Erik Ten Hag Faces Manchester United Judgement Day As Manchester City Eye History In FA Cup Final https://artifex.news/erik-ten-hag-faces-manchester-united-judgement-day-as-manchester-city-eye-history-in-fa-cup-final-5733236/ Fri, 24 May 2024 04:08:58 +0000 https://artifex.news/erik-ten-hag-faces-manchester-united-judgement-day-as-manchester-city-eye-history-in-fa-cup-final-5733236/ Read More “Erik Ten Hag Faces Manchester United Judgement Day As Manchester City Eye History In FA Cup Final” »

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag hopes to bolster his chances of avoiding the sack by ruining Manchester City’s history bid in the FA Cup final on Saturday. For the second successive season, Wembley will stage a Manchester derby in the showpiece fixture. Last year, City beat United 2-1 in the final on route to an incredible treble-winning campaign that included Premier League and Champions League glory. City remain England’s pre-eminent force, as they showed by clinching an unprecedented fourth successive Premier League title last weekend.

United left Wembley still optimistic about the future despite that defeat 12 months ago because Ten Hag had ended their six-year trophy drought by winning the League Cup earlier in the season.

But the Red Devils return to north London shaken by a turbulent campaign that leaves the Dutchman fighting to save his job.

United finished eighth in the Premier League — their lowest final position since 1990 — and failed even to make it out of the Champions League group stage.

Ten Hag has blamed United’s woes on injuries, but that might not convince the club’s new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe to keep faith with him.

The Dutch coach reportedly caused friction among his squad after clashing with Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford, setting the tone for a series of embarrassing defeats against Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Fulham, Copenhagen and Galatasaray among others.

United only made it to the FA Cup final after blowing a three-goal lead and surviving a penalty shootout against second- tier Coventry in a semi-final that underlined the flaws in Ten Hag’s erratic team.

England boss Gareth Southgate, former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino and Ipswich chief Kieran McKenna have all been linked with the Old Trafford job.

Ten Hag’s hopes of staying at United into a third season would be improved if they can spoil City’s bid to become the first English club to win both the Premier League and FA Cup two years in a row.

“I came here to win trophies,” Ten Hag said. “I’m just focusing on the job I have to do. That is first to win the game on Saturday and then keep going in the project.”

‘Fight until the end’

Beaten in six of the past seven Manchester derbies, United must lift the Cup for the first time in eight years to avoid their first season without European action since 2014/15.

A Europa League place is hardly the prize United fans dream of, but Andre Onana, the club’s goalkeeper, wants to repay their support with victory at Wembley.

Onana, who has endured an error-strewn first campaign at United, said: “It’s been a difficult season for them and for us.

“For me, it was difficult at the start and they were behind me so I’m very thankful. Let’s end on Saturday at Wembley. We will fight until the end.”

City’s dominant reign in the Premier League has extended to six titles in seven years, a dynastic spell that has led many pundits label them the greatest English team of all time.

Pep Guardiola’s men pipped Arsenal by two points after winning their last nine league games, leaving them on the brink of more history at Wembley this weekend.

“To do what we’ve done year in, year out, I don’t think many teams would be able to do that, especially in this Premier League,” City captain Kyle Walker said as he contemplated a potential second successive double.

Walker believes Guardiola’s drive and intensity are central to City’s seemingly unquenchable thirst for success.

“I think it starts from the manager, first and foremost. He’s addicted to winning. He is addicted and it rubs off on us,” he said.

Ominously for United, City playmaker Bernardo Silva said his side, who have won the FA Cup twice in the Guardiola era, are at their best when the stakes are highest.

“Sometimes at the beginning of the season when we don’t have that much pressure, the team relaxes when it shouldn’t and at the end of the season we always compensate for it,” he said.

Phil Foden says Manchester City will forever be part of English football history if they clinch a fourth successive Premier League title on Sunday. Pep Guardiola’s side are in pole position for a sixth English crown in seven seasons heading into Sunday’s final round of fixtures. City are two points ahead of second placed Arsenal and will lift the Premier League trophy once again if they beat West Ham at the Etihad Stadium or if the Gunners fail to defeat Everton. It would be an unprecedented achievement in English top-flight history if City make it four successive titles.

