, before Leclerc pitted and Sainz inherited the lead briefly before pitting with Hamilton, who had run off at Acque Minerali.

This left Verstappen back on top at half-distance with a lead of 6.2 seconds on Norris, Leclerc and Piastri.

Having eased off to preserve his tyres, Norris mounted a late charge and trimmed Verstappen’s lead on successive laps to put him under intense pressure.

With seven laps to go, he was only two seconds adrift and closing in.

“I’m pushing as hard as I can mate,” said Norris on team radio when encouraged to hunt a second victory.

Hard as he tried to turn the screw Verstappen scraped home on the day Formula One remembered the late great Ayrton Senna, who died in a crash at the circuit three decades ago.

Marc Marquez approaches the French MotoGP emboldened by his impressive display in Spain where he finished second after a thrilling duel with two-time defending champion Francesco Bagnaia. However, the 31-year-old is not talking up his chances of a seventh world crown — yet. Plagued by injuries and then vision issues in the past few years some feared his best days were behind him. For Marquez, though, the manner in which he first secured pole and then harried Bagnaia to the line in Jerez on his satellite Ducati-Gresini was another step on his way back to the top.

It was his best finish since also filling the runner-up spot in the Australian MotoGP in October, 2022.

“I won, in terms of my plan, in the path I have in my head, and I am getting better and better,” said Marquez.

“Now I must maintain my consistency from the last few races.”

Marquez, whose 59th and last win came at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in October 2021, lies just 32 points adrift of series leader Jorge Martin after four races.

However, he dismisses any talk of him being a title contender.

“For me, it is way too early,” he said. “That is not to say I don’t want to win the title, but it is too early to think of it because I know, and I already understood, I will have plenty of trouble on several tracks.

“We shall see, but for the moment it is necessary to approach the races like that.”

‘Calm me down’

Marquez, though, is surprised he is just over 30 points adrift of his compatriot Martin, who rides a Ducati-Pramac.

“I am really surprised because I had a terrible start to the campaign,” he said.

“That suggests we are racing to our limits, that there will still be a lot of zeros and the title race will be very close.

“For me, it is already a source of pride to be battling with the Ducati leaders.”

Jerez was also equally significant for Ducati factory rider Bagnaia as he had not won since the season opener in Qatar. He is now just 17 points off Martin.

The 25-year-old is seeking a third successive world title.

If successful he would be the first Italian to be a triple world champion on an Italian manufactured bike since the legendary Giacomo Agostini won his third (1966) of eight titles on the MV Agusta.

“Our goal is always to win,” Bagnaia told Speedweek.

“The season is long, and even though Jorge Martin took a lead at the start, I am confident in our ability to come back. We closed the gap, and every race counts.”

Bagnaia — a superstitious type who will as ever go through his pre-race routine “touch the bike, kiss my glove and tap the tank as it calms me down” — said this year’s campaign reminds him of his first championship winning year.

“We have collected a lot of data that should help us overcome the current problems,” he said.

“This is a similar situation to 2022, and I am confident we will succeed.”

The internet is a crazy place which often throws up surprises. One such interesting clip resurfaced on the internet on Friday, which showed ‘invisible fire’ sparking panic among racing crew during the Indianapolis 500 in 1981. The video is an old one but the term ‘invisible fire’ intrigued all and the video has received close to 2 million views in a short span of time. In the video, it can be seen that the drivers are panicking while safety crew try to extinguish the ‘invisible fire’.

While the term might seem strange, ‘invisible fire’ is caused by methanol, which burns with transparent blame in bright light and no smoke. At this particular event, the fire was caused because fuel began to go out from the refueling hose as it was loosely attached to the car of Rick Mears. The pit crew initially could not understand what happened as one of them tried to removed Mears helmet. Meanwhile, another person, covered in burning fuel, called for help. Mears, meanwhile, took matters in his won hand and and doused the fire on his racing suit with an extinguisher.

