Arsenal’s dreams of a first Premier League crown in 20 years were dashed as their 2-1 win against Everton was rendered irrelevant by Manchester City’s title-clinching victory over West Ham. Mikel Arteta‘s side had gone into the last day of the season needing to beat Everton at the Emirates Stadium and hope City drew or lost in Manchester if they were to steal the title in miraculous fashion. But the Gunners were forced to settle for second place after relentless champions City beat West Ham 3-1.

Idrissa Gueye put Everton in front late in the first half before Takehiro Tomiyasu quickly equalised.

By the time Kai Havertz scored Arsenal’s winner in the 89th minute, City were already well on course to retain the title.

In a post-match speech to Arsenal fans, a visibly emotional Arteta said: “This team are unbelievable. You started this by believing in us. Please keep pushing, keep inspiring them.

“Don’t be sad. We want much more than that and we’re going to get it.”

Arsenal had been almost flawless in 2024, with 16 wins and one draw, away to City, in their 18 league matches.

However, one costly slip-up in a 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa last month proved decisive in denying them a first title since Arsene Wenger’s ‘Invincibles’ in 2004.

They finished two points behind City, who have won an unprecedented four successive titles and six in the last seven years.

Arsenal staff were seen rehearsing a mock title presentation at the Emirates on Saturday, complete with replicas of the trophy and medals, as well as signs emblazoned with the slogan ‘Premier League champions’.

But there would be no genuine title party in north London as Arteta’s heart-broken players were forced to accept their fate.

Arsenal fans had strolled down the sun-baked Holloway Road towards the Emirates more in hope than expectation of seeing a title-winning team.

Some even wore West Ham shirts rather their own club’s in a nod to the favour required from their London rivals 200 miles to the north.

A raucous rendition of the club’s ‘North London forever’ anthem before kick-off took the atmosphere to fever pitch.

Silence in stands

Despite the absence of injured star Bukayo Saka, Arsenal should have been ahead in the opening moments when Tomiyasu nodded wide from close-range.

However at that exact second, the mood went completely flat as news filtered through of Phil Foden‘s second minute opener for City.

A resigned hush settled over the sell-out 60,000 crowd, but Arsenal did their best to refocus.

Foden’s second goal in the 18th minute rendered the Arsenal faithful mute as Everton fans taunted them with chants of “you nearly won the league”.

Everton took the lead in the 40th minute when Gueye’s free-kick took a wicked deflection off Declan Rice‘s head as he jumped to block the ball, looping past wrong-footed Arsenal keeper David Raya into the far corner.

To their credit, the Gunners refused to surrender, equalising just three minutes later when Tomiyasu met Martin Odegaard‘s pass with a fine finish that whistled past Jordan Pickford from just inside the area.

Arsenal fans let out a defiant roar when they heard Mohammed Kudus had reduced the deficit for West Ham late in the first half.

They were briefly celebrating again after a false rumour spread that West Ham had equalised.

Dragged from despair to hope and back again within seconds, Arsenal were four points behind City in the ‘as it stands’ table at half-time.

Arsenal’s players gathered in a huddle as they prepared to make one final push in the second half, but Havertz wasted two chances to give them life, nodding wide and then heading against the bar.

Rodri‘s 59th minute goal for City was met with silence in the Emirates stands.

And when Havertz stabbed home in the closing stages, Arsenal had already come to terms with the end of their title hopes.

Manchester City won an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title on Sunday as Phil Foden’s double inspired a 3-1 victory over West Ham. No side in the history of the English top flight had ever won four successive titles, but City have become accustomed to rewriting the record books under Pep Guardiola. The Catalan coach has masterminded six Premier League wins in the past seven seasons. In four of those years, City have also surpassed 90 points. They were pushed this season to deny Arsenal a first title since 2003/04.

The Gunners celebrated a 0-0 draw at the Etihad last month that kept them one point in front of City with nine games to play.

But the champions were relentless in the run-in, winning  their final nine league games, scoring 33 goals.

Guardiola conceded City had felt the pressure in a nervy 2-0 win at Tottenham in midweek that kept the destiny of the title in their own hands.

In the same scenario two years ago, they needed a remarkable late fightback from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa 3-2 on the final day.

There was far less drama as West Ham melted under the baking Manchester sun in David Moyes’ final game in charge of the Hammers.

Foden was recently crowned the football writers’ player of the year for his best-ever goalscoring season and ended any suspense after just 79 seconds.

