Delhi Capitals vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru, WPL 2025, Highlights: Smriti Mandhana smashed a blistering 47-ball 81 to power reigning champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a resounding eight-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League on Monday. RCB bowlers, led by Renuka Singh (3/23) and Georgia Wareham (3/25), produced a disciplined performance to bowl out Delhi for 141 in 19.3 overs. RCB’s opening duo of Smriti and Danni Wyatt-Hodge (42 from 33 balls; 7×4) made the target look effortless, forging a commanding 107-run partnership in just 55 balls before Richa Ghosh (11 not out from 5 balls) sealed the chase with a six in 16.2 overs. The Indian vice-captain Smriti smashed 10 fours and three sixes, dominating the bowlers with her signature sweeps, inside-out drives, and a towering pull over deep mid-wicket off Marizanne Kapp. (Scorecard)

Defending champions Royal Chellengers Bengaluru (RCB) will take on Gujarat Giants in the opening match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 in Vadodara on Friday. RCB, under the leadership for Smriti Mandhana, defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) in a thrilling final last year to win the franchise’s first ever trophy. As the team bids for a second straight title, Mandhana shared her views on RCB fans. She pointed out that RCB fans, as compared to other sides, criticise their team as much as they appreciate them.

“I think for us, we don’t think much about what’s happening around. It is really important to focus on playing good cricket as a team, that’s a culture we are trying to set as a team because the fanbase of RCB is such that appreciation and criticism will be a little more as compared to other teams. It is important for us to stick together as a group,” Mandhana said on the eve of RCB’s opening match.

“Who will not want people chanting RCB everywhere you travel, so that’s a big positive,” she added.

Ahead of the start of the season, Mandhana exuded confidence in the current roster despite the injury woes and their impact on the franchise.

“Definitely, I think injuries have had a big impact in the last one and a half, two months for us, post the auction. But yeah, I think injuries are something which is not in our hands, and luckily, we had a good auction. We have really good youngsters and people who performed really well in domestic circuits, and also, our overseas replacements are really quality players,” Mandhana said in the pre-match press conference.

“So, for sure, I mean, the quality of both the sophies is unmatched. But having said that, I think playing for the people who’ve been injured, I think that’s something which will be in our mind for sure,” he added.

Virat Kohli, former captain of RCB’s men’s team, extended heartfelt wishes to the franchise’s women’s side for the WPL 2025 season.

“I would like to wish the women’s team all the very best for the upcoming WPL season. It’s amazing what you did last year and I just hope that you continue to ride that momentum and take that confidence into this tournament as well. There’s no shortage of talent as we had seen last year as well. I’m sure that with the load off your back already of winning the title, you will go out there and express yourselves and enjoy the support you get from fans all over India. I wish you all the very best for the upcoming season,” Kohli said.

The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) is in full swing, and star Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry made the day of a young fan. Perry – who plays for Sydney Sixers – took time out of her WBBL schedule to bowl a couple of balls to a young fan who was wearing a shirt with her name and number on the back. The wholesome moment was witnessed by a number of people, many of whom were young children as well. Perry is one of the most popular female cricketers in the world.

First, Perry bowled a couple of under-arm balls to the young fan, who held the bat. Then she went on to give the fan a high-five, before taking the fan into her arms.

Perry, 34, is regarded as one of the premier all-rounders in women’s cricket. Representing Australia, she has won two ODI World Cup titles and six T20 World Cup titles.

She also turns out for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) women’s team in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), and helped the franchise to its first-ever league title across men’s and women’s cricket in 2024. She was retained by the franchise ahead of WPL 2025.

Perry is currently the top run-scorer of WBBL 2024, having slammed 315 runs in six games at a strike-rate of more than 150. She has hit three fifties in the process. However, despite Perry’s heroics, the Sydney Sixers sit at fifth place in the league table, just outside the top four who qualify for the playoffs.

