New Delhi:

Residents of Delhi-NCR felt a strong earthquake this morning. According to the National Center for Seismology, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck the national capital around 5:36 am.

In a post on X, the Delhi Police said, “We hope you all are safe, Delhi!” It also urged citizens to call on the emergency 112 helpline for emergencies.  Follow Delhi Earthquake Live Updates here

What To Do Before An Earthquake

One must always have a disaster emergency kit ready. Which includes:

  • Battery operated torch with extra batteries
  • Battery operated radio
  • First aid kit and manual
  • Emergency food (dry items) and water (packed and sealed)
  • Candles and matches in a waterproof container
  • Knife
  • Chlorine tablets or powdered water purifiers
  • Can opener.
  • Essential medicines
  • Cash and credit cards
  • Thick ropes and cords
  • Sturdy shoes

What To Do During An Earthquake

Stay as safe as possible during an earthquake. Be aware that some earthquakes are actually foreshocks and a larger earthquake might occur. Minimise your movements to a few steps that reach a nearby safe place and stay indoors until the shaking has stopped and you are sure exiting is safe.

If Indoors

Drop to the ground; take a cover by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and hold on until the shaking stops. If there is no table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.

Protect yourself by staying under the lintel of an inner door, in the corner of a room, under a table or even under a bed.

Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, (such as lighting fixtures or furniture).

Stay in bed if you are there when the earthquake strikes. Hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall. In that case, move to the nearest safe place.
Use a doorway for shelter only if it is in close proximity to you and if you know it is a strongly supported, load bearing doorway.

Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave.

Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on.

If Outdoors

Do not move from where you are. However, move away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and utility wires.

If you are in open space, stay there until the shaking stops. The greatest danger exists directly outside buildings; at exits; and alongside exterior walls. Most earthquake-related casualties result from collapsing walls, flying glass, and falling objects.

If In A Moving Vehicle

Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires.

Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake.

If Trapped Under Debris

Do not light a match.

Do not move about or kick up dust.

Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.

Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout only as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust.

Greece’s famed tourist island hotspot, Santorini, has witnessed a sudden increase in seismic activity, prompting the authorities to call for an urgent meeting. As per the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry, monitoring sensors had picked up “mild seismic-volcanic activity” in Santorini’s caldera, leading to speculation and concerns, especially given the island’s tourism-driven economy and the potential for geological upheaval.

The curved island in the Aegean Sea is located around a flooded volcanic caldera with monitoring stations detecting at least 39 quakes in a single day, mostly magnitude 3.5 or less, as per a report in Live Science.

The island is famous for its historical volcanic activity, particularly the massive Minoan eruption around 1600 BC which is regarded as one of the largest in human history. Between 2011 and 2012, Santorini experienced a similar seismic swarm linked to magma movement beneath the surface, but no eruption ensued.

The most recent eruption in Santorini’s history was recorded in 1950, suggesting that the island’s volcano remains active but not necessarily on the brink of an eruption.

‘No cause of concern’

Reflecting on the recent developments, Efthymios Lekkas, seismologist and head of the scientific monitoring committee for the Hellenic Volcanic Arc, stated on Greece’s ERT television that there was no immediate instance where the volcano may erupt.

“What we must realise is that the Santorini volcano produces very large explosions every 20,000 years. It’s been 3,000 years since the last explosion, so we have a very long time ahead of us before we face a big explosion,” said Mr Lekkas.

“The volcano is a living organism. We will not face a big explosion, but a mild procedure,” said Mr Lekkas adding that volcanic activity increases and decreases, and can cause small earthquakes. “

Despite no immediate danger, scientists continue to monitor the situation to understand if there’s any indication of magma movement or if it’s just part of the usual tectonic activity in the region.

Taipei, Taiwan:

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said, injuring 27 people and causing ceilings of homes to cave in according to local authorities.

An AFP journalist in the capital Taipei felt tremors for nearly a minute as the shallow quake struck shortly after midnight.

The epicenter was recorded 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) north of Yujing, a mango-growing district in southern Taiwan, the USGS said.

Video posted on Facebook and verified by AFP showed local fire authorities rescuing three people, including a child, who were trapped in a house that collapsed in nearby Nanxi district. The ceilings of several other houses in the district caved in.

Elsewhere, a person was injured by falling debris while two people were rescued from elevators, authorities said.

The health ministry said a total of 27 people were injured, while the Nanxi district fire brigade said “no major damage” had been reported.

Taiwanese chipmaking giant TSMC said it evacuated workers from some of its central and southern factories.

In Chiayi City, north of Yujing, CCTV showed shelves swaying and goods falling to the floor, in footage shared on Threads and verified by AFP.

Taiwan is frequently hit by earthquakes due to its location on the edges of two tectonic plates near the Pacific Ring of Fire, which USGS says is the most seismically active zone in the world.

The last major earthquake occurred in April 2024 when the island was hit by a deadly 7.4-magnitude tremor that officials said was the strongest in 25 years. At least 17 people were killed in that quake, which triggered landslides and severely damaged buildings around Hualien.

April’s earthquake was the most serious in Taiwan since it was struck by a 7.6-magnitude tremor in 1999. Some 2,400 people died in that quake, making it the deadliest natural disaster in the island’s history.

Since then, Taiwan has updated and enhanced its building code to incorporate quake-resistant construction methods, such as steel bars that allow a building to sway more easily when the ground moves.

Famous for its cutting-edge tech firms, Taiwan has built up an advanced early warning system that can alert the public to potentially serious ground shaking within seconds.