The England international arrowed a blistering drive into the top corner to ensure there was no nervous wait for the title party to get started.

Foden doubled City’s lead inside 20 minutes with another cool left-footed finish from Jeremy Doku’s cross for his 27th goal of the season.

City should have been out of sight before half-time as Alphonse Areola denied Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland failed to turn in from point-blank range.

Out of nowhere, there was a twist in the tale of the first half when, from a West Ham corner, Mohammed Kudus’ outrageous overhead kick flew high past Stefan Ortega.

Haaland claimed his second Golden Boot in as many seasons in the Premier League despite a day to forget in front of goal.

The Norwegian missed a huge chance to restore the home side’s two-goal cushion when he spooned over another inviting Doku cross.

City swiftly restored order at the start of the second period and fittingly it was Rodri, himself a player of the year contender, who delivered the knockout blow to Arsenal’s title hopes.

The Spaniard has not been on the losing side for club or country since March 2023.

City’s only three Premier League defeats came in the three games the 27-year-old was suspended.

This time Areola should have done better as the Frenchman failed to turn Rodri’s tame effort round the post.

City could cruise to the finish line and extend a remarkable 35-game unbeaten streak in all competitions from open play.

The only blip on that run was a penalty shootout defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals that  denied Guardiola’s men the chance of back-to-back trebles.

They can make it double next weekend when Manchester United have the unenviable task of stopping their local rivals in the FA Cup final.

By achieving a degree of league dominance never seen before, City have made their case to be considered the greatest side English football has produced.

There was an anti-climactic end as City players had to tell fans to get off the pitch before the full-time whistle.

Thousands of supporters  poured onto the field at the end despite pleas from the club to stay off the playing surface.

Everton secured their first win in a Merseyside derby at Goodison Park since 2010 to leave Liverpool’s Premier League title aspirations in ruins after a 2-0 defeat on Wednesday. Defeat leaves Jurgen Klopp’s men still three points adrift of leaders Arsenal and only one point in front of defending champions Manchester City, who have two games in hand. “We need a crisis at City and Arsenal and we need to win football games,” said Klopp of his side’s shot at the title with four games to go of his reign.

Goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin took Everton eight points clear of the relegation zone.

The Toffees now look certain to extend their 70-year stay in the English top flight despite being deducted eight points on two charges of breaching financial rules.

Klopp had never lost on his previous eight visits to Goodison but his final taste of the Merseyside derby was a bitter one.

Hopes of a glorious goodbye for the German after a nearly nine-year tenure that has transformed the club’s fortunes are fading fast.

“If we play like today we have no chance to consider ourselves in the race,” said Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

“I think everyone has to look in the mirror and look at their performance and if they’ve given everything. Do they really want to win the league?”

According to reports, Feyenoord boss Arne Slot is being lined up as Klopp’s successor and the past few weeks have exposed weaknesses that need addressing in a huge summer for the Liverpool hierarchy.

‘Energy, commitment’

The Reds have won just one of their last four league games and have also bowed out of the FA Cup and Europa League in recent weeks.

Klopp made six changes after resting a number of key players for Sunday’s 3-1 win at Fulham but did not get the response he desired.

Buoyed by their weekend win over Nottingham Forest to pull clear of the relegation zone, Everton are a side transformed from the one that went 13 Premier League games without a win between December and April.

“Delighted with the performance of our players and delighted for the Evertonians,” said Everton boss Sean Dyche.

“They’re a good side, we know that. The commitment and energy from us had to be there.”

Slow starts have been a recurring factor as Liverpool’s quest for four trophies has unravelled.

Everton thought they had a penalty in the opening minutes when Calvert-Lewin was tripped by Alisson Becker but VAR intervened to save the visitors as the striker was offside.

Alisson then clawed away a Calvert-Lewin header and Ben Godfrey nodded wide as Liverpool struggled to cope with Everton’s threat from set-pieces.

More comical defending from the Reds led to the opener on 27 minutes.

Alexis Mac Allister’s mishit fell perfectly for Branthwaite and the defender’s effort went in off the post despite Alisson’s best efforts.

Going behind woke Liverpool from their slumber and only a combination of wasteful finishing and Jordan Pickford preserved Everton’s lead until half-time.

Darwin Nunez blasted straight at the England number one when clean through before the Uruguayan teed up Luis Diaz to fire too close to Pickford.

Mohamed Salah‘s loss of form has come at the worst possible time for Liverpool’s title challenge and the Egyptian sliced another good opening well over the bar.

