Every deadline day is an opportunity to remember Parkinson’s Law.

C. Northcote Parkinson’s 1955 satirical observation that work expands to fill the time available for its completion was validated once again as English clubs squeezed every last second of the clock before the Premier League summer transfer window closed at 3.30 a.m. IST on Wednesday.

The biggest (read costliest) deadline-day move came as Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez swapped Chelsea’s royal blue for Manchester City’s lighter shade.

The £125 million deal came after the London outfit had reportedly set an August 14 deadline for the player it valued at £120 million. In the end, Man City got its man, and Chelsea pocketed a tidy profit on a player it bought for £107 million in 2023.

Chain reaction

Waiting until the very last moment is risky business, especially when the whole ecosystem relies on a delicate chain reaction.

A player’s transfer from one badge to another doesn’t just affect the two clubs involved. The ripple effect of that one signature may disrupt or open avenues for other teams and players in the ecosystem, setting off or cancelling a slew of incomings and outgoings by virtue of the original transfer.

In other words, Ray Bradbury’s Butterfly Effect, too, assumes utmost significance in the world of football.

Ask Chelsea, and it will tell you how it came close to signing Monaco’s Lamine Camara as Fernandez’s replacement, only for the French club to renege on the deal because of striker Folarin Balogun’s proposed departure to Everton bringing in enough cash to the club. In a late twist, Balogun chose not to move to Merseyside, a decision that left all three of Chelsea, Monaco and Everton unhappy and blindsided!

Lyon’s Malick Fofana was at the centre of one of the most dramatic deadline day transfers.

Multiple suitors

Lyon’s Malick Fofana was at the centre of one of the most dramatic deadline day transfers. After Arsenal reportedly decided not to spend big on the Belgian winger, Sunderland and Crystal Palace entered the fray. According to reports, Fofana had two private jets waiting for him at Lyon airport, one set for Sunderland, and the other for London. While Palace initially thought it had successfully hijacked Sunderland’s agreement with Fofana, the player ultimately decided to ply his trade at the Stadium of Light.

The 2026-27 Premier League deadline day had it all: a record-shattering transfer, two private jets on a runway, and a collapsed multi-club domino chain.

After all, what is deadline day without some chaos and manic buying?

European soccer body UEFA has lashed out at FIFA’s decision to suspend U.S. ‌striker Folarin Balogun’s red-card ban in the World Cup, after U.S. President Donald Trump called FIFA to ask it to review ‌the case, saying world soccer’s governing body had “crossed ‌a red line” and ‌undermined the integrity of the game.

“We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision,” UEFA said in ‌a statement on Monday.

“When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, ‌the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined.”

Reuters has reached out to FIFA for comment.

Trump had ‌asked FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review Balogun’s red card, which would have automatically suspended the player from Monday’s round of 16 clash ‌with Belgium.

FIFA suspended the implementation of the ban for a probationary period of one year, however, without rescinding the red card.

The stunning move has thrust FIFA’s disciplinary process into the ‌spotlight and prompted an angry response from Belgium.

United States striker Folarin Balogun will be available for their World Cup last-16 clash with ‌Belgium after FIFA suspended his ban for a red card on Sunday (July 5, 2026) in an unprecedented move that was welcomed by U.S. president Donald Trump.

Balogun scored his third goal of the World Cup in the 2-0 win over Bosnia but was shown a red card in the second half for planting his boot into the ankle of Tarik Muharemovic, leaving the U.S. to navigate the remainder of the game a ‌man down. The 25-year-old was sent off after a VAR review, with U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino saying it was never a sending-off, but FIFA is allowing him to play — without rescinding the ‌red card. “In line with article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the implementation of the match ‌suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year,” FIFA said in a statement.

“If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement.”

The judicial body has the discretion to fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary sanction.

‘A great injustice’

“Thank ‌you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social while the White House celebrated Balogun’s reinstatement in the squad with a post on X saying: “USA-USA-USA.”

U.S. Soccer accepted the decision. “[We] are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow,” it said ‌in a statement ahead of Monday’s (July 6, 2026) game in Seattle.

Balogun’s teammates said they only found out via social media on their way to training.

“We found out about it just coming over here,” American forward Christian Pulisic told reporters.

