A food delivery platform has taken a swipe at YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia and comedian Samay Raina after they found themselves in choppy waters over comments and content of the show ‘India’s Got Latent’.

Magicpin, which claims to be “India’s third largest food delivery app,” put up a road advertisement reading, “India’s Lost Talent. Comedy ki limit honi chahiye par discounts ki nahi (There should be a limit to comedy, but not to discounts).”

The ad had animated characters resembling panellists from India’s Got Latent laughing at the bottom. Sharing the image on X, Magicpin wrote, “Can we get back the magic in comedy?” along with hashtags for “standup comedy” and “India.”

The post quickly went viral.

A user commented, “Comedians need this type of humour!”

“Need of the hour,” someone said.

Another wrote, “This was epic.”

The controversy erupted after Ranveer Allahbadia, known as ‘BeerBiceps,’ made comments on Samay Raina’s show India’s Got Latent, sparking massive backlash. Amid mounting criticism, Mr Allahbadia issued an apology on Monday. But multiple complaints have been filed naming him, Mr Raina and social media influencer Apoorva Mukhija.

The Maharashtra Cyber Cell has registered a case against India’s Got Latent, filing charges against 30 to 40 individuals associated with the show. Notices are being sent to all involved. Mumbai Police also visited Mr Allahbadia’s residence as part of their investigation.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has summoned Mr Allahbadia, Mr Raina, and others over alleged derogatory remarks, with a hearing scheduled for February 17. A Parliamentary panel on information technology is also considering whether to summon the YouTuber-podcaster for questioning.

In Assam, a case has been filed against Mr Allahbadia and others, with Guwahati Joint Commissioner of Police Ankur Jain confirming that they were in touch with Mumbai Police. Notices and summons will be issued “in due course.”

The controversy has now reached Parliament. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has announced that she will raise the issue, criticising Mr Allahbadia’s remarks as “abusive language in the name of comedy.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that anyone who crosses the limits of decency will face action. Two Mumbai lawyers have already filed complaints against Ranveer Allahbadia.

The India’s Got Latent episode featuring the vulgar comments has been removed from YouTube.

The post went viral on social media, with many lauding him in the comments.

Shantanu Deshpande, the founder and CEO of men’s grooming brand Bombay Shaving Company, has expressed grave concerns over the growing trend of fast food delivery in India, underlining its negative impact on people’s health.

In a post on LinkedIn, Mr Deshpande discussed how people were suffering from the “biggest epidemic,” advising everyone to consider cooking at home.

“‘Cook time 2 min, delivery time 8 min’ A ‘qcom for food’ founder told me this and I lost my mind. We are suffering from the biggest epidemic of poor nutrition and unhealthy processed and ultra-processed food which is high on palm oil and sugar. Our grains have lost nutrition over last 50 years as we prioritized agricultural yield for nutrition,” he wrote.

The “junk food addiction” in India, fuelled by Rs 49 pizzas, Rs 20 “poison energy drinks” and Rs 30 burgers, is “taking us down the path of China and the US without the economic cover needed for health,” he said.

Mr Deshpande cautioned the investors and founders about the issue and urged them to ensure the food was “palatable.”

“Frozen purees and curries and old vegetables heated and garnished with dhaniya to look fresh and slammed in some 2 wheeler who rides like Mad Max to your door in 10 min cos you couldn’t wait another 15 min or you were too lazy to chadhao a cooker of daal chawal. And all the investors and founders are already finding fancy words for this to bake it into the next big wave of Indian commerce,” he wrote.

“Zomato and Swiggy and Zepto – please, don’t. And if you are so keen, please make the product palatable. I would LOVE it if we innovate and are able to actually give non-stale and decent food in 10 min. Massive unlock. But I don’t think we’re close to there yet,” he further said.

The post went viral on social media, with many lauding him in the comments section for raising the issue.

“Shantanu Deshpande, you’re absolutely right,” one person wrote while discussing obesity. However, Mr Deshpande replied, “I’m worried about health and nutrition, not obesity.”

Another person wrote, “Yes, I 100 per cent agree with you. I believe the only way to address this issue effectively is through strict regulations and regular blind testing. This would ensure accountability and help to save India from this upcoming hidden health pandemic.”

While a third person suggested deleting Swiggy and Zomato apps from mobile phones, Deshpande replied, “Extreme 🙂 just watch what you’re eating.”

Before concluding his post, Mr Deshpande asked regulators to “please keep an eye” on this growing trend, besides suggesting people rather opt for home-cooked food. “The gut is the epicentre of your existence. You are what you eat,” he concluded.

Zomato’s response to presence of one-dish restaurants on its platform.

