Australian cricket slapped a 10-year ban on Sri Lankan Test player Dulip Samaraweera on Friday for alleged “inappropriate behaviour” — to run concurrently with a 20-year suspension he is already serving. The 52-year-old, who played seven Tests and five ODIs in the 1990s, was appointed head coach of the Victoria state women’s team in May. But his tenure was short-lived after alleged inappropriate behaviour towards a woman player.

Cricket Australia’s Conduct Commission banned him in September from holding any position within Australian cricket for 20 years, but another claim has surfaced.

This one related to an alleged incident while Samaraweera was employed by Cricket Victoria, but during private coaching sessions outside this role.

“Cricket Australia Conduct Commission has made a determination in relation to a further allegation of inappropriate behaviour against Dulip Samaraweera,” it said.

“Samaraweera denied the allegations but chose not to participate in the investigation and subsequent Conduct Commission hearing.”

The commission, which gave no further details of the allegations, said the 10-year penalty would run concurrently with his 20-year ban.

Former Sri Lankan Test cricketer Dulip Samaraweera, who was working as Victoria’s women’s team coach, has been banned for 20 years by the country’s board after being found guilty of breaching its code of conduct with “utterly reprehensible” behaviour during his stint with the side.

Samaraweera, who played seven Tests and five ODIs for Sri Lanka and first joined Cricket Victoria as a batting coach in 2008, was banned following an investigation by Cricket Australia’s Integrity Department.

According to cricket.com.au, the 52-year-old will not be allowed to hold any position in the cricketing set-up Down Under for the next two decades.

Samaraweera was found to be in “serious breach” of clause 2.23 of the CA’s Code of Conduct, which concerns conduct “contrary to the spirit of cricket, is unbecoming of a representative or official, is or could be harmful to the interests of cricket, or does or could bring the game of cricket into disrepute”.

In a statement, Cricket Victoria CEO Nick Cummins backed the ban and lauded the victim for pursuing her case.

He did not give the specifics of the incident that led to this outcome but a ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ report, quoting sources, said the Sri Lankan was accused of “coercive relationship with a player”.

“It is our view that the conduct was utterly reprehensible and a betrayal of everything we stand for at Cricket Victoria,” Cummins said.

“The victim in this case has demonstrated incredible strength of character and courage in speaking up. She will continue to receive our ongoing support to allow her to achieve her goals on and off the field,” he added.

Samaraweera, who is yet to react to the verdict, was appointed interim head coach of the team in November last year before taking the position full-time in May this year. He resigned within two weeks of that elevation. He was also an assistant coach with Women’s Big Bash League side Melbourne Stars.

The Australian Cricketers’ Association supported CA’s verdict.

“These are extremely serious findings that may shock and upset many in the cricket community,” said chief executive Todd Greenberg.

Former Sri Lankan men’s cricketer Dulip Samaraweera has been banned from holding any positions in Australian cricket for 20 years following an integrity investigation, where he was found to have committed a serious breach of the Code of Conduct. Samaraweera, who played seven Tests and five ODIs for Sri Lanka from 1993 to 1995, was facing an investigation after being accused of alleged historic conduct relating to a female player. He initially joined Cricket Victoria as a specialist batting coach in 2008, before being named as interim head coach of the women’s side in November last year.

“The Conduct Commission found that Samaraweera engaged in inappropriate behaviour that breached section 2.23 of CA’s Code of Conduct. The allegations of inappropriate conduct took place while Samaraweera was employed by Cricket Victoria (CV).

“The CA Integrity Department investigates complaints brought to it under Integrity Codes and Policies which also apply to State & Territory Associations. The Conduct Commission hears matters referred to it by CA Integrity.

“CA and CV are committed to providing a safe environment for all players and employees and the welfare of those subjected to mistreatment is paramount. We strongly encourage the reporting of inappropriate behaviours, which can be made directly to the CA Integrity Unit or via the Core Integrity Hotline,” said Cricket Australia (CA) in a statement on Thursday.

Section 2.23 of the code refers to conduct that is either: (a) contrary to the Spirit of Cricket; (b) is unbecoming of a representative or official; (c) is or could be harmful to the interests of cricket; or (d) does or could bring the game of cricket into disrepute.

This year in May, Samaraweera, whose younger brother Thilan played 81 Tests and 53 ODIs for Sri Lanka men’s team, was appointed to the role on a full-time basis on a two-year deal, but quit the position in less than two weeks, and was replaced by Melbourne Renegades WBBL assistant coach Andrew Christie.

Samaraweera, 52, was in line to take up a coaching role with Australia A women’s team for their multi-format series against India A in August this year, but was stood down from the duties once the allegations of serious misconduct against him came to the light.