Not even the great Liverpool teams of the 1970s and 1980s, the Alex Ferguson’s dynastic Manchester United or Arsenal’s greatest sides could manage that remarkable feat.

England forward Foden believes it might never happen again if City get their hands on the silverware.

The Football Writers’ Association player of the year, who missed Thursday night’s ceremony in London to focus on City’s preparations, said: “It’s history and I don’t think I can ever see it being done again.

“It’s something the team knows, the team understands and we’re looking forward to trying to get it done.”

After winning the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup last season, City are chasing the double this term.

They face Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley on May 25 before Foden turns his attention to the European Championship in Germany.

“If we can win these next two finals, then go into the tournament (Euro 2024) full of confidence,” Foden said.

“We’ll give everything to try and achieve success and try and do the Premier League four times which has never been done before. It would mean a lot to us.

“I’m delighted with how I’m performing and now it’s one last push on Sunday, one more game to go to try and win the league.”

Erling Haaland admits he will “keep on missing chances” even as he rewrites Manchester City’s record books but insists he will shut out the critics as he targets perfection. The prolific Norwegian has scored a staggering 80 goals in just 84 games since joining City in 2022, winning the treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup in his first season at the club. He already has 28 goals in all competitions in the current campaign, though he endured a relative drought earlier this season, failing to score in six out of seven games. Haaland, who missed most of December and January with a foot injury, netted the final goal in City’s 3-1 win against Manchester United on Sunday — but only after an astonishing miss on the stroke of half-time.

“I’ve been missing,” he said Tuesday, on the eve of the second leg of City’s Champions League last-16 tie against Copenhagen, with City 3-1 up after the first leg.

“I miss a lot of chances. I will still keep on missing chances, I will still score goals so I’ll probably miss a big chance in the future as well and people are going to criticise me and what can I do then?

“Should I think of that? No. I should focus on scoring more goals and helping the team.”

The 23-year-old admitted he still has room for improvement despite his phenomenal numbers.

“There’s a lot of things I can become better at, everything by the way,” he said.

“People say I’m good at scoring goals but I missed the biggest chance in the world ever two days ago so I can also become better at that.”

The Norwegian said he had worked on the mental side of his game but admitted it was tough to cope with lean spells.

“It’s with everything in life — if you over-think something, it’s not good, if you stress in your life it’s not good,” he said.

“My focus is to become the best possible version of myself and the main thing then is the mental part.”

Haaland was asked at Tuesday’s press conference whether he was happy in Manchester after speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

“I’m really happy, especially with the people that I’m surrounded with, the manager, the directors, the board,” he said.

“They are a group of amazing people and I’m really happy.

“If I say this now there’s probably going to be a massive headline tomorrow — ‘you never know what the future brings’ — but again, I’m happy.”

Haaland said he was concentrating on upcoming matches rather than thinking about a contract as City attempt to repeat their trophy treble.

“My focus mainly now is on the pitch,” he said. “There’s a lot of games.

“Two days ago it was a Manchester derby and now it’s Champions League and next Sunday it’s Liverpool so I think I should focus on that and not anything else at the moment.”

Lionel Messi won the Ballon d’Or for the eighth time in his career at a star-studded ceremony in Paris on Monday. Messi, 36, succeeds Karim Benzema as winner of the prize, awarded for his performances last season, when he inspired Argentina to glory at the World Cup. It was his displays in Qatar, when Messi dragged his country to a victory that crowned his remarkable career, that allowed Messi to see off stiff competition from Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland in particular. Haaland came second in the final voting, with Mbappe third and Kevin De Bruyne in fourth place.

Former Barcelona superstar Messi scored seven times at the World Cup and was named the tournament’s best player after Argentina beat France on penalties in the final in Doha.

Yet Messi, who won his first Ballon d’Or in 2009, also had an underwhelming final season at Paris Saint-Germain, before leaving to play for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.

His old PSG teammate Mbappe made his case with his remarkable performances at the World Cup, which he finished as the top scorer on eight goals after netting a hat-trick in the final for France.

Norway striker Haaland scored an incredible 52 goals in 53 games for Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s side won the treble of English Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

He and De Bruyne were among members of that City team who were nominated.

Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland are among the leading contenders to win this year’s men’s Ballon d’Or, while Spain World Cup star Aitana Bonmati leads the nominees announced on Wednesday for the women’s prize. Messi, who recently left Paris Saint-Germain for Inter Miami, is in with a chance of succeeding Karim Benzema and winning the Ballon d’Or for the eighth time in his remarkable career after leading Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar last year.

Haaland may be his main rival for the prize after scoring 52 goals in 53 games to help Manchester City win the treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup last season.

The Norway striker last week won the UEFA player of the year award for last season.

PSG’s Kylian Mbappe and Haaland’s City teammate Kevin De Bruyne also feature among the 30 nominees for the prize, the winner of which will be announced at a ceremony in Paris on October 30.

Benzema, who ended a 14-year spell at Real Madrid in June when he moved to Saudi club Al-Ittihad, is also nominated.

Bonmati, winner of the UEFA women’s player award, appears the favourite to claim the Ballon d’Or after being the outstanding player as Spain lifted the World Cup in Sydney last month.

She also starred as Barcelona won the Champions League and will hope to succeed her club and international colleague Alexia Putellas, winner in the last two years.

Putellas is not nominated this time having hardly played for Barcelona last season after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate knee ligament in July 2022 which kept her out for nine months.

Bonmati is one of four members of Spain’s World Cup-winning team nominated, along with Olga Carmona, Salma Paralluelo and Alba Redondo.

Their compatriots Patricia Guijarro and Mapi Leon are also named.

Both of Barcelona, they did not go to the World Cup after being among a group of 15 players who said last year they no longer wanted to play for Spain in a protest against the Spanish federation and coach Jorge Vilda.

Others included in the 30 nominees are Chelsea and Australia striker Sam Kerr and England goalkeeper Mary Earps.

Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick as Manchester City maintained their perfect Premier League start with a 5-1 thrashing of Fulham on Saturday, as Son Heung-min also netted three times in Tottenham’s 5-2 victory at Burnley. But Chelsea’s huge investment in the transfer market is still to reap reward as the Blues lost 1-0 at home to Nottingham Forest. In keeping with the early weeks of the season, City were good enough for the three points without ever hitting top gear. “Every year is like this at this club. We start a bit late and a bit sloppy because we play right until the last game (of the season) because we are the best club,” said Haaland. “We will only get better and better from here.”

The English champions were without manager Pep Guardiola as he recovers from back surgery in his native Catalonia.

The home side had not had a shot on target until Julian Alvarez turned home Haaland’s cross to open the scoring on 31 minutes.

Fulham, who were missing influential midfielder Joao Palhinha after his deadline day move to Bayern Munich collapsed on Friday, responded immediately when Tim Ream tapped in from a corner.

City needed a set-piece of their own to restore the lead in controversial circumstances.

Nathan Ake’s header was allowed to stand despite Manuel Akanji, who was in an offside position, jumping over the ball.

Haaland exploded after the break. He became the fastest player to reach 40 Premier League goals, in just 39 appearances, with a cool finish from Phil Foden‘s through ball.

The Norwegian then put his missed penalty at Sheffield United last weekend behind him to slot home from the spot.

He made it six goals in five games this season by completing his hat-trick in stoppage time.

Spurs sit two points behind City after their sparkling start under Ange Postecoglou continued.

Burnley took the lead after just four minutes at Turf Moor through Lyle Foster.

Son, who was moved into a more central role by Postecoglou in place of Richarlison, soon proved his manager had pulled off another masterstroke.

The Tottenham captain’s deft chip levelled before a thunderous strike from Cristian Romero put the visitors in front in first-half stoppage time.

James Maddison‘s curling finish from the edge of the box made it 3-1 before Son took centre stage to score twice in three minutes and complete his hat-trick.

“I’m the captain, but I have great players around me,” said Son, who was handed the armband when Harry Kane departed for Bayern Munich.

“My job is really easy and I try to be an example, try to smile and try to take responsibility on and off the pitch.”

Chelsea’s spending on deadline day took their total splashed on new players in just over a year under a consortium fronted by Todd Boehly to more than £1 billion ($1.3 billion).