Not only is Perry one of Australia’s greatest women’s cricketers – boasting an average of 50 in WODIs – she is also a multi-talented sportsperson. Perry also has a football career to boast about, having represented Australia in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where she even scored her nation’s only goal in the quarter-final.

Australia will start as overwhelming favourites in their quest for an unprecedented eighth final appearance when they take on South Africa in the semi-final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Dubai on Thursday. Australia have now made it to the semi-finals of the global T20 tournament in all its nine editions held so far since 2009 in England. The six-time champions take on the Proteas women in a last-four clash in what seems to be a repeat of the summit showdown during the 2023 edition in South Africa, which the Southern Stars won by 19 runs.

Going by pure statistic, South Africa are no match for Australia who have won nine out of the 10 WT20I games, with the former’s only win coming in January this year.

The head-to-head record at Women’s T20 World Cup is even more intimidating as Australia have won all the seven encounters. The best part about the current Australian team is the core which has remained intact for years now with only Meg Lanning retiring from international cricket.

All the 10 others, who played in the 2023 final are here with the likes of Alyssa Healy, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Ashleigh Gardner being the pillars of the team.

On a slow Dubai track, the depth in batting has been Australia’s biggest strength, with Phoebe Litchfield and Annabel Sutherland capable of muscling the balls to the fence. For South Africa, one of their biggest assets has been slow left-arm orthodox Nonkululeko Mlaba, who has so far taken 10 wickets in four group league games.

Skipper Laura Wolvaardt, her opening partner Taznim Brits and the seasoned Marizanne Kapp are all match-winners in their own rights but they have always come up short against Healy and company.

Hopefully, the Proteas women would be eighth time lucky against familiar foes in their bid to win the maiden global T20 trophy.

Australia women’s cricket star Ellyse Perry suffered one of the most strange dismissals in cricket on Sunday. The 33-year-old was run out while playing a T20I match for Australia women against New Zealand women. However, the manner in which she was dismissed can rank it amongst the most bizarre dismissals ever seen in cricket. The all-rounder first survived an LBW appeal from the bowler, but seemed to lose focus as she was run out by New Zealand wicket-keeper Izzy Grace.

Watch: Ellyse Perry suffers bizarre run out

Batting well set on 34, Perry could not time a delivery by New Zealand spinner Amelia Kerr, but attempted to take a single despite not knowing where the ball had landed. An LBW appeal by Izzy Grace seemed to make Perry lose focus, as she did not realise that the ball had landed right in front of the wicketkeeper. Grace was quick to react and dislodge the bails, as Perry failed to realise and return to her crease on time.

After Perry’s dismissal, Australia suffered a mini-collapse. From 91/3 in 11.5 overs, Australia only managed a total of 142 in 20 overs. It proved to be more than enough in the end, as New Zealand could not chase the total down. They managed just 113, handing Australia a 29-run win. Surprisingly, Perry did not bowl.

The win for Australia gave them an unassailable 2-0 series lead over New Zealand in the three-match series. The series is the last bilateral series before the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, and therefore serves as preparation for the big event.

Australia women boast a phenomenal record in the shortest format of the game. They have six of the eight Women’s T20 World Cup tournaments held till date, including the previous three in a row. India have finished runners-up once, and will be hoping to go one better this time.

With Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ruling out India hosting the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as a potential host for the tournament. At the same time, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has asked for more time to save the tournament from being moved out of the country. In May this year, the ICC had unveiled the schedule of Women’s T20 World Cup to be hosted by Bangladesh from October 3-20, with warm-up matches scheduled to begin from September 27.

According to a report in Cricbuzz, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is believed to be looking at Dubai and Abu Dhabi as the options for hosting the tournament, though the BCB has sought more time. It added the ICC is expected to make a decision likely on August 20, when an online meeting of the directors is scheduled, though the agenda is different.

