The countdown for the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and Dubai is about to end, with the first match of the marquee event set to be held on February 19. Ahead of the start of the campaign, certain cracks in the team have apparently started to emerge, with former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali claiming that not all is right within the side. According to Basit, Pakistan skipper Mohammad Rizwan isn’t happy with Faheem Ashraf‘s selection in the team for an event as big as the Champions Trophy.

A lot has changed in the Pakistan team over the last few months. From the coaching staff to the selection committee, Pakistan players have had significant changes to adapt to over this period. While some can be adjusted, any skipper would want the kind of players in his team he has confidence in. But, with Rizwan, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

“Rizwan clearly showed he was not happy with Faheem Ashraf being included in the team. He didn’t give him the ball after just two overs and only used him again when the match was already lost,” Basit said on his YouTube channel.

Ashraf was part of Pakistan’s XI in the tri-series ODI final, where he scored 21 runs and conceded 16 from just 2.2 overs. The player doesn’t seem to be ready for the grand stage yet, and Rizwan’s handling of him in the final hinted at the same.

As for Ashraf’s ODI record, he has only claimed 26 wickets in 35 matches at an average of 46.31. His economy rate during this phase has been 5.18.

With the bat, the all-rounder has only scored 246 runs at an average of 11.18. The figures, hence, doesn’t justify his selection to Pakistan’s Champions Trophy squad. But, with the new selection committee in place, a lot has changed in Pakistan cricket when it comes to the power dynamics.

“Dosti-Yaari With Umpires”: Babar Azam’s Teammate Faheem Ashraf Hints Officials Giving Favours https://artifex.news/dosti-yaari-with-umpires-babar-azams-teammate-faheem-ashraf-hints-officials-giving-favours-6617272/ Sat, 21 Sep 2024 11:26:09 +0000 https://artifex.news/dosti-yaari-with-umpires-babar-azams-teammate-faheem-ashraf-hints-officials-giving-favours-6617272/ Read More ““Dosti-Yaari With Umpires”: Babar Azam’s Teammate Faheem Ashraf Hints Officials Giving Favours” »

Pakistan cricket team star Faheem Ashraf, who has played 17 Tests, 34 ODIs and 48 T20Is, has made a revelation about the state of cricket in the country. Answering a question on the controversial umpiring in the domestic Champions Cup, Ashraf,  who is playing for Dolphins, said something very interesting. He said that at the domestic level umpires have an understanding with the players as they are ‘friends’.

“All the good umpires in Pakistan are gone  from domestic cricket. Umpiring in domestic cricket is also like this (poor) but because there is no TV coverage, no one has the idea. In domestic, sometimes the batters say that they are not out even after getting out, while the bowlers say the opposite. Now (with the Champions Cup) everyone knows at what level umpiring is in Pakistan. Good or bad, everyone knows now. Those who are appointing them have to see now who should be umpiring at what level,” Faheem Ashraf told the media.

“In domestic cricket, umpires ke saath dosti yaari hai (we are friends with the umpires). Hum umpire se bach jaate hai aur woh humara no. le lete hai. (Sometimes we get saved by umpires even take our phone numbers). I am talking straight). But there is no friendship here (in the Champions Cup) because everything is on the (TV) screen. Everybody is watching.”

Pakistan’s white-ball head coach, Gary Kirsten, emphasised the need to establish the same brand of cricket in the domestic format that is required in the international circuit for success, sources told Geo News.

Kirsten met the mentors and the head coaches of the teams in Paksitan’s domestic Champions Cup in Faisalabad. Misbah-ul-Haq, Saqlain Mushtaq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shoaib Malik, and Waqar Younis are the five mentors in the Champions Cup. Sources told Geo News that during the meeting, various aspects of cricket were discussed in the presence of high-performance coach David Reid and Director of High Performance and the Champions Cup Nadeem Khan.

The Pakistan cricket team has announced their playing XI for the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match against India on Sunday. There were no changes to the side that defeated Bangladesh in their first Super 4 match as the Babar Azam-led side decided to stich to the winning combination. It means that there will no comeback for Mohammad Nawaz after he was replaced by the fast bowling all-rounder Faheem Ashraf. Pakistan also decided to make no changes to their in-form pace attack of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah who have been enjoying a brilliant run of form in Asia Cup 2023.

Babar will once again back his deadly pace trio to achieve a similar feat against their biggest rival.

“I am proud of my pacers. We dominate everyone. Big matches and tournaments are won by fast bowlers. I have my belief in them. The secret behind their success is that they stay united and have belief in themselves. If one does not have a good day, the other one steps up and covers up for it,” said Babar in the pre-match press conference.

In their first encounter of the Asia Cup group stage, India posted a total of 266, but rain intervened and washed out the game completely.

With clouds once again looming over Colombo, Babar said that the team is focused on what it can control. “We are focusing on things we can control. It rained four days. The way the sun is out, does not look like it will rain. But we will focus on utilising whatever time we get to the best of our abilities,” he said.

Pakistan (Playing XI) against India: Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam (c), Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Agha Salman, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf.