Liverpool were camped in the Everton half after the break, yet the hosts pulled further clear just before the hour mark from another dead ball.

Calvert-Lewin was afforded a free header at the back post to power home Dwight McNeil’s corner.

Liverpool’s night was summed up when Diaz’s powerful effort came back off the post with Pickford finally beaten.

But it was Klopp who was crestfallen come the final whistle as he looks set to depart Anfield with just one Premier League title to his name.

Premier League strugglers Everton revealed an 89.1 million pounds ($112 million) loss for the 2022-23 season in their latest financial accounts on Sunday. Everton’s losses were a significant increase from the 2021-22 season, when their accounts showed a 44.7 million pounds deficit. The Goodison Park club have blamed the indefinite suspension of sponsorship deals with key commercial partners as mitigation for the increased loss. Everton’s latest accounts, which also show heavy investment in the club’s new stadium, comes at a time when their finances are under scrutiny.

The Toffees are due to find out before April 8 the verdict of a second charge of breaching the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.

They could be hit with a further points deduction in addition to the six they have already lost for breaches related to the 2021-22 season.

Under PSR regulations, clubs can lose a maximum of 105 million pounds over a three-season period, or 35 million pounds per campaign, before facing sanctions.

Beaten 2-1 at Bournemouth on Saturday, Everton are currently 16th in the Premier League table.

Sean Dyche’s side sit just three points above the relegation zone with nine games left.

Under-fire majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri said earlier this week that he remains confident the protracted takeover of the club by 777 Partners will be completed soon.

Manchester United kept alive their faint hopes of finishing in the Premier League’s top four with a 2-0 win against Everton, while Arsenal prepared for their chance to seize top spot later on Saturday. United stars Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford sealed the points with first half penalties at Old Trafford. Erik ten Hag’s team are now eight points adrift of fourth placed Aston Villa and three behind fifth placed Tottenham in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League. Everton sit four points above the relegation zone as their winless league run extended to 11 games.

Back-to-back defeats to Fulham and Manchester City had put a huge dent in United’s top four ambitions.

With Villa and Tottenham facing off on Sunday, they made the most of Everton’s mistakes to close on their rivals.

Alejandro Garnacho was the difference between the sides as his quick feet twice provoked spot-kicks.

James Tarkowski was the first Everton defender lured into a mistimed challenge on Garnacho after 10 minutes and Fernandes rolled home his eighth goal of the season.

Garnacho danced through a series of challenges in the 36th minute before he was chopped down by Ben Godfrey.

Fernandes passed over penalty duties to Rashford and Jordan Pickford was unable to deny the forward, who fired home his fifth goal in nine league games.

Saluting Garnacho’s impact, Ten Hag said: “I love to work with Garnacho and many other players in the squad but he is a player who likes a challenge.

“Brave, confident and our job is to push him to high level but he is doing this. He has high potential.”

With leaders Liverpool facing second placed Manchester City in a blockbuster clash at Anfield on Sunday, Arsenal have the opportunity to move into first place for 24 hours at least.

Third placed Arsenal would move one point clear of Liverpool if they beat Brentford at the Emirates Stadium in Saturday’s late game.

Mikel Arteta‘s side have won their last seven league matches, scoring 31 goals in the process, to boost their bid for a first title since 2004.

Luton earn priceless point

Third bottom Luton rescued a priceless 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace thanks to Cauley Woodrow‘s last-gasp leveller.

Oliver Glasner’s side struck in the 11th minute when Luton’s Alfie Doughty played a poor back-pass and Daniel Munoz teed up Jean-Philippe Mateta to flick home.

But Woodrow levelled from Andros Townsend‘s cross six minutes into stoppage-time to leave Luton three points from safety.

Bottom of the table Sheffield United blew a two-goal lead as Bournemouth hit back to rescue a 2-2 draw at the Vitality Stadium.

Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke missed a 14th minute penalty awarded for a foul by Tom Davies, the striker slipping in his run-up and ballooning the spot-kick over the bar.

Gustavo Hamer put United ahead in the 28th minute with a close-range finish after Jayden Bogle’s shot was parried.

Jack Robinson bagged the Blades’ second in the 64th minute, netting from close-range after Bournemouth keeper Neto punched the ball against Solanke.

But Dango Ouattara got one back with a header from a 74th minute corner and Bournemouth equalised in stoppage-time when Enes Unal stabbed home to claim his first goal for the club.