Rick Mears and four others had to be sent to the hospital. The driver had to undergo plastic surgery on face. After the incident, the fuel nozzle design in Indy cars underwent massive change.

talking about motorsports, with world champion Max Verstappen and Red Bull utterly dominating Formula One yet again, there is a distinct lack of tension ahead of Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix.

So it is perhaps fortunate that the South Florida venue will provide some glitz and glamour to distract from a season that, with Verstappen having bagged four out of five races, already looks like another procession for the winner of the last three championships.

The first two years of the Miami race, held around Hard Rock Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, attracted scores of celebrities from the world of music, film and sport.

Hailed as proof that F1 had finally cracked the American market, that buzz around the race as a place to be seen hasn’t dissipated, with tabloid newspaper reports suggesting that pop star Taylor Swift and her American footballer boyfriend Travis Kelce are planning to attend this year.

Swift got as near as anyone could get to overshadowing the NFL’s Super Bowl last year and she would certainly change the subject in the paddock from the increasing chatter about driver’s contracts.

The “transfer market” for F1 drivers has opened early this year, with seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton announcing in February that he would be switching to Ferrari next year.

Inevitably that has prompted speculation over Verstappen’s future and a possible switch to Mercedes in the wake of the internal troubles at Red Bull.

Thirty years to the day since his death following a crash that sent shockwaves around the world, Brazilians will pay homage Wednesday to Formula One superstar Ayrton Senna — a beloved symbol of national pride comparable only to compatriot Pele. Fans of the three-time Formula One world champion are expected to flock to Senna’s grave in a cemetery in his hometown of Sao Paulo, where he was laid to rest after his tragic accident at the Imola circuit on May 1, 1994.

Some will take part in a fun-run staged on the twists and turns of the Interlagos motorsport circuit, where Senna scored two emotional Formula One victories near the end of his career in 1991 and 1993.

A wave of television programs have been aired to mark the anniversary, while an exhibition titled ‘I, Ayrton Senna da Silva — 30 years’ will open in Rio de Janeiro Wednesday after a nationwide tour.

The exhibition features an artificial intelligence-powered recreation of Senna’s voice recounting the defining moments of his turbulent life and career.

‘Brazil came to a standstill’

On Rio’s famous Copacabana beach, a procession of fans old and young have been stopping to take photos with a bronze sculpture of Senna, arms aloft and waving a Brazilian flag in triumph.

Among them was Joao Paulo Bertoloni, 30 — only a baby when Senna died aged 34.

“I didn’t get to see him live, but everyone was a fan of him in my family,” Bertoloni said.

“My father, my grandparents… Everyone told me about Senna. Brazil came to a standstill on Sundays when he was racing,” the business manager said.

Marilane Mattos, 66, can still vividly recall the moment she watched on television as Senna’s Williams car hurtled off the Imola track at about 190mph and ploughed into a wall.

“It was horrible, it still makes me sad today,” she told AFP. “But I prefer to remember the good times. He was a simple guy like us.”

‘Sense of pride’

Senna’s legacy in Brazil has extended far beyond the sporting theatre.

The Ayrton Senna Institute was recognized by UNESCO in 2004 for its educational projects which aim to help children from poor neighborhoods.

“Ayrton always said that if you wanted to change things you had to start with education,” Viviane Senna, Ayrton’s sister and president of the institute, said in a recent video posted on social media.

Founded six months after Senna’s death, the institute claims to have benefited some 36 million students in 3,000 Brazilian cities and towns.

For Brazilian writer Ernesto Rodrigues, author of the biography “Ayrton: The Hero Revealed,” Senna remains an important cultural figure because he “restored self-esteem to Brazilians” at a time the country was grappling with political and economic crises.

“His name is on streets throughout the country. Every time his name is mentioned, he gives Brazilians a sense of pride. His legacy has been largely preserved,” Rodrigues said.

