At least 22 people killed after strong earthquake in central Philippines damages building. A strong offshore earthquake of magnitude 6.9 shook the central Philippines late on Tuesday (September 30, 2025), damaging stone and concrete buildings, injuring several people with falling debris and sending residents scrambling out of their homes, officials said.

The earthquake was centred about 17 kilometres, northeast of Bogo, a coastal city of about 90,000 people, where the intense shaking damaged concrete walls of houses and a fire station, knocked out power in the city and caused deep cracks on asphalt roads, firefighter Rey Cañete said.

“We were in our barracks to retire for the day when the ground started to shake and we rushed out but stumbled to the ground because of the intense shaking,” Cañete told The Associated Press by telephone, adding that he and three other firemen sustained cuts and bruises.

A concrete wall in their fire station collapsed, Cañete said. He and fellow firefighters provided first-aid to at least three residents, who were injured by falling debris and collapsed walls, including an elderly man with head injuries who they took to a nearby hospital, he said and added that more residents may have likely been injured due to the intense shaking.

Hundreds of terrified residents gathered in the darkness in a grassy field near the fire station and refused to return home hours after the earthquake struck in Bogo in Cebu province. Several business establishments visibly sustained damages and the asphalt and concrete roads where they passed had deep cracks, Cañete said, adding that an old Roman Catholic church in Daanbantayan town near Bogo was also damaged.

Cebu Gov. Pamela Baricuatro said an unspecified number of houses and a hospital were damaged in the hard-hit city of Bogo and elsewhere and that emergency medical teams were being deployed to treat residents who were pinned and injured. The extent of the damage and injuries would not be known until daytime, she said.

“We’re sending already a trauma team there, doctors and nurses are on the way,” Baricuatro told the DZMM radio network. ”We need medicine, food, medical teams.” The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issued a tsunami warning and advised people to stay away from the coastlines in Cebu and in the nearby provinces of Leyte and Biliran due to possible waves of up to 1 metre .

Teresito Bacolcol, director of the institute, told The AP that the tsunami warning was later lifted with no unusual waves being monitored.

Central Philippine provinces were still recovering from a storm that hit on Friday, leaving at least 27 people dead mostly due to drownings and falling trees, knocking out power in entire cities and towns and forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people.

The Philippines, one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries, is often hit by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of seismic faults around the ocean. The archipelago is also lashed by about 20 typhoons and storms each year.

New Delhi:

Strong tremors were felt in Delhi and its adjoining areas at 5:36 am today after a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck the national capital.

The National Centre for Seismology, the nodal agency of the Government of India for monitoring earthquake activity in the country, said in an update that tremors were felt across north India, with Delhi as the epicentre. The quake’s depth was just 5 km.

So far, there have been no reports of injuries or casualties.

“Everything Was Shaking”: Residents On Delhi Earthquake

A vendor at the New Delhi Railway Station said that “everything was shaking”.

“Customers started screaming,” he told the news agency ANI.

A passenger waiting for his train at the station said it felt like a train was “running here underground”.

A resident of Ghaziabad said the tremors were “so strong” and that he had “never felt like this before”.

“The entire building was shaking,” he said.

On January 23, strong tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck China’s Xinjiang at a depth of 80 kilometres.

Two weeks before that, mild tremors were last felt in Delhi and NCR on January 11 after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan.

Delhi is prone to earthquakes and is located in a high seismic zone (zone IV) of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) seismic zonation map.

A strong earthquake jolted Kathmandu early morning on Tuesday (January 7, 2025). The earthquake measuring 7.1 magnitude on Richter scale was recorded by the National Earthquake Measurement Centre at 6.50 a.m.

The epicentre of the earthquake was Dinggye, China, according to the centre.

The earthquake was felt in neighbouring Kavrepalanchwok and Dhading districts as well. People came out of their houses out of panic in Kathmandu.

However, there are no reports of any damage so far due to the earthquake.

Areas around Lobuche in Nepal in the high mountains near Mount Everest were also rattled by the tremors and a series of aftershocks.

“It shook quite strongly here, everyone is awake, but we don’t know about any damages yet,” said government official Jagat Prasad Bhusal in Nepal’s Namche region, which lies nearer to Everest.

Earthquake hits holy city in China’s Tibet

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck near one of Tibet’s holiest cities on Tuesday morning, the China Earthquake Networks Centre said, damaging buildings around Shigatse and sending people running to the streets in neighbouring Nepal and India.

The trembler at 9:05 a.m. (0105 GMT) had an epicentre depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), the report added, revising the magnitude from an earlier 6.9.

Crumbled shop fronts could be seen in a video showing the aftermath from the nearby town of Lhatse, with debris spilling out onto the road.

Reuters was able to confirm the location from nearby buildings, windows, road layout, and signage that match satellite and street view imagery. The date could not be verified independently.

New Delhi:

An earthquake of magnitude 7.1 hit Tibet near the Nepalese border today, the tremors of which were felt in several parts of India, including Bihar, Assam and West Bengal.

Nepal is nestled in a geologically active region, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, forming the Himalayas and making earthquakes a frequent occurrence.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake was recorded at 6:35 am. NCS data reveals that two more earthquakes hit the region shortly after the first one.

The second earthquake of magnitude 4.7 was recorded at 7:02 am at a depth of 10 km and the third earthquake of magnitude 4.9 at 7:07 am at a depth of 30 km.

The tremors were particularly felt in Bihar where people were seen outside their houses and apartments. There have been no reports of any damage to property because of the earthquake.

Two back-to-back earthquakes measuring 4.9 and 4.8 on the Richter scale occurred in the Kashmir Valley on Tuesday. However, no loss of life or damage to property has been so far reported from anywhere.

Meteorological Department Director, Mukhtar Ahmad said that the first earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale occurred at 6:45 a.m. with coordinates, latitude 34.17 degrees north and longitude 74.16 degrees east. The epicentre of the earthquake was in Baramulla district of J&K and its depth was 5 km inside the earth.

The second earthquake occurred at 6:52 a.m. and its magnitude was 4.8 on the Richter scale. Its latitude was 34.20 degrees north and longitude 74.31 degrees east.

The epicentre of the second earthquake was also in Baramulla district and it occurred at a depth of 10 km.

The earthquakes were felt throughout the Valley as people in most places ran out of their homes. Anxious callers kept the phone lines busy asking relatives and friends their welfare.

Provincial authorities have said that so far there have been no reports of loss of life or damage to property from anywhere in the Valley.

Kashmir Valley is seismologically situated in an earthquake-prone region.

On October 8, 2005, an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale killed over 80,000 people across the line of control in Kashmir.