“A BCB official said on Thursday that it has requested the ICC for five more days before making a call. If the ICC grants the extra time, then it would have to decide on August 20, the day of the board meeting. It is understood that the ICC was originally expected to take the call on the Women’s World Cup by August 15,” said the report.

With Shah’s statement ruling out India as an alternative venue, the report also said BCB requesting for extra time is because they are confident of coming up with a plan that will meet the ICC’s requirements to host the tournament.

“The ICC is seeking a host country with a time zone similar to that of Bangladesh and clear weather conditions, and UAE fits that criteria well. Besides, the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) boasts world-class infrastructure.

“And more importantly, the ECB is believed to be keen on hosting the event. It is understood that Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka are also interested. With just about 50 days remaining for the start of the tournament, time is running out,” added the report.

The report further said the agenda for the August 20 meeting by the ICC is believed to be finalizing the terms of reference for an inquiry into the delivery of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup co-hosted by the USA and West Indies, from June 1-29.

At the ICC Annual Conference in Colombo last month, cricket’s global governing body formed a panel comprising three directors – Roger Twose, Lawson Naidoo, and Imran Khwaja – to report on this matter. “The meeting has been mainly called to address this issue but a decision on the Women’s World Cup cannot be ruled out,” concluded the report.

In-form Delhi Capitals, led by the inspirational Meg Lanning, would hope to be second time lucky and lift their maiden Women’s Premier League title when they take on a plucky Royal Challengers Bangalore in the summit clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday. After missing out on the title in WPL’s inaugural edition last year, losing by seven wickets to Mumbai Indians in the final, DC looked a rejuvenated side this year. DC have been in superb form this year, topping the five-team league standings with 12 points from eight matches.

Lanning has led DC from the front, scoring 308 runs from eight innings, while South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp and Australian left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen are the highest wicket-takers for the side with 11 scalps each.

DC’s only two defeats this season came against Mumbai Indians amd UP Warriorz. Leaving aside those two matches, they have enjoyed a near-perfect campaign.

Going into the final, they will definitely start as favourites, having never lost to RCB in four meetings.

But having said that, past results will hardly have any significance in the final. It will be a new day and the the side which can withstand pressure and expectations will lift the title.

DC will expect the explosive Shafali Verma to provide them with a quick start alongside Lanning.

Jemimah Rodrigues has been in fine nick in the middle, but Lanning would expect more contributions from the likes of all-rounders Alice Capsey and Kapp.

On the bowling front, Jonassen has been the star performer but the likes of Kapp and Shikha Pandey too have contributed.

Left-arm spinner Radha Yadav has also been effective with 10 wickets and the home team will definitely depend a lot on its spinners in a relatively slow Kotla pitch.

RCB, on the other hand, finished third in the league phase after an inconsistent run that yielded eight points from as many games but they clicked when it mattered, knocking out defending champions MI by five runs in the eliminator here on Friday.

All-rounder Ellyse Perry will be key to RCB’s success on Sunday as besides being the highest run-getter with 312 runs, the Australian has been impressive with the ball, scalping seven wickets.

If not for Perry’s all-round show against MI on Friday, the result could have been different. She first played a vital 50-ball 66-run knock and then returned with figures of 1/29 to play a key role in RCB’s journey to the final.

But Perry would look for more support from the likes of skipper Smriti Mandhana, Sophie Devine, Richa Ghosh and Sophie Molineux with the bat.

However if RCB were to stop DC, they would need efforts from their bowlers, especially the likes of Renuka Singh, Shreyanka Patil, Georgia Wareham etc.

All in all it promises to be a cracker of a contest with the balance slightly tilted towards hosts DC.

Teams (from): Delhi Capitals: Taniya Bhatia (wk), Laura Harris, Meg Lanning (c), Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, Alice Capsey, Marizanne Kapp, Shikha Pandey, Annabel Sutherland, Jess Jonassen, Minnu Mani, Poonam Yadav, Arundhati Reddy, Titas Sadhu, Radha Yadav, Ashwani Kumari, Aparna Mondal, V Sneha Deepthi.

