In-form Delhi Capitals, led by the inspirational Meg Lanning, would hope to be second time lucky and lift their maiden Women’s Premier League title when they take on a plucky Royal Challengers Bangalore in the summit clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday. After missing out on the title in WPL’s inaugural edition last year, losing by seven wickets to Mumbai Indians in the final, DC looked a rejuvenated side this year. DC have been in superb form this year, topping the five-team league standings with 12 points from eight matches.

Lanning has led DC from the front, scoring 308 runs from eight innings, while South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp and Australian left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen are the highest wicket-takers for the side with 11 scalps each.

DC’s only two defeats this season came against Mumbai Indians amd UP Warriorz. Leaving aside those two matches, they have enjoyed a near-perfect campaign.

Going into the final, they will definitely start as favourites, having never lost to RCB in four meetings.

But having said that, past results will hardly have any significance in the final. It will be a new day and the the side which can withstand pressure and expectations will lift the title.

DC will expect the explosive Shafali Verma to provide them with a quick start alongside Lanning.

Jemimah Rodrigues has been in fine nick in the middle, but Lanning would expect more contributions from the likes of all-rounders Alice Capsey and Kapp.

On the bowling front, Jonassen has been the star performer but the likes of Kapp and Shikha Pandey too have contributed.

Left-arm spinner Radha Yadav has also been effective with 10 wickets and the home team will definitely depend a lot on its spinners in a relatively slow Kotla pitch.

RCB, on the other hand, finished third in the league phase after an inconsistent run that yielded eight points from as many games but they clicked when it mattered, knocking out defending champions MI by five runs in the eliminator here on Friday.

All-rounder Ellyse Perry will be key to RCB’s success on Sunday as besides being the highest run-getter with 312 runs, the Australian has been impressive with the ball, scalping seven wickets.

If not for Perry’s all-round show against MI on Friday, the result could have been different. She first played a vital 50-ball 66-run knock and then returned with figures of 1/29 to play a key role in RCB’s journey to the final.

But Perry would look for more support from the likes of skipper Smriti Mandhana, Sophie Devine, Richa Ghosh and Sophie Molineux with the bat.

However if RCB were to stop DC, they would need efforts from their bowlers, especially the likes of Renuka Singh, Shreyanka Patil, Georgia Wareham etc.

All in all it promises to be a cracker of a contest with the balance slightly tilted towards hosts DC.

Teams (from): Delhi Capitals: Taniya Bhatia (wk), Laura Harris, Meg Lanning (c), Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, Alice Capsey, Marizanne Kapp, Shikha Pandey, Annabel Sutherland, Jess Jonassen, Minnu Mani, Poonam Yadav, Arundhati Reddy, Titas Sadhu, Radha Yadav, Ashwani Kumari, Aparna Mondal, V Sneha Deepthi.

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Richa Ghosh (wk), Disha Kasat, Smriti Mandhana (c), Sabbhineni Meghana, Indrani Roy, Satheesh Shubha, Heather Knight, Simran Bahadur, Nadine de Klerk, Sophie Devine, Shreyanka Patil, Ellyse Perry, Asha Sobhana, Ekta Bisht, Kate Cross, Sophie Molineux, Shradda Pokharkar, Renuka Singh, Georgia Wareham.

Ellyse Perry, star Australian cricket team cricketer, has been in great form in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024. She has been crucial in Royal Challengers Bangalore reaching the final of the WPL. Ellyse Perry took 6/15 and scored 40* as RCB beat Mumbai Indians to reach the play-offs. Against the same opponents in the Eliminator, Perry took 1/29 and scored 66 to help his team win by five runs to set up a final clash with Delhi Capitals.

After her exploits, an old video of her from 2020 has been re-shared by several social media users.

Murali Vijay, in an interview was asked, if after the lockdown there were two people he would want to go on dinner with would it be? He said Shikhar Dhawan, one of his teammates, and you. What would you respond to that?” the anchor asked Ellyse Perry in the video.

“I hope he is paying if that’s the case. That’s very kind of him. I am very flattered,” said Ellyse Perry on hearing the statement.

Talking about the Eliminator,  Young off-spinner Shreyanka Patil and uncapped veteran leg-spinner Asha Sobhana showed nerves of steel to take Royal Challengers Bangalore into WPL final with a five-run victory over defending champions Mumbai Indians in the ‘Eliminator’ on Friday.

Chasing an easy target of 136 and needing 20 off last three overs, MI’s innings ended at 130 for 6.

RCB, who entered their maiden final in the second edition, will meet last year’s runner-up Delhi Capitals in the summit clash on Sunday.

It was 21-year-old Shreyanka (2/16 in 4 overs), whose vital 18th over raised visions of victory as she removed the MI skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (33).

RCB keeper Richa Ghosh paid the price for her slow movements failing to stump Harmanpreet off Shreyanka but the young off-spinner didn’t lose heart as she flighted the ball once more and the Indian skipper was caught at long-on fence.