Wolves improved their prospects of qualifying for Europe next season with a 2-1 win against Fulham at Molineux.

Rayan Ait Nouri lashed into the roof of the net from Toti’s cut-back into the area in the 52nd minute.

Nelson Semedo’s long-range shot took a hefty deflection off Tom Cairney for a 67th minute own goal and Alex Iwobi’s stoppage-time effort was no consolation for Fulham.

Everton face a 12-point deduction after an investigation into alleged breaches of financial rules by the Premier League club, according to a report on Wednesday. The Daily Telegraph said Premier League chiefs have asked an independent commission to impose the severe sanction, which would be the largest points penalty in the history of the competition. Losing 12 points would leave Everton on minus-five points at the bottom of this season’s table.

Sean Dyche’s side are currently in 16th place with seven points after losing six of their first nine games.

The Premier League referred Everton to the commission in March over an alleged breach of its profitability and sustainability rules over a period ending with the 2021-22 season.

Top-flight clubs are permitted to lose a maximum of 105 million pounds ($127 million) over a three-year period or face sanctions.

Everton said in a statement issued on the day that news of the referral was confirmed: “The club strongly contests the allegation of non-compliance and together with its independent team of experts is entirely confident that it remains compliant with all financial rules and regulations.

“Everton is prepared to robustly defend its position to the commission. The club has, over several years, provided information to the Premier League in an open and transparent manner and has consciously chosen to act with the utmost good faith at all times.”

Everton have recorded annual losses for five consecutive years, more than 430 million pounds in total over the period.

The club are the subject of a takeover bid by American private investment firm 777 Partners, which last week denied a New York Times report that its bid had stalled because of a failure to supply information to the Financial Conduct Authority.

Arsenal finally ended their six-year wait for a Premier League victory at Everton as Leandro Trossard fired the title-chasing Gunners to a 1-0 success on Sunday. Mikel Arteta‘s side had to work hard for their first win at Goodison Park since 2017, with Belgian forward Trossard settling a scrappy encounter midway through the second half. Arsenal were not at their fluent best but they earned their fourth win in five games this season by matching Everton’s physical approach. Arteta has warned his players they would only end their Everton curse if they are willing to put their bodies on the line and they rose to that challenge. After leaving it late to beat Manchester United in their previous game before the international break, this was another tense affair for Arsenal.

But Trossard’s goal lifted unbeaten the north Londoners into fourth place, two points behind leaders Manchester City as they aim to avenge last season’s late collapse in the title race.

Winless Everton remain in the relegation zone as they face up to another relegation battle after narrowly beating the drop in the last two seasons.

Sean Dyche’s team headed into the game on the back of the news that the club is set to have new owners after Farhad Moshiri agreed to sell his 94 percent stake to American investment fund 777 Partners.

The takeover would bring to an end the tumultuous tenure of British-Iranian Moshiri, who first invested in 2016.

Everton’s new owners got an early glimpse into the size of the task facing them as the Toffees suffered a fourth defeat in their opening five league games for the first time since 2005-06.

Arteta, a former Everton midfielder, has no such worries as Arsenal prepare for their return to the Champions League after a six-year absence against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

The Spaniard was rewarded with a clean-sheet from keeper David Raya, who made his Arsenal debut following his move from Brentford as Aaron Ramsdale dropped to the bench.

Raya was one of two changes, with Fabio Vieira making his first start since April in place of Kai Havertz.

Gabriel Martinelli thought he had given Arsenal the lead their dominance deserved when he slotted home from close-range in the 19th minute, but his effort was disallowed for offside against Eddie Nketiah in the build-up.

Gabriel’s pass had bounced off Everton forward Beto when Nketiah was ruled to be interfering with play, much to Arsenal’s disgust.

Adding insult to injury for Martinelli, the Brazilian forward limped off with a muscle injury soon after that incident.

Arsenal were in such total command that Everton went the first half an hour without a single touch inside the visitors’ penalty area.

Everton appealed in vain for a penalty when Abdoulaye Doucoure broke into the area and went to ground under William Saliba’s challenge.

Ben White’s effort was saved by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford, who produced an even better stop to keep out Marin Odegaard’s rocket soon after half-time.

Everton’s Arnaut Danjuma fired onto the roof of the net from distance, but Arsenal finally made their pressure pay off in the 69th minute.

A flurry of passes opened up the Everton defence and Bukayo Saka deftly clipped the ball into Trossard, who guided a composed finish into the far corner for his first league goal this season.
