172 candidates receive appointment letters at Visakhapatnam Rozgar Mela

As part of the nationwide employment generation drive launched by the Central government, the September 2026 tranche of the Rozgar Mela was held at the VPA Kalavani Auditorium in Visakhapatnam on Saturday (September 19, 2026).

According to a press release, the event was organised locally by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, Visakhapatnam Custom House, in coordination with other central departments including CGST, Railways, Department of Posts, Income Tax, HPCL, CISF, and major public sector banks.

Union Minister of Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu chaired the Visakhapatnam programme as the chief guest and formally handed over appointment letters to 172 candidates. These candidates secured Group-B and Group-C positions through recruitment bodies such as the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) and Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB) for placement within Andhra Pradesh.

The programme was attended by Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat, Chief Commissioner of Customs and CGST N. Sridhar, Income Tax Chief Commissioner Srinivas Danda, Visakhapatnam CGST and Customs Principal Commissioner K.V.V.G. Diwakar, and South Coast Railway Principal Chief Personnel Officer L.V.S. Satyanarayana Patrudu, alongside senior heads of departments from various central offices across the State.

North Carolina labour official backs federal rule to hike H-1B wages

The top labour official of North Carolina has supported a federal proposal to increase the minimum wages employers will have to offer to hire foreign workers under H-1B, H-1B1 and E-3 visa programmes.

North Carolina Labour Commissioner Luke Farley said American workers were being hurt by foreign visa programmes that depress wages.

“H-1B visas take jobs from American and North Carolina workers. Last week, I submitted official comments in support of a new rule proposed by the Trump Administration to make sure H-1B visa holders don’t undercut wages for American workers,” Mr. Farley said in a statement.

Economic Survey 2023-24: Only 51% graduates employable

According to the Economic Survey 2023-24, 65% of India’s fast-growing population is under the age of 35, and many lack the skills needed by a modern economy. It also stated that about 51.25% of the country’s youth is deemed employable, according to estimates. This is to say that about one in two graduates are not yet readily employable straight out of college. However, it must be noted that the percentage has improved from around 34% to 51.3% in the last decade.

The 2022-23 Annual Report of the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) notes, “as per National Single SignOn (NSSO), 2011-12 (68th round) report on Status of Education and Vocational Training in India, among persons of age 15-59 years, about 2.2% reported to have received formal vocational training and 8.6% reported to have received non-formal vocational training”.

The same report enumerates the challenges in the skilling and entrepreneurship landscape in the country, such as a low public perception on skilling; an alternative for those who have not completed their formal academic system, unmoderated skill development programmes of the Central Government, multiplicity in assessment and certification systems that cause confusion among the employers, understaffed or untrained faculty, mismatch between demand and supply, limited mobility between skill and higher education/vocational programmes.

Other challenges include a low coverage of apprenticeship programmes, insufficient skill curriculum, declining women labour force participation, pre-dominant non-farm, unorganised sector employment with low productivity but no premium for skilling, non-inclusion of entrepreneurship in formal education system, lack of mentorship and adequate access to finance for start-ups, inadequate motivation to innovation driven entrepreneurship and a lack of assured wage premium for skilled people.