At a time when spinners are afraid of giving the ball air even in ODIs, Shreyanka’s approach was a welcome departure and it did pay dividends.

Needing 16 off 12 balls, the experienced Aussie Sophie Molineux (1/16 in 4 overs) bowled a brilliant penultimate over in which she gave only four runs keeping 12 runs off final over for leg-spinner Sobhana to defend.

The 32-year-old spinner, who hasn’t played for India, gave away only six runs as RCB team’s joy knew no bounds with Indian vice-captain Mandhana outwitting her national team boss Harmanpreet tactically in the death overs.

Shreyanka also showed courage in Powerplay as she challenged the seasoned Hayley Matthews (15 off 14 balls) to clear the longest boundary towards deep mid-wicket fence only to be caught a feet inside the ropes.

Yastika Bhatia (19 off 27 balls) didn’t really get going and Perry, who is having a dream run, bowled an angular delivery which the batter played all over to be clean bowled.

Nat Sciver-Brunt looked in good touch with four boundaries, two of which came back-to-back off leg-spinner Georgia Wareham‘s delivery before she delivered a flipper and rushed the batter, who was bowled through the gate.

Skipper Harmanpreet used the sweep shot well, dispatching Sobhana for consecutive boundaries.

Earlier, Ellyse Perry stood tall amid ruins with yet another elegant knock but Royal Challengers Bangalore could only manage a below-par 135 for 6 which proved to be enough in the end.

Perry’s 66 off 50 balls was the cornerstone of RCB’s total after their top-order was blown away by a disciplined MI attack, reducing them to 24 for 3 inside the four overs of Powerplay.

Perry’s 66 off 50 balls was the cornerstone of RCB’s total after their top-order was blown away by a disciplined MI attack, reducing them to 24 for 3 inside the four overs of Powerplay.

Hayley Matthews (2/18 in 4 overs) bowled a flighted off-break that breached veteran Sophie Devine’s defence to draw the first blood.

Skipper Smriti Mandhana (10) was holed out in the deep cover region off a Nat Sciver-Brunt delivery that stopped a bit on the southpaw and Disha Kasat (0), who simply failed to get going, was caught by Pooja Vastrakar inside the 30 yard circle off left-arm spinner Saika Ishaque (2/18 in 4 overs).

Richa Ghosh hit a six but it wasn’t her day as Matthews slightly altered the length and the keeper-batter mistimed after failing to reach to the pitch of the delivery.

Perry was, however, at her stylish best with some crisp boundaries and a straight six off Saika but the best shot was the late cut bisecting the point and short third-man off Shabnim Ismail’s delivery.

Perry never had anyone supporting her for a lengthy period and wickets falling at regular interval did also made her judicious in shot selection.

Towards the end, Georgia Wareham (18 not out off 10 balls) used the long handle to good effect and hit a last ball six off Saika to take the team past 130-run mark.

Saika paid the price for Sajeevan Sajana’s poor effort in the deep as she dropped a sitter offered by Wareham. The poor fielding standard of WPL continues to be a problem.

Ellyse Perry came up with an allround show as she snapped a record six-wicket haul and then smashed an unbeaten 40 to set up Royal Challengers Bangalore’s dominating seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians and seal their play-off berth in the Women’s Premier League on Tuesday. The star Australian allrounder, who had gone wicketless so far in the tournament, had a night to remember as she registered the best-ever bowling figures in the history of Women’s Premier League, snapping six for 15 runs as RCB dismissed MI for 113, their second lowest score in WPL, after opting to bowl first.

Chasing 114 to win, RCB were 39 for 3 in the seventh over. It could have been worse had Nat Sciver-Brunt held on to two catches off Shabnim Ismail.

However, the 33-year-old Perry slammed a 38-ball 40, sharing an unbroken 76-run stand with Richa Ghosh (36 off 28) to take RCB across the finish line in 15 overs.

With the win, RCB finished their league engagements at third position with eight points, while MI (10) stayed at the second spot behind Delhi Capitals (10) in the table.

Needing a win to seal their top-three position, Perry got the ball to nip back from the crease consistently to clean up four batters and trap two in front of the wicket to drain the life out of defending champions, leaving them tottering at 82 for 7 in 13 overs.

Sent in to bat, Hayley Matthews (26) and Sajeevan Sajana (30), who was promoted up the order, provided a blistering start to MI, adding 43 off 35 balls.

Matthew was the aggressor at the start, using her slog shots to blast two fours and two sixes. While Renuka Singh was on the line for Matthews in the third over, Sajana picked Sophie Molineux in the fifth over for special treatment.

However, Sophie Devine ended the powerplay dismissing Matthews, who holed out to Perry as MI were 43 for one in six overs.

Sajana then took over the reins and smashed Devine for a four and a six before Perry brought RCB back into the game.

