Egypt held their nerve to ‌move into the World Cup last 16 with a 4-2 penalty shootout win over Australia on Friday (July 3, 2026) following a 1-1 draw after extra time at Dallas Stadium.

Hossam Abdelmaguid rolled in the winning spot-kick after Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed from 12 yards for the Australians as Egypt recorded their first win ‌in a World Cup knockout match.

Egypt vs Australia Round of 32 clash highlights

Emam Ashour had given Egypt the lead with a 13th-minute header before an own goal by Mohamed Hany ‌10 minutes into the second half levelled the scores. Mohamed Salah was ‌an unexpected inclusion in Egypt’s starting line-up, the forward recovering sufficiently from a hamstring strain to take up his customary position on the right of the attack.

Cristian Volpato gave the African side an early scare with a dipping strike from distance that clipped the top of Mostafa Shoubir’s crossbar but Hossam ‌Hassan’s side were soon in front.

Jackson Irvine needlessly gave away a free kick to the left of the penalty area when he upended Mostafa Zico and, with the defence only half-clearing Ashour’s initial centre, the winger popped up to ‌head Karim Hafez’s cross beyond Patrick Beach.

Marmoush threatens

Omar Marmoush threatened briefly and Australia’s Aziz Behich forced Shoubir to drop to his right to gather before Volpato, the Socceroos’ most creative outlet in the opening half, curled a stoppage-time strike wide.

The Australians were fortunate not to go further behind within 10 seconds of the restart when Marmoush slid his shot across goal ‌with Beach beaten and they were soon level. Aiden O’Neill picked himself up after being fouled on the left to deliver an inswinging free kick into the six-yard box, prompting Hany to flick a header into his own goal.

Beach pulled off a reflex save deep into stoppage time to take the match into sinkextra-time, the Melbourne City goalkeeper pawing Ramy Rabia’s header over the bar while Haissem Hassan’s ‌effort was deflected to safety by Souttar’s outstretched knee.

An unmarked Mohamed Salah, who had been muted throughout regulation time, thumped Marmoush’s layoff over the bar three minutes into the extra period to grant Tony Popovic’s side a reprieve with Egypt increasingly dominant.

Beach made way for Mat Ryan between the posts as Popovic attempted to make use of the 34-year-old’s experience but Souttar fired the first spot-kick over the bar to hand the Egyptians an early advantage.

Mahmoud ‌Saber, Ramy Rabia and Salah were all on target for Egypt with Jackson Irvine and Awer Mabil converting for Australia before Herrington rattled the crossbar in the fourth round and Abdelmaguid stepped up to send Egypt into the last 16.

FIFA World Cup 2026 | Belgium stage stunning comeback to sink Senegal in extra time https://artifex.news/article71172041-ece/ Wed, 01 Jul 2026 23:29:00 +0000 https://artifex.news/article71172041-ece/ Read More “FIFA World Cup 2026 | Belgium stage stunning comeback to sink Senegal in extra time” »

Youri Tielemans struck a 125th-minute ‌penalty as Belgium rallied from two goals down and defeated Senegal 3-2 after extra time in their World Cup last 32 clash in Seattle early Thursday (July 2, 2026) to keep alive their title hopes that had looked dead and buried.

Senegal’s Lamine Camara slid in on Tielemans as the ball flashed across the face of goal and conceded the ‌spot kick after a video assistant referee review, with the Belgian picking out the top corner to complete an extraordinary comeback.

Belgium vs Senegal FIFA World Cup clash highlights

Habib Diarra and Ismaila ‌Sarr had given Senegal a deserved 2-0 lead and they looked to be ‌cruising through to the next round before Belgium netted twice in the final four minutes through Romelu Lukaku and Tielemans to force extra time.

Belgium now face the winner of last-32 clash between co-hosts United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the next round in Seattle on Monda (July 6, 2026).

It was cruel on Senegal, who ‌controlled much of the 90 minutes and also struck the woodwork twice, but could not see out the game.

They became the fourth African side to bow out in a narrow defeat in the last 32 after South Africa, Ivory Coast and ‌the Democratic Republic of Congo, and will wonder how they managed to let this one slip.

Senegal were inches away from the lead when Ismail Jakobs’ cross from the left was only parried by Thibaut Courtois, but a stretching Sarr could only steer the loose ball onto the post.

When the African side did break the deadlock in the 25th minute it was no surprise. Sadio Mane’s cross ‌was headed goalwards by Sarr, but his effort came off the post again.

This time the loose ball fell kindly for Diarra, and he side-footed home from seven yards.

Maxim De Cuyper forced an excellent save from Senegal goalkeeper Mory Diaw with a shot that looked to be heading into the top corner as Belgium trailed at the break.

Lukaku on at halftime

Belgium brought on Lukaku for the ineffective Charles De Ketelaere at halftime, ‌but were soon 2-0 down.

A stunning long pass from Moussa Niakhate was brilliantly controlled on the chest of Sarr, who held off two defenders before thundering the ball into the net in the 51st minute.

Belgium struggled to create clear-cut chances until the final five minutes, and almost out of nowhere turned the game on its head by netting twice in three minutes.

First Lukaku turned the ball in at the near post from Thomas Meunier’s low cross and Leandro Trossard’s ball into the ‌box from deep was headed into the net by Tielemans.

Those two had been involved in a heated exchange earlier in the match but it was all smiles and hugs when the equaliser went in, before Tielemans was central again in the winner. (Reporting by Sam Tobin Editing by Christian Radnedge)