The system has been enhanced over the years to incorporate new tools such as smartphones and high-speed data connectivity, even in some of the most remote parts of the island.

What’s the claim?

Following a powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Tibet near the Nepal border on January 7, 2025, a video has gone viral on social media showing a road with large cracks running through it. Several users claimed the video depicts destruction caused by the recent earthquake in Nepal’s Lobuche. One such post on X garnered over 50,000 views and more than 160 reposts at the time of writing. Archived versions of similar posts are available here and here.

The video has also gained wide traction on Facebook, with similar claims suggesting it was captured in Nepal after the January 7 earthquake. Archived versions of such posts are accessible here, here, and here.

According to a report by The Washington Post, the earthquake near the China-Nepal border claimed at least 125 lives and injured 188 others. The quake struck Tingri County, located on the high Tibetan plateau near Nepal’s border.

However, the now-viral video is not related to this recent earthquake. It dates back to 2015, when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal near Kathmandu, causing nearly 6,000 deaths, injuring thousands, and resulting in massive infrastructural losses.

What we found

Logically Facts conducted a reverse image search and identified a similar video in an article published by The Guardian on April 25, 2015. The article detailed the catastrophic effects of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal in April 2015. It was among the most powerful earthquakes to hit the region in 80 years.

The viral video and footage from The Guardian share striking similarities. At the 0:27 timestamp of The Guardian’s video, individuals can be seen standing near a cracked road, matching the scene shown at the 0:25 mark of the viral clip.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The viral video also features a Telegraph logo, indicating its origin. A keyword search led to the same clip uploaded on YouTube by The Telegraph (archived here) on April 25, 2015. The video description reads, “Footage shows large cracks opening up in a Kathmandu road, caused by a powerful earthquake that left at least 1,130 dead, according to local police.”

Although the video depicts earthquake damage in Nepal, it is from 2015, not the recent event.

The verdict

A video of the aftermath of the 2015 earthquake in Nepal has been falsely linked to the recent earthquake at the Tibet-Nepal border recorded on January 7, 2025.

New Delhi:

An earthquake of magnitude 7.1 hit Tibet near the Nepalese border today, the tremors of which were felt in several parts of India, including Bihar, Assam and West Bengal.

Nepal is nestled in a geologically active region, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, forming the Himalayas and making earthquakes a frequent occurrence.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake was recorded at 6:35 am. NCS data reveals that two more earthquakes hit the region shortly after the first one.

The second earthquake of magnitude 4.7 was recorded at 7:02 am at a depth of 10 km and the third earthquake of magnitude 4.9 at 7:07 am at a depth of 30 km.

The tremors were particularly felt in Bihar where people were seen outside their houses and apartments. There have been no reports of any damage to property because of the earthquake.

Details to follow.

Sydney, Australia:

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake rattled buildings on Vanuatu’s main island early Sunday but did not appear to have caused major damage, just days after a massive, deadly quake on the Pacific archipelago.

The nation’s most populous island, Efate, is still reeling from the 7.3-magnitude quake on Tuesday, which killed 12 people as it toppled concrete buildings in the capital of Port Vila and set off landslides.

The latest quake Sunday occurred at a depth of 40 kilometres (25 miles) and was located some 30 kilometres west of the capital.

Unlike the earlier quake, no tsunami alerts were triggered when the temblor struck at 2:30 am (1530 GMT Saturday).

Port Vila businessman Michael Thompson told AFP the quake woke up his family.

“It gave a better bit of a shake and the windows rattled a little bit, it would have caused houses to rattle,” he said.

“But you know, no movement other than a few inches either way, really. Whereas the main quake, you would have had like a metre and a half movement of the property very, very rapidly and suddenly.

“I’d describe this one as one of the bigger aftershocks, and we’ve had a fair few of them now.”

Thompson said there was no sign of further damage in his immediate vicinity.

Mobile networks remained knocked out from earlier in the week, making outside contact with Vanuatu difficult.

In addition to disrupting communications, the first quake damaged water supplies and resulted in halted operations at the capital’s main shipping port.

The South Pacific nation declared a seven-day state of emergency and a night-time curfew following the first quake, and had only announced Saturday it would lift a suspension on commercial flights, in an effort to restart its vital tourism industry.

Rescuers Friday said they had expanded their search for trapped survivors to “numerous places of collapse” beyond the capital.

Still searching

Australia and New Zealand this week dispatched more than 100 personnel, along with rescue gear, dogs and aid supplies, to help hunt for trapped survivors and make emergency repairs.

There were “several major collapse sites where buildings are fully pancaked”, Australia’s rescue team leader Douglas May said in a video update on Friday.

“We’re now starting to spread out to see whether there’s further people trapped and further damage. And we’ve found numerous places of collapse east and west out of the city.”

More than 1,000 people were displaced as a result of the first quake — many now with other households or in evacuation centres, the latest UN report said, citing Vanuatu disaster management officials.

Thompson said power had been restored to his home on Saturday but said many others were still waiting.

“We’re hearing a lot of the  major businesses are still down, supermarkets are trying to open back up,” he said.

“So this is very different to what’s happened with disasters here in the past.

“Cyclones destroy everything outside, whereas earthquakes really destroy a lot of infrastructure inside the buildings.”

Vanuatu, an archipelago of some 320,000 inhabitants, sits in the Pacific’s quake-prone Ring of Fire.

Tourism accounts for about a third of the country’s economy, according to the Australia-Pacific Islands Business Council.