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Richa Ghosh (wk), Disha Kasat, Smriti Mandhana (c), Sabbhineni Meghana, Indrani Roy, Satheesh Shubha, Heather Knight, Simran Bahadur, Nadine de Klerk, Sophie Devine, Shreyanka Patil, Ellyse Perry, Asha Sobhana, Ekta Bisht, Kate Cross, Sophie Molineux, Shradda Pokharkar, Renuka Singh, Georgia Wareham.

Ellyse Perry, star Australian cricket team cricketer, has been in great form in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024. She has been crucial in Royal Challengers Bangalore reaching the final of the WPL. Ellyse Perry took 6/15 and scored 40* as RCB beat Mumbai Indians to reach the play-offs. Against the same opponents in the Eliminator, Perry took 1/29 and scored 66 to help his team win by five runs to set up a final clash with Delhi Capitals.

After her exploits, an old video of her from 2020 has been re-shared by several social media users.

Murali Vijay, in an interview was asked, if after the lockdown there were two people he would want to go on dinner with would it be? He said Shikhar Dhawan, one of his teammates, and you. What would you respond to that?” the anchor asked Ellyse Perry in the video.

“I hope he is paying if that’s the case. That’s very kind of him. I am very flattered,” said Ellyse Perry on hearing the statement.

Talking about the Eliminator,  Young off-spinner Shreyanka Patil and uncapped veteran leg-spinner Asha Sobhana showed nerves of steel to take Royal Challengers Bangalore into WPL final with a five-run victory over defending champions Mumbai Indians in the ‘Eliminator’ on Friday.

Chasing an easy target of 136 and needing 20 off last three overs, MI’s innings ended at 130 for 6.

RCB, who entered their maiden final in the second edition, will meet last year’s runner-up Delhi Capitals in the summit clash on Sunday.

It was 21-year-old Shreyanka (2/16 in 4 overs), whose vital 18th over raised visions of victory as she removed the MI skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (33).

RCB keeper Richa Ghosh paid the price for her slow movements failing to stump Harmanpreet off Shreyanka but the young off-spinner didn’t lose heart as she flighted the ball once more and the Indian skipper was caught at long-on fence.

At a time when spinners are afraid of giving the ball air even in ODIs, Shreyanka’s approach was a welcome departure and it did pay dividends.

Needing 16 off 12 balls, the experienced Aussie Sophie Molineux (1/16 in 4 overs) bowled a brilliant penultimate over in which she gave only four runs keeping 12 runs off final over for leg-spinner Sobhana to defend.

The 32-year-old spinner, who hasn’t played for India, gave away only six runs as RCB team’s joy knew no bounds with Indian vice-captain Mandhana outwitting her national team boss Harmanpreet tactically in the death overs.

Shreyanka also showed courage in Powerplay as she challenged the seasoned Hayley Matthews (15 off 14 balls) to clear the longest boundary towards deep mid-wicket fence only to be caught a feet inside the ropes.

Yastika Bhatia (19 off 27 balls) didn’t really get going and Perry, who is having a dream run, bowled an angular delivery which the batter played all over to be clean bowled.

Nat Sciver-Brunt looked in good touch with four boundaries, two of which came back-to-back off leg-spinner Georgia Wareham‘s delivery before she delivered a flipper and rushed the batter, who was bowled through the gate.

Skipper Harmanpreet used the sweep shot well, dispatching Sobhana for consecutive boundaries.

Earlier, Ellyse Perry stood tall amid ruins with yet another elegant knock but Royal Challengers Bangalore could only manage a below-par 135 for 6 which proved to be enough in the end.

Perry’s 66 off 50 balls was the cornerstone of RCB’s total after their top-order was blown away by a disciplined MI attack, reducing them to 24 for 3 inside the four overs of Powerplay.
