Chief Minister Rekha Gupta waving at the crowd in Dwarka, New Delhi, on Sunday.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday announced civic infrastructure projects worth nearly ₹100 crore in Dwarka and said that the Centre and the Delhi government are working in tandem for the development of the national capital after years of “neglect” under the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regime.

She said the Dwarka sub-city will benefit as new corridors are being developed under the ₹6,200-crore expansion project in Phase-V of the metro to improve connectivity.

‘Works accelerated’

Ms. Gupta said the metro expansion projects had stalled earlier because the Delhi government failed to release its share of funds on time.

“Our government has released ₹10,000 crore for metro expansion and accelerated development works,” she said.

The Chief Minister added that efforts to resolve issues related to unauthorised colonies had also gathered pace after the formation of the “double-engine government”.

Addressing a gathering in Dwarka, Ms. Gupta said the Delhi government is working towards realising the vision of ‘Viksit Dilli (developed Delhi)’.

Working on war footing

Blaming the previous AAP government for the “deteriorating civic conditions” in Delhi, Ms. Gupta said several areas in the Capital lacked basic facilities such as drinking water, sewer lines, roads, and drainage systems.

“The present government has worked on war footing within one year to resolve these issues. Pipelines are being laid where there were no water pipelines, sewer networks are being developed where there were no sewer lines, and roads and drains are being rapidly constructed where such infrastructure was missing,” she said.

The Chief Minister said the Centre and the Delhi government were jointly working to improve civic infrastructure and public services, which includes regularisation of unauthorised colonies, housing for slum dwellers, and improvement of hospitals and schools.

Ms. Gupta said the government’s focus was not limited to large-scale projects alone but also on ensuring the delivery of basic amenities to every colony and locality.

For the first time, substantial annual budget allocations have been made for development works in every Assembly constituency, she added.

Two-day event

Separately, while inaugurating a two-day ‘Mega Self Help Group Mela-2026’ in Rohini, the Chief Minister said the government has introduced collateral-free loans of up to ₹10 crore for women self-help groups and start-ups.

Noting that the Delhi government will act as a guarantor, she said the initiative is aimed at making women in the Capital self-reliant, entrepreneurial, and economically empowered.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu held a meeting with senior DDA officialsto discuss development strategies for the subcities of Dwarka, Rohini and Narela.

Lieutenant-Governor and Chairperson of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed officials to prepare a comprehensive, time-bound plan to develop Dwarka into a major hub for domestic and international investment, officials said on Monday.

Semiconductor plants

According to DDA officials, the plan will explore opportunities to establish data centres, semiconductor plants, and warehousing facilities in Dwarka while promoting non-polluting sectors such as IT and IT-enabled services, health care, global capability centres, and digital infrastructure.

In a meeting chaired last week, Mr. Sandhu had asked senior DDA officials to discuss development strategies for the sub-cities of Dwarka, Rohini, and Narela in the Capital.

“With improved connectivity through the Urban Extension Road, metro expansion, transit-oriented development policy and proximity to the airport, these areas are well positioned to emerge as decentralised economic hubs,” a DDA official said.

The official added that projects such as Yashobhoomi, the upcoming diplomatic enclave and large investment-ready land parcels strengthen the potential of these regions.

Employment generation

“Such transformation will create investment opportunities, generate employment, and support sustainable urban growth in Delhi,” the official said, adding that stakeholders would be consulted before the action plan is finalised.

New Delhi:

A team of five archaeologists from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), including women members, has commenced “groundbreaking underwater explorations” off the coast of Dwarka in Gujarat, the Ministry of Culture said on Tuesday.

“The current underwater investigations mark a significant step in ASI’s mission to safeguard India’s rich underwater cultural heritage,” it said in a statement.

This underwater exploration is part of the renewed Underwater Archaeology Wing (UAW) of the ASI, which has “recently been revived” to undertake offshore surveys and investigations in Dwarka and Bet Dwarka in Gujarat, the ministry said.

A team of five archaeologists from the ASI, led by Professor Alok Tripathi, Additional Director-General (Archaeology) has “commenced groundbreaking underwater explorations off the coast of Dwarka,” it added.

The team, which also includes H K Nayak, Director (Excavations and Explorations); Aparajita Sharma, Assistant Superintending Archaeologist; Poonam Vind, and Rajkumari Barbina, has selected an area near the Gomati Creek for initial investigations, the statement said.

“For the first time in ASI, this team comprises a significant number of women archaeologists and the most number of archaeologists actively participating in underwater investigations,” it said.

The UAW has been at the forefront of underwater archaeological research since the 1980s. Since 2001, the wing has been conducting explorations at sites such as Bangaram Island (Lakshadweep), Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu), Dwarka (Gujarat), Loktak Lake (Manipur), and Elephanta Island (Maharashtra), the ministry said.

Archaeologists of UAW have also collaborated with the Indian Navy and other government organisations for the study and protection of underwater cultural heritage, it said.

Earlier, the UAW had carried out offshore and onshore excavations at Dwarka from 2005 to 2007. “The coastal areas were examined during low tide where sculptures and stone anchors were discovered. Based on those explorations, underwater excavations were carried out,” the statement said.

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today dived into the Arabian Sea off the coast of Gujarat to perform an underwater puja at the ancient site of Dwarka. Dwarka, known for its connection with Lord Krishna, was once a thriving city that is now believed to be submerged under the sea centuries ago.

Scuba diving is conducted off the coast of Dwarka near Beyt Dwarka island, where people can see the underwater remains of ancient Dwarka that were excavated by archaeologists.

Today, visuals of PM Modi in scuba gear and descending into the azure waters to offer prayers at the site steeped in historical and spiritual significance went viral on social media.

PM Modi paid homage to the ancient city, making an offering of peacock feathers—a symbolic tribute to Lord Krishna.

Sharing his experience, PM Modi wrote on X, “To pray in the city of Dwarka, which is immersed in the waters, was a very divine experience. I felt connected to an ancient era of spiritual grandeur and timeless devotion. May Bhagwan Shri Krishna bless us all.”

Earlier today, the Prime Minister inaugurated ‘Sudarshan Setu’, the country’s longest cable-stayed bridge of 2.32 km, on the Arabian sea connecting Beyt Dwarka island to mainland Okha in Gujarat’s Devbhumi Dwarka district.

The bridge boasts a unique design, featuring a footpath adorned with verses from Srimad Bhagavad Gita and images of Lord Krishna on both sides.

The 2.32 km bridge, including 900 metres of central double span cable-stayed portion and a 2.45 km long approach road, has been constructed at a cost of Rs 979 crore, as per an official release.