The Brazilian government declared three days of national mourning for Senna, who died in an Italian hospital of head injuries after the crash.

A million Brazilians turned out to pay their respects in Sao Paolo, crowding the airport and lining city streets to catch a glimpse of his coffin before a private burial.

Toto Wolff and Red Bull counterpart Christian Horner have reignited their war of words over Max Verstappen after the Mercedes boss again hinted at poaching the three-time world champion. Verstappen’s future at Red Bull was thrown into doubt last month after his father, Jos, said the team was in danger of being “torn apart” if Horner remained its principal. It came after allegations against Horner of inappropriate behaviour towards a woman colleague. He denied the claims and an internal investigation cleared him of wrongdoing.

Verstappen has publicly committed his future to Red Bull, but following the Dutchman’s dominant victory at the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday, Mercedes boss Wolff stirred the pot anew.

Wolff told reporters in Shanghai that “everyone is waiting to see what he (Verstappen) is going to do”.

“There are so many factors that play a role for a driver joining,” said Wolff, who needs to replace seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who is leaving for Ferrari next year.

“Clearly, from the most rational point of view, that’s the quickest car in the hands of the quickest driver,” said Wolff.

“But I don’t think this is the only reason you stay where you are.”

Earlier this season Wolff said that he “would love” to sign the reigning world champion Verstappen if he became available.

His latest comments triggered a prickly response from Horner, who said that Wolff should focus on trying to revitalise Mercedes following a poor start to the season by their high standards.

“Why would you want to leave this team?” Horner said.

“Mercedes are third behind their customers (McLaren and Aston Martin).

“His time would be better spent perhaps focusing on the team rather than the driver market.

“I can assure you that there is no ambiguity about where Max Verstappen will be next year.”

Max Verstappen will be hunting a “fun” 50th career victory from sixth on the grid in Sunday’s United States Grand Prix after cruising to victory for Red Bull in Saturday’s sprint race. The newly crowned three-time world champion led from pole position to the chequered flag to finish 9.465 seconds clear of revitalized seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes. Charles Leclerc came home third for Ferrari, 17.997 adrift. “The pace of the car was really good today,” said the 26-year-old Dutchman, who wrapped up his third consecutive drivers’ title with victory in Qatar earlier in October.

“But I’m going to need it tomorrow because starting P6 is going to be a bit more difficult and different from today.

“It makes it more interesting and hopefully we can have a bit of fun out there with quite a bit of passing… It won’t be easy because I need to pass five cars to win.”

Verstappen admitted he had to survive a real challenge from Leclerc at the first corner where the Monegasque driver tried to find a way through on the inside and then when Hamilton sought to maintain close contact in the opening laps.

“It was quite tight, but luckily there was a lot of space going into turn one so that definitely helped, but after that we could settle and do our own race and control the pace a bit.

“It was always around eight- or nine-tenths (to Hamilton) for a few laps, but that was controllable and once I had cleared the Drag Reduction System (DRS) zone, we settled into a rhythm.”

Verstappen might face a challenge from not only Hamilton and Mercedes, who showed much improved form with their major update package, but also Ferrari and McLaren in a race where tyre degradation and strategy are certain to be key factors.

Leclerc’s Ferrari teammate, Carlos Sainz, was the only driver to choose soft tyres, a decision that ensured the team gathered valuable data ahead of Sunday’s Grand Prix, in which Leclerc starts from pole with Verstappen sixth after he had a lap deleted in Friday’s sprint shootout for exceeding track limits.

“We need to work to try and understand everything better to be a step ahead tomorrow,” said Leclerc. “We have quite a lot of data to analyze after having the two cars on two different strategies.

“I think this will be quite a bit of a help for us because we know how the soft tyre is behaving for tomorrow so I hope we  can take advantage of that and hopefully we can win tomorrow.”