Facing criticism over the presence of suspicious ‘one-dish’ restaurants on its platform, India’s food delivery giant, Zomato, has issued a response. The company said it had ‘delisted’ some of the fraudulent restaurants on its app that may have gamed the system to push ‘prohibited items’. The emergence of shady listings on Zomato had led to social media users floating several conspiracy theories, with some believing that the restaurants were a front for drug trade while others claimed that Zomato was facilitating ‘money laundering’ business.

“We have identified all such restaurants that were potentially fraudulent and have delisted them from our platform. To solve this more comprehensively, we have also investigated all other restaurants which have a very limited menu on Zomato and might have listed prohibited items or worked around a way to list prohibited items,” a Zomato spokesperson said.

“As per our policy, all restaurants listed on Zomato need to have a FSSAI license and we also actively block items such as alcohol, cigarettes/cigars/vapes from being listed on our platform,” they added.

The restaurant aggregator admitted that the said restaurants were able to game Zomato’s “checks by using generic food names such as, ‘Naughty strawberry’ and ‘Merry Berry'”.

“We have further strengthened our fraud checks to proactively identify such cases to avoid similar incidents in the future,” the company said.

What was the controversy?

Last week, social media users pointed out that such shady restaurants had come up in the northern Indian union territory of Chandigarh — offering a single dish at ‘absurdly high prices’. Some of the suspicious restaurants had no reviews while others had been bombarded with negative reviews — possibly to shield the operation from customers simply looking to order food.

“Came across some odd listings on Zomato in Chandigarh – so-called ‘restaurants’ that only offer a single dish, priced absurdly high. It’s got me wondering: could these be fronts for money laundering or some other shady business?” read the post by a Redditor.

As the post went viral, the users came up with their theories about what could have led to the emergence of such facilities.

“Those look like flavours of juice that you put into your vapes. Pricing also looks consistent,” said one user, while another added: “True. I know of an exact such operation in another city, that essentially sells vape pens/cartridges. The price is almost the same, Rs 1000- Rs 1200 per item.”

One user pointed out that all the restaurants were in the same location ‘Nayagaon’, adding to the mystery.

Amid rising consumer complaints, food regulator FSSAI on Tuesday (November 12, 2024) directed e-commerce players selling food items on their platforms to ensure a minimum shelf life of 30% or 45 days before expiry, at the time of delivery to customers.

According to an official statement, Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) convened a meeting with e-commerce Food Business operators (FBOs) to reinforce compliance requirements for e-commerce FBOs.

“The (FSSAI) CEO asked the e-commerce FBOs to adopt practices to ensure minimum shelf life of 30% or 45 days before expiry at the time of delivery to the consumer,” the statement said.

Mr. Rao, who chaired the meeting, clarified that any product claims made on e-commerce platforms must align with the information provided on the product labels and in adherence to FSSAI’s Labelling and Display Regulations.

He also cautioned the FBOs against making unsupported claims online.

“This would prevent misleading information and protect consumers’ right to accurate product details,” the regulator said.

Mr. Rao highlighted the pivotal role of online platforms in protecting consumer health and promoting transparency. He reiterated the mandate that no FBO can operate on any e-commerce platform without a valid FSSAI license or registration, emphasising the critical need for regulatory compliance.

In a move to ensure safe food handling at every level, he instructed FBOs to implement proper training programs for delivery personnel, empowering them with essential food safety and hygiene protocols.

Additionally, Mr. Rao emphasised the importance of delivering food and non-food items separately to consumers to avoid potential contamination.

In his concluding remarks, the CEO, FSSAI underscored the need for all e-commerce FBOs to adhere to food safety standards diligently.

He added that a transparent, compliant and accountable e-commerce food sector is vital for protecting consumer health and fostering confidence in digital food marketplaces.

The session was attended by over 200 participants joined both physically and virtually from across the country, underscoring the significant commitment to strengthening food safety standards within the e-commerce sector.

Earlier this month, the FSSAI asked state authorities to increase surveillance in warehouses of e-commerce operators and issue standard operating procedures (SoPs) for delivery personnel to ensure safe food to consumers.

In its 45th Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting on November 7, States and Union Territories were urged to ramp up surveillance at popular tourist destinations to ensure heightened safety standards in preparation for the peak tourist season from November through March.

Mr. Rao had asked “Food Commissioners of various states to step up surveillance on warehouses and other facilities utilised by e-commerce platforms.”

He also asked for SOPs to be issued for such warehouses, as well as delivery personnel of these platforms.

“States/UTs were asked to increase surveillance samples and were also asked to deploy Food Safety on Wheels mobile vans for this purpose,” the regulator said.