“At first, you’re like, ‘Oh really, is this real?’ And then ‘Oh, this is great news’.”

Belgium ‘astonished’ by FIFA decision

The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) said it was “astonished” by FIFA’s decision to declare Balogun eligible to play in the match, pointing to the rule book while it investigated all ‌potential options.

“FIFA bases its decision on Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. This provision states that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee may decide to suspend the enforcement of a previously imposed disciplinary sanction,” the RBFA said. “However, Article 66.4 of the same FIFA Disciplinary Code clearly provides that a red card [sending-off] automatically results in a suspension for the team’s next match, as has been the case for all previous red cards issued during this FIFA World Cup.”

It said the decision was in direct contradiction with the provisions of the tournament’s Regulations. “As ‌set out in Article 10.5: ‘If a player or team official is sent off as a result of a direct or indirect red card (second caution), they will automatically be suspended from their team’s subsequent match,’” the RBFA added.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo was able to play his side’s opening World Cup matches after FIFA suspended the final two games of a three-match ban last year when he was sent off in their penultimate qualifying match against Ireland.

Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo was handed a five-match ban after receiving a red card for a tackle that seriously injured Canada midfielder Ismael Kone during ‌a group match at the tournament.

In 1962, Brazil great Garrincha was sent off in the semi-final but he was cleared to play the final after a successful appeal backed by Chilean fans and President Jorge Alessandri, helping his side beat Czechoslovakia 3-1.

Folarin Balogun scored twice in the Americans’ historic three-goal first half, and the U.S. opened its first home World Cup in 32 years with its biggest win in the tournament, a dynamic 4-1 victory over Paraguay.

Christian Pulisic had an assist in a stellar first-half playmaking performance for the Americans, who enthralled their Southern California fans with an aggressive attack while streaking to a 3-0 halftime lead — the team’s largest in any World Cup game.

Gio Reyna ripped another goal in the dying moments of second-half injury time, giving the Americans four goals in a World Cup match for the first time.

FIFA World Cup 2026 | USA VS Paraguay LIVE updates

The U.S. scored only three goals combined in its four matches at the Qatar World Cup four years ago, and it had never scored more than three in a World Cup match. But the Americans were a team transformed while playing in new coach Mauricio Pochettino’s more creative system in front of a passionate, star-studded Los Angeles crowd of 70,492.

Maurício scored in the second half for Paraguay, but La Albirroja fell too far behind early in their first World Cup match in 16 years.

After the U.S. went ahead on an early own-goal created by Pulisic’s playmaking, Balogun scored in the 31st minute and again in the fifth minute of first-half injury time.

The New York-born, London-raised striker made his World Cup debut with the first multigoal performance from a U.S. player in the tournament since 1930. Balogun chose to represent the U.S. three years ago instead of staying in the English system, where he likely would have struggled to make the Three Lions’ roster — and the 24-year-old Monaco professional has swiftly provided the top-level striker play historically lacking on U.S. rosters.

Pulisic was replaced by Sebastian Berhalter at halftime, but the U.S. didn’t immediately indicate whether the AC Milan standout was injured. Pulisic appeared to signal to family in the stands that he was fine.

Pulisic created the first two U.S. goals with exceptional runs down the left side. In the seventh minute, he cleverly split two defenders and passed to Weston McKennie, whose centering touch hit Paraguay midfielder Damián Bobadilla’s outstretched foot and went in, setting off pandemonium in the SoFi Stadium stands.

The Americans gradually amplified their attack centered around Pulisic’s runs — and three minutes after an apparent goal from Balogun was erased by an offside call, Pulisic again drove the left side and got a deflected pass to the trailing Balogun, who banged it home.

With first-half injury time winding down, Malik Tillman weighted a long pass to a streaking Balogun, who held up to create space and fired a brilliant shot into the far top corner.

The Americans were less cohesive without Pulisic in the second half, but Reyna still added the finishing touch by gliding into the box and toe-flicking home his first World Cup goal. The moment was sweet for Reyna, who barely played at the Qatar World Cup amid a messy family dispute with former U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter.

Dozens of American celebrities and cultural icons turned out for the match 10 miles south of Hollywood, including Tom Cruise, George Lucas, Bill Gates, Halle Berry, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