Moises Caicedo‘s move from Brighton, that could rise to £115 million, broke the British transfer record last month.

But the Ecuador international was at fault for the only goal at Stamford Bridge to leave Mauricio Pochettino’s men embarrassed.

Anthony Elanga slotted home three minutes into the second-half after Caicedo gave the ball away inside his own half.

New signing Cole Palmer was thrown on to try and turn the game around, but Chelsea’s lack of a natural goalscorer, despite their huge outlay, was again exposed.

Pochettino has won just one of his first four games in charge to leave Chelsea already eight points adrift of City.

Bournemouth were denied their first win under Andoni Iraola as Bryan Mbuemo snatched a 2-2 draw for Brentford.

Sheffield United and Everton both secured their first point of the season after a pulsating 2-2 draw in the lunchtime kick-off.

Manchester City extended their perfect start to the Premier League season as Rodri sealed a dramatic 2-1 win against Sheffield United after Erling Haaland scored once and missed a penalty for the champions on Sunday. Haaland drove a first half spot-kick against the post before his header put City in front after the break at Bramall Lane. City were in danger of squandering the points when Jayden Bogle equalised against the run of play with just five minutes left. But Rodri saved City with a blistering strike three minutes later as Pep Guardiola’s side moved to the top of the table after a third successive victory. City’s latest success was achieved without Guardiola, who was watching on television while he recuperates after back surgery in Barcelona.

The City boss was in constant contact with his assistant Juanma Lillo, who took the reins at Bramall Lane and will also be in charge for the champions’ clash with Fulham on Saturday.

Guardiola’s rehabilitation will have been aided by the knowledge that City can thrive in his absence.

Although he achieved it from afar, it was a landmark victory for Guardiola, who now has 200 league wins with City in just 269 games, beating the previous Premier League record of 326 matches to reach that milestone set by Jose Mourinho in 2020.

For the first time since 2016, City have opened a season with three consecutive league wins in an ominous statement to their title rivals that last season’s treble triumph has not sated their appetite for success.

City should have gone ahead in the 36th minute when Julian Alvarez‘s cross was blocked by John Egan’s out-stretched arm.

But Haaland hammered his penalty against the post. The Norwegian stood with a look of disbelief etched on his face as the ball rebounded to safety.

It was Haaland’s first penalty miss in the Premier League after scoring his previous seven.

When Haaland steered another good chance wide from Kyle Walker‘s cross, it looked like a day to forget for the striker.

Haaland was denied again from Mateo Kovacic‘s pass, his close-range chip clawed away by Wes Foderingham.

But Haaland finally rewarded City’s territorial dominance in the 63rd minute, rising above Jack Robinson at the far post to head his third goal this season from Jack Grealish‘s teasing cross.

City were cruising but Blades substitute Bogle snatched a shock equaliser in the 85th minute.

Playing against the club he supported as a boy, Walker was guilty of a needless backheel inside his own area, prolonging a United attack that climaxed with Bogle’s fierce shot deflecting in off Nathan Ake.

City responded superbly and regained the lead three minutes when Rodri lashed into the top corner from 12 yards after Walker redeemed himself by winning back possession outside the United area.

Aston Villa powered to a 3-1 win at Burnley as Matty Cash’s double extended a remarkable goal spree from Unai Emery’s side.

After losing 5-1 at Newcastle in their season opener, Villa had rebounded by routing Everton 4-0 and crushing Hibernian 5-0.

They made it 12 goals in three games.

Burnley have lost their first two games this term.

John McGinn’s eighth minute pass found Ollie Watkins and his cross was perfectly weighted for Cash to finish with aplomb from close-range.

Cash netted again in the 20th minute, smashing home after a swift exchange of passes with Moussa Diaby.

In the 47th minute, Burnley’s Lyle Foster fired home to become the first South African to score a Premier League goal since Steven Pienaar netted for Everton in 2013.

But Diaby ended Burnley’s uprising in the 61st minute with a clinical finish from Lucas Digne‘s cut back.

Later on Sunday, Newcastle and Liverpool meet at St James’ Park in an intriguing clash between two sides with title ambitions.