Ferrari inflicted Red Bull’s only defeat of the season when Sainz won the Singapore Grand Prix and they will bid to repeat that feat, but will face fierce competition from Mercedes and McLaren.

Lando Norris finished a close fourth for McLaren behind Leclerc and was optimistic of a strong race Sunday in his 100th Grand Prix start.

“We have the speed in the car,” he said. “And I’m happy that we can be right in this race.”

Hamilton said his sprint effort will help for Sunday.

“We will try to keep Max behind,” Hamilton said. “But ultimately I think he will be breathing down our necks before too long, with the pace that he had today.”

Runaway Formula One leader Max Verstappen dominated an intriguing floodlit qualifying session on Friday to claim pole position for the Qatar Grand Prix, which he could start as a triple world champion. It was the 26-year-old Dutchman’s 10th pole position of a commanding season for Red Bull. He wound up four-tenths of a second ahead of nearest rival George Russell, whose Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton slipped from second to fourth, and then rose to third when the two McLarens had laps scrubbed out in a confusing final flurry.

Lando Norris of McLaren was second when he crossed the line before his best late lap was deleted for exceeding track limits. His team-mate Oscar Piastri placed third before losing his lap too. He fell to sixth. Norris dropped to 10th.

Verstappen can clinch his third consecutive title before Sunday’s race by finishing sixth or better in Saturday’s sprint race.

He said he was satisfied with his performance in tricky conditions with a gusty wind blowing sand and dust across the newly re-surfaced asphalt of the Lusail International Circuit.

“It’s a great start to the weekend,” said Verstappen, who celebrated his birthday last weekend. “I’m happy to be on pole and it has been a good day for us.”

‘Working so well’

“Of course, I want to win this race whatever happens tomorrow. We have got pole and I want to win it (Sunday’s Grand Prix), but first let’s be quick and do the job tomorrow.

“It will be difficult for the tyres with all this sand on the track, but our car is working so well.”

It was the 30th pole position overall in Verstappen’s career.

After much post-session confusing, Hamilton was declared third for Mercedes ahead of Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Embattled French team-mates Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon of Alpine were seventh and eighth ahead of Valtteri Bottas of Alfa Romeo and Norris.

The qualifying session, for Sunday’s race, began with an air temperature of 32 degrees Celsius and a track temperature of 35, under the Losail lights.

Verstappen’s opening lap was swiftly beaten by Alonso before Leclerc took the initiative as several drivers fell foul of the strict track limits rules in the difficult conditions.

Leclerc and Alonso swapped fastest laps before Norris and then Verstappen set the pace.

The first qualifying session ended with Logan Sargeant of Williams missing the cut along with Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, Liam Lawson of Alpha Tauri, Kevin Magnussen of Haas and Zhou Guanyu of Alfa Romeo.

Stroll, son of team owner Lawrence Stroll, was filmed pushing his personal trainer after climbing from his car and, in a fit of pique gave only brief and rude responses to broadcasters.

A hectic second session wound up with Hamilton fastest ahead of Verstappen while Yuki Tsunoda of Alpha Tauri missed the cut in 11th ahead of Sainz, Perez, Alex Albon of Williams and Haas’s Nico Hulkenberg.

Hamilton had taken pole in qualifying at the inaugural Qatar event in 2021 and secured his career record 104th pole at the Hungarian event in July, memories to buoy him as his former team-mate Valtteri Bottas led the field into Q3.

Verstappen responded, clocking 1 minute 23.778 seconds, the best lap of the day, a full half-second ahead of Hamilton. After a season of 13 wins in 16 races, the champion had restored his total dominance.

In the title race, Hamilton is only 33 points behind the struggling Perez and with six races to go retains a good chance of finishing runner-up.

Verstappen chose to save tyres and not make a second flying run.

Norris went first without success before Russell and Piastri moved ahead of Hamilton who fell to fourth and, like Verstappen, aborted his effort in a furious finale that saw both men sliding off the racing line.
