U.S. President Donald Trump has said he could travel to India next year and noted that talks with India are “going good”.

“It’s great, going good. He [Prime Minister Narendra Modi] stopped… Largely he stopped buying oil from Russia,” Mr. Trump said at the Oval Office in response to a question on how talks with Mr. Modi and trade discussions with India are progressing.

“He’s a friend of mine, and we speak… He wants me to go there. We’ll figure that out. I’ll go. I had a great trip there with Prime Minister Modi, he’s a great man. And I’ll be going,” Mr. Trump said.

When asked if he is planning to go to India next year, Mr. Trump said, “It could be, yeah.” India will host leaders from Australia, Japan, and the United States for the Quad summit in New Delhi after the 2024 summit was held in Wilmington, Delaware.

However, the dates for the summit in India are yet to be announced.

In his remarks before the press, Mr. Trump reiterated his claim that he stopped the war between India and Pakistan in May using trade.

“Of the eight wars I ended, I would say five or six were ended because of tariffs. I’ll give you an example. If you take a look at India and Pakistan, they started to fight, they are two nuclear nations… They were shooting each other. Eight planes were shot down. It was seven. Now it is eight, because the one that was sort of shot down is now abandoned. Eight planes were shot down.”

“And I said, ‘Listen, if you guys are going to fight, I’m gonna put tariffs on you’. And they both went, you know, they were not happy about that. And within 24 hours, I settled the war. If I didn’t have tariffs, I wouldn’t have been able to settle that war,” Mr. Trump said.

The President also termed tariffs a “great national defence”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, during a joint briefing with President Donald Trump in the US, spoke about India’s vision of ‘Make India Great Again’ (MIGA) – a phrase inspired by Mr Trump’s signature slogan ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA). According to PM Modi, a joint vision of ‘MAGA’ and ‘MIGA’ becomes a mega partnership for prosperity.

“The people of America are well aware of President Trump’s motto ‘MAGA – Make America Great Again.’ The people of India too are focusing on heritage and development as they move forward at a fast pace and with a firm resolve towards the goal of Viksit Bharat 2047. In the language of America, it’s Make India Great Again – MIGA. When America and India work together, this MAGA plus MIGA becomes a ‘mega partnership for prosperity’ and it is this mega spirit that gives new scale and scope to our objectives,” the PM said.

The two leaders also announced that India and the US have set a USD 500 billion target for bilateral trade by 2030.

“Today, we have also set a target to increase our bilateral trade to more than double, reaching USD 500 billion by 2030. Our teams will work on finalising very soon a mutually beneficial trade agreement,” PM Modi said, adding that the two countries are moving forward in the direction of joint development, joint production, and transfer of technology.

“We will strengthen oil and gas trade to ensure India’s energy security. In the energy infrastructure, investment will increase. In the nuclear energy sector, we spoke about deepening our cooperation, in the direction of small modular reactors. America plays a key role in India’s defence preparedness. In the coming days, new technology and equipment will increase our capacity,” he said.

PM Modi also announced that Washington and New Delhi are pushing to conclude a “mutually beneficial trade agreement” in the coming days.

PM Modi, who is the fourth world leader to visit the US since Mr Trump’s return to the White House, met the US President and his close aide and billionaire Elon Musk on Thursday. Their meeting came hours after Mr Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on all countries, including India.
