As many as 1,218 cases have been booked against individuals involved in the manufacture, transportation, and sale of illicit liquor in just 20 days in a Statewide crackdown carried out by Excise officials in Telangana. Significant quantities of illicit liquor, ganja and other narcotic substances have been seized.

According to officials, joint operations were conducted by the Excise Department, State Task Force (STF), District Task Force (DTF), Enforcement teams and the Drugs Control Administration (DCA) as part of a coordinated three-pronged enforcement drive targeting illicit liquor production, bar violations and drug-related activities.

During the operations, 4,643 litres of illicit liquor were seized, while 69,220 litres of jaggery wash used in the manufacture of illicit liquor were destroyed. In addition, 45,994 kilograms of jaggery was confiscated from various locations.

In separate drug-related enforcement actions, authorities seized 244 kilograms of ganja along with MDMA and other narcotic substances during the raids conducted across different districts.

Officials also carried out inspections at approximately 15 pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing companies to monitor the misuse of controlled substances, including alprazolam, fentanyl and mephedrone among others.

In Hyderabad and Rangareddy, officials inspected 47 bars following complaints of regulatory violations, and reports recommending action against several establishments have been submitted to higher authorities.

Further investigation is under way.

Trump signs executive order to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China https://artifex.news/article69170630-ece/ Sat, 01 Feb 2025 22:57:09 +0000 https://artifex.news/article69170630-ece/ Read More “Trump signs executive order to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China” »

U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday (February 1, 2025) signed an order to impose stiff tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China, fulfilling a campaign promise but raising the prospect of increased prices for American consumers.

Mr. Trump is declaring an economic emergency to put duties of 10% on all imports from China and 25% on imports from Mexico and Canada — America’s largest trading partners — except for a 10% rate on Canadian oil.

The White House said Mr. Trump’s order also includes a mechanism to escalate the rates if the countries retaliate against the U.S., as they have threatened.

Mr. Trump says the tariffs are to force the countries to do more to stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S., but also dovetail with his embrace of protectionist measures to boost domestic manufacturing and as a potential source of revenue for the federal government.

“You see the power of the tariff,” Mr. Trump told reporters Friday. “Nobody can compete with us because we have by far the biggest piggy bank.”

The Republican president is making a major political bet that his actions will not worsen inflation, cause financial aftershocks that could destabilise the worldwide economy or provoke a voter backlash. AP VoteCast, an extensive survey of the electorate in last year’s election, found that the U.S. was split on support for tariffs.

It is possible that the tariffs could be short-lived if Canada and Mexico can reach a deal with Mr. Trump to more aggressively address illegal immigration and fentanyl smuggling. Mr. Trump’s move against China is also tied to fentanyl and comes on top of existing import taxes.

Mr. Trump is honouring promises he made in the 2024 White House campaign that is at the core of his economic and national security philosophy, though his allies had played down the threat of higher import taxes as mere negotiating tactics.

The president is preparing more import taxes in a sign that tariffs will be an ongoing part of his second term. On Friday, he mentioned imported computer chips, steel, oil and natural gas, as well as against copper, pharmaceutical drugs and imports from the European Union — moves that could essentially pit the U.S. against much of the global economy.

Mr. Trump’s intentions drew a swift response from financial markets, with the S&P 500 stock index slumping after his announcement Friday.

It is unclear how the tariffs could affect the business investments that Mr. Trump said would happen because of his plans to cut corporate tax rates and remove regulations. Tariffs tend to raise prices for consumers and businesses by making it more expensive to bring in foreign goods.

Inhaling fentanyl – approved in the US for use as anaesthetic – can cause irreversible brain damage

New Delhi:

Inhaling the synthetic opioid fentanyl — approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use as pain relief and anaesthetic — can cause irreversible brain damage, according to a new study today.

Fentanyl is cheap, readily available, and 50 times more potent than heroin, warned doctors in the journal BMJ Case Reports after treating a 47-year-old man found unresponsive in his hotel room after snorting the drug.

“We know very well the classic opiate side effects: respiratory depression, loss of consciousness, disorientation,” said lead author Chris Eden, now a second-year resident in internal medicine at the Oregon Health & Science University

“But we don’t classically think of it causing possibly irreversible brain damage and affecting the brain, as it did in this case,” he added.

The middle-aged man was diagnosed with toxic leukoencephalopathy by fentanyl inhalation, which means the substance caused inflammation and damage to the brain’s white matter. This led to unconsciousness and also to potentially irreversible loss of brain function, or possibly death.

The condition is manifest in various signs and symptoms, the most obvious of which are neurological and behavioural changes, ranging from mild confusion to stupor, coma, and death.

Although the recovery is slow, some people will recover fully, while others will progressively get worse.

In this case, a brain scan revealed white matter inflammation, swelling, and injury in his cerebellum — part of the brain responsible for gait and balance.

The man remained bed-bound for 18 days later and was fed via a tube. Doctors prescribed several different drugs to treat urinary incontinence, kidney injury, cognitive impairment, suspected opioid withdrawal, pain and agitation, and pneumonia.

After 26 days, he underwent rehabilitation, and after another month, he returned home. However, outpatient physiotherapy and occupational therapy continued.

The study reported that it took him almost a year to fully recover and return to work full-time.