Perry bowled outside off length deliveries and both Sajana and Harmanpreet Kaur fell for the trap as the ball rattled their stumps to leave MI at 65 for 3 in 9 overs.

Sajana hit five boundaries and a six in her 21-ball knock.

Perry continued to wreak havoc with the ball as she returned to trap Amelia Kerr (2) in front before cleaning up Amanjot Kaur (4) in the 11th over.

Completing her bowling quota of four overs on the trot, the Australian then flattened the off stumps of Pooja Vastrakar (6) first and then deceived Nat Sciver-Brunt (10) with another inward seam delivery in her final over to grab a record six-wicket haul.

It was a sensational show from Perry, who took the six wickets off her last 15 balls. Asha Sobhana (1/12), Molineux (1/26) and Shreyanka Patil (1/3) were also among the wickets.

Priyanka Bala, who replaced Yastika Bhatia in the XI, tried her bit smashing two sixes in her 18-ball 19 before MI folded up for a small total in 19 overs. It was only the second time that MI have been bowled out in WPL.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore Women suffered defeat in a last-ball thriller at the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024. The defeat left the entire team shell-shocked after suffering a 1-run defeat at the hands of the Delhi Capitals women. It was Richa Ghosh who almost took RCB women home with her smashing knock of 29-ball 51. But her run-out ended up being the decisive point in the game. After the game, RCB stars like Smriti Mandhana, and Ellyse Perry were understandably heartbroken as their title hopes ended prematurely.

While Smriti struggled to hold back her tears, Ellyse was all emotional as she realised RCB women were all but out of playoff contention.

While chasing 182 run target, RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana (5 runs from 7 balls) and Aussie batter Sophie Molineux (33 runs from 30 balls) came to the crease, however, they failed to give the Bengaluru-based franchise a good start in the game as Mandhana departed for just five runs. RCB was 9/1 in 1.3 overs.

But Ellyse Perry (49 runs from 32 balls) took things in control with her blitz knock but it was enough to take RCB to a better position. Perry smashed 7 fours and 1 six during her time on the crease. She partnered with Sophie, taking RCB to 89 in 11 overs before she was dismissed via a run out. Sophie was also dismissed by Arundhati Reddy, reducing RCB to 93/3 in 11.5 overs.

After Perry’s dismissal, Richa started smashing and claimed her half-century in just 29 balls. The Indian wicketkeeper batter smashed 4 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 175.86. She partnered with Sophie Devine (26 in 16 balls, with a four and two sixes) and Georgia Wareham (12 in six balls) taking RCB near an incredible win. When Sophie and Georgia were dismissed, RCB was 165/5 in 19 overs, left with 17 to make in final over.

Richa gave RCB a chance to stay afloat with two sixes. But needing two runs on final ball, she was run out and RCB missed out by a run.

The M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru was witness to some terrific hitting from Royal Challengers Bangalore batters in a Women’s Premier League match against UP Warriorz on Monday. Engaging fifties by skipper Smriti Mandhana and star all-rounder Elysse Perry took Royal Challengers Bangalore to a formidable 198 for three in 20 overs. Looking to get out of a two-match losing streak, RCB promoted S Meghana into the opening slot in place of Sophie Devine and the move paid off.

Meghana and Mandhana (80, 50b, 10×4, 3×6) added 51 runs in 5.3 overs to give the Royal Challengers a strong platform and the hosts ended the Power Play at 57 for 1, their best in WPL 2.

Mandhana in the company of Perry (58, 37b, 4×4, 4×6) added 95 runs off just 64 balls for the second wicket to optimise that start as the UP bowlers wilted under constant heat.

The left-hander’s timing was stunning as she played shots all around the park and treated spinners with disdain. It will give her a lot of confidence as she often tends to get stuck against the tweakers.

Mandhana, who was dropped on 28, was particularly severe on off-spinner Chamari Athapathuthu and left-arm pacer Anjali Sarvani, who she carted for a slew of fours and sixes.

But slog-sweep of off-spinner Deepti Sharma ended in the hands of Poonam Khemnar at deep mid-wicket to silence the roaring RCB fans.

However, Perry, who smashed left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad for two successive sixes, and Richa Ghosh added 42 runs off 18 balls for the third wicket as RCB motored on to a strong total. One of her sixes even went on to break the display car’s window.

The Warriorz’s chase did not have much to write home about except a fifty (55, 38b, 7×4, 3×6) by captain Alyssa Healy as it ended at 175/8.

Vrinda ruled out

Warriorz’s Vrinda Dinesh is ruled out of the remainder of the WPL after suffering a shoulder injury during the match against Mumbai Indians here on February 28.

The UP side has signed wicket-keeper batter Uma Chetry as a replacement at her base price of Rs 10 lakhs.

Uma recently played for India A against England A and was also a part of the India A Emerging squad that won the ACC Emerging Women’s Asia Cup 2023.

RCB also made a change to the side, benching injured Shreyanka Patil for veteran Ekta Bisht.
